Buffalo Rumblings Anyone Else Tired of Being Embarrassed?

Call me brash, but I think we have finally passed the Raiders for the title of the league's most dysfunctional/habitually terrible franchise.

As if the score of yesterday's game was not bad enough, I had to watch Drayton Florence commit the dumbest/undisciplined penalty I have ever seen, and I had to read a PFT article in which Mark Sanchez credited the Bills "trash talking" for giving the Bills motivation. I am willing to underwrite being simply terrible, but I will never underwrite a terrible team that still displays arrogance. What exactly has our team accomplished in the last 20 years? How many wins does our team have this year? Maybe the 53 overpaid, under skilled "trash talkers" should ask themselves these questions and adjust their priorities. It appears as though they are no longer the "blue collar" Buffalo Bills that we have all come to love over the years.

I have religiously followed the Bills since I was 5 years old (well over 20 years), despite the fact that I have lived all over the world. Regardless of where my job takes me, I would always be glued to the TV screen/radio/internet to hear how the Bills were doing each Sunday. For years, I have been ridiculed by every other football fan I have encountered; every time, I would argue that the Bills were on the upswing, and that we would soon be back in the playoffs. Well, needless to say, I have been a liar for 20 years.

Some of the recent moves have really made me question where the people directing this franchise think we are headed. Here are a few that come to mind:

-Numerous "big name" head coaches turning down the chance to take the team

-The way we railroaded Trent Edwards out of town (a simple benching would have sufficed)

-Mitchell's request to be released

-Our failure to draft a QB or LT this year (really, it's routinely botching the draft)

-Our "knee jerk" changes to the no-huddle offense and 3-4 defense

Really, I think this town has turned in to a graveyard for NFL players, much like Oakland was viewed for many years. The team needs to change the culture and purge our roster. I think there are about 10 guys on the team worth keeping around.

Maybe a rant, but 20 years of frustration is starting to make it hard to still put on my Bills' jersey every Sunday.....

Buffalo Rumblings Ten years from now....

Just for the sake of friendly debate/discussion, I wanted to see where everyone views the current Bills roster as going over the next ten years, in a similar fashion that each draft class is reviewed.  I've made predictions, based off of our current roster, focusing on potential, character, abilities, etc.

Let the debates begin.....

Offense

Demetrius Bell-

I see him as a solid back-up for the next 1-2 years; eventually he will get cut and be unemployed

Brian Brohm-

Likely will not make it through this offseason. If he does, he buys out his time on the roster until a better prospect comes along. Might float around the league for a few years following, but never really makes an impact

Kirk Chambers-

The Bills will keep him around as cheap, reliable depth until he ultimately retires in 3-4 years. Will contiunue to contirbute solid "spot" contributions

Trent Edwards-

Our franchise QB for the next 7-8 years. I have seen enough to believe the can be a winner in the right situation. I view his career numbers looking something like Jake Delhomme's, in terms of wins and stats.

Lee Evans-

Much like Eric Moulds, he will remian here for the better portion of his career. He will habitually flirt with 1100 yards and Pro Bowl appearances, but never wind up in Canton.

Ryan Fitzpatrick-

He will likely remain a career back-up in Buffalo. He has the potential to be among the top-5 back-up QBs in the league (he might be already)

Christian Gaddis-

Likely cut this offseason

Cornell Green-

Will contribute a season or two in reserve duty before he is ultimately cut and unemployed

Geoff Hangartner-

I see him in Levitre and Wood being the strong point of our line over the next 4-5 years. As the three of them emerging as one of the top interior lines in the NFL

James Hardy-

I am a firm believer that Buffalo will take a WR in the first round over the next couple of seasons due to the fact that there is a lot of young talent across the board. When this happens, Hardy is gone. Unless he opens some eyes this year, he garners no interest throughout the league

C.J. Hawthorne-

Remains on the roster for depth purposes this year, but doesn't have any sort of longevity with the team.

Nick Hennessey-

Will habitually be on and off of the practice squad until he is ineligible to do so, then we forget who he ever was

Felton Huggins-

Makes a name on speical teams, but that only buys him 2-3 years on the roster, or the NFL, for that matter

Fred Jackson-

FREDEX is the next Brian Westbrook. He will be the focal-point of our offense until his legs get tired. Will see the Pro Bowl 2-3 times before he hangs up the cleats.

