Hendry: A damning yet fairly honest overview.
When you look at his tenure this way, it really makes you wonder how he's survived. Definitely his final year.
Stark Gives Castro Some Love
Our guy is the starting SS on Starks All-Underrated team. He has some good things to say, and only really worries about his day-to-day focus. Thinks he's going to be a star. Nice.
Slightly OT: Pujols Sets Deadline
This gives the Cardinals a little over a month to get a deal done. A deal that may cost them anywhere from $25 to $30 million a year. Can they afford it? Can they afford not to?
Garza to Cubs Getting Close?
I cringe at what we might be giving up. I like his makeup, but worry that one of Archer/Cashner/McNutt are in the deal...
James Loney?
If this has been posted elsewhere, I apologize. Couldn't find it. Better option than Laroche, IMO.
Uribe for 3/21? Dodgers Have Lost It
Wow, Ned Colletti continues to show absolutely no regard for the bottom line. I know Uribe had a great year and was a big part of the Giants World Series victory, but a 3 year deal at his age? Ridiculous.
Will The Stat Nerds Finally Have Their Say?
I know Al will post his and Mike's SBN Picks for AJ Cy Young in a little while, but I thought I'd post what the ESPN stat heads have to say about one of the most intriguing votes ever.
We all know there's way more to a starting pitchers value than just wins, but is it enough for King Felix? They seem to think he's a lock. What about you?
Hamilton's Dry Celebration
In this case, his Canada Dry celebration! After reading his book, and finding out all that he's overcome, it's great to see his teammates respect that. Love that about baseball.
That Conflicted Feeling
In amongst this story on deadline deals by Jerry Crasnick, he mentions how good Kerry Wood has been for the Yankers. He's given up just 1 run in 23 innings, with 26 K's.
As much as I despise the Yankees (almost on par with the Cards and White Sox) it would be nice to see Woody get a ring. Am I insane?
Why are the Cubs 7 games under .500?
Two words to answer this question: Pittsburgh Pirates.
Humor me here for a second. The Cubs have played the Pirates nine times so far this year, with just 2 wins to show for it. If you take out those 9 games altogether, they would have a record of 29-31, just a couple games under .500.
Now take that a step further, and reverse the record against the Pirates, who the boys have beaten up on during the Lou Piniella regime, and you have a record of 36-33, which would put them just 2 games in back of the Cardinals, and a half game behind the Reds.
Some more perspective on how much those Pirate losses have hurt, Pittsburgh has a record of 18-42 against the rest of baseball this year. Wow.
Am I over simplifying? Totally. But one of the things that seperates the good teams from the bad is their ability to beat up on weaker opponents.
The Cubs still have 6 games left against Pittsburgh. Better win them all :)

Brenly Slams Cubs
Bad fundamentals - Bob pretty much nails it. I will say that guys like Ramirez and Lee have been at or above average defenders and baserunners. However, it's pretty fair to say that as a team, this has been a troubling area to say the least, even the team that won 97 games had its issues.
Hendry Gives Vote of Confidence
About 4 months ago, my boss gave me and three of my co-workers a similar vote of confidence. Well, about a week later our boss was fired, then two weeks after that, my three cohorts were let go.
Top 5 Least Tradable!
Sori's #1! And we have two in the honorable mention list. Yay!
Love the comment Stark makes about Carlos Lee having a lower OPS than 13 pitchers with at least 10 AB's.
Enjoy!
Another Soriano Health Take
The positives I take from this Gene W. article are that Soriano is working hard, has a good attitude, and is embarrassed of his past few seasons. I think Gene is pretty fair in his assessment of the situation, and all we can hope is that Jaramillo can work some kind of voodoo magic on the guy, and that he can stay remotely healthy.
Hart beats Brewers in Arb.
With his pedestrian numbers, and after only playing 115 games, I can't believe he won the case. What a joke. The Brewers were offering almost a million dollar raise, but the panel gave him $1.5M. No wonder teams try to settle.
