Here Comes Samardzija

The Chicago Cubs will announce that right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa and will go into the bullpen, replacing right-handed pitcher Jose Ascanio, according to a league source.

Samardzija has been starting at Iowa, and he's done well, adding a more effective slider to his repertoire of a fastball and a split-finger pitch.

The move will be announced before tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ascanio will be optioned back to Iowa.

Miles to the DL

According to ESPN in Chicago, the Cubs are expected to place Aaron Miles on the disabled list Monday with a hyperextended elbow.

The report mentioned the Cubs would recall either Bobby Scales or possibly Sam Fuld to take his place on the active roster. The move is expected to be made official before Monday's game against the Pirates.

Bobby Scales has earned another trip to the big leagues but with Ryan Freel on the roster the right move might be to bring up Sam Fuld.

Fuld has not played in the majors since 2007 but is one of the better defenders in the Cubs' system ... and is on the Cubs 40-man roster.

In 73 games for the Iowa Cubs, Fuld has hit .286/.358/.399 with 16 doubles and eight triples ... not to mention 20-for-25 in the stolen base department.

Glavine: I can still pitch

Tom Glavine says he still believes he can be an effective major league pitcher despite the Atlanta Braves' contention that his rehab was a failure.

Glavine said Friday that "a couple" of teams have expressed interest in him as a pitcher and others have called about consulting or other jobs. He wouldn't name the teams but said "it's going to take a lot" to convince him to pitch for another team.

Glavine, speaking in depth for the first time since he was released by the Braves on Wednesday, said he was incredulous when told by general manager Frank Wren, "You're not good enough to get guys out."

I, actually, would like to see the Cubs take a flyer on him. Maybe put him in the bullpen. His contract is rather small (1 year, 1 million) not that it's an issue. I guess we will just have to see how this plays out.
