Bruins Nation LA Times Article Sums it Up: All the Bruins Can Do is Ask 'What If?'

All the Bruins Can Do is Ask 'What If?'

What if the final score were 44-6, Utah, and after the game, on the field, Utes running back Darrell Mack said of the Bruins:

"That last touchdown drive they came out on the field and they were whining and crying. And we just kept driving the ball down the field. They lost their composure. They had to be thinking they were going to win the game going in. That's the wrong thing to think about us. . . . That's an overrated team."

Shoot, it all came to pass, run and tackle, sure as UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell walked off the field escorted by two police officers into the early sunset of a soured season.

It will be remembered by Bruins fans as the Wipeout at Wasatch.

Rice-Eccles Stadium can now boast of hosting the opening ceremony for the 2002 Winter Olympics and 2007 closing ceremony for UCLA.

The Bruins can recover from this to win games, maybe even the conference, but it can't really recover from this -- at least not this year.

Bruins Nation SI Writer Stewart Mandel Calls Out KD

From SI.com:

There is a lot of optimism concerning this year's UCLA team, and many pundits point to the team's 20 returning starters. However, if I remember correctly, there was a Purdue team a few years ago that was a popular preseason pick because it was returning a boatload of starters, but they ended up having a disappointing season. Can you please tell me that won't be the case for UCLA this year?
--Steve, Brea, Calif.

Stewart Mandel's Answer:

I can assure you of no such thing, as I have a hard time putting too much faith in any Karl Dorrell-coached team, but I can tell you that the reasons behind the Bruins' rosy outlook are slightly different from those of that 2005 Purdue team. As I recall, the Purdue team you're referring to did return a lot of starters (including all 11 on defense), but the single biggest reason everyone was so high on them that year was because they'd somehow had a schedule devoid of Ohio State and Michigan (Iowa now has the same luxury this year and next). Obviously, that didn't help, because Purdue wound up finishing 5-6 -- the only losing season in Joe Tiller's tenure -- primarily because a) QB Kyle Orton was not among those returning starters; and b) Those 11 defensive starters, it turned out, stunk.

UCLA, on the other hand, fielded an impressive defense last season that finished sixth nationally in sacks (40) and 35th in total defense. The Bruins did lose one stalwart in defensive end Justin Hickman, but everybody else is back, so it's reasonable to expect a similar performance. That said, UCLA did go 7-6 last year, its offense was inconsistent and that vaunted defense disappeared in the Emerald Bowl. Therefore, you've got to believe almost all of the Bruins' preseason hype is based on that USC upset last December. (Though strangely, that same game seems to be having no effect whatsoever on the Trojans' expectations.) If the Bruins play like they did against USC every week this year, then heck, book their trip to New Orleans, but Dorrell's track record suggests they'll probably lose at least one or two games they shouldn't. I'd consider a preseason ranking in the 20-25 range to be reasonable.

Emphasis Added.

Bruins Nation Karl Dorrell Named One of Five Worst Coaches in NCAA

Bumped. SI's Mandel finally states what so many of us have been saying out loud for last few years. My only quibble with this list. If not for some heroic efforts of 2 LIVE Drew, Doba would be 4-0 against Karl Dorrell. So Dorrell should be number 4 on this list. GO BRUINS. -N

Sports Illustrated's Stewart Mandel has an article on the top ten coaches and five worst coaches in the NCAA:

  1. Al Groh, Virginia: Matt Schaub. D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Heath Miller. Ahmad Brooks. Groh has produced his share of talent in Charlottesville. So what does he have to show for it? A 25-23 ACC record and a whole bunch of Christmas dinners in Charlotte and Boise.
  2. Dennis Franchione, Texas A&M: Having now had four years to gauge Coach Fran's tenure in College Station, I think we can safely describe it in one word: disappointing (15-17 Big 12 record). A program like A&M's should never be this mediocre for this long.
  3. Tommy Bowden, Clemson: How does a team with James Davis, C.J. Spiller and Gaines Adams manage to lose four of its last five? How does a program with Clemson's resources fail to crack 8-4? And how has Bowden managed to survive half a decade on the hot seat?
  4. Bill Doba, Washington State: With each passing year, it becomes painfully apparent that Doba -- a super-nice guy and former legendary high school coach -- is in way over his head. After a successful 10-3 debut in 2003, he's gone 8-17 in the Pac-10 since.
  5. Karl Dorrell, UCLA: Last year's USC upset was the first sign Dorrell's Bruins were finally turning the corner -- and they promptly followed it up with that Emerald Bowl debacle. On paper, UCLA looks like a BCS contender this year, but Dorrell's track record doesn't exactly inspire much confidence.