Cubs interested in Calero?
Assuming the guy is healthy, and past his shoulder issues from last year, I think he would be a good addition to the pen, as he can set up Marmol, along with Grabow.
Beltre Signs with BoSox
Now the Red Sox are trying to find a home for Lowell, and one rumour has them dealing with the Mets for Castillo, then flipping Castillo to another team. Lowell would play 1st base for New York. Lowell should be fine by ST after the surgery on his thumb.
The Milton-Burrell Show
The long talked about, all-show-no-go deal is mentioned a little ways down in this piece. Didn't know about the $3 donation to dump his salary...where do I send my money!!!
Saito Signs with Braves
I know the Cubs were interested in this guy. Gotta hand it to Frank Wren and the Braves, who saw a need in their bullpen, and nailed it down with Wagner and Saito even before the Winter Meetings!
Castillo Rumor Won't Go Away
This article by Sullivan just went up a few hours ago. I'm not thrilled with Castillo, but he fills a hole at 2nd and adds some speed at the top.
Really, just getting rid of Bradley would make this deal successful.
Bradley Deal Shot Down
Steve Stone strikes again...apparently the man everyone loves to hate started the Bradley rumor.
Marmol Bails on WBC
Wow. This news is fantastic! Best thing to come out of Cubs camp is that Carlos has decided that the closer battle in camp with Kevin Gregg is more important. Found it at the bottom of this piece in the Trib, about Z acting like a spoiled child.
I can only imagine the thrill it would be to represent ones country internationally, but more and more players are, and I think for good reason, bowing out of this exhibition tournament.
Carlos himself said "It's hard to say no to your country". Well, with the way he was borderline abused by Lou last year, and the important role he has in this team's success, I'm really glad he did.
Side note: This Zambrano behavior is really getting tired. I get that having the media around all the time would be annoying to say the least, but to me it's part of a players job to answer questions. Anyway, I digress...
Dempster, the WBC, and Loyalty
This story about Dempster passing on the WBC just came out north of the border.
As a Cub fan, I'm really glad that both Demp and Rich Harden are not taking part. Rich because of the cranky shoulder, Ryan because of the big $$ the Cubs just spent on him.
As a Canadian, it would be nice to see our best out there against countries like the US, Dominican and Japan, which are obviously superior to Canada in talent. However, my desire for a Cubs World Series wins out over an exhibition tournament with no meaningful implications.
Here's a quote from Dempster about his previous decision to pass on the last WBC while recovering from Tommy John:
"I love where I'm from and I love the opportunity my country has provided me with, but at the same time I had to do the right thing for our team."
The reason I've linked to this article is because of the comments at the bottom of the story. It's embarrassing, to be honest, the response of some people to Dempster's decision. They think him not donning the Canadian Jersey essentially translates to him spitting on the flag.
Get real, people.
Go Cubs, Go Canada...in that order!
Sometimes you just gotta laugh
Reading espn.com I found this funny page about the Cubs.
I know we're all tired of the curse crap, and realize it had nothing to do with the total embarrassment that was the 2008 playoffs.
However, if we don't laugh at some of this stuff, I think we'll either go completely insane or just jump off the nearest bridge.
I know it's cliche, but I believe that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Well, it's time to beef up a little more!!!
If you're not ready to laugh yet, I apologize for pointing this page out.
How many wins will it take?
As Al mentioned in his game recap, there are a mere 61 games left on the schedule. Hard to believe. It breaks down like this:
32 at Wrigley - 6 against St. Louis, 3 against Milwaukee
29 on the dreaded road - 3 against St. Louis, 7 against Milwaukee
So, my question for my fellow nail-biting, stressed out Cub fanatics: How many wins will it take to win the division? My call is 37 makes it a no-brainer, while 32 makes it a dog fight.
Your thoughts?
Thanks!
