Behind the Steel Curtain Jersey Assignment Questions

So, now that the draft is over and the UDFAs have been signed, does anyone know when the Steelers will assign jersey numbers to the new players? Additionally, does anyone know all of the numbers that are reserved? Here are the numbers that I know are not presently being used and/or assigned:

12 - Bradshaw

32 - Harris

36 - Bettis

52 - Webster

58 - Lambert

59 - Ham

63 - Dawson

75 - Greene

(I realize the list of names is almost certainly not necessary for the usual BTSC reader, but I thought I'd add it for any casual visitor and for the sake of completeness).

I assume Ward's 86 will be added to the list. What about 51 for Farrior and 91 for Smith? Does anyone think all three should be taken out of use?

Officially retired - 70 - Stautner.

Have I missed anything?

I just looked at the roster on www.steelers.com, http://www.steelers.com/team/roster.html, and the available numbers are:

1 - 3, 9- 11, 21-22, 35. 37, 48-49, 51, 61, 68, 69, 76, 78, 81, and 91.

So, what number does DeCastro wear? Does he and the FO contact the Webster family out of respect to the late Iron Mike and request it's use? What about Adams, does he take 78 on the assumption that Starks is not re-signed after rehabbing his knee? Does Spence request 51 or 91 since they appear to be the only available LB numbers? Or, do these guys wait until some of the camp bodie are cut? For instance, we currently have two guys assigned #67, Trevis Turner and Kade Weston (who???). Finally, what about Ta’amu?

If you're wondering, I've read all the posts about how great our draft is/was and how awesome it will be next season to watch our OL literally bodyslam the opposition, so I thought I would go in a different direct about the potential impact this draft would have upon the current assignment of jerseys. After all, this may certainly have a direct impact upon us fans since we'll be the ones buying them... I own only two, Lambert and Hines, but I'm thinking about buying another one. I've yet to wear the 86. I'm saving it for our 1st game against the Ratbirds.

Go Steelers!

Behind the Steel Curtain Questions About New Team Leaders

As of this writing, the Steelers have announced that Hines Ward, Aaron Smith, Chris K, and James Farrior will be released by March 13. That is a serious amount of veteran leadershp to cut loose. There has also been talk that Casey Hampton and Larry Foote will soon follow the aforementioned gentlemen out of the door. So, who leades the defense in the absense of Farrior? He has not only called the defensive plays on the field since 2004, but he is the unquestioned leader and captain of the defense. So, from a practical perspective, who takes his spot? I assume that it has to be Larry Foote and can only guess that any speculation about his impending release is just that, speculation. From an emotional, pre-game speech, get-the-troops-fired-up perspective, who takes over? Troy, Deebo, and Timmons are well-known for being quiet, Ike doesn't seem to have the personality for it, and Keisel doesn't have the gravitas or necessary force of will to really lead the Steelers defense. My guess is that Ryan Clark will step up and become the emotional and spiritual leader in Farrior's absense. If nothing else, his willingness to lay the wood to WRs and RBs inspires the heck out of me... I'm concerned about positional leadership. With Smith and Ward being released, who will become the leade of the WRs and DEs. It seems like a no-brainer that Keisel will assume Smith's mantle of leadership for the DEs, but he clearly has some big shoes to fill. Will it be enough? I love the Bearded One, but he is certainly not Smith from an athletic stand point, so there is at least a question about whether he will commmand the same level of respect from the cast of characters we have on the DL. Smtih's absense is also compounded by the fact that Hampton will be in rehab, rather than lending a hand in grooming our younger DL. I can only hope and assume that Hood, Heyward, and the rest have learned enough in their time in the system and that Coach Mitchell keeps the DL mill churning. Offense is where my real concerns come into efffect. In Ward's absense, we can only assume that Ben is now the indisputable leader of that offense. Ward's style was "I will take your best shot, laugh at you, and then crush you later in the game." Ward was a "I'm going to hit you harder than you can hit me" style of leadership. Ben is more like Rocky Balboa in that he keeps taking the hits, gets up again to take more hits, and then delvers a knock out blow to win in the end. I don't see anyone else on the offense even being in the ballpark to challenge or otherwise dispute Ben's role as the leader of the offense. What does this mean for the offense? Will it become, as it appeared last year, a rope-a-dope, wear them down kind of offense similar to Ben's playing style? What impact will Coach Haley have on this? What does Ward's release mean for the WRs? Will the group lose the physiical style of play that Ward demonstrated for so long? Who will step up as the new leader for the WRs? Wallace has shown that he is not the same type of player as Ward, so I don't think he is the best candidate. Brown seems more willing to mix it up, but I'm still waiting for him to really lay a guy out. Cotchery appears to be similar to Brown in that he will block when he has to, but I hope that our WRs retain Ward's zeal for cracking back on DEs and LBs with reckless abandon. My guess s that Cotchery, if retained, will be the veteran that emerges as the leader of the WR position for the Steelers. What do you guys think? Finally, what players, if any, do you think are still yet to released?

