Hokies in the NFL Week 12
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and enjoyed the extra amount of football from Thursday-Monday.
You know the drill. Follow the jump to see how former Hokies fared in Week 12 of the NFL Season.
Hokies in the NFL Week 11
Yes, the Broncos beat the Jets. Yes, the Eagles beat the Giants (without Vick). Yes, the 49ers still only have one loss. Yes, the Redsins lost again...wait that one's not surprising.
Follow the jump to see how former Hokies fared in Week 11.
Hokies in the NFL Week 10
Week 10 of the NFL is in the books and there's not too much to write home about for former Hokies after this past week's games. So, I'll do it for them. No poll this week, really only one candidate in my mind and he got the "Game ball".
Follow the jump to see how former Hokies fared in Week 10 of the NFL season.
Hokies in the NFL Week 9
Week 9 of the NFL season is in the books and teams like Mike Vick/Darryl Tapp's Eagles needed to continue to right the ship as the games remaining dwindle down. Would Tim Tebow find a new target with Eddie Royal?

Hokies in the NFL Week 8
Week 8 of the NFL season is in the books and there's a little more clarity in terms of which teams are real and which teams are not. Are the Eagles real? That remains to be seen but they took a big step back to making people believers.
Follow the jump to see how former Hokies fared in Week 8 of the 2011 NFL season.
Hokies in the NFL Week 7
Well, I finally got around to Week 7 of the NFL season (my bad) so here's your recap. Week 8 will come tomorrow after Brandon Flowers and the Chiefs play the Chargers on MNF tonight.
Tim Tebow got his first start with the Broncos and Eddie Royal return from injury to help out in the win. The Lions dropped their second straight game as they lost to the Falcons. New Orleans? Just a 62-7 beat down on the Indianapolis Colts. I mean come on, can't we go ahead and give Peyton Manning the MVP? He's clearly the Most Valuable Player.

Hokies in the NFL Week 6
Well, as injuries pile up (currently 4 former Hokies are out for the year) and teams start to get their bye weeks going, there is not a whole lot for this week's post.
For a bit of a news update, Josh Morgan will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Broncos' WR Eddie Royal was actually the talk of some trades this week and as Brandon Lloyd was dealt, it looked like Royal would join him in the departure list. However, the Broncos held on to Royal and will now have to look at either giving him a new contract or losing him in the offseason.

Hokies in the NFL Week 5
So we're back with the Hokies in the NFL series this week with last week's Week 5 while posting Week 6 tomorrow. Did I say the word "week" enough for you? Week.
Another former Hokie joins the injured list this week, one former Hokie has a rough outing, and one bounces back from an injury with a solid week.

