North Carolina may have more first place votes (14) but apparently that wasn't enough to outright beat us as we gained some ground on them yet again in the coaches poll.

ESPN/USA Today Poll
1. North Carolina (14) 2-0 744
1. UCLA (10) 3-0 744
3. Memphis (6) 4-0 718
4. Kansas (1) 3-0 680
5. Georgetown 2-0 636
6. Louisville 2-0 612
7. Tennessee 3-0 603
8. Indiana 2-0 520
9. Washington State 3-0 517

Duke 2-0 422

Oregon 4-0 417

Also, plenty of PAC-10 teams getting some votes.

Others Receiving Votes
Stanford 33
Washington 20
USC 9
California 3

So, it looks like tonight we will be watching #1 UCLA take on Maryland, at least according to ESPN.

What Could Have Been...

So we all know, Karl Dorrell sucks as a coach. that's a given. But let's assume we had a decent coach this season, and hadn't lost to Utah and Notre Dame. Where would we be now?

This may just be salt in the wound, but the food for thought is just below...

We would probably be ranked 2nd tomorrow. Crazy, but true.

In the last poll before the Utah loss we were 11th, right behind Ohio State. Boston College (2nd tomorrow, most likely) was ranked 19th and 21st.

Depending no what happens in the Washington/Arizona St. game we'd be either sole owner of 1st in the PAC-10 or half a game behind ASU.

This season has been perfect for us, ignoring our play. The right teams have lost at the right times, and if we had a halfway decent coach we'd be in a position to possibly play for the National Championship. There is no one in the PAC-10 that doesn't look beatable. Even USC has had three close games against inferior opponents, two of which we beat on the road.

Now sure, technically we still have a chance to win he PAC-10. Maybe a few more starting quarterbacks can get hurt. But its most likely not going to happen with Dorrell coaching.

Just thought I'd throw this out there. Where we should be right now. 2nd.

Keefe to have Surgery on Shoulder

According to Yahoo, Keefe injured his shoulder (torn cartilidge) during the summer. The injury was discovered on Tuesday and he will have surgery on Friday here at UCLA. They say recovery shoyuld take around 4 months.

Yahoo: UCLA forward James Keefe to have left shoulder surgery

"This is disappointing because I've been working hard this spring and summer in workouts getting my body stronger," he said. "Hopefully I'll be able to recover quickly and be back at full strength by the time Pac-10 play starts."

I just want to say good luck to Keefe on the surgery and hurry back. He seemed to be improving both his game and his physique over the summer. Sucks to see this happen to a kid with such potential. Hopefully he makes it back for the PAC-10 season and doesn't fall behind and lose his spot.

So what do you guys think this means? Is this a huge loss, a minor loss, should he red shirt and come back next year or hop in midseason and maybe be a bit fresher at the end of the season? Maybe we can get our injuries out of the way before the season starts and be healthy as it goes on. (knocks on wood). Doubtful though.