Behind the Steel Curtain Order A Ward Jersey

As I sit here today, reading all of the wonderful stories and tributes to Hines Ward, I've tried to come up with my own way of showing my love and appreciation to this great football player. After spending the day thinking about this, I've decided to order a Ward jersey to wear for the 2012 season and beyond. This is not something I do lightyly. I only own one jersey, #58 for my favorite player of all time, Jack Lambert. In fact, that is the only professional jersey that I have ever worn. I toyed with the idea of ordering one for a current player, even seeking input from my fellow BTSC readers, but never made the plunge. Now, today, I am the proud owner of a second Steeler jersey, that of Hines Ward. In my humble view, Ward, like Lambert before him, played the game the way it is meant to be played, with an insane intensity that results in his bone-jarring (and sometimes breaking) blocks. I've seen and read a lot of great tributes to Hines today, but none that allowed me to make a statement about his being cut. So, my way of telling the Rooneys, the NFL, and anyone else that may be interested, that I love Hines Ward for the man and football player that he is, is to order his jersey after he's been cut. For me, it makes sense, because he will always be a Steeler and I'll wear the jersey proudly. He lived up to the ideal of what I hope to see in each and every Steeler by playing every play with pride, passion, and a sense of loyalty to his teammates.

Behind the Steel Curtain Mechem Is Right

As I read and listen to all of the blogs, websites, and various other mechanisms of communication today, I am sick of all the candy-ass wimps out there that are attacking James Harrison. Here are some of the articles popping up on the internet: ESPN: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/37577/steelers-james-harrison-just-isnt-learning Yahoo: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Headhunter-James-Harrison-flagged-for-vicious-h?urn=nfl-wp13494 Now, according to these two writers, James Harrions is a "headhunter" and takes "cheap shots." To both of them, I say this: review the tape more closely, it was a clean hit. Or, better yet, interview Mr. Harrison in person for his perspective and then call him a "headhunter" or "cheap shot" artist/ As the headline reads, all of this crap is proof-positive that the "pussification" of America is in full effect (Mechem, that is the phrase you coined, right?). I typically do not use this type of language, but I am furious at the audacity of these various moral cowards that attack Harrion's character and personal integrity and I believe they are only engaging in this farce because they have come to think it is perfectly acceptable to do so. James Harrison is a guy that loves his family, plays hard every down, and makes it a point to give back to those less fortunate than himself. Moreover, I've watched the hit on McCoy from every angle and the only thing I see is a dumb-ass kid leaving his feet in front of JAMES HARRISON. I realize he was trying to make a play and I applaud his courage, but he put himself at an angle that would have required Harrison to bend over backwards not to hit him with his helmet. If McCoy doesn't leave his feet, Harrion's hit would have been a text-book perfect form tackle. Instead, the kid jumps up to dump off the pass, less than two steps away from an on-coming tackler, and gets hit in the chin. Even with that move, the hit was still facemask to facemask, and not crown-to-crown. Yes, the hit was severe, but that is part of the game. Furthermore, McCoy was running, not sitting back in the pocket in a defenseless posture that needs protection. Maybe I'm off on this one, but I am sick and tired of all the cheese-dicks taking such cheap shots at the Steelers.

Behind the Steel Curtain Players I like . . . later in the draft or as FA

It seems eveyrone wants to discuss our 1st round pick.  I'd rather go another way, so I've been reading a ton of sites, (NFL draft blitz, NFLdraft scout, consensus draft coverage, etc) when I have a free minute and looking for players that we can either sign as free agents or select late in the draft.  Here are a few I've come across that caught my attention:

Here is a look at how I think our defense will fare against Tampa Bay's offense.  I like to provide background informatiojn, so below I briefly lay out what I know/think about the 3-4 defense and then I look at the individual match-ups that we should see in the game..  Hope it is worth your time

Behind the Steel Curtain Weekly Offensive Match Up: Tampa Bay

As previously noted, time and schedule permitting, I will try to post a weekly match-up from an offensive and defensive perspective addressing the various position battles for the week's upcoming game.  Obviously, i did not have time to post a match up of our D against the Falcons and I did not have time to post anything last week due to a very busy work schedule.    Sorry about that.  In any event, here is my take for this week.

