#Cal has hired Wes Chandler as its new WR coach, according to a well-placed source. Big get for the Bears.

This was the All Pro WR for the Chargers back with Dan Fouts...has coached in NFL for Dallas, Cleveland etc.

EDIT by Ohio Bear:
Most recently, Chandler was on the faculty of Football University. See his bio there

In addition to his NFL assistant coaching experience and his experience working with receivers at FBU, Chandler was a head coach in NFL Europe and an offensive coordinator in the UFL.

Joining a star-studded group of recruits, including already-committed receiver and friend Bryce Treggs, Powe arrived on campus yesterday with Treggs and fellow receiver Christ Harper, who he travelled up from Southern California with. And soon after arriving, Powe was ready to go public with the decision he'd made earlier this week to commit to Cal.

"I love the education and how it's all like a big family at Cal," said Powe. "And I like and trust the coaches and feel comfortable with them and the program. Having guys like Bryce and Todd (Cal defensiive end and former Lakewood teammate Todd Barr) there makes it that much better."

Fresno State starting safety Phillip Thomas out 8-12 weeks to season after breaking his leg last night at practice.

Bulldog fans say Thomas is probably their best defensive player.

ATH Kenneth Walker (Richmond, Calif./Kennedy) committed to his longtime leader and will play receiver for California.

Walker nearly committed to Cal at The Opening last July but wanted to wait until he took the ACT first. The Bears have been a heavy leader for the last year and it always seemed like just a matter of time before Walker pulled the trigger.

"I really liked everything about Cal," Walker said. "I like the offense a lot, it's receiver friendly and you can make a lot of plays there. I like the coaches a lot and especially Coach [Jeff] Tedford. The depth chart is great and Cal really needs receivers right now.

It looks as though freshman running back Brendan Bigelow likely will redshirt. Cal doesn’t have to make that decision now, and there’s always the possibility he could come on early in the season as he continues to adjust. But it looks as though the rust of not playing last season was too much to overcome for Bigelow. He’s still getting used to playing on his twice-torn up knee and isn’t ready yet, although Tedford said Bigelow is getting better every day.

UPDATE: Avinash here. Here's some further details and analysis via SBN Bay Area.

The roller-coaster career of quarterback Kevin Riley took another dip when he was among three players released by the B.C. Lions before the start of training camp Sunday.

One of three QBs who began rookie camp last Thursday, Riley joined first-year receivers Carl Sims of Western Illinois and Chris McClover of Middle Tennessee in the CFL team's first round of deletions.

Wednesday, according to multiple sources inside and outside the university, the final decision of the NCAA's Infractions Appeals Committee was in hand and being reviewed by USC before its Thursday release by the NCAA.

And it's not good news for USC football.

Despite speculation and media reports that there might be a willingness on the part of the NCAA to listen favorably to a USC appeal that had asked that the 30 scholarships lost over three years with a maximum of 75 allowed and a two-year postseason bowl ban be cut in half, USCFootball.com's sources indicate that USC's appeal has been denied completely.

The Pacific-10 Conference will start its own network on cable television in 2012 but will also sell most of its marquee football and basketball games to Fox and ESPN for about $3 billion over 12 years, more than quadrupling what the two companies have been paying.

It is the richest conference deal ever. The Pac-10, which is expected to announce the agreements Wednesday, is following the media model of the Big Ten Conference, which in 2007 created its own network and negotiated a 10-year, $1 billion deal with ESPN.

But a critical difference between the conferences’ deals is that the Pac-10 will retain full ownership of its network.

Per Okanes:

And now, a training session for aspiring amateur detectives, brought to you by Cal football.

The Bears wrapped up spring practice Saturday with a controlled scrimmage at Contra Costa College, and coach Jeff Tedford said afterward that an announcement regarding the quarterback competition is coming soon.

In the scrimmage, junior Zach Maynard took every first-team rep. Tedford also spent the spring praising Maynard's performance and potential.

Not exactly a tough case to crack.

According to an unnamed source with access to the entire practice, Zach Maynard took the bulk of the snaps on Tuesday, followed by Brock Mansion, then Allan Bridgford.

BERKELEY, Calif. -- California coach Jeff Tedford hears the negative chatter but he's trying not to listen. The operative word there being "trying." He understands why some Golden Bears fans are grumbling, but such talk nonetheless frustrates him.

Tedford rebuilt a lousy program and created a high standard to which Cal fans happily became accustomed. Yet over the past few seasons, he has not consistently met that high standard.

"All of a sudden, you have an eight-win season and it's not good enough," Tedford said. "Then, all of the sudden, you have a [losing season] and it's, 'Wow, what happened here?'"

University of Miami officials spent Sunday interviewing the top candidates for their vacant athletic director job, officials close to the search said.

The candidates who spoke with UM include two current athletic directors: Virginia Commonwealth’s Norwood Teague and California’s Sandy Barbour.

Whoever wins the job will have one less speedy receiver. Tevin Carter, a redshirt freshman from Los Angeles, has quit the team. Carter didn't ask for a release so he could transfer.

"He's finished here, which is unfortunate," Tedford said. "I don't know if he had a passion to play football anymore... he doesn't know if he wants to play football."