Don't really like the Pistons, but really happy for Afflalo.

Glad he's going to get a 1st round contract.  Seriously, all the recruits in the nation should take a look at what Coach Howland's done for Farmar and Afflalo.  NBA teams clearly respect the Team First system at UCLA.

Bruins Nation KD Resorting to Theatrics?

If you missed this in the DB, I don't blame ya, it was BURIED in an article about walk-on qb's.

"HOLLYWOOD INJURY: During a 7-on-7 drill on Thursday, defensive tackle Kevin Brown went down with what looked to be an ankle injury but was actually just a nice acting job.

"That's part of the drill," coach Karl Dorrell said. "That's part of our strategy defensively - find ways to stop the clock. He must have done a good job."

Ok, so we're resorting to play acting to stop time? How about saving some timeouts?!  Goddamn I hate it when players fake injuries, in soccer, hockey, baseball, basketball, football, etc.

Bruins Nation Arkansas BBall Coach Heath Fired

Arkansas BBall Coach Heath Fired.

The guy had an 82-71 record in 5 years there.  His bball team made the tournament the last 2 years, but failed to advance.  His team even improved the win total each of the last three seasons.

There was speculation he would be canned if his team didn't make the NCAA tournament (they did, after winning 5 straight). However, he was still axed.

Remind you of a certain other ball coach who has a winning record, but doesn't really win post-season games at a certain other sport?

Bruins Nation What it Means to Be Part of the Bruin Family

From the diaries. Another wonderful post. But I will be honest. Right now I am withholding all my contributions towards the university until it gets a new football coach. But that's just me. Ed's post is right on the money. GO BRUINS. - N

I noticed on another Internet site, that people thought the "Bruin Family" automatically meant hiring unqualified people.  I was appalled at the ignorance in the post.  So, I've decided to clear the air as to what it means to have a Bruin Family.

The Bruin Family is about...

Helping the Person Get a Foot in the Door

Like if you have to hire person A and person B and person B has a slightly better resume, but person A is a UCLA grad, you go w/ the UCLA grad.  If person A doesn't work out, you let him go, but you let the UCLA grad get first crack at the job.  I mean w/ GPA differences b/w schools, how can you be sure person B is more qualified than person A?  If that's the case, why not assume person A is ok?

What about for internships? Generally internships are revenue losing propositions anyways for companies, why not give the UCLA student a shot? Or just make it a general policy to hire 1 UCLA intern every summer.  Or heck, if the student is willing to volunteer, just let him volunteer (even if there is no specific need for it).  It'll help the students resume and who knows, you might find out that the person provided a real invaluable service!

Mentoring

So you're in the biz for a while...heck even if you're in the biz for only a year or two, it's about talking to students or recent grads and sharing your wisdom.  Let them know what the job is like and what they need to do to get the job or succeed in the job.  Let them know what mistakes to avoid.  Offer to answer any questions they have! What's more, it's about being pro-active about it.  It's not waiting for the student to come to you, but to make the first offer to the student (imagine how you would have felt as a student if some established person just offered to answer any questions you had?  Pretty darn good eh?)  It can be as simple as just going to Alumni-Student events (once a year and handing out a few biz cards and then just exchanging e-mails).

Spreading the Word

Know about a job opening? Why not let Bruins know about it first?  After all, most of the job openings are filled before they're published.  Let Bruins have first crack at getting that job filled.

Helping Hand

Know someone that just lost a job? It's about seeing if you know any openings that fit what the person is looking for or may provide a good stop gap.  How hard is it to let the person know about a job opening that's there? I'm sure the person would appreciate it!

