The Ralphie Report TE Vincent Hobbs Commits to the Buffs

Vincent Hobbs

Mesquite, TX

Ht: 6'3"

Wt: 230lbs

40: 4.65

Other offers: CSU, New Mexico, Memphis, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Louisiana Monroe, New Mexico

Rivals ***

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Vincent-Hobbs-127226

Scout ***

He used to play WR and has just recently converted to the TE position. A weakness in Hobbs game may be his ability to block but that's just purely speculative on my part.

As BigVII noted his dream school was UT but never received an offer.

Check out the catch at :15 secs into the video

The Ralphie Report 2 Great articles in the DC about incoming recruits

Kyle Ringo does as a great job explaining how CU landed 3 top tier recruits from an elite HS.

Kenneth Crawley is described as the most game ready of the 3 from Woodson. What's interesting is how Wayne Johnson, Woodson HC, describes De'Jon Wilson -

De'Jon is a kid who can be an All-American as long as he's doing what he's supposed to do and learning the system and everything the Colorado staff asks of him," he said. "If he's doing that and he's playing fast every play, you all are going to see an animal."

This is something I have read before about De'Jon. The kid has a high ceiling but the key will be for the CU staff to get this guy to play every down.

The article doesn't expound much on Walker other than saying he is the most versatile of the group. It should be interesting to see what position he ends up at.

What surprised me was Wayne Johnson's admiration for Greg Brown.

Johnson said he is a longtime admirer of CU defensive coordinator Greg Brown. He said he and Brown teach many of the same things to their defensive backs. In fact, Johnson began using a teaching tape that Brown put together 20 years ago during his first stint in Boulder as secondary coach under Bill McCartney.

Who knew. I think the pipeline from Woodson to CU is a great new development by the staff and hopefully it pays off for years to come.

http://www.buffzone.com/ci_19845482

The other article breaks down our 2 high profile incoming QB's. I'm still not sold that Dillon is the real deal but I am optimistic that he will have time to mature and develop behind Connor Wood, who I'm excited about. I have read that one of the big reasons Wood could not lock down the starting QB spot at UT was because of his inaccuracy. I was extremely impressed with the job Rip Sherer did with Hansen. It took a while but towards the end of the year Hansen had really shown marks of improvement. If Rip can do the same job with Wood that he did with Hansen I think 6-7 wins next season is not out of the question.

The Ralphie Report Damiene Cain out for the Rest of the Season

Looks like some off the court issues will keep Damiene off the team for the rest season. There is some question about whether he will ever rejoin the program.

Damiene did not have an impact in any of the games he played in but his size was something I saw as a tremendous asset. He was ranked by Rivals 150 prospects of the 2011 recruiting class.

I wish this kid the best in whatever he's dealing with.

The Ralphie Report * UPDATED * Big Recruiting Weekend for Football

I know it would be nice to get some more practices under the belts of returning players but with no bowl to plan for the entire staff is concentrating on recruiting. Embree is currently in New Orleans trying to pick up a commit from Gerron Borne, a 6'2" DT. He is currently committed to Arizona but plans on decommitting soon.

Some big names will be paying a visit to the CU campus this weekend.

Commits

  • DT Tyler Henington ***
  • RB/FB Clay Norgard *** (now ranked as the 4th best FB in the nation by Rivals)
  • WR Gerald Thomas *** (runs a 4.3 in the 40)
  • DE De'Jon Wilson *** (from H.D. Wilson H.S)

Prospects

There is a cold front moving into Colorado which should keep temps in the mid 20’s to mid 30’s all weekend. On the other hand the fresh snow on the Flat Irons should be impressive.

The Ralphie Report CU Recruiting Update

I am completely bored at work today so here’s an update on CU’s recruiting efforts.

Conference recruiting rankings as of 8/30 (based on quantity and quality of recruits as per their douchie ranking system)

1.       SEC – average recruit per team – 15.7

2.       Big 12 –average recruit per team – 12.9

3.       ACC - average recruit per team – 15.5

4.       Big 10 - average recruit per team – 12.9

5.       Big East - average recruit per team – 14.4

6.       Pac 12 - average recruit per team – 11.3

Pretty shocking that Pac 12 ranked last amongst the 6 big conferences. Pac 12 is followed by MWC and Conference USA.