Behind the Steel Curtain Is there a QB worth taking from another team's PS?

In light of the injury to Dixon, and in response to a comment I saw on another post, I thought I'd do some quick research to find out if there are any QBs on another team's PS that we should think about signing.  I asume that we don't want to sign a FA off the street because, presumabely, if they were any good, they would be employed.  I found a site that provides the PS roster for each NFL team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_NFL_team_rosters).   I'm only listing the teams that actually have a QB on their PS.  Here is the list after the jump:

Behind the Steel Curtain This Week's Matchup: Offense

I've been thinking about a fanpost where we break down the individual matchups in each game for the season.  Here is my first cut at this for the game agaisnt Atlanta.  Time permitting, I'll try to put one together each week.  I'll also try to get one done from the defensive perspective.  I apologize in advance for the typos... I'm terrible at editing my own writing, particuarly on a screen.

Behind the Steel Curtain Practice Squad Rules

Just downloaded the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement ("CBA").  Here are the rules for the Practice Squad:

Article XXXIV of the CBA:  Teams may have eight practice squad players. A team cannot simply assign a fringe player to the practice squad. He must first be waived and go unclaimed by another club. The player then would become a free agent, not bound to sign a practice squad deal.

Players must meet one of the following criteria while previously not being on a practice squad more than two seasons:

  1. No accrued seasons of NFL experience.
  2. Free agents who were on an active roster for fewer than nine regular-season games during their accrued seasons.
  3. A season on the practice squad constitutes three weeks.
  4. A practice squad player remains free to sign with any other club, but once signed must remain on the new team's 53-man roster unless cut.

Behind the Steel Curtain Question Concerning Steeler Jersey

The primary reason I am a Steeler fan is because of my great love for Jack Lambert while growing up in Brooklyn, NY.  The Jets and Giants play in New Jersey and as a kid in NYC I had no idea Buffalo was part of NY until I got to high school, which was way too late for me to change allegiance   Lambert represented everything I loved about football:  he was tough, loyal, and someone I could relate as a skinny white kid with bad teeth.   Accordingly, I have always worn a Lambert jersey while watching games and the draft.  After 23 years and after enduring constant abuse for not wearing the jersey of an active player, I have decided to buy an active player's jersey.  To that end, I would love input/suggestions from those of you here at BTSC.  Although only a member for a short time, I have come to respect many of the opinions expressed on this site.  I would like to wear the jersey of a player that thinks and acts like Lambert... i.e., "mess with a Steeler and you get you ass kicked."  The obvious choices are Ward and Harrison, but everyone seems to wear those two and they are well represented.  I thought about Colon, but he is gone for the reason and potentially may not play again as a Steeler.  Popular choices are, obviously, Ben, Mendy,  Polamalu, Miller, and Wallace.  So, avoiding those that are previously named, what do you think?  Who, in your opinion, is tough, loyal, and won't take any crap from anyone in the NFL?  I know whom I'm leaning towards, but I'd love to see what my fellow fans of the B&G think.  Thanks in advance.

Behind the Steel Curtain Signings and Cuts

SteelCityInsider is reporting that the Steelers announced the signing s today of 3rd-round pick Emmanuel Sanders, 5C pick Stevenson Sylvester, 6A pick Jonathan Dwyer, and 6B pick Antonio Brown.

The site is also reporting that seven players were cut.  They are:

WR Jason Chery,

K Piotr Czech,

LB Derrick Doggett,

P Adam Graessle,

NT Cordarrow Thompson,

C Bradley Vierling, and

CB Trae Williams.

Nice to see we're locking up our picks.

Some concerns:  Will there be any competition in the kicking game?  I can't remember if there are any other K or P on the roster other than Reed and RoboPunter.  I don't see how this squares with Tomlin's core belief that competition brings out the best in athletes.  I'm suprised we cut Doggett without letting him have a chance to actually suit up and hit someone.  Perhaps all the LBs in the draft doomed him, but I thought he was specifically brought in to play on ST.  Finally, the Thompson cut is also a surprise, but I guess they like Paxson and McClendon.