Patronizing Bruin Businesses

So you want to buy a car.  What if there was a Bruin owned dealership? Why not go there? I mean if the dealership is w/in $100 or so of another dealership, why not go with the Bruin owned dealership?  What about going to Bruin owned restaurants? I mean for a fun night out on the town, try to hit up Bruin owned establishments (and let them know you're a Bruin).  I'm sure the owner would appreciate it!

Giving Back to the UCLA

It's about donating back to the school.  You might not have a lot, but students tend to have a lot less.  Donate $10 if that's all you can afford.  Every bit helps.  Also keep in mind, the value of your diploma is tied to the performance of the students.  The better students we can attract (through financial aid/scholarships), the better your diploma looks.  People don't know how good UCLA was ranked in the past, it only remembers how good it is ranked now.  The better it is ranked now, the better your diploma is valued/viewed.

These are all simple things you can do that don't require much of an effort to cultivate and maintain a Bruin Family.  Keep in mind, what goes around, comes around.

GO BRUINS!!!

Bruins Nation Why Some Bad or Underperforming Coaches Stick Around: A Quick Comparison to Stocks

From the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N

Why Some Bad or Underperforming Coaches Stick Around: A Quick Comparison to Stocks

A Coach is hired and after a fair amount of time, the Coach clearly hasn't met expectations.  Yet, even if the Coach is underachieving, it seems that a University may be hesitant to let go of patently bad or underperforming Coaches.  (For the sake of argument, the assumption is that the University includes not only the Athletic Director, but also the Alumni because the Alumni clearly has some input with the Athletic Director)

Why is this so?

While this isn't a perfect comparison, a quick analogy of Coaches to Stocks could provide an answer.

According to numerous articles, investors traditionally hold onto losing stocks for too long.  This is similar to refusing to fire a Coach despite practical evidence that the Coach isn't achieving its goals.

So why do investors hold onto losing stocks and why do Universities sometimes hold onto losing or underperforming coaches?

Economists have suggested a few answers for why Investors hold onto losing stocks and this can be compared to the situation with coaches:

Background on Stocks

In 2001 Dalbar, a financial-services research firm, released a study entitled Quantitative Analysis of Investor Behavior, which concluded that average investors fail to achieve market-index returns. It found that in the 17-year period to Dec 2000, the S&P 500 returned an average of 16.29% per year, while the typical equity investor achieved only 5.32% for the same period - a startling 9% difference! It also found that during the same period, the average fixed-income investor earned only a 6.08% return per year, while the long-term Government Bond Index reaped 11.83%.

Why does this happen? There are a myriad of possible explanations.

Regret Theory Fear-of-regret, or simply regret, theory deals with the emotional reaction people experience after realizing they've made an error in judgment. Faced with the prospect of selling a stock, investors become emotionally affected by the price at which they purchased the stock. So, they avoid selling it as a way to avoid the regret of having made a bad investment, as well as the embarrassment of reporting a loss. We all hate to be wrong, don't we?

What investors should really ask themselves when contemplating selling a stock is, "What are the consequences of repeating the same purchase if this security were already liquidated and would I invest in it again?" If the answer is "no", it's time to sell; otherwise, the result is regret of buying a losing stock and the regret of not selling when it became clear that a poor investment decision was made - and a vicious cycle ensues where avoiding regret leads to more regret.

Like investors holding onto bad stocks, the University may be afraid of saying it made a mistake.  After all, when a new Coach is hired, it is commonplace for the University to give the Coach a hero's welcome.  It makes connections with the Coach and want to believe that the choice it made was the correct one.  This is especially the case where the Coach is friendly with the University.  Thus, after years of underperformance, the University may want to keep the Coach around just a bit longer because it is afraid of regret.

Mental Accounting

Humans have a tendency to place particular events into mental compartments, and the difference between these compartments sometimes impacts our behavior more than the events themselves.

Say, for example, you aim to catch a show at the local theater, and tickets are $20 each. When you get there you realize you've lost a $20 bill. Do you buy a $20 ticket for the show anyway? Behavior finance has found that roughly 88% of people in this situation would do so. Now, let's say you paid for the $20 ticket in advance. When you arrive at the door, you realize your ticket is at home. Would you pay $20 to purchase another? Only 40% of respondents would buy another. Notice, however, that in both scenarios you're out $40: different scenarios, same amount of money, different mental compartments. Pretty silly, huh?

