This is what we're up against.
This foe defeats UCLA football every day of every year. This is our greatest challenge and it is one that has stood in our way seemingly forever. This obstacle is called "lack of ambition." This is the virus that still has hold over many in the UCLA fan base and in the Morgan Center.
This is a post I just made on a certain internet message board in response to some idiotic statement about how supposedly great Dorrell is for posting a 10-2 season last year. All of the frustration just poured out in response. I meant every word of it.
Quote - "We don't need to fire the same man that took us to the best record that we have had in God knows how long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!KD has a great recruiting class next year. The future is bright!"My response - Did you actually watch any of our games during the 10-2 run? It seems nice on paper, but in reality it was a fluke. Almost all of our wins were lucky fourth quarter comebacks. Drew Olson and Maurice Drew saved us last year. And our two losses were absolute blowouts. One of the those losses came to a really bad team in Arizona. That record was smoke and mirrors.
Alabama just fired their fourth year head coach. During his four years at Alabama, he has had almost the exact same record each year that Karl Dorrell has had at UCLA. He even went 10-2 last year. Despite that record from a year ago, Alabama decided to fire him this year for going 6-6 and losing to Alabama's rival, Auburn, for the fourth time. Alabama found out after four years that the head coach could not win consistently or beat his rival. This is what you do when your goal is to win national titles.
The future is not bright. The best KD can pull off is a fluke 10-2 season. It's obvious to anyone who has really paid attention to UCLA football that Dorrell will never win a national title and will never defeat sc. But winning national titles in football and beating sc are not your goals, are they?
The future is bright for you because you demand nothing but mediocrity. You don't care about competing for national titles. As long as we have the occasional fluke 10 win season, you're happy. You're used to losing and being irrelevant, so you demand nothing more.
The mediocrity of UCLA football is YOUR FAULT. It's you and fans like you that populate our fan base and accept this garbage. It's people like you who work in the Morgan Center. You have no fire. You have no ambition. This fan base and the athletic administration is more responsible for the downfall of UCLA football than sc is. We only play them once a year. You people are keeping this program down 365 days a year.
I keep reading about how sc "lucked" into finding Pete Carroll. Well, that's only partially true. They had to demand more from their football program to find Pete Carroll. They had to fire Hackett. They created their own luck by not settling for mediocrity. I hate them like every good Bruin should, but we need to learn from that.
We need to learn from what we did with Lavin. UCLA Men's Basketball is almost back to where it belongs and it's because we stopped settling for less. We "lucked" into finding Howland because we fired Lavin. We gave ourselves the opportunity to become fortunate, to get lucky. And we must do that in football if we want to become anything more than an also-ran in the sport. What we're doing now is not good enough.

The Quitter
Making mistakes is more acceptable than giving up. I'd rather have a stupid coach than a gutless one.
The thing that will stand out for me about yesterday's loss to Oregon was how Dorrell basically gave up towards the end of the game. No matter how much better the other team is, you should go down swinging. There is no honor in "accepting" a loss. Here are three examples of this loser mentality from yesterday's game.
1. Punting when you're down in the fourth quarter-
When you're down by a lot and there's not a lot of time left, you go for it on fourth down. We got bailed out on that play, but it was still a cowardly move. Do we not want to win anymore?
2. Not showing emotion when the referees decide to screw you on a key play in the game-
We stopped the Ducks on fourth down, but the refs placed the ball a couple yards ahead of where it should have been. The reaction from Dorrell? Blank stare. Duh, what do I do know? No emotion. No yelling. No hollering. Nothing. We got screwed on that play and our leader had nothing to say about it. I can't think of any other coach who would react like that.
3. Not using timeouts and not using a hurry up offense when it's called for-
If you're down in the fourth quarter and time is running out, don't let a bunch of time pass after each play. This is very simple clock management. Karl Dorrell played college football. He worked as a receiving coach in the pros. He's the head coach at UCLA. He knows more about this game than most people, yet he does not manage the play clock correctly.
It felt more like a lack of effort than a lack of intelligence yesterday. We couldn't win the game, so why even try to score points, right? Just let twenty seconds pass between plays. This is quitting and it's not acceptable.
If you're going to quit during the game, then how about just quitting the job period? I want a mean, passionate SOB running this football team. Instead we have a dull quitter with no killer instinct. Karl Dorrell the man seems to be a good guy. Karl Dorrell, the coach, to put it bluntly, lacks balls.

Pauley Pavillion Renovation
Here's the Bruin Hoop Scoop Blog.
He highlights an article from the Daily News about the planned renovation of Pauley Pavillion. It seems nice. I hope they can get started on this soon.

