Mile High Report A few more thoughts

I love the Fox hire, but then I also liked the MacDaniels hire, so I might not have any credibility.

Somewhere around 34% Elway, 33% Zanders and 33% Fox does sound a lot better then approximately 97% MacDaniels and 3% Zanders.

I think the longer the CBA takes to get settled, the higher our draft pick will be in 2012.

Please let me compare Elway and Tebow and the other QB's for just a minute. Elway's stats were not great, actually very average, but what he gave the Broncos, more then just leadership, was heart. With Elway, it was never over until it was over. That's what we have missed all these years, was the heart and that's what we get back with Tebow.

Here is how I see it:

Elway = Smart, Big arm, great leader and played with heart.
Griese = Smart, Played with heart, but no leadership skills.
Plummber = Good leader and played with heart, smarts?
Cutler = Big Arm, -0- leadership, no heart Smarts?
Orton = Smart, leadership? heart? Good guy!
Tebow = Smart, Great Leader and heart by the bucket loads.

Jake Plummber had heart, not a great QB, but he played with heart, and oh that's right, wasn't he was the last Bronco's QB to win a playoff game. I am not saying Tebow is the next Elway, but what he brings back is a lot of what we had with Elway. And it's going to be be a fun ride for the next few years.

Speaking of playing with heart, isn't Fox going to have to find a place for Mays?

Should we give Marquez Branson another look at TE?

And my last thought, I can't believe we've already had 10,435 mock drafts and it's only January.

Mile High Report Just a few thoughts

  • Is there a QB out there that can get rid of the ball faster then Orton? I hope Tebow is watching.
  • I remember being all excited about the upcoming 09 season and having Moreno and Hillis in the backfield. Whatever happened to that anyway?
  • George Blanda played until age 48, I'm beginning to think Dawkins can break his record. At that point he would have to go into the Hall of Fame as a Bronco.
  • We all know who the stars of this team are, but just for fun, I hope we have one game where we put so many points on the board that the 4th quarter is full of Tebow, Decker and Willis. And maybe get to see what Andre Brown is all about. Better yet, if Moreno is not back, let's see what Browns all about next week.
  • Wouldn't be great to have both DT and TD!
  • Speaking of DT, can we please get him just a little more involved in the offense.

Mile High Report Studs and Duds

It seems for those who do not read MHR, the popular thing to say about the Broncos is that MacDaniels does not know what he is doing and their main point of contention is the drafting of Alphonso Smith . So I thought I would take a look at the first 4 rounds of drafting since the beginning of the Dan Reeve's era.

The players that were drafted that had a stud career with the Broncos got 2 stars. Then there were the Busts and the others. Of course this is my opinion and you may feel differently.

Is it reasonable to think that the object of any player drafted in the first 4 rounds should become a starter at some point or another for the team that drafted him?

Sorry the lines are not straight, I don't have the patience.

Mile High Report QB What if's

  • What if McDaniels did not make that trade for Quinn before the draft. We get Tebow in the draft and now, here we are a month down the road. Knowing what he knows now about Tebow and the fact that he was able to get him in the draft, does McDaniels make that trade for Quinn today using next year's 5th rounder?
  • What if last year we traded Cutler to Cleveland and ended up with Quinn and Quinn has one year under his belt with McDaniels, does McDaniels still go after Tebow in this years draft? Do we know enough about Quinn playing under McDaniels to know how to answer this?
  • What if, when McDaniels came to the Broncos, Cutler had the same attitude as Tebow does today? The only other QB in camp could be Brandstater. If he has Cutler with Tebow's attitude does he still go after Tebow? Probably not, and then if that's the case do we still have Marshall and Scheffler? But then again, if Cutler has the same attitude as Tebow, do we even have McDaniels? Is Shanahan still the coach? (Let's assume that with Cutler's great attitude we were still able to get him at the # 11 pick).
  • What if I would have broken this up in to 3 different posts and 3 different polls?

