No. 13 Auburn will meet No. 19 Vanderbilt at 5 p.m. today in Vanderbilt Stadium as one of the most mistake-prone teams in the Southeastern Conference.
Auburn's 35 penalties are second only to Georgia. Auburn's 11 turnovers are among the highest in the league. Those mistakes have clouded the effectiveness of Auburn's new spread offense so much that it has been difficult to see what the offense can really do. One thing is for sure, however. Tuberville is still intrigued by it and that's why he repeatedly said this week he's sticking with Tony Franklin's system.
"This thing is going to be a broad-range offense once we get it in, but we're still in the implementing mode," Tuberville said. "Tony is trying to figure out these defenses. I think he's done a good job of learning and changing. If we were doing the same thing every week it would be different."
Auburn has made a few changes, like lining up a traditional two-back set near the goal line against LSU, and again on occasion against Tennessee, after failing to do so at Mississippi State. The Tigers also had three direct snaps to tailback Mario Fannin last week. But other changes will likely be subtle and not substantial. "The thing we don't want to do right now is putting too much in these kids'heads, especially going into a road game."
If anything, maybe Auburn should take a page from Vanderbilt's playbook on not making mistakes. The Commodores are averaging the fewest penalties in the league and are first in the nation in turnover margin.