An investing example of mental accounting is best illustrated by the hesitation to sell an investment that once had monstrous gains and now has a modest gain. During an economic boom and bull market, people get accustomed to healthy, albeit paper, gains. When the market correction deflates investor's net worth, they're more hesitant to sell at the smaller profit margin. They create mental compartments for the gains they once had, causing them to wait for the return of that gainful period.

When the Coach has a few spectacular wins, it gives the University hope that the Coach will indeed fulfill the goal that the Coach was hired to accomplish (and yield returns that was expected from an investment).  Thus, a Coach only needs a few spectacular wins to give the impression that it indeed has the potential to create a successful program.  After bad losses, the University will point to the spectacular wins in hopes that those spectacular wins will become commonplace, even if they are few and far between.  Thus, the University deludes itself into believing that the next big Games are just around the corner (even if history has proven otherwise).    That is also why numerous coaches save their jobs for so many years after just one or two "good seasons."

Prospect/Loss Aversion Theory

It doesn't take a neurosurgeon to know that people prefer a sure investment return to an uncertain one - we want to get paid for taking on any extra risk. That's pretty reasonable.

Here's the strange part. Prospect theory suggests people express a different degree of emotion towards gains than towards losses. Individuals are more stressed by prospective losses than they are happy from equal gains. An investment advisor won't necessarily get flooded with calls from her client when she's reported, say, a $500,000 gain in the client's portfolio. But, you can bet that phone will ring when it posts a $500,000 loss! A loss always appears larger than a gain of equal size - when it goes deep into our pockets, the value of money changes.

Prospect theory also explains why investors hold onto losing stocks: people often take more risks to avoid losses than to realize gains. For this reason, investors willingly remain in a risky stock position, hoping the price will bounce back. Gamblers on a losing streak will behave in a similar fashion, doubling up bets in a bid to recoup what's already been lost.
So, despite our rational desire to get a return for the risks we take, we tend to value something we own higher than the price we'd normally be prepared to pay for it.

The loss-aversion theory points to another reason why investors might choose to hold their losers and sell their winners: they may believe that today's losers may soon outperform today's winners. Investors often make the mistake of chasing market action by investing in stocks or funds which garner the most attention. Research shows that money flows into high-performance mutual funds more rapidly than money flows out from funds that are underperforming.

Under the Prospect Theory, the University clearly has a losing Coach, but the Coach is also under contract with the University.  To cut the Coach loose, would mean losing the Coach's contract.  It would clearly be a financially losing proposition for the University.  However, if they keep the Coach, there is a chance that the Coach might justify his salary.  Thus, the University keeps the Coach with the prospect of the Coach justifying his salary.

Anchoring

In the absence of better or new information, investors often assume that the market price is the correct price. People tend to place too much credence in recent market views, opinions and events, and mistakenly extrapolate recent trends that differ from historical, long-term averages and probabilities.

In bull markets, investment decisions are often influenced by price anchors, prices deemed significant because of their closeness to recent prices. This makes the more distant returns of the past irrelevant in investors' decisions.

Take for example the S&P 500, whose three-year performance to end-1999 was an aberration from its historical performance. Yet up until March 2000, people felt the only direction the index could go was up, and they kept piling more money in it. Investors anchored themselves to the recent performance without taking into account true historical returns.

Here are the statistics to support the importance of considering long-term past performance. The compound historical return for the S&P 500 from 1926 to 1999 is 11.35%. The returns for 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 were 37.43, 23.07, 33.37, 28.58 and 21.03% respectively. For the three-year period between 2000 and 2003, the S&P 500 had an annualized return of -14.55%, exhibiting a reversion to the mean.

So the Coach has a few good wins, and even had a spectacular game recently or a mini win streak.  The University will hold onto the Coach in hopes that the Coach will perform admirably given the latest spectacular game or recent mini win streak despite past data suggesting that the spectacular win and mini win streak was an aberration.  The University, however, has failed to take into consideration the past performance of the Coach.

Summary:

Well there you have it, why Universities hold onto underperforming Coaches as analogized into stocks.  Yes, this isn't very in-depth and is kind of off-the-fly, but just a random thought I had.

Bruins Nation New Game: Name the Coach That Got Fired! (AKA Does He Remind You of Anyone Else?)

