Urban: A's Staking Claim as Contenders
If the current 10-game road swing through Baltimore, Detroit and Boston is, as the Chronicle’s brilliant Scott Ostler suggested, the "Are We For Real?" Tour, the answer --seven games and five victories into the trip -- has to be a resounding yes.

Mychael Urban: On the Clock with the A's
Question 1: Who is the A’s most important player going into 2010?
Urban: Closing the Book on Buck, A's
I’ve gotten an avalanche of e-mails on the topic since my piece on Buck was published Monday, and some legitimate questions were raised. In closing the book on the subject -- at least until/unless it rears its head in Arizona -- I’ll answer three that "pull back the curtain," so to speak.

Mychael Urban: Would adding Sheets unmake A's bed?
You could make an on-paper case for the A’s being the least-impressive team in the American League West right now.
But that doesn’t mean Billy Beane is about to do something silly, and silly is exactly what it would appear to be for Oakland to pay free-agent righty Ben Sheets what he's asking.
Urban: A's lefty Braden finally off injured list
Just got off the phone with A's lefty Dallas Braden, whose breakout 2009 season ended with a bizarre series of medical mishaps; what started with a rash on his left foot turned into an infection, ultimately leading to some sort of "procedure" that left him with what might be permanent nerve damage.
Urban: The Elephant in the Room
Now that Jack Cust is back with the A's, where exactly does that leave Eric Chavez?
Look, if you're expecting Chavvy to be the everyday third baseman this season -- on the heels of a second major back surgery, with a surgically repaired throwing shoulder -- you're even more optimistic than I am. And as anyone who's followed my coverage of the A's over the past decade knows, I'm as glass-half-full as they come in the cynical world of sports journalism.
Urban: Bay Area Hot Stove Special
What are the A's working on? Well, finding a third baseman is certainly a priority right now, as evidenced by Oakland's very real pursuit of Beltre...

Urban: Rajai Davis fans should be nervous by Crisp deal
If the Coco Crisp to Oakland deal goes down as expected Sunday, and you're confused by it, you should know better. Everything the A's have done for the past three years should have confused you. Acquiring Matt Holliday would be one extreme and the Coco Crisp deal would be an example on a lesser scale.
