Football Spring Practice 4-2-11
Was anyone at Saturday's Spaulding practice???
Ralph had a good interview with CRN...but com'on guys...for we alum on the "right coast" we're jonesing for some info.
I read in J. Gold's blog that he's away and that someone is taking his place..but the dude must have been more concerned with Elton John on Saturday Night Live and was living those lyrics:
Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright, alright, alright.
For anyone who made it to Westwood for Saturday's practice...please send along your perspective.
BTW - having graduated from a UCLA grad program in '84 and leaving LA in '95, I watch the 'scenery" beyond CRN in Ralph's interviews and notice the number of "new" highrise buildings...I used to watch FB practice from that parking structure before my 7pm night classes!!
The highrise buildings seen from the perspective of Spaulding have increased dramatically since the '80s...my wife graduated from her Master's program in '80 (we took turns) and that tall brown brick building was the only highrise back then (except for the Library on the North campus). She was at the Neuropsychiatric Institute (as a clinician, not a patient) and that was the tallest building on campus back in the late 20th century.
Lastly...my daughter was born "on campus" at UCLA Medical 19 years ago...she forsook (if that's a word) a D3 soccer "scholie" (actually packaged grants-in-aid) and joined the Navy as a "spook". She'll be working intelligence for the next 5 years while getting her undergraduate degree and then OCS. Hopefully, she to will do her graduate work in Westwood...she's only been to the campus 2x since her birth (both on business trips with me). Unfortunately, we don't get west too often.
So brothers and sisters...please send along any "intelligence" on Saturday's practice.
Be careful of falling for every 5-Star Recruit
"Former USC quarterback Mitch Mustain was arrested late Tuesday night on suspicion of selling prescription drugs."
The Arkansas native's preparation for the upcoming NFL draft on campus at USC during the day obviously didn't preclude him of having a parallel career in sales.
"Bail was originally set at $30,000 but lowered to $10,000 for the felony narcotics charge. Mustain has not paid bail and is still in jail." It can be assumed that the Trogan alumni club was too busy putting $$$ in the pockets of new recruits.
Unfortunately for Muistain, he must have been contemplating his sales career for years since football career never took off after transferring from Arkansas in 2007, considering he was an after thought in four seasons at USC, starting only one game --- a loss --- in 2010.
Who would have thought this would have been the career course and sad outcome for "one of the most sought after high school players in history"?

Justin Medlock...CFL action
Here's a link to an article on the CFL site dateline 9/17/2010.
"(Medlock) rejoined the Argos on Wednesday, signing a contract that runs through the 2011 season, after getting cut by the Washington Redskins and, following a very short stint, the Detroit Lions earlier this summer."
Great picture of Justin kicking...check it out --- the height of his leg make me think that he has to do yoga!!!

UCLA Pros - Week #1 2010
Bruin players on NFL rosters and their results from Thursday 9/9 to 9/13
K-State Experience
Bumping up the post because it deserves more attention. GO BRUINS. -N
While games are played on the field under various weather conditions, rolled-up seasonal data can give an impression for expectations of players, notwithstanding maturity, transfers and cohesion of the team and new assistant coaches. Following the jump are some statistical tidbits concerning the '10 K-State team
Ethics vs. Jurisprudence
Some commentors on Bruin Nation and other UCLA friendly sites seem to confuse UCLA's decision on recinding scholarships to the Richardsons and Shirley as being knee-jerk and premature since the young men haven't had their day in court.

On This Day of Remembrance: UCLA v "School" From "Over There"
While Bruins Nation concentrates mostly on sports related topics, this July 4th day of Remembrance is an appropriate time for us to consider the vital role our university plays in keeping America great across its broad spectrum of learning.
UCLA graduates fill vital professional roles in every avenue of American life, reflecting their expertise gained and the core philosophy extolled by the university. This knowledge is conveyed by the faculty, which is one of the most prestigious in the nation. UCLA is the second highest-rated public university in the country.
Since the other university in Los Angeles can only use its football team as its singular exemplar of existence, UCLA goes well beyond that benchmark to delineate its prominence as a center of academics, not semi-professional sport. Here are but a few examples that underscore the heritage UCLA has in grooming young minds for the challenges facing America in the future.

Lame Kitten Tells The Truth
From Michael McCarthy's column of Sports Television - USA Today:
Andrea Kremer interviewed Lame Kitten for Bryant Gumels' "Real Sports" upcoming show on HBO.
"Kiffin is widely disliked at Tennessee after bolting to accept the Trojans' job. Kremer asks him about preaching loyalty and togetherness when he left after one season. 'I never once told any of those players I would be there forever,' replies Kiffin. When Kremer presses whether that comforted those players he recruited to Knoxville, Kiffin admits: 'No, but it's part of the business. You know, as they get older they understand. That's why they put buyouts in contracts, you know.' Cute. Like a lot of college coaches chasing the next buck, Kiffin wants it both ways."
It's all about the kids, ain't it Coach!
Another So Cal NCAA Infraction?
In light of the recent controversy concerning Reggie Bush and his connection to 'agents,' I wonder if there is a potential issue with former Southern Cal football player and current felon O.J. Simpson's involvement with recruitment infractions...
