Tony Phillips Signs With the Yuma Scorpions at Age 52

Better to hold a baseball bat than a crack pipe. Even at 52 years old. What's your excuse?

Scientifically Revealing an East Coast Bias?

Fangraphs recently did a crude experiment in an attempt to discover the biggest rivalries in baseball. What was revealed instead was a big east-coast bias...which they acknowledge and wrote about. Of course, the experiment also revealed that Mariners-Rangers is the biggest rivalry in the AL West....huh?

The Sky is Still Blue and Rob Neyer is Still a Moron

Neyer ranks the best rookie hitters and puts Trumbo 4th and Danny Espinosa 1st despite Trumbo having almost the same stats but with a better slugging percentage, OPS, OBP and BA. Not to mention this flub of grammar to describe Mark: "He's sort of flubbed it." = He is sort of flubbed it. Embarrassing on all accounts, really.

Angels Sign Mike Piazza

He's pitching now but has chosen to still wear no. 31. Best of luck Mike.

Peter Gammons Strokes Jered Weaver's Ego

...and actually alludes to the East-Coast Bias as a possibility for why he's not more widely considered one of MLB's top ace. Maybe when he's a Yankee in 2013, people will take notice (ouch.)

The reality of baseball today goes something like this: seven financial monsters – the New York teams, the Chicago teams, Boston, Philadelphia and the Angels – control much of the game’s power structure with their financial might. Other teams will come in and out – Houston and Seattle dropped themselves and Detroit is likely to join soon, while the Los Angeles Dodgers eventually will return under new ownership – and the rest fall into two categories: the got-a-chances (Minnesota, St. Louis, San Francisco, Atlanta) and the say-a-prayers (Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Arizona and the patron saint, Tampa Bay).

The Brains of Your Favrorite Team's Hitting Coach

Quote:Bert Blyleven about the Angels’ current hitting coach: "I remember one incident in particular at spring training in Orlando in 1986. It was St. Patrick’s Day and Mickey went into the maintenance room next to the dugout and found some green paint that was being used on the outfield walls. "He decided to cover himself in that paint. He painted his face green, his arms green, everything that showed under his uniform was green. "So he comes out all green, and he didn’t realize that the paint was enamel. It was a hot March day and everyone was laughing. Well the game started, and Mickey was sitting next to me on the bench, and all of a sudden he told me ‘Bert, I’m having trouble breathing.’ "His pores had closed and the paint was going into his system."

"Who would you rather have owning your team right now: a baseball-obsessive, mustachioed Vietnam vet who has vowed to take over the city, or a Boston real estate developer with less money than everybody thought, hanging on to his half of his estate for dear life? Someday, you might have to ask someone at an LA sports bar to turn on the Dodgers game."