Steve Johnson-

If he could put on some size, I could see him taking the #2 spot from Hardy. That is, of course, until we select a WR in the draft, then he slides to #3 for the next 3-4 years. Will find work elsewhere following his tenure here.

Joe Klopfenstein

One of the most pleasant surprises here. I see Joe as a poor man's Chris Cooley in the right situation. We will earn himself a roster spot and stay there for the next 4-5 years.

Andy Levitre-

Him, Wood and Hang will prove to be among the best interior liunes in Fottball. While I think Wood will garner all fo the accolades, i think Levitre does enough to make him impossible to retain past his initial rooke contract. A career starter.

Marshawn Lynch-

Lynch will do something stupid to get himself suspended this year. After that, he gets cut from Buffalo and pops up on the radar in a Ricky Williams-type fashion over the next 7-8 years. A cautionary tale that will always have us asking "What if?"

Corey McIntyre-

Our starting fullback this season, but not much longer than that. Struggles to find work in the league following his departure from Buffalo

Jamon Meredith-

Cut in training camp this year in favor of late-round OL depth. Garners no interest elsewhere

Shawn Nelson-

Never puts up huge numbers, as Buffalo will continue to ignore TEs in their offense. Kept around based off of potential. He will be the guy that constantly garners "This is his year" discussions.

Roscoe Parrish

Despite the recent debate, Roscoe remians our primary return guy for the next 3-4 years. After that, his legs get tired and his speed stops compensating for his lack of size. Will always have suitors available throughout the league.

Andre Ramsey-

Does not make the team this year

Derek Schouman-

Kept around for his ability to block. Remains a Bill as long as he chooses to and will always have the ability to find a back-up spot in the league

Jonathan Stupar-

Will have another huge preseason this year, but will never do enough to solidify a long-term roster spot. Ultimately garners interest from other teams, but never enoguh to make a career out of it

Jason Watkins-

Does not make the team this year

Eric Wood-

Following full recovery from his injury (not sure how long that takes), Wood will emerge as one of the top-3 guards (or centers) in football. A career Bill who will see numerous trips to the Pro Bowl.

Defense

Jairus Byrd-

While I do not think he will ever put up 9 interceptions again, he will contineu to garner Pro Bowl appearances. Becuase of this, he will be hard to retain past his initial rookie deal. If we can keep him, becomes the focal-point for our secondary for the next 7-8 years

Reggie Corner-

Will be a rotational corner until his intial deal comes to an end. After that, I think he takes the same path as Jabari Greer and finds a starting job via free agency

Jon Corto-

Looks as though he won the exclusive "Special Teams Guy" abttle with John Wendling. I see him sticking around in that capacity for the next 4-5 years due to his character and involvement in WNY

Andra Davis-

The QB of our new defense. Andra will remain a rock-solid starter for us for the remainder of his career.

Rashaad Duncan-

Does not make the team this year

Chris Ellis-

The buck stops this offseason. Has a slim chance of hanging out for another year in order to see if he can hang as an OLB in the 3-4; based off of his past I'm guessing he will not.

Keith Ellison-

Keith will be kept around based off of his ability to augment our starting linebackers corps on short notice. He will always have a place here in Buffalo, simply because he has a ton of starting experience.

   Dwan Edwards-

Will be a rock-solid starter at DE for the next 4-5 seasons.

Marlon Favorite-

Does not make the team this year

Drayton Florence-

Has earned a starting spot based on merit. Not sure if this lasts through the emergence of McKelvin, but he will always has a job here in Buffalo.

Cary Harris

Does not make the team this year

Nic Harris-

Makes a solid back-up in our new 3-4 defense. This is enoguh to keep him here through his rookei deal, but might not be enough to find him work following that.

Lonnie Harvey

Does not make the team this year

Spencer Johnson-

Will see rotational duties in the infancy of our 3-4. The Bills will eventually pick up a new DE in the draft, making him easy to be replaced. Will always be able to find work in the NFL.

Chris Kelsay

I think the transition to the 3-4 will be hard for this oft-scrutinized guy. I think this could be hos last season with the team. He will ultimately land with another team, likely in the 4-3 DE role.