Who Am I?

I won the last 3 games in the season to get into a mediocore bowl game.  In the bowl game, I played a good team and had the lead, but choked it away.

I was subsequently fired less than a week after the bowl game.

My Contract

I signed a 4 year extension less than a year ago.

My Record as Head Coach

I had one 10 win season as the head coach (10-3).  The year before the 10 win season, I was 8-5.  The year after the 10 win season, I was 7-5. Overall, I've got a 53% winning percentage at my school.

My Bowl Record

3-4 (All mediocore bowl games)

My Record Against Rivals

Rival 1: 2-8
Rival 2: 4-6
Rival 3: 1-7
Rival 4: 4-4

What the Polls Show

84% of my Fans Support Firing Me based on a Website Poll

Some of my favorite quotes:

"This is the kind of game that puts a smile on your face. When you're outcoached and outplayed and still win."

"What I really like to say is, fine, if you don't like me that's one thing. But do you love the [Mascot for School]? Are you really a [Mascot for School] fan? Now ask yourself that question...There's a cumulative effect. When you act that way, don't you realize there's prospective student-athletes there that are looking at the school? Is that what they want to get involved in? Is that the kind of support they want?"

"We're 5-3, ... Right now, it doesn't feel, to anybody associated with our organization, like we're 5-3. Probably because of how we self-destructed against [Intra-Conference Opponent] and maybe what could have been today."

"I'm trying to instill confidence in these kids . . . It's like playing golf and your partner says, 'Don't hit it right. Don't hit it left. Don't over-swing. Don't under-swing.' Hey, just hit the ball."

What Alumni and Fans Say About Me

"[He] first took over as the coach of the [School Mascot] when they were the joke of the [School Conference]. I think most people would agree that he did a good job of bringing this program to the middle of the pack. However, once the program became mediocre, we all soon found out that we had hit a peak and would soon be in a downward spiral."

"Ever since that season [School Mascot] fans have come to expect disappointments, 4th quarter collapses, questionable coaching, top [School State] recruits leaving for other programs, and an alarming sense of satisfaction from the University in a program that has been mediocre at its best. Every year the [School Mascot] achieve bowl eligibility by beating up on smaller schools in the non-conference schedule and going .500 or less in the [School Conference]. It has come to a point where a change needs to be made if [School Mascot] fans ever want to have a chance at celebrating greatness from its Football Program. Think about it, if you are a blue chip high school star in [School State] and have a choice between consistent winners like [Intra-conference Rivals], or a program that could only muster a 4th place finish with a team that had actual NFL talent on the roster, who are you going to pick? A coaching change needs to be made to get rid of the stigma that is attached to this current [School Mascot] team. The time is now, lets get a new coach and a fresh start before we kickoff at the new stadium"

So Who Am I?

RECAP OF LAST YEAR'S WOODEN CLASSIC

Jordan Farmar had 24 points to lead No. 16 UCLA to a 67-56 victory over No. 17 Nevada in the second game of the John R. Wooden Classic at the Arrowhead Pond. Farmer's 10-13 from the field (including 3-3 from three-point territory) keyed a hot shooting night for the Bruins, who hit 52 percent of their attempts. They also held Nevada to 37 percent shooting for the game.

"It was an outstanding win for our team because we beat a really good team," said UCLA head coach Ben Howland. "Any team that has 14 straight wins on the road, dating back to last year, is just outstanding. They really have a chance to advance far in the NCAA Tournament, so it's really a quality win."

Said Farmar, "Coach called a couple of plays for me and I just knocked the shots down. I was just looking to be aggressive and I had a lot of opportunities."

Arron Afflalo chipped in with 18 points while also making an impressive defensive effort in his 37 minutes on the floor.

Nevada's Nick Fazekas tied Farmer for game high with 24 points, while also pulling down seven rebounds. "UCLA is the best team we've played so far this year," Fazekas said. "It might be the best team we see all year."

The loss was the first of the season for Nevada (6-1), while UCLA improved to 7-1.

"UCLA outplayed us in a lot of ways," said Nevada head coach Mark Fox. "Certainly we're disappointed with the loss. UCLA has an excellent basketball team and they played very well. They deserve credit for the victory."