Mile High Report So to Summarize this offense

We have possibly one of the best QB guru's in the league in McDaniels teaching a QB that has all the intangibles that you want in a QB that can't be taught, who will bust his bust to become the best QB EVER, who soaks up the play book like a sponge and does whatever it takes to correct problems which he then seems to do over night. And then at some point this fast mobile QB who can throw 60 yard passes will be throwing to not only Royal, but to Demaryius Thomas who is like Marshall only faster and without the headache. And Eric Decker who caught somewhere around 364 passes in College and ONLY DROPPED 3 PASSES (are you kidding me)!! All that and with a new interior OL to protect and actually make holes for Moreno and the others. WOW, this is going to be so much fun to watch!! Are we living the dream or WHAT!!

Mile High Report I know the plan

By the end of 2010, McD has turned Orton into a super star, they sign him and then trade him for a #2, 3 and 4 draft pick and we get those picks back. And this is only the start. From now on McD drafts one or two QB's each year and the Broncos turn into a QB factory. In 3 years Tebow is traded for 4 #1's. McD trades down and gets more QB's and draft picks. Before long the Broncos are so unbeatable the NFL forces Bowlen to fire McD who in turns starts a QB camp. Then the NFL starts requiring all QB's coming out of college to spend 2 years in the McD QB camp before entering the draft. The camp will employee 1,000's of people and starts pumping up the Denver economy. All's is well.

Mile High Report Please explain one thing to me.

First of all, I love change and I am a huge fan of McD. I will admit the jury will be out for another 2 years, but what fun are we going to have in the mean time. I was not happy giving up those 3 picks on Tebow, but it is what it is and for now we go forward and I hope Tebow becomes a superstar.

One of the knocks on Tebow is that he is not an accurate passer. But yet his completion percentage, YPA and passer rating was greater then Payton or Eli Manning or Matthew Stafford coming out of the SEC. And then this from the DP this morning. This may be common knowledge, I don't watch college football, but OMG, this is amazing.

In his final game with the Gators, he passed for 482 yards (three incompletions, no interceptions) and accounted for four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) in the Sugar Bowl.

What!!! He passed for 482 yards in one game and no interceptions and only 3 incompletions, are you kidding me. How can you do that and not be an accurate passer. I don't get it. Is there something here that I just don't understand? What does he have to do to become an accurate passer?

Mile High Report Before QB's or WR's

The Broncos need to fortify the OL before any QB has time to throw and the WR's can catch. Did you see what Peter King had to say about Pouncey.

4. I think you'd be surprised at the one name I've heard the most about in the past three or four days.

I don't mean the guys at the very top of the draft -- I'm talking more about, say, 10 to 25. One name: Maurkice Pouncey. (Full draft profile on Pouncey here.) So many teams look at him and say, "He's a plug-and-play player for the next 10 years.'' Meaning you can put him in the lineup for the next 10 years and not worry about it. Solid as a rock. There are, quite literally, six teams seriously considering him in the middle 15 picks of the first round.

The Broncos are near the top of the that middle 15 picks. If 6 teams are looking, he probably will not be around for long. Maybe Pouncey is not such a reach at #11.

Mile High Report Who Plays Orton

Just a couple of thoughts, and sorry if all this was mentioned before, I have been busy and behind on my MHR reading:

  • What happened with our schedule? Why don't we get to play the Saints? We get to play all the other top teams. Washington does not appear to be a challenge, maybe we should switch them out for the Saints. McDaniels has me pumped, I'm ready for all takers, the hell with those wimpy teams.
  • Did I understand that correctly? When Washington was considering Shanahan it was mentioned that he would bring Slowik along!! Really?? Why?? Does Slowik have something over on Shanahan? Is there really a team owner that would give Slowik a chance after last year?
  • Boydy2669 had a great post talking about how people refer to our team members, the young arrogant head coach, the noodle armed QB, the defense being old and slow. It reminds me of the movie about Seabiscuit. So if they have a movie about the 2009 Broncos, who plays McDaniels? The guy who played Rudy might fit. How about who plays Orton. And Please no offense to Orton I am big fan and think he is doing a GREAT job.

Mile High Report Day 12 of camp 2008, much like camp of 2009

If Torain ever gets back in the league, he better skip Day 12 of camp.