Rankings within the Pac 12

1.       Arizona State – 18 commits – 0/5 star, 1/4 star, 15/3 stars, 6/2 stars, 1 NR (Team ranking 18)

2.       USC – 9 commits – (3 top 100 commits) 1/5 star, 5/4 stars, 3/3 stars (Team ranking 25)

3.       Washington – 17 commits -  0/5 stars, 3/4 stars, 9/3 stars, 5/2 stars (Team ranking 27)

4.       Arizona – 14 commits – 0/5 stars, 0/4 stars, 12/3 stars, 2/2 stars, 1 NR (Team ranking 39)

5.       Stanford – 11 commits (1 Top 100 commit) 0/5 stars, 2/4 stars, 8/3 stars, 1/2 star (Team ranking 40)

6.       UCLA – 10 commits 0/5 stars, 2/4 stars, 6/3 stars, 3/2 stars (Team ranking 44)

7.       Oregon – 8 commits 0/5 stars, 2/4 stars, 6/3 stars (Team ranking 48)

8.       Colorado – 13 commits 0/5 stars, 0/4 stars, 10/3 stars, 2/2 stars, 1 NR (Team ranking 49)

9.       Oregon State – 10 commits (1 top 100 commit) 0/5 stars, ¼ star, 6/3 stars, 3/2 stars (Team ranking 55)

10.   Cal – 5 commits (1 top 100 commit) 1/5 star, 2/4stars, 1/3 star, 1/2 star (Team ranking 63)

11.   Utah – 9 commits 0/5 stars, 0/4 stars, 7/3 stars, 2/2 stars (Team ranking 64)

12.   Washington State – 11 commits 0/5 stars, 0/4 stars, 7/3 stars, 3/2 stars, 1 NR (Team ranking 65)

Big 10’s newest loser

1.       Nebraska – 6 commits 0/5 stars, 3/4 stars, 2/3 stars, 1/2 star

What jumps out here is how low Oregon is. I also am continually shocked at how bad Tedford is at recruiting. Colorado is ranked 49th nationally in recruiting ahead of Iowa 50, Maryland 51, Minnesota 52, Mississippi  53, Georgia Tech 54 and… Nebraska 60

The Ralphie Report Practice 8/8/11 Recap

After three straight D wins the offense gets a W. Rodney stewart was the best player on the field and had 2 long touchdowns. One was thing of beauty when his intended hole never developed he cut back 5 yards along the line and broke a seam. He was able to finish the play and earn the TD with his speed.

Tyler looked great. Sounds like he has been working on his cadence. He was able to draw the D offside 3 times. He had 2 runs for first downs and had a beautiful throw on a free play to P rich for 70 yds. If you like big hits your going to love this team.

They really got on it today. The O line allowed a lot of pressure at first but gave Hirshcman and Tyler plenty of time towards the end. As mentioned the D was getting pressure. They had a couple of sacks and Big hit Rip batted down a ball on the O's goaline.

Parker Orms injured himself again. He dressed in full pads and must have gotten hurt before I got there. I heard him talking on the sideline and the staffs initial guess is a sprain to the same knee he injured last year.

Special teams were up and down. There was a roughing the punter on one play that continued a drive. Oliver made about a 35 yarder. Grossnickle got pulled for asking for a special ball during a live drill. He shanked a ball from the endzone for about 25 yards. He ran the rest of practice.

I'll add more later. I'm headed to the West end for Phil's wings and a bourbon.

The Ralphie Report Great New Video Blog From THE Ted Miller

This guy has only just begun to cover us and he already gets the entire identity of the program. It’s like night and day from Ubben who had no clue what CU was about.

Ted compares CU to three movies; The Hangover, Heartbreak Ridge and The Gauntlet. The Hangover is used for all the obvious reasons. If you went to sleep in 2004, when Klatt got concussed and we got stomped by UT, and woke up today you would have a killer hangover and would be jonsing for an Illegal Pete’s breakfast burrito to get that horrible Janet Reno of a coach taste out of your mouth. We’ve become a punch line in Vegas and now must set out on a journey that will get us our mojo back.

