(20 Years of Jerry!!! Report Card) Feb 25th 1989
Please, "DMN" Don't steal my article please come up with your own original idea.
Well it's officially been 2O years (Feb 25th, 1989) since the Oil Tycoon from Arkansas purchased America's team and fired America's coach. I took a look out how he's done as owner in those 20 years, breaking it up into three areas. First, most importantly winning. Second the Draft. Lastly, how he's grown the franchise as far as income and building for the future.
"WINNING"
OVERALL RECORD:
170-150
MADE PLAYOFFS:
11 out of 20 Years
PLAYOFF RECORD:
12-8
SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONSHIPS:
3
GRADE B
If you just landed from Mars you'd probably look at this and question the grade. Why not a better grade you say? The overall winning was front-loaded in the first ten years. There was great potential to do more but Jerry's head got too big and he let his ego get in the way. Jerry has shown he will work hard and do what takes to but sometimes get in his own way. Jerry needs to learn to share the spotlight or let others get the praise. He still doesn't understand that everyone will benefit from it.
"THE DRAFT"
2008 Mike Jenkins, DB South Florida
2007 Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue
2006 Bobby Carpenter, LB, Ohio St.
2005 Demarcus Ware, DE, Troy
2004 Julius Jones, RB, Notre Dame
2003 Terence Newman, CB, Kansas St.
2002 Roy Williams, S, Oklahoma
2001 Quincy Carter, QB, Georgia
2000 Dwayne Goodrich, CB, Tenn.
1999 Ebenezer Ekuban, DE, UNC
1998 Greg Ellis, DE, UNC
1997 David LaFleur, TE, LSU
1996 Kavika Pittman, DE, McNeese St.
1995 Sherman Williams, RB, Alabama
1994 Shante Carver, DE, Arizona St.
1993 Kevin Williams, WR, Miami
1992 Kevin Smith, CB, Texas A&M
1991 Russell Maryland, DT, Miami
1990 Emmitt Smith, RB, Florida
1989 Troy Aikman, QB, UCLA
Grade B-
I'm basing this grade upon drafts as a "whole" not just the first round picks/first pick in the draft that are listed above. I still cringe every time I see Quincy Carter's name. I'll still never forget how excited Jerry was after he drafted him. He had a smile on his face that said, I just pulled the wool over everyone's eyes. Silly man. It would take too long to break down each draft but if you broke down the years that Jerry had a "tutor" Jimmy, Bill or Jeff you can clearly see a difference in the years where he was the sole shot caller. Regardless, he still got 2 HOF'ers with the first round picks alone and (maybe a 3rd with D Ware). His only big knock is he tends to get a little to cute with the trading up and down rather than just picking a position of need. Sometimes you are going to swing and miss so I guess he gets a pass on greats such as Q Dog, Sherman Williams, LaFleur and Goodrich. Again, Jerry should just trust his talent evaluators to do their jobs and realize after all these years this his not his area of strength Jerry's only jobs in the War Rom should be to say yes or no, look pretty and make the phone call to the Draftee.
"The Franchise"
Grade A-
Jerry has always treated this team as a business. He's spared no expense when it comes to growing and expanding the business. He's helped put the
team even further into the national spotlight. Although this sounds great
it's not without it's pitfalls. More media attention means more pressure
on the players. That's fine for some but as we can see with the current roster of Cowboys....it's not helping. Whether it be a high priced free
agent or a new stadium the Oil Tycoon has dug deep without hesitation.
The man really does want to win, whether he does it for the loyal, passionate die-hard fans (yours truly) or just to feed his own ego is your call. Spending money has never been the problem. The problem is he made "America's team" the "America's Joke" National Pepsi commercials, Pre Season games in Mexico, HBO Training Camp Specials and instilled a culture of bad behavior. I guess he's never heard the expression "lead by example".
When it comes to revenue, Jerry is King.
Buying this franchise for a messily $150 million and turning into $1.6 Billion 20 years later is no small feat. I don't agree with everything
he's done like owning the licensing on all Cowboy merchandise and price
Gauging on ticket prices at the new stadium just to name a couple.
Bottom line is this man knows business and knows how to make a buck.
To bad he didn't know as much about football.
Jerry's like a "Hot Stripper Girlfriend." Awesome to look at, sex, however, whenever and wherever you want it. Not afraid of upgrading their best "assets." Sounds perfect, right? The problem is they love the spotlight
and love to flirt with your friends, they try to make business decisions in department's their just not qualified for. Worst of all they don't realize when their old and it time to to get off the pole because even plastic surgery won't help wrinkles lines and sagging ass.
"Suggestions"
Jerry should be happy with his body work but it's time for him to
take a step back and admit it's time to hire a GM. Let his son Steven
Start calling the shots and just enjoy his Golden years. If he really
Cares about this franchise, he will brush the giant ego aside and make
the changes needed. Hasn't he learned anything from Al Davis?