Hokies in the NFL Week 5 Postponed
Hey folks, I unfortunately am going to have to postpone the Hokies in the NFL for Week 5. Next week's will be a double up on Week 5 and 6, my apologies.
In the meantime, another former Hokie was injured and is out for the season. San Francisco 49ers WR Josh Morgan broke a bone in his ankle during the 49ers big win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Morgan had to have surgery and is done for the season, joining Ryan Williams and Roc Carmichael as former Hokies that are watching the rest of the season from the sidelines.
Hokies in the NFL Week 4
First off, apologies for the delay in this week's post.
Week 4 had some very compelling games as the Eagles fell again, the Bills lost for the first time this season, the Vikings and Chiefs clashed in a battle of the worsts, Houston scores an upset, and the Lions are still undefeated.
Six former Hokies were inactive due to injury and one joined the list of players out for the season. Follow the jump to see how former Hokies that did play in Week 4 of the NFL season fared.
Hokies in the NFL Week 3
The NFL season continues to be a weird one and that's pretty evident with Week 3. The Bills continue to 3-0 with a last second victory over the Patriots (no comment), the Lions are 3-0 and the Colts are 0-3. Of course the bigger news out of Indy was that Manning is likely out until 2012. The Jets went to Oakland and LOST to the Raiders. If we've learned anything from this young season, it's that we know nothing at all.
It was another interesting week for former Hokies in the NFL. Mike Vick left the game early with a broken...no, wait just bruised hand after a hit in the Eagles game against the Giants. Kam Chancellor had an eye-opening day for the Seahawks and a pair of Hokies had to miss action because of injuries.
Follow the jump to see how former Hokies did in Week 3 of the NFL season.
Hokies in the NFL Week 2
Quite an interesting week for former Hokies in the NFL. One's season ended, one got beat up, one continued to score, and one got a whole heck of a lot richer.
One of the big storylines in the NFL heading into Week 2 was Mike Vick returning to play in Atlanta for the first time since...you know. Vick's return looked like it might be a good one initially but things quickly soured (see below) for the Philadelphia QB. Vick got knocked out of the game by his own lineman--unintentional, of course--and left the game early.
The world does not revolve around Mike Vick and there are several other Hokies that took the field on Sunday. Follow the jump to see how former Hokies did in Week 2 of the NFL regular season.
Hokies in the NFL Week 1
The first week of the NFL season is in the books after last night's games and as I promised, I will continue to bring you the weekly updates on how each Hokie in the NFL performed. Now, as you may have seen with last week's post, there were several players that were cut from rosters and the list is significantly shorter.
Week 1 of the NFL was a wild one as the opening game of the year came down to a last second goal line stand by the defending Super Bowl Champion Packers, the Bills walloped the defending AFC West champion Chiefs, and the Steelers turned the ball over 7 times.
Follow the jump to see how former Hokies did in the first week of the season.
Hokies in the NFL: Preseason Week 4
The final week of preseason is usually reserved for the players trying to make teams. Unfortunately, there were a handful of Hokies that didn't make the cut.
Xavier Adibi cut by Texans (signed by Vikings), David Clowney cut by the Panthers, Chris Ellis cut by the Steelers, Vincent fuller cut by the Titans, John Graves cut by the Texans, Pierson Prioleau cut by the Saints, Shayne Graham cut by the Cowboys, Macho Harris cut by the Steelers, Andre Smith cut by the Bears, and Steven Friday cut by the Texans. There's a good chance that some of these guys will land somewhere else or even on said team's practice squad.
James Anderson was rewarded with a new contract by James Anderson the Carolina Panthers. Darren Evans made the Colts final roster.
Follow the jump to see how Hokies (that actually played) did in the final week of preseason.
Hokies in the NFL: Preseason Week 3
I'm back (on time this week) with your weekly wrap-up of the Hokies in the NFL. Most teams have their starters play a lot in Week 3 and then rest in Week 4 so guys like Vick, Hall, Royal, and James Anderson accumulated a lot of playing time.
Changes: Last week, the Cardinals lost RB Ryan Williams to a torn patella tendon so unfortunately there's one less player to report on. Brent Bowden was cut by the Jaguars, the second time they've cut a Tech punter this preseason--Brian Saunders was the other. However, Macho Harris was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers (okay, so he was signed before the game against the Eagles on the 17th but I missed it).
Tyrod Taylor had a great performance and Mike Vick had a strong bounceback after a poor showing in Week 2. Several other Hokies had quality performances in Week 3 as well so follow the jump to see how they did.
Hokies in the NFL: Preseason Week 2
First off, apologies for not getting this up on Wednesday. But hey, it's here now and just like the pros, I'm in training for the regular season. This week you're going to see a lot of "did not accumulate any stats" because as the NFL regular season creeps closer, the guys buried in the depth chart get less snaps.
Well, bad news for one Hokie in the NFL as Ryan Williams tore his patella tendon and is out for the year for the Arizona Cardinals. Williams was expected to compete with Beanie Wells for the starting job at running back for the Cardinals. However, now that he's in the pressbox for the rest of the year, his role as the potential #1 back down the road for the Cardinals may be in jeopardy as Wells will be the starter this year.
But, I digress. And I may be wrong, you never know with this stuff.
Follow the jump to see how the Hokies did in the NFL.
Hokies in the NFL: Preseason Week 1
Like many of you probably do, I check every NFL boxscore that has a former Hokie playing in it. If you do this, you know it takes a long, long time to do and sometimes you miss a player or two.
Throughout the upcoming NFL season, you'll have all of those Hokies and their performances in one central location here on Gobbler Country. In addition, we'll have a poll at the end for the Hokie with the best week in the NFL.

