I'm a female hockeyphile, and a Washington Capitals fan since the days of the "Save the Caps" campaign.
(Also a New York Yankees fan due to genetics.)

Go, Sharks.
The summer of 2010 started earlier than most any of us had anticipated, with a loss in the first round of the playoffs. Yet in that too-soon summer of a year ago, there were scraps of hope to cling to: Reminders of the early-round losses of previous Stanley Cup winners. Determined quotes from Capitals players. After a few weeks, even a curse was something we acknowledged we would look forward to.
Playoff Viewing Parties
Official Caps Viewing Parties for the games at MSG:
Game 3 (Sun., April 17): Hard Times in Clarendon – 3028 North Wilson Blvd, Arlington, Va. A rally will begin at 1 p.m. in front of Hard Times and last until puck-drop at 3 p.m.
Game 4 (Wed., April 20): Union Jack’s in the Ballston Common Mall, 671 North Glebe Road, Arlington, Va.
Anyone planning to attend, or should we plan parties of our own? Both events are in Virginia, does someone want to suggest a DC or Maryland location instead?

Great ad. Terrible night.
Watch Blog Commenters Take the Ice (Pick-Up Games)
Two upcoming games; two groups of Rink readers playing pick-up hockey; two opportunities to hang out with folks you mostly only know by screen name.
The Japers' Rink "Winter Holidays" Classic Pick-Up Game
Saturday, Dec. 18, 2:00pm
(The Caps play in Boston at 7:00pm, so there's a chance to keep the party going afterward.)
The Japers' Rink "Pre-Winter Classic" Classic Pick-Up Game
Thursday, Dec. 30, 7:45pm
(There's no Caps game, and it's New Year's Eve-eve, so you can devote all your rooting energy to chirping the amateurs.)
What do you say? If enough people are interested in watching the Caps together on 12/18, I'll see about making a reservation at one of the bars in the mall (please specify your favorites in the comments).
Rink Pick-Up Game and Blog Party
So, with the possibility of a Japers' Rink pickup game some time in December (or maybe January), we're wondering whether we can make a whole blog party out of it.
Would you be interested in coming to watch your internet friends play hockey after we all watch the professionals do it? Would you be able to devote a few hours to a blog party if the pickup game was at Kettler and we watched the Caps game at one of the bars in the mall underneath? (Rabbits, would you want to get together and put in another order for shirts?)
Caps away games over the next few weeks:
Wed., Dec. 1 8pm at St. Louis
Thurs., Dec. 2 8:30pm at Dallas
Sun., Dec. 12 7pm at New York
Sat., Dec. 18 7pm at Boston
Sun., Dec. 19 7:30pm at Ottawa
Sun., Dec. 26 7pm at Carolina
Sat., Jan. 1 1pm at Pittsburgh
(I'm guessing we don't want to mess with that last one for obvious reasons)
Official Playoff Game Watch Parties (DC area)
Fans will have a chance to win game tickets and other premium Caps giveaways at official viewing parties.
Game 1 (Thursday, April 15): RFD – 807 7th Street
Game 2 (Saturday, April 17): Iron Horse Tavern – 507 6th Street
Game 3 (Monday, April 19): Hard Times in Clarendon – 3028 North Wilson Blvd, Arlington, Va.
Game 4 (Wednesday, April 21): Union Jack’s in the Ballston Common Mall, 671 North Glebe Road, Arlington, Va.
Rink Meetup and Game, Saturday, Jan. 2 (reservation acquired)
We've been talking for a while about having a meetup-slash-pickup game, and thanks mostly to the careful machinations of Fehr and Balanced, it happens this coming Saturday, January 2. In the interest of keeping things organized, I'd like to get a sense of who's coming for the meetup part of the evening.
UPDATE: I'm in contact with Bailey's and finalizing the details. We have a reservation for 20 and should have a back room of our own. (It's probably not going to be a very busy afternoon there anyway.)
Read on for details, and please RSVP in the poll.
He’s Not Just Good, He’s Just Right
Why Semyon Varlamov Perfectly Fits This Caps Team
The study of organizational culture is sort of a hobby of mine. It occurred to me, after thinking about Saturday’s Game 1 against the Penguins, that Semyon Varlamov isn’t merely a talented goalie to save this post-season for the Washington Capitals — the way he’s playing makes him the perfect fit for this Caps team at this time. The clues are all in the spectacular save he made on Sidney Crosby, which was a perfect summation of his style and the team’s as a whole.
Varlamov is young, but he has other strengths to make up for a lack of experience.
-
He makes big, bold moves:
Varlamov (over)committed to Chris Kunitz, who he admits he thought was going to shoot. -
Bold moves entail an element of risk:
Kunitz passed to Crosby, and Varlamov found himself out of position with an empty net behind him. -
Overcoming risk requires focus:
Varlamov saw the pass and stayed with the puck, even as it went to his other side. -
Fortunately, being young also can mean being quick, and being naturally talented also can mean being sufficiently quick that you can correct your mistakes:
Varlamov reached back with his stick and put it in exactly the right place — a creative move when blockers and butterflys are the preference.
OK, so that was one stunning save, why does it mean Varlamov is such a good match for this team? Well, we’ve seen Bruce Boudreau’s system in action, and it’s a system that favors players who are bold, quick, and focused. It can lead to risky plays that go badly for the Caps, and it depends on the fact that those risky plays are made by enthusiastic, focused natural talents who need a little room to show off their creativity in order to tip the balance their way. Everything Boudreau’s system asks of the skaters is what Varlamov delivers in the crease.
Winning isn’t always just a matter of finding good players for each position on the list. It can sometimes depend on putting together a team of players who share an approach, not merely an aim.