Behind the Steel Curtain Question About Undrafted Free Agents

SteelCityInsider is reporting that the Steelers signed the following free agennts:

* Offensive guard Dorian Brooks, 6-2, 306, James Madison.

* Safety Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith, 6-2, 210, UTEP.

* Offensive tackle Kyle Jolly, 6-6, 300, North Carolina.

* Fullback Demetrius Taylor, 6-0, 273, Virginia Tech.

* Defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson, 6-2, 301, Virginia Tech

* Safety Justin Thornton, 6-1, 213, Kansas.

* Center/guard A.J. Trump, 6-3, 300, Miami.

However, I did a quick search on google and Demetrius Taylor appears to be a defensive tackle rather than a full back.  Does anyone have any insight on whether this is a typographical error or are we trying this guy out as a fullback?

Anyone have any opinions on the rest of the signees?

Behind the Steel Curtain Rounds 4 - 7

With a night to think about who the Steelers should select with their remaining picks in rounds 4 - 7 of the 2010 NFL draft, I have been looking at all the prospective athletes that are still available and thought I would put some thoughts down on potential picks.  I view these rounds as based upon drafting solely for need rather than best player available because at some point, the line between talent and need must become too blurry, so I set the line at the 4th round   First, we need to decide what positions should be addressed with our remaining picks.  As you all know, we've added our future OC, improved depth at OLB, and took a WR in round 3.  So, what remains as a need position?  I know many of you have been calling for a CB or S to improve the play of our secondary.  However, I agree with those that have posted that we should give Burnette and Lewis a chance to really understand our defensive system before using picks to replace them.  Moreover, if it took Troy P a year to learn it, it only seems fair to give those kids a little more time.  I know, that is difficult in the face of getting lit up by someone like B. Gradkowski, but I have always been told patience is a virtue.  I would love to see some depth and/or competition added at the S position.  I realize we signed Will Allen for just that reason, but I am not convinced Mundy is the long-term solution.  Also, I am extremely worried about the level of abuse Troy takes from the manner in which he throws his body around.  So, I am really hoping we grab a S in the 4th round.  We also need depth and/or a future starter at the NT spot as Team H & H are getting long in the tooth.  Finally, I would also love a replacement for Spaeth at TE.   I love Heath, but I would also like to see us draft a guy that is really a OT living in a TE's body that mauls people in the run game.  In an effort to expedite the conversation, here are the remaining players that various websites think might be worth drafting at each position.

Some caveats:   1) The foregoing rankings are taken from ESPN, NFL Draft Blitz, and NFL Draft Scout and sort of mashed together based on a combination of what the sites are posting and what I think; 2) the rankings are based on the remaining players, rather than an overall rank; 3) if there are any errors or omissions, they are my fault; and 4) if you know of a player that was omitted and should have been added, please let me know.

As noted above, from my perspective, we desperately need depth at Safety and Nose Tackle and could improve at back-up Tight End, back-up Tackle (I think the window is rapidly closing on Hills and Essex and Foster, Urbik, and Legursky appear to be back-ups for now) and maybe we think about a potential replacement/depth for Farrior if he calls it quits after this season.  Consequently, I would like our remaining picks to look something like this:

4th:  Safety (Jones, Chancellor, or Asante)

5th:  Nose Tackle: (Cam Thomas) [note - I would like to see us package some of our picks and move up to the 4th because I think Thomas is gone by the 5th]

5th:  Offensive Tackle: (Ed Wang)

5th: Inside linebacker:  (Chaney, Hull, or Sharton (Sharton is a little small, but fast and would be solid in pass coverage))

5th:  Tight End:  (Michael Hoomanawanui -  he is 6;5, 275 and look like a small OT!)

6th:  Full Back: (Dennis Morris - 6'2, 245. 463 in the 40 an I hope he is nothing more than a tank that we use to clear running lanes for Mendenhall, Redman, Summers or whatever RB is toting the rock for us.  I miss Kreider.

From a Free Agent perspective, I'd love to see us sign WR Kelton Tindal - Newberry.  His numbers are  6'1, 197  with a 4.28 in the 40.  He is supposed to be a poor man's Mike Wallace.  If we could get him on our practice squad and coach him up, he might be a great complement to Wallace down the road.  Just a thought.  Anyone have any sleepers they would like to see signed as a free agent?

Hope every one enjoys the last 4 rounds of this year's draft.

Go Steelers!