Safety First! (A Must Read for Jerry)
Remember that guy we had so many years ago, who now is an analyst on that network (that loves to make up silly headlines about us). Yeah he was one.
Remember Cliff Harris, yeah he was one. Charlie Waters, yeah him too.
Oh yeah, let's not forget the guy who won SB 28 for us, James Washington.
What's happened since Woody? We thought we had one, used the eighth pick in the 2002 draft on him, this fraud even had a rule named after him, wow he must be good! Somewhere along the way he got dumped by Kelly Rowland forgot how to tackle, forgot how to cover and found God. After him just a bunch of temporary patches, Keith Davis, Patrick Watkins etc.. Kind of a coincidence that Roy had his best seasons while Woody was still on the field. Why have we neglected the most important position on the field for so long. Don't believe me, Look at the the final four teams in the Championship Games. Troy Palumolu, Brian Dawkins, Ed Reed and Adrian Wilson...Heard of em.
Want to win another Super Bowl? Forget all our other problems, find
a Safety. I took a look at the last 20 Super Bowl winners to see
how they fared at the safety spot. You ready?
89 SF- Ronnie Lott
90 SF-Ronnie Lott
91 NY-Dave Duerson (Yeah that one from the '85 Bears)
92 WAS- Todd Bowles
93-DAL- Woody
94-DAL-Woody
95 SF Tim McDonald
96 DAL-Woody
97 GB-Eugene Robinson
98 DEN-Steve Atwater
99 DEN-Steve Atwater
00 STL-Rich Coady
01 BAL-Kim Herring
02 NE- Lawyer Milloy
03 TB John Lynch
04 NE Rodney Harrison
05 NE Rodney Harrison
06 PIT Troy Palumolu
07 IND- Bob Sanders
08 NYG-Gibril Wilson
09 Palumolo or Adrian Wilson?
What does this means? It means out of the last 20 SB winners 17 had
a great safety. That's right I said 17 out of 20! Want to know how to
pave your way through the playoffs, look no further. Safety first!

Captain says "Salvation will set you free"
Go to the store today and put some change in the Red salvation army container. A lot of it! Lucky for me I had a hunch that this team would not complete their mission. I was hoping to be wrong, so much so I started a reverse psychology bit. It worked last week but unfortunately some of the so called" top 10 reasons" actually held true. I didn't want to set myself up to get let down yet again. It's hard to take year after year. This team has not given us a playoff win since '96 and don't know if there is one is on the horizon anytime soon. The talent is there but, this collective boat of players doesn't have the heart or smarts to make any noise in the playoffs let alone get there. Jerry needs to do some soul searching and decide if wants to continue running the Cowboys or hire someone to do it for him. Wade needs to go and somebody who is going to make these players responsible for their bone-headed play needs to coaching this team. It's going to be a long off season. Now with NO first round draft pick, there is not that much to get excited about. All I have to say is I want Coach Cowher. Do I still want to make the playoffs? off course! But we sure as hell don't deserve too. And, what if we do? Do you really want to see that outcome? I'm no chemistry major and I don't know the reason why this team doesn't perform but I do know there needs to be a lot of change.

Captain's Top 10 reasons why we won't beat the Ravens
Consider this my Holiday Gift to you all. We can not and will not win. Don’t let yourself be let down yet again this year. You heard it hear first. We will lose. So score some points with your wife instead and go to that stupid holiday party (like me) or go do some last minute shopping and help the economy. No reason to go out to sports bar to watch you will only be disappointed. I will be on the blog Sunday morning to console whom ever might need it.
1. "The Dorthy Syndrome" I swear after the game I heard "You’re out of the woods, you’re of out of the dark, you’re out of the night" blasting from the speakers from Texas Stadium. This team is far too complacent just to have avenged their loss from last year.
2. Cory Procter, enough said.
3. INT’s Ravens lead the league in INT’s (22). Romo will need to be careful against a blitzing D.
4. Injuries. Too many dings and dents to overcome.
5. Special Teams. Our special teams are truly special.
6. Teams that get shafted the previous week always come back and throttle their next opponent. Look at what the Chargers did to the Jets this year.
7. As always penalties. We commit to many and they kill us.
8. The Ravens defense is at the top of the league in yards allowed in both rushing and passing. With a dinged up running game we will be forced to throw again, which isn’t good for a team that’s struggled to move the ball downfield.
9. Last game at Texas Stadium. Significance of game will be overshadowed by the "Farewell to Texas Stadium" theme. Players will not be as focused as they should.
10. This last reason is the best. The Cowboys have never beat the Ravens at home :)