Heartbreak Ridge is used because Embree plays the part of an old school foul mouthed marine who has to whip a bunch of misfits into shape. While I don’t think our players are a bunch of misfits, although that whole monkey thing last year was odd, I would say they don’t really fit the Pac 12 cookie cutter.

Lastly Miller uses The Gauntlet to highlight The brutal schedule that awaits the Buffs.

Kudos Miller

The Ralphie Report CJ for Regent 2012!

Charles Johnson is looking at a possible run as a democrat for the Colorado Board Regents. I like CJ and listening to him on the radio for the past couple of years I can say I share most of his political viewpoints.  If he gets elected there would finally be a strong voice on the side of athletics. That’s something I think most people who post here can get excited about. Athletics may not be the most pressing issue for a University but it should be acknowledged for what it is, CU’s biggest revenue generating department and it’s best opportunity to recruit athletes and students from around the country. I know this won’t be his only platform; CJ is a standup individual and has been an extremely positive figure in the Community ever since he arrived in Colorado, but he will definitely not let the issue stand on the sidelines.

I think he has a very realistic chance to win but what I am wondering is if you are a Republican and a CU fan will you vote for CJ. Sitting on the board of regents seems like a far less partisan political position than most. This post is not meant to spur a debate on politics or party affiliation but rather to try and gauge where people might stand on a CJ candidacy.

The Ralphie Report Gerald Thomas 3 star WR Commits to CU

CU continues its success in Texas even after leaving the Big 12. Gerald stands at 5.10", 170 lbs. CU beats 10 other schools including Pac 12 foes Arizona, Arizona State, and former Big 12 foes Kansas and Iowa State. This kid looks athletic and hella fast (4.37 in the 40 according to Rivals). Scout.com has him running a 4.5 in the 40 which seems to be a big discrepancy.  I have read that he ran the 4.3 at the TCU camp.

Rivals has him at 3 stars

Scout 3 Stars

ESPN 75 grade and #112 WR in the country

I can’t find any video on him but from what I have read he's a talented kid.

The Ralphie Report CU Picks Up 3 Star Wide Reciever Jeffrey Thomas

Jeff committed Saturday so this isn’t breaking news.

Another Texan! He had 9 total offers including Iowa State and Boise State. The lack of more schools might be due to the fact a knee injury cut his season short. He was recruited by bobby Kennedy.

What I like about this kid the most is his height. Depending on where you look he is listed at 6.3” -6.4”, 180-190lbs. After taking a look at his film I'm encouraged by a few things. I like the fact that some of his video includes some great blocking. Not the fastest guy in the world (4.6 in the 40) but he has play making ability after the catch. This guy is gogin to be a great target in the corner of the endzone.

The Ralphie Report Shane Dillon 4 Star QB Committs to CU

Dillon is a tall, thin quarterback that has a quick release and a live arm. Despite his lack of size, he shows toughness and the ability to stand tall in the pocket, release the ball, and take a hit. He has good footwork and is an adequate runner. He doesn't have a rocket for an arm, but because of his release, the ball arrives quickly. Needs to take less chances when he's under pressure as he'll throw into traffic at times

Great pick up by the staff. Shane is 6' 5" and 185 lbs and currently plays for Christain Jr Sr High in El Cajon, CA. he had offers from Cincinatti, Arizona, and Colorado. Scouts gives him 3 stars Rivals gives him 4.

The Ralphie Report What Now Mr. Bohn?!?

After the euphoria of news that CU will be one of the top revenue earning athletic programs in the country has finally set in many fans have one statement left. Show me the money!

Mr. Investigative sleuth aka John “my eyebrows will soon impale my retinas” Henderson, had an interesting article in the Post on Saturday. I know we all despise John, and we all should, but this article may be the only example of reporting where he has kept everything above the belt. Henderson detailed some of the top priorities for new funding according to his conversation with Mike Bohn.