Ellis Lankster-

Kept around for depth for a couple of years, but is eventually released. Will find it hard to find work following release.

Corey Mace-

Does not make the team this year

Ryan Manalac-

Does not make the team this year

Aaron Maybin-

Will emerge as a great situational OLB in the 3-4, but will always struggle against the run. I see him as a starter, who may flirt with 10 sacks a few times over the next 7-8 seasons. Overall, a very solid long-term fixture in our defense.

John McCargo-

Does not make the team this year

Terrence McGee-

McGee will continue to be an above average CB and will always have a starting job here in Buffalo. Retires a Bill and stays active in WNY.

Leodis McKelvin-

If he remains healthy, emerges as our top CB at the end of this year. Becomes a big target for other teams when his rookie deal expires. The Bills will likely lose him to FA.

Kawika Mitchell-

Remains an above average starter for the remainder of his career, which I firmly believ ends here in Buffalo.

Paul Posluszny-

A career starter in Buffalo. Might flirt with the Pro Bowl a couple of times, but will always rack up a 100 tackles, a couple of sacks and a couple of picks each year. The posterchild for our defense for years to come.

Lydell Sargeant-

Does not make the team this year

Aaron Schobel-

Plays another year in Buffalo. Has no problem transitioning to the 3-4, but opts to retire after next season.

Bryan Scott

Emerges as a starting OLB in our 3-4 (i know...). Remains an above average starter for us for the duration of his career.

Marcus Stroud-

The transition to 3-4 might be too much for his slowing motor. While he will start for a couple of seasons, he will ultimately be replaced by a high draft pick. Will likely find work elsehwhere and defy science by playing until he's 40 (much like Ted Washington)

Donte Whitner-

Above average starter for a couple of years. Will eventually fall out of favor and get released. Will always have a starting job waiting for him in another city

Kyle Williams-

Continues to surprise with his ability to compete due to will power. Starts at nose tackle and never looks back. An above average starter

George Wilson-

Much like Kyle Williams, conitnues to surprise against all odds. Will continue to be a roational starter and provide solid depth. Will always have a place on our roster

Ashton Youboty-

Does not make the team this year. Will find work elsewhere following release, but not for long.

Buffalo Rumblings Five best/worst moves....

Let's face it. With today's signing of Terrell Owens, the Bills have made either the best or worst personnel move since the Levy era. I don't feel there will be any grey area. Obviously, only time will tell.

That being said, with hopes of stimulating a little bit of friendly football debate, I wanted to highlight what I feel are the top 5 best and worst personnel moves since the end of the Levy/Kelly/Smith etc. era. Feel free to critique......

5 Best Moves:

1.) Day One 2007 NFL Draft: I think it's safe to say that the addition of Lynch, Poz and Edwards in 3 consecutive rounds gave the Bills their foundation for the foreseeable future.

2) The Peerless Price Trade: Brilliant! Who knew we would get a first round pic for him! Atlanta looked pretty foolish after the dumped him a few years later.

3) Aquiring Takeo Spikes: Take away his ruptured achilles, he might still be the focal point of our defense. We took advantage of a dumb move on Cinci's part.

4) Signing Jason Peters: Who would guess that an undrafted TE would turn into a perennial Pro Bowler at tackle.

5) Drafting Terrence McGee in the 4th: With all the first day pics we've used to attempt to solidify our defensive backfield, he has turned out to be a great value pic in the 4th. He might never be a superstar, but he's been a solid performer

5 Worst Moves

1) Trading up for John McCargo: His performance over the past few years have solidified my opinion that he should have went no higher than the 5th round. I got extremely excited when I saw the Bills traded up, but that all went away when i realized who it was for. I really figured it would be for Winston Justice, due to the fact many mock drafts had us taking him with our first pic.

2) Drafting Willis Mcgahee: Yes, Travis Henry has spun off the face of the planet, but you could argue that we used a 1st rounder to address arguably the least needed position that year.

3) Trading up for JP Losman: Many teams didn't even consider him a first day pick. I think his performance with us has proven them right

4) Giving Dockery $49 million: no explanation needed

5) Rob Johnson: As if giving a 1st round pic for him weren't enough, we dump Flutie to keep him! Horrible!

Feel free to critique or come up with your own....
