For those of you too lazy to click on an external link, the important parts are as follows:

- A reduction of players' hockey-related revenues from 57 per cent to 46 per cent.

- Players would need to wait 10 seasons before becoming unrestricted free agents and that contracts would be limited to a maximum of five years.

- End to salary arbitration and that entry-level contracts would be five years instead of three as they are under the current CBA.

- Eliminate signing bonuses on future contracts and mandate that all future deals have an equal value for every year of the contract."

The lol factor is huge on this one. I wonder if the NHL hired Scott Howson to table some of this ridiculousness. There is going to be one helluva lengthy off-season if the NHL is only looking to budge slightly from this offer.

And since I apparently need at least 75 words to complete a FanPost, I'll insert a short opinion: I'm happy about it. It's short, it's undoubtedly $1m or less, and it gives us another look at a relatively young prospect who at one time was seen as a surefire second line player. I hope Regin has a great offseason recovering from his abundance of shoulder injuries and comes into training camp with a fiery vengeance.

As we get closer to playoffs, it is inevitable that the excessive number of hits he's been taking will only increase. I can imagine the opposition coaches' message being something along the lines of "Hit him HARD every time!! Forget about the puck!! Finish your checks!" While Karlsson is a shifty character, there are some situations where he simply cannot avoid contact. Unfortunately, it's the kind of contact that is realistically unnecessary in a hockey play as it's a good few seconds after the puck has left his stick, but the NHL seems to fully accept it nevertheless. When playoffs come around, we can't have any players taking an extra step at Karlsson, especially if it's even a second late on the play.

This is more or less a comment but I had nowhere else to put it this morning. I want guys like Konopka, Neil, Smith and Cowen to make sure that anyone who takes an extra step at Karlsson learns a valuable lesson. Make it happen mustache man.

He is being recalled to replace an injured Alex Auld.

Lehner, 20, has a record of 4-2-0 through games with the B-Sens this season. Last season, Lehner earned 14 of Binghamton’s 16 post-season wins in goal and was awarded the American Hockey League’s Jack Butterfield Trophy as playoff MVP after helping the B-Sens capture their first Calder Cup. He also registered three playoff shutouts while posting a goals-against average of 2.10 and a .939 save percentage.

A native of Goteborg, Sweden, Lehner made his NHL debut by playing the opening 4:42 of the third period in Montreal on Oct. 16, 2010, making three saves on three shots. He later became the youngest goalie to start a game in Senators franchise history in a Jan. 13 road contest against the New York Islanders, turning aside 20 shots in a 6-4 Ottawa victory to record his first NHL win.

The Senators’ second of two second-round picks (46th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Lehner will join the Senators in advance of their 3 p.m. game today at Madison Square Garden in New York.

I am definitely going to check out at least one day as I'm itching to see some of these new prospects. Anybody else thinking of going? If so, which day looks the most interesting? I think, for me anyways, Thursday seems most feasible from 7-8pm for the scrimmage. As I didn't grow up playing hockey, watching players do drills won't really impress me that much as I have no idea what the expectations are for them, so hopefully it will be a relatively intense scrimmage!

SBP parking

I'm probably not the first genius to think of this idea, but I definitely think that the people of Ottawa would embrace a 5$ increase in the price of every game ticket if it meant free parking at SBP for Sens games. I'm fairly certain that the extra money for the tickets would MORE than cover for the revenue lost from the parking, and the traffic would flow in SO much faster. On top of that, they could even create a few more entrances so that the ride out might be a little quicker too!

Some contributing factors working against this might be:

- No charge parking means too many cars would come, leaving the lots unable to handle such a capacity (thus the increase in traffic would reintroduce the traffic jams)

- Some sort of insurance issue to do with Scotiabank Place (I've never actually read the back of the parking stubs)

- People who take the bus might be like, w-t-f?

We're all aware that the biggest things the Sens fans have going against them is the BRUTAL trek out the Kanata. It's an age-old argument that if the arena were centralized we'd sell out every game and have a much more engaged fanbase. This is just one issue that adds to the ridiculousness of the Kanata Senators... Driving a ways out only to sit in a super congested parking lot for an hour. It sucks!

won his first nhl start since his crazy hip surgery! awesome!!!! he came in to relieve ellis last game and stopped all 9 shots he faced... so he's 39-40 over 1 1/2 games thus far. good for him!! hopefully he can regain some swag and become the goalie he always might have been (i know i'm talking realllly soon for that) and people will continue to say yay emery! instead of yayo, emery?