Fire Karl Dorrell!
Dorrell is worthless. A freaking joke. Pac-10 Coach of the Year? ROFLMAO. -N
This is a 9 win team? We're getting embarrassed on national tv again under Dorrell. And this time we're getting embarrassed by our hated rivals.
It's time to face reality. We were lucky to win 9 games. Most of those wins came against bad teams and many of them were comebacks. We are no better now than we were a year ago.
I give SC credit. Carroll has assembled one of the greatest college football teams in the history of the sport. But this thing isn't even close. Our team is getting embarrassed. We, as Bruins, are getting embarrassed.
It's time to end this. The Dorrell experiment has been a failure. What will it take for UCLA to make a change? How many times must we get embarrassed before Karl Dorrell and this coaching staff are shown the door? As alumni and students, we must DEMAND change. This is no longer acceptable. I'm sick of losing to USC and I'm sick of losing like this. If UCLA athletics can't make a change, then we should drop football.
Unfortunately, some will argue that with 9 wins, we should be satisfied. Some will say that KD has done enough to keep his job. No, that's not the case. In the most important game of the year, the UCLA Bruins have failed and they have failed miserably. We're not even competitive with the Trojans. Dan Guerrero, if you have any pride left in you as a Bruin, fire Karl Dorrell. Alumni, if you care about your school, demand the termination of Karl Dorrell. Write letters to the administration. Hold on to your money. Don't donate to UCLA athletics. The constant failure cannot continue.

An apology is in order
I'm sorry about what I posted the other day. My emotions got the best of me and I shouldn't have posted anything after a loss. The next morning, I felt really bad about the whole thing. UCLA Basketball lost to a very good Memphis team the other night, a team we were expected to lose to. The team isn't at full strength right now. I simply hate to see us lose to any team. That's not an excuse for what I posted though.
UCLA athletics is great. We have 97 NCAA team championships, with the greatest men's Basketball and Volleyball programs out there. We're also quite good in other sports, although we have faultered a bit this season.
Although I don't think we will beat the Trojans in football next Saturday, I still think we have a chance. We had an even worse team last year and we played them very close. A Bruin victory is not impossible.
I just wanted to apologize and tell you all how I really feel. I will not post anything here while angry again.
Go Bruins! Conquer the Trojans!

I'm through with UCLA Athletics
As I type this, it's halftime in our game against Memphis in basketball. We're getting killed. We have no offense. We have no defense. Every single supposedly great player we have is overrated. We're getting embarrassed on national television in OUR sport, under the coach who was supposed to lead us back to the promised land. UCLA Basketball is dead. If we play like this against SUC, we will lose to them in basketball. That's disgraceful.
UCLA football...no comment. SUC is going to destroy us on December 3rd. We all know it's coming.
Even in the pansy ass sports like Soccer and Water Polo, UCLA has become mediocre, losing games they shouldn't.
I'm going to be graduating this spring and I couldn't be happier to be getting away from this sinking ship. When I came to UCLA, I expected to be attending a school with a great athletic program. The Bruins are mediocre in everything and now even our academic rankings are going down. I've had it. I don't need to be associated with this shit. I'm done on BRO and I'm done posting here. You need to be a masochist to follow UCLA sports. I'm not strong enough.

Too early for a bath
From the diaries: Couldn't agree more with BR here. - Nestor
Two things really bothered me about yesterday's game. The first thing was our horrible defense in the first half. Division 3 teams can score on us. If the defense plays like that against SC, then we don't have a chance. At least the defense improved in the second half, allowing ASU to score only once.
This second thing bothered me even more. It's the Gatorade bath for Karl Dorrell. In case you didn't see it, the players gave Dorrell the traditional "dumping of the Gatorade on the head coach", something which is meant to congratulate the coach on an especially great victory.
This angered me to no end. Yes, being 9-1 is nice after two seasons of absolute mediocrity. We should be 10-0, but 9-1 is still very good considering where we've been. This was also a game we were favored to win. ASU may have an even worse defense than UCLA's and that's saying something. No congratulations are needed for beating the Sun Devils.
We still have two games left. The Gatorade bath was simply too early. This season is far from over. This is no time to celebrate.
If the Bruins beat the Trojans on December 3rd, then Dorrell will deserve three Gatorade baths. Why? They're probably going to crush us. That's why. If the Bruins can beat the Trojans this year in football, the victory should inspire a movie. It will be like when the US beat the Russians in Hockey. It will be a "miracle."
Yes, from what I've seen, their team is that much better. Although they have looked vulnerable against ASU and against Notre Dame, the Trojans are rolling right now. They just crushed both Bay Area teams, teams the Bruins struggled against. Beat the Trojans this year, Karl Dorrell, and you should be swimming in Gatorade.
Even if the Bruins lose to the Trojans, they can still win whatever bowl game they get into. Win that and then maybe you will deserve your Gatorade, Coach. You will be 10-2 and the season will be over. It was simply too early to celebrate this season after a win against ASU. You're not finished yet.
