A's fan for as long as I can remember. I dressed as Billy Martin for Halloween in 1982 and went to my first game in 1984. My family has had season tickets since 1987 and I grew-up during the dynasty years of the late '80's/early 90's.

I lived through the agony of the '88 and '90 World Series; cried after Gibson's homer, mostly on account of Eckersley walking the previous batter, Mike Davis, on 4 pitches. In my memory, Eckersley had walked less than 10 batters the entire year and Davis was hitting around .200 for the season. I attended all 4 games of the Bay Bridge Series and have appreciated the fact that I can forever lord that sweep over all Giants fans.

My father's business had season tickets for the Giants and those tickets were always in high demand amongst his clients. For the life of me, I could never understand why anybody would support a losing organization like the Giants when they could easily support a winner that was housed 10 miles away.

If anyone was at the game or can ID the guy () who got the ball, perhaps shame would motivate him to change his tune.

His cost/benefit analysis is waaaay off. Last I checked, $1 is still infinitely greater than $0. Good luck selling Matt Carson's 1st HR ball on eBay. I'm sure Marc Ecko will win the bid.

A's propensity for scoring in the 9th Inning

Does anyone know if there's a site that shows team scoring by inning? I'm wondering what % of the A's runs come in the 9th and how that ranks against the rest of league. Additionally, are the A's most likely to score a run in the 9th versus any other inning? It seems like the A's score a fair amount of runs in the 9th inning. While these haven't translated to victories in most cases, these guys seem to play differently in the 9th than in any other inning; they seem more focused.

How bad? A's (Current and Former) Batting Averages by year

In 5 of the past 6 seasons, the A's have laid claim to the player ranked worst or second to worst in Batting Average amongst qualifying players.

  • 2009 - Giambi = last
  • 2008 - Hannahan = last.  An absolute horror show of ineptitude, the A's claimed 4 of the bottom 5 hitters (5 of 5 if you count Swisher with the White Sox).
  • 2007 - A banner year!  We had nobody ranked in the bottom 10
  • 2006 - Chavez = second to last
  • 2005 - Swisher = last
  • 2004 - Crosby = second to last

The case for tanking it

I'd like to see the A's go one of two ways in the second half: 1. Play hard, respectable, fundamentally sound baseball that ends with a record at or over .500; 2. Continue to play horrible baseball, pile up more losses, and provide more evidence to fire Geren. It's the reverse scenario of "Major League."

What would it actually take to fire Geren?

Leaving aside the current and past decisions by Geren - ie. pulling Giambi and Nomar early in Sat's game with the A's well behind and then discovering that he really could've used them in the 8th and 9th of the 11-9 loss - what events do you think would have to transpire in the future in order for him to get his walking papers?

I would think that 2 last place finishes in 3 years...though finishing 1 game out of last in 2006 should approximate to 3 last place finishes...would represent cause enough. However, I think the team's performance in the 2nd half will determine Geren's future. If the A's show improvement, even if they finish in last, he stays; if they continue to play abysmal defense and demonstrate complete offensive ineptitude while Geren sticks to positive platidudes, he goes.

Barton at 3rd?

Did the A's ever consider Daric Barton as a 3rd base candidate? I know that he came up as a catcher before transitioning to 1st base. Given this lost season, the presence of Carter and Dolittle (though he's listed as an outfielder), would it make sense to move Barton to the hot corner and prep him for next year?

Harden out of WBC with shoulder injury

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/worldclassic2009/news/story?id=3849357

For the second straight time, injuries will keep Rich Harden from pitching for Canada in the World Baseball Classic.

The Chicago Cubs right-hander, who was listed on Canada's provisional 45-man roster, pulled himself out of consideration as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

"I missed the last [2006] WBC too, because i was coming off surgery, and that just killed me to be in the stands watching ... and this time it will be just as difficult to watch," Harden said, according to the Calgary Herald.

Harden said he has just started a throwing program and March is too soon for him to pitch in games.

The 27-year-old pitcher, who has battled injuries throughout his six-season career, was 10-2 last season in 25 starts for the Oakland Athletics and Cubs with a sparkling 2.07 ERA.

Assessing Swisher for Sweeney/Gonzalez/FDLS

The performance of Nick Swisher with Chicago and his sequence of transactions (A's/Sox/Yankees) seems reminiscent of A.J. Pierzynski's time with San Francisco (Twins/Giants/Sox).

I argue that the Pierzynski for Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano, and Boof Bonzer is one of the worst trades in MLB history...it certainly looked more certain before Liriano's arm troubles.  Pierzynski's poor showing in SF combined with what the Giants gave up - eventual #1 and #3 starters and a premier closer - could possibly mirror Chicago's experience with Nick Swisher - receing a year's worth of service and eventual relegation to the bench in exchange for #1 and #3 starters and a premiere outfielder (obviously I'm forecasting here).

Poll
Projecting out, how would your rank the A's trade with the Sox (Swisher for Sweeney/Gonzalez/FDLS) in comparison to the Giants trade with the Twins (Nathan/Liriano/Bonzer for Pierzynski)?
A's got a better deal than the Twins
17 votes
A's got approximately the same deal as the Twins
17 votes
A's got a worse deal than the Twins
106 votes
Who cares? What matters most is the Giants were on the losing end of the one of the worst trades in history.

Harden the All-Star

Question: If Rich Harden were selected to the All-Star game as the A's sole representative and then traded to the Cubs, would he still represent Oakland in the midsummer classic?  Would he lose his place in the ASG and get replaced by Duke?  Can I get a ruling on this?

Given that he went to a national league team, if he pitched in the ASG as an Athletic, wouldn't he have an incentive to throw the game?