Frank the Tank

So I've been seeing a handful of comments here and there about the purpose of having Francis Lessard on the bench or on the roster. I would like to briefly and concisely state my opinion on his role as well as the roles of other brute enforcers in the league. It's no secret that Frank is not the most skilled hockey player out there -- in fact he looks leagues removed from being an impactful player in almost any facet in the NHL. His job, pure and simple, is to "enforce". He's an enforcer. What does an enforcer do? He makes sure people don't take liberties with the light guys on your team. Now I've seen it justified that since he doesn't play with the softies (i.e. Spezza), how can he protect them? I'll tell you -- with his threatening presence. You say: "well any player can just decline a fight"... I say, "can any player decline an intentional hit to the head or intentional boarding?"... in most cases, no. Frank is the type of player, one of many in the league, who are basically given a 750k salary with the expectation to do something stupid in retaliation and get suspended in the process... making it more like 500k. BUT! If they weren't willing to act like idiots, they'd be getting 75k in the minors... Look at Trevor Gillies on the Islanders. Now I know he's not retaliating, but what is his purpose, really? Two back to back 10 game suspensions for intentional boarding. When he comes back and he's on the ice, don't you think that every single damned person on the opposing bench is going to be thinking "Jesus Christ there's that dickhead who's been wrecklessly ruining people's careers... don't piss him off"? I'm not saying it's a good thing one way or the other, but this is their role, such as it is, and it seems to be very important for every team to have at least one.

Afterthought -- Also, Chris Neil does NOT fit that mold as he is relied upon much more for actually playing hockey as well. He throws big hits, screens the goalie well, works well along the boards, decent on the forecheck... He's a true grinder/fighter, not just a goon. I should not even have to mention Carkner's worth (I hope not anyways, as I'm a huge fan of Big Country) in defending him from pure goon-ism as well.

With our depleted lineup and our pillaging of Bingo's team, will Murray pick up Rob Schremp off the waiver wire? He's a 24 year old centre, his contract is cheap (780k) and expires at the end of this year, and he has 10-12-22 in 44 games this season. I was under the impression he was playing fairly well for a waiver pickup, although he is a -17 (albeit on the Islanders)... and.. well... was waived by the Islanders. I realize we're trying to give the Bingo boys a chance but is there much downside to this? Will Murray grab him?

Beauchemin for a first round defense prospect Jake Gardiner and Joffrey Lupul. I think this was a fantastic trade for the Leafs and may set the bar for a guy like Phillips(ie, in cap hit, slightly more physical, a little less offensive, but overall similar). Gardiner appears to be a fantastic offensive prospect with loads of talent and potential and was 17th overall in 2008. Won gold with Sweden in World Jrs in 2010. Has 30 pts in 30 games (albeit in NCAA). Joffrey Lupul is a gamble based on his crazy year + of injuries/blood infection, but if healthy he also has loads of talent and never really had a chance to peak in terms of production. At just over 4m/year and 2 more years on his contract, he has the opportunity to make his money well worth it if he can round back into form by the end of the summer (or possibly by the end of this season).

Does this set the precedent for the value of Phillips and other potential deadline offloads? Does Phillips' value increase above what we previously thought based on this precedent?

Anybody else seen the TV show Supernatural? Whenever they start talking about him as Winchester during game stoppages I always think of Sam and Dean.

I read in one of the posts about how Winnie is such a ... i don't know... non-menacing nickname? Is there something else we can come up with? His name is a type of rifle, his TV kin fight demons and shit, he's a place in New Hampshire, King Henry the III was Henry of Winchester.. all stupid irrelevant facts... and guns are clearly the coolest of all of these facts. And then there's Jesse. It's a cool name. Lots of cool people out there with that name. Jesse James (the cowboy not the douchebag that rides motorcycles).

I'm not in a creative mood so I have no suggestions at this time. Anyone else?

No love for Carkner?

So over all of the recent talk of defensive pairings and defensive struggles (Kings game included... 2 recalled goals), Carkner has quietly been incredibly successful on the defensive end and has not been alotted ice time appropriately. In some HF board threads reading about the future of the Sens defensive core, some people even have Carkner sitting in the 7th d man behind Gonchar, Philips, Karlsson, Kuba, Cowen, Rundblad/Campoli(re-sign pending). In a season where the Sens are an unhealthy -15 in goal differentials, Carkner is a VERY healthy +4 with 18 or so minutes of ice time per game. Keep in mind as well that he plays a fair bit of time ok the PK and absolutely none on the PP. I have yet to see a glaring mistake from Carkner (a few penalties here and there notwithstanding). He has been incredibly steady, even sneakily saving goals (see Kings game) in a timely fashion. I know how much you guys love stats, so let's look back to our incredibly brutal 3 game slide wherein we were outscored 17-4. Carkner was +1 out of those 3 games. Last year same deal.. Sens finished -13 on the season, Carkner was at an even 0. My question thus becomes : Why is Philips still getting #2 minutes and being humiliated on a fairly regular basis while Carkner is staying in the shadows? One could argue that Philips is facing top lines and Carkner is not, but TRY HIM OUT. I would love to see Carkner get 25 minutes per game and see if he can keep up the good work. Is it conditioning? If so, still pair him against the top lines for 18 minutes and let Philips give it a try for 7 minutes. Maybe Philips could find some confidence owning 2-4 lines and regain his 2005-2008 form.

Thoughts?
