Kiper Warns Insiders: Watch Out For Greene

Mel Kiper, draft analyst, hair gel enthusiast, and all around God, (I think he needs his own 24-hour a day channel along with Tim Kurkjian, Barry Melrose - he'll be back, and Peter Gammons, but that's a whole other fanpost) is advising fans and scouts to "Keep an eye on Shonn Greene." This has been lingering on ESPN.com for the past week or so, but I thought it warranted mention here. If you're an ESPN.com Insider, you can click this link. Or because I know how lazy you all are, I've <strike>plagarized</strike> block-quoted the Greene portion of the column after the jump.

And down the hair gel slope we go...

One of the breakout stars, not only in the Big Ten, but in all of college football this season has been Iowa's junior RB Shonn Greene.

The aggressive, hard-nosed 5-10½, 230-pounder has been putting on quite a show every week, producing off the charts results and proving to be a model of consistency for the 5-3 Hawkeyes.

Greene has averaged over 5.0 yards per carry in each of the last 7 games, has carried the ball 20+ times the last 6 games, and back on October 4th, out-produced Michigan State's highly regarded senior Javon Ringer by 66 yards. In that game at East Lansing, Greene finished with 157 yards on 30 carries, averaging 5.2 yards per rush.

On Saturday against Wisconsin at Iowa City, he thrilled the crowd at Kinnick Stadium time and time again, busting loose for TD scampers that covered 12, 34, 52, and 34 yards. For the day, he rushed for a career-high 217 yards on 25 carries, averaging 8.7 yards per tote.

Greene, who sat out last year (attended Kirkwood Community College) in order to get his academic standing in order, really impresses me with his decisive style and ability to get those critical extra yards after initial contact.

Over the final month of the season, the game to circle will take place on Nov. 8 when the Hawkeyes play host to Joe Paterno's talent-laden Nittany Lions of Penn State at Kinnick Stadium.

It will be interesting to see how Greene fares in that contest, but rest assured folks, he's already done more than enough to guarantee a meteoric rise up the NFL draft board. And remember, he's a fourth-year junior with the option of remaining at Iowa for another campaign or entering the 2009 NFL Draft coming up in late April.

Reaction to The Realests

In case you missed it The Realests put out the Iowa portion of their Big Ten Season Preview. Now, I love me some Realests, but I've got to say, I'm a little upset with their assessment of the Hawkeyes. We'll start at the top of the page and work our way down.

For starters they have Iowa to finish 9th in the Big Ten. Show a little love for the Hawks, will ya. A former Hawkeye is the Realests' posterboy, that's gotta be worth at least an eighth place finish. While we're on the subject, has Tyree Ricardo Davis ever looked better than this? He's got that killer 'fro and his MSSprayPaint aura is just about as awesome as it gets.

Then there's the "Bad News" section that starts like this:

The Iowa City prison needs to open an H-block for all the criminals on this team.

Don't most of the football players live in Hillcrest already? Um... let's just move on.

No love for CBI? If Tyree Ricardo is your posterboy, how can you not love 'Nique Douglas? Just think about all that booty on the table. How did all of that money get there, you ask? He shaved. Douglas doesn't have hair, he grows straight cash. The man clearly has mutton chops that are made of bills.

All this and no love from the Realests? For shame sirs. We now officially have beef.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you are going to Evanston for the game this weekend, I cannot stress enough how awesome Mustard's Last Stand is. Mustard's is located across the West parking lot from Ryan Field. It is tiny, but you will see the yellow "Vienna Beef" sign sticking out on Central Street. You can order Dogs and other quick items outside, inside it will be packed, however inside is an experience in itself. If you are brave enough to head inside be advised that you order as far away from the door as is possible you may be standing by the door, but you'll have to wait 'til you get to the other end to order, then you will follow the counter back towards the door. (Note: Full ordering instructions to follow in a later diary post.)

Buddy Light recommends: "Dog and Fry", "Double Cheese", "Beef (be sure to get giardinara on it)and Fry", "Maxwell Polish and Fry"

Buddy Light recommends avoiding: Any chicken sandwich (they're tasty, but you will not want to wait as long as it will take to make it), steak sandwich (see previous reasoning)

Warning: Mustard's is delicious, but very messy.

The gentleman interviewed in this YouTube video is Keith. He is a good friend and my lifelong hot dog vendor of choice. He loves Hawkeye fans, he welcomes Iowa gear, but be advised if you wish to donate shirts, he is at least a XXXL.

This is my first diary post, I posted this here because I love the Hawkeyes and Mustard's is about the only thing that I love as much. I hope some of you take the time to enjoy one of my favorite establishments in the entire world, nothing beats Mustard's.

Oh yeah, and there is a piece of Hawkeye memorabilia on the wall inside Mustard's, see if you can find it.

Hope this and tasty food finds you all well.

- Buddy Light