Bohn will put a lot of money in places fans may not see. He must pay $5.5 million left from an $8 million loan in 2006 which paid off former football coach Gary Barnett's contract, paid Boise State for the hiring of football coach Dan Hawkins and settled the lawsuit from CU's recruiting ordeal years ago. CU also owes the Big 12 a $6 million exit fee for leaving the conference to join the Pac-12…

After those necessities come some game-experience improvements. Bohn wants to upgrade Folsom Field's Flatirons Club, the antiquated donor seating area below the press box.

"We're looking at all infrastructures," Bohn said. "Video boards, restrooms and concession stands. The full gamut."

It sounds like it might be some time before any other sports are added as Bohn wants to get everything in order and in the black before expanding the athletic department. Because of title IX requirements the next 2 sports added will have to be women’s teams. The first sport most likely to be added would be women’s lacrosse.

lacrosse has the inside edge... Colorado high schools are a hotbed for college women's lacrosse programs. Eight girls are expected to get Division I scholarships this spring, and Colorado would be a logical eighth conference member in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The league includes the three current Pac-10 schools playing women's lacrosse — Stanford, Oregon and California — plus Denver, which would provide a natural rivalry.

I haven’t heard any guesses on what the second sport might be so allow your imaginations to run wild. If most of us had our choice it would be women’s softball. This may make the most sense for a transition into men’s baseball, which would be a long ways into the future. A women’s softball team would allow the athletic department to begin building modest facilities for a baseball team. More than likely it would take the help of a private donor. Oregon’s newly christened stadium set Nike, I mean the Ducks, back $19 million. By no means would we build a facility on par with Oregon’s but you would think that it would take at least half of that $19 million to make adding a baseball program worthwhile.

Cal is an interesting example of how to get a baseball team back up and running. They plan on treating games more like a semi pro events, with theme nights, outfield advertising and field naming rights. Here is an interesting article from the WSJ profiling the reinstatement of baseball at Cal.

The Ralphie Report Rivals Reports Creer Likely to Commit to CU

Colorado Buzztap tweeted it today.

From Adam Munsterteiger -

Barring a surprising development, Malcolm Creer is expected to commit to Colorado.

http://colorado.rivals.com/barrier_noentry.asp?ReturnTo=&sid=&script=content.asp&cid=1181348&fid=&tid=&mid=&rid=

Creer looks like he has great potential and could be a great combination with Speedy in the backfield. Creer looks to have good balance, not the tallest back but thick, and hard to tackle. Maybe the best part of his game is the lack of dancing at scrimmage. He hits the hole with authority which could be helpful in short yardage situations. Creer also played on both sides of the ball in high school.

Check out the video at 1:08 where he completely levels a receiver. The kid also looks like he has good hands as he picks off some pretty unbelievable passes in the film.

The Ralphie Report Jermaine Clark and Rashad Hall Commit to CU

Both RB's from Oakridge H.S. in North Carolina. These commitments brings CU's 2011 class to 12.

Rashad is 6' 195 and 4.3 in the 40. Rivals gives him 2 stars. Looks like he has some good speed and nice size. He had offers from Cal, Oregon and Washington State.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbc1ac_rashad-hall-rb-jefferson-forest_sport

Jermain Clark 6'2" 198 lbs. 4.6 in the 40, and given 2 stars by Rivals. Jermain played on both sides of the ball in high school and has a good shot at playing fullback. For what its worth Bleacher Report considers both players to be a reach and they may have trouble qualifying academically. Jermain had offers from Washington State, Nevada, and Wyoming.

Rashad looks like he might be the most promising player and the fact that Cal and Oregon were recruiting him should ease concerns about his academics. Jermain has the size to be a fullback which we are in desperate need of.

The Ralphie Report I Already Like Ted Miller More than David Ubben

Ted's finally getting some questions from Buff fans.

Justin from Butte, Mont., writes: it's fairly obvious that you caught the CU-Cal game last year. It was an ugly game that started really bad and only got worse. Keep in mind that Colorado outperformed UCLA and Washington State (a team that's given credit for being on the rise) in a year where the head coach was fired mid-season. They were one game away from being bowl eligible in the very same season. There were definitely bad games, but CU also beat Georgia and Kansas State. You can think poorly of them now and focus squarely on the Cal game, but I think you'll be surprised this coming season. The new coaching staff can only improve what the team was under Hawkins. Throw in the small class of recruits with the vast majority of the team coming back and CU is going to be a contender.