Here is the video from Day 12 of Camp 2008.

Torain Injured, out for 6 to 8 weeks.

Marshall received suspenion, lets hope that's not a bad omen.

WOW! Moss recovers fumble from? Cutler?, No that time, it was Selvin Young.

Pick6 running for touchdowns. We couldn't even stop the run in Training camp. The offense looked pretty good next to that defense.

Good play by Foxworth - hated to see him go, but I do like the secondary of 2009.

And A LOT of names we don't hear anymore.

Mile High Report A few observations

"When I ask questions, they answer them to the best of their knowledge," Brandstater said of Orton and Simms. "The best part is just sitting back and watching them practice and hearing the coaching points that they get. I can kind of take a mental rep every time they walk up to center." I like that coming from someone who is obviously very smart and good at retaining information.

Nothing against Shanahan, I wish him the best, but why is it that when he was losing a player for some reason, I felt like the whole team was doomed. But with McDaniels, I don’t seem to be concerned. Cutler, Marshall! Let them go, we’ll be fine. Give us some guys off the street, with the coaching we have now, we’ll be fine, (well maybe that’s a little extreme).

So help me understand, McDaniels brings in his system. The players are only asked to do what they are good at. They will not be put into situations they can’t handle. So do the players fit the system or does the system fit the players? Maybe a little of both, I guess!?

Is it just me or is some of the local media starting to come around. Have they started reading MHR?

I’m glad to hear Marshall is in good shape, I wish he could get his head in good shape!

I hate to pick on Shanahan again, but how can people who have listened to Shanahan for the last few year turn around and call McDaniels arrogant. Is it just me, I see McDaniels as confident, not arrogant. I thought Shanahan was in a league of his own when it came to arrogance. As much as I liked Shanahan, I have been turning off his interviews for a long time . I think McDaniels is very refreshing. How many coaches in the league can talk as much as McDaniels without saying one cliché after another. And I think he handles it very well when asked the same question over and over and over and over again.

We’re getting close, it’s going to be a fun season, Go Broncos.

Mile High Report This is really hard!

I just hate this! The next 4 weeks has to be the worse time of the year for Bronco fans, or any football fan. I guess I need to go find a good book.

  • I want to see this McDaniel's system.
  • I want to see Orton managing a drive down the field and putting it in for touchdown.
  • I want to see Moreno, Hillis, Royal AND MARSHALL catching passes and running through the opposing defenses.
  • I want to see the fire in the eyes of the defense that we have not seen for awhile.
  • I want to see those pick 6's.
  • I want to see the Broncos win more games then the Bears
  • I want to read more MSN by Broncobear, HT and all the others when we have something new to write about.
  • I want to see the Broncos playing hard, playing evey game to the end and kicking butt this year. If they do that I can live with any results.

*******

  • I wonder what BDawk is thinking. Didn't he make a comment about coming here because of Cutler and that the Broncos were just one step away? Is he just as excited now that he has seen McDaniels working the team? And how does he feel about the progress of the defense?
  • I wonder if Marshall does not come in until, what is that date, Aug. 12th? How long before he is running full speed with the offense? I do expect him to be in a Bronco uniform this season.
  • I wonder what the MSM are going to be saying about the Broncos half way through the season and at the end of the season. I can't wait to hear all the apologies.... well, maybe I shouldn't hold my beath on that one.
  • I wonder who is telling Wilcox that the Broncos are having a attitude problem? Is he just making this up? I have not heard that from anyone else or I have I seen it in the interviews.
  • I notice through the mini camps we don't hear much about the individual players like when Shanahan was in charge. Is that going to continue through training camp? Listening to the players it sure sounds like all team to me.
  • Remember the day in mini camp that the defense had 3 picks. I'm not sure how to feel about that? I guess I hope the defense keeps it up and the offense does not!

I keep telling myself " I can make it through the next few weeks, I can make it through the next few weeks, I can make it through the next few weeks, I can make it through the next few weeks, I can make it through the next few weeks,"

Training camp start when? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! Come on Broncobear, Feed me!!

Mile High Report Marshall?? What the H......