Ted Miller: Loving the Colorado questions. Welcome!

Yes, that 52-7 loss at California damaged my perception of Colorado, perhaps more than it should have. And you make a good point about the rest of the Buffaloes season. They finished 5-7 with two losses by less than a TD as well as that epic meltdown versus Kansas.

I think Colorado will be competitive immediately, but I don't know if the Buffaloes will contend in the top-half of the South in 2011. They have a new coach, new staff, a questionable defense and a bit of uncertainty at quarterback.

But the move to the Pac-12 will help the Buffaloes get back into the mix nationally. The bump in Southern California recruiting will be a huge benefit.

Eric from New York writes: How would you rate John Embree's newly finalized coaching staff at Colorado? It's just been reported that the final piece, Rip Scherer (QB Coach for the Carolina Panthers) has come on board.Full Staff:OC - Eric BienemyDC - Greg BrownOL - Steve MarshallQB - Rip SchererWR - Bobby KennedyTE/ST - JD BrookhartILB - Brian CabralDT - Mike TuiasosopoOLB/DE - Kanavis McGheeS&C - Malcolm Blacken (Washington Redskins).

Ted Miller: On paper, it looks like a good staff. Lots of Pac-10 and NFL experience. Plenty of proven guys.

I've always thought that one of the first questions athletic directors interviewing coaching candidates should ask is: "Tell me about your coaching staff." My guess is one of Embree's selling points was his ability to put together this staff.

Now lets see how they work together with the talent they've inheritted. And how they recruit.

Pretty fair assesments of both questions. Ted still picks us to finish at the middle to bottom half of the South. I can accept that based on how we played last year and the team playing under a brand new system.

The Ralphie Report Denver Post Announces Rip Sherer as QB Coach

http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_17136819

Rip comes to CU via the Carolina Panthers

Scherer, 58, was the quarterbacks coach for two years at Carolina after serving as an assistant head coach with the Cleveland Browns from 2005-08. In Carolina, Scherer worked with rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen. While in Cleveland, Scherer coached Broncos backup quarterback Brady Quinn during Quinn's stint in a Browns uniform.

On second glance this is yet another coach that comes to the CU coaching staff directly from the NFL which several of our recent recruits have listed as big reason they have signed on. With the this hire the staff looks to be complete.

The Ralphie Report CU Recieves 23 Points in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll

CU came behind West Virginia (12-4) 54; Georgia (13-3) 52; Temple (12-4) 44; Cincinnati (16-2) 42; Gonzaga (13-5) 39; Utah State (16-2) 24.

Let the lobbying begin. I think this is about right and actually am a little surprised at receiving that many votes. The losses in the road earlier this year probably kept us out of the top 25. That said we have some very winnable games coming up against Nebraska on Tuesday and Oklahoma on Saturday. Win 2 road games and stay undefeated in the Big 12 and we should go into the KU game ranked.

Most people have predicted 9-10 wins should get CU in the top 6 of the Big 12. ESPN has projected that the Big 12 will receive 6 invites. We are way ahead of schedule so let's hope this team keeps playing with a chip on its shoulder.

For those complaining about the $45 dollar tickets to the KU game, PONY UP! You pay for the product on the flour and these kids are giving CU everything they have. CU hasn't played this well in 15 years and the match up against Kansas should be well worth the money.

Go Buffs!

The Ralphie Report Stevie Joe Dorman QB Commit

Adam Munstinger just tweeted that Stevie Joe Dorman has commited to CU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m8TdpWoJks

He's a big boy at 6.4". Looks like Embo likes some size at QB. Only a two star guy but this should give us some needed depth at the position.