I'll make this very brief. I DON'T GET IT, how can he ask for a new contract??? Granted, he is a GREAT receiver and not paid what he has been worth for the last 2 years and I want him playing for the Broncos. But he is one step away from a long suspension and he's injured. Is there something he is not saying about his hip? Is he looking for a contract because he is afraid he can't be the same receiver any more? What about the hand? He said it was numb all last season, do we really know that it is better? He did drop a lot of passes. Was that because of Cutler throwing too hard? What team in their right mind would consider giving him a big contract right now? Don't you think Bowlen may have offered a large incentive contract for 1 or 2 years? Get out and play, show us your ok and then we'll talk. I saw a comment that we could trade him for 1st or 2nd rounder. Are you kidding me!! At the moment we'd be lucky to get a CFA.

Mile High Report Just one Player!!

I have been a Bronco Fan since I moved to Denver in 83, about the time Reeves was asked if he would like to trade for Elway. But I grew up close to Kansas City and still have friends back there. The Chiefs are my second team (I wish they were in the NFC!) and I try to catch up with them at times. I hate to be a copycat but they brought up a great idea for a post and thought it would be an interesting debate.

Let’s do this with a little twist. Let’s assume McDaniels has one wish and he can bring back one Bronco player from the last 40 years, who does he bring back?

• Do you bring back TD or stay with Moreno?
• Do you bring back Elway from his last two years?
• How about Rod Smith or Watson, they were great players but could you really replace BM or Royal?
• Is there any question that McDaniels would like to have Gradishar on his team?
• How about a little Tom Jackson to get you fired up!
• Does he have no choice but to bring back Al Wilson?

Who fits in the system? Who is it that you just have to have?

Mile High Report If Shanny would have:

I was depressed when we lost cutler, but the more I read MHR the better I felt. Then I was extremely depressed after the draft. But again, the more I read MHR the more excited I get. I can see now the McD system of drafting.

- You don't draft players in the first round that will not eventually be 3 down players. That includes pass rushers will may sit on the bench for a play or two. You save them for later rounds.

- You don't draft players in the first few rounds that will need to sit on the bench and learn for 1 or 2 years and hope they work out. You save those picks for the College Free agents and take your time developing them into good players, no pressure, no money. I see what McD means when he says you don't draft players to cut them later.

- You don't draft players in the first few rounds that can't come in contribute on some level starting game one.

- You don't draft a player unless you have personally interviewed and checked them out so you know the person and the player you will pay all that money to. You save those players for the college free agents. Remember the player Reeves drafted, 4th player taken over all and he was 6" shorter then Reeves was told. Did he even make it through trainging camp??

- You don't draft character problems, you save those picks for CFA's. If a character problem like Baker comes in and can only feed off positive and motivated players, who knows what can happen!!! And if they don't work out, your not stuck with them on the team as a cancer because of the contract.

- You don't draft on need or best available. You take the best of both methods and draft best available that fit the system. There is a method to the madness!

Do I understand this correctly, what am I missing??

I now I keep wondering, how much better could this team have been if Shanny would have drafted using the McDaniels system.

I look at the draft grades from the national writers and LOL!!!

I read Krieger, Paige, and Frei and know for sure with their attitude they would be lucky to make it as a CFA's on a McDaniels team. It's no wonder the readers of the DP are so pissed off. I would be to if I wasn't smarted enough to read MHR.

In November, due to injuries they had to put in a couple of high charactor, great attitude rookie backups in Woodyard and Larson. Look what happened to the defense in that stretch. OMG, what would happen if we had a whole team of players like that and playing on everydown. WOW!

I think it's too bad it could'nt be the McD system and Cutler, but I don't think it would have worked, no way no how. I see the Broncos as a much better team with the McD system and Orton over the Shanny system and Cutler. And as a bonus we get Ayers, Alfonso plus one more.

I can't wait to see the McDaniel's offense in high gear, eating up the clock and actually scoring TD's.

I look forward to the next season and the next and the next and get sooo excited over where I think this team is headed.

GO BRONCOS AND GO MCDANIELS!!!!!!