Colorado has received a commitment from Somerset (Texas) High QB Stevie Joe Dorman. His uncle is former Buff QB Koy Detmer. http://twitter.com/#!/adamcm777

The Ralphie Report Brent Burnette

Pretty interesting sign. Does this mean Embo wants to light a fire underneath an already perpetually blistered Hansen ass? Apparently Brent quit his Juco team in March, 2010. Not sure what he has been doing since but he is a big boy, at 6.3" 210 lbs, and will join CU in his Juniorish/Senior year. Adam Munsterieger promises he has enough credits to get accepted. Here is a link to some sweet tape filmed by Uncle Rico. Seems to have a pretty decent arm but there is no footage at all of him scrambling. He also seems to have a tendency to stare down his receivers.

I'm no QB scout but the Toledo Mudhen stadiums this guy has been playing in either make this guy a diamond in the rough or a complete reach. Either way it does not seem like much of a gamble considering the grab bag class we will most likely end up with and the fact that we only have to burn a one/two yearish scholarship on the guy.

The Ralphie Report Tyler Not Happy with Benching

There was an article in the Daily Camera today about Hansen getting benched during the Mizzou game and taking a little umbrage with the call. He spoke with reporters after practice yesterday and had some sharp words for the staff. Can you blame him this guy has been getting jerked around ever since he has gotten here. He finally gets the starting job goes out and has the game of his career and then finds himself riding the pine a week later.

If this kid joins the ranks of yet another recruit to set sail Hawkins can pretty much kiss the cohesiveness of  his entire team goodbye.

Tyler also points out how the call to send a lone receiver on a fly pattern when CU was backed up in their own endzone was a little ridiculous. He also points out the predictability of the offense and the need to shake things up a bit. How can things be so apparent to a player yet completely lost on the staff?

I try not to keep piling on the sinking ship that is Hawkins future but the guy doesn’t do himself any favors.

The Ralphie Report Chip Brown Says CU to Pac-12 North

With the Utah, the Washington's, and the Oregon's. This guy is really getting on my nerves with all of the inside info. So much for the zipper league that would pretty much be beneficial for everyone.

I think this hurts us not being able to make an annual appearance in the LA area although it looks like it could be semiannual.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Cal home game next year.

The Ralphie Report It’s Time to Start Thinking About Next Year’s Coach

I know a lot of people in the media hold back from naming potential candidates for the job as a gesture to the sitting coach but we as fans are more invested in the program and we aren’t in the media. I was behind Hawkins from day one. I might have been one of the first one hundred or so people to congratulate him as I ran into him at the Pearl Street Old Chicago and wished him luck. But now it’s time to call a spade a spade. It’s been almost 5 years and we have not seen one inch of progression. It’s a shame because I truly believe we have an exceptional group of kids down there that haven’t been coached up to anywhere near their potential.

That in mind I would like to hear who all of you would like to see take the reins next year.

Here are my initial observations.

Eric Bieniemy – I know a lot of people are not 100% convinced but think about it, EB has been successful at every level. He has ties to the Pac 10 and the NFL. Above all this guy bleeds Black and Gold and will receive nothing but respect and help from every former buff still attached to the program. What better way to reinvigorate CU fans and Alum than with a CU champion. If Eric is successful at CU we would have a very good chance of keeping this guy for a long time. Because of his ties to CU this would be his dream job and would have to think long and hard about moving on for more money.

Tosh Lupoi – No ties to CU but has a steep history with the Pac 10 as a former Cal player and current Cal Defensive Coordinator. This guy can flat out recruit and has been very successful in California. He is very young only 30 but one thing we all have to keep in mind is that we don’t have a lot of money to throw at a proven coach. This guy undoubtedly will be a head coach of a D 1 football team down the road. One risk he becomes successful and jumps ship at the first sign of a big contract because he has no ties to CU.

Dave Logan – I myself don’t think this would be a good fit. Yeah Dave is a great guy and has been successful at the high school level  but what does that really tell us. I would entertain the idea of a Texas, Florida, or California high school coach but come on Colorado isn’t necessarily known for its blue chip programs or recruits. What chance if any does Dave have going into a California kids living room convincing them he can return CU to glory by pointing to some hardware he won while coaching in Colorado?  Love the guy but this would be a bad choice.

FSU-OU and CU-Cal should be good games, but I have no idea what's going to happen in that OU game. Colorado will give Cal a run, but I think they lose close.