Putting on my Retirement Monocle
Over the past few months, you may have noticed a diminished presence from me. Throughout the course of the season I struggled to find a balance between the blog and personal/school life. That really pulled at me and I hated not being able to give my undivided attention to the site. With that said, the time has come for me to step away from Winging It In Motown.
Yes, that's right, I will be going to the blogger retirement community where the basements are dark, the underwear is fresh and the sources are always wrong.
This is a decision that I've flipped flopped on over and over because it's such a hard thing to walk away from. I absolutely love this community and everything that it has become. Oddly enough, that is one of the reasons I've decided to step down. With the job I just started, I've quickly learned that the free time that I used to have will be minimal and I absolutely do not want to go into another season and just be invisible.
Knowing that the site will be in the very capable hands of JJ made the decision a lot easier. I have the utmost faith that he (along with Graham, Jeff, Josh, and Robocop) will continue to take the site in the right direction. My departure is going to be final and I will not be staying on as an author or anything of that sort. I will still stop by for game threads and things like that, but my writing here is done.
I don't really want to sit here and toot my own horn for a single second about the site. Instead, I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for making this an incredible experience for me. Some of you I have known since the 08-09 season (hi, Tulo!) while others I have just gotten to know over the course of the most recent playoff run. Either way, I've enjoyed getting to know you all and it's been a great experience.
Again, thank you all for everything and as always, Let's Go Red Wings.
SBN Mock Draft: With the 24th Selection, Winging It In Motown selects...
First off, let me say that this is in no way a decision that was made by me or any of the other gentlemen. Instead, we called upon our good friend and draft enthusiast Michael Petrella from The Production Line. You all may remember Petrella picking our guy last year and it was dead on with what the Red Wings actually did as they selected Riley Sheahan from Notre Dame.
Naturally, Petrella was again our go-to-guy for this decision. So who did he pick? Follow the jump to find out.
Season Recap/Grades: Darren Helm & Justin Abdelkader
We continue our season recap/grades today with two of the players that are expected to be a big part of the team's future. So far, we've looked at the Eurotwins, Johan and Homer, Val and Huds, the Netminders, and Bert and Cleary. Today, we're grading Helm and Gator on their performances during the 2010-2011 regular and post season.
Preseason Expectations: In my preseason expectations post, I called for Helm to get less time on ice now that Mike Modano and Jiri Hudler were on the team. Helm's ice-time decreased by about 1:12 per game from last season, but his production increased this year as he hit career highs in goals and assists. I called for Abdelkader to lead in hits and fighting majors (he was tops in hits with 188 and tied in fighting majors with 3). I also called for him to get 6-10 goals and he hit right on 7 this year.
Follow the jump for the rest of the season recap and the grades for each player.
Season Recap/Grades: Howard, MacDonald, Osgood
Continuing our series of season recap and grades for the Red Wings, today we look at the goalies. Heading into the 2010-2011 season, Jimmy Howard was to be the top-dog and well, that pretty much stayed true as he followed up his rookie campaign with another impressive year. The Red Wings got some unexpected help from Joey MacDonald as Chris Osgood went down with injury. The Red Wings also tried to make a move for the KHL-fleeing Evgeni Nabokov, but those crafty goaltending stockpilers on Long Island took him off waivers before he made it to Detroit. Did that serve as a motivational factor for Jimmy Howard? Who really knows.
Preseason Expectations: In the season preview, I called for Howard to win at least 35 games again and for his GAA to stay around 2.3. Only one of these came true but hey, I'm an optimist. I also called for Chris Osgood to get more games played and about 12-15 wins. Again, I'm an optimist.
Follow the jump for the rest of the recap and grades.
SCF Game 1 Open Thread: Bruins at Canucks
Tonight, the Stanley Cup Finals start as the Boston Bruins travel to Vancouver to take on the Canucks in Game 1. The Sedin twins look to win the first Stanley Cup for the Vancouver franchise while the Bruins look to win their first Cup since 1972. Mark Recchi is the only player (on either team) that was alive when the Bruins last won.
Head to Nucks Misconduct for the Vancouver perspective and Stanley Cup of Chowder for the Boston perspective.
Puck drops at 8:00 PM and the game will air on NBC. Comment away below and enjoy the game. Here's the paths each team took to get here:
Vancouver Canucks:
Western Quarterfinals: Defeated Chicago Blackhawks in 7 games
Western Semifinals: Defeated Nashville Predators in 6 games
Western Finals: Defeated San Jose Sharks in 5 games.
Boston Bruins:
Eastern Quarterfinals: Defeated Montreal Canadiens in 7 games
Eastern Semifinals: Defeated Philadelphia Flyers in 4 games
Eastern Finals: Defeated Tampa Bay Lightning in 7 games
So, coming next in the series? Vancouver defeats Boston in 4 games? Sorry, Vancouver. Just jinxed you.
Report: Brendan Shanahan to take over Colin Campbell's job
Some big news in the NHL's front office today as it looks like Brendan Shanahan will be taking over Colin Campbell's duties as the league's disciplinarian.
Darren Drager tweeted the following:
Sources tell TSN Colin Campbell is giving up role as NHL disciplinarian. Brendan Shanahan will likely take over.
and Bob McKenzie followed up with this:
Campbell is not relinquishing duties as VP, Hockey Ops, he is only stepping away from the disciplinary aspect of the job.
What does it mean? Follow the jump and chip in your own 2 cents.
Let's Do This: Red Wings at Sharks, Game 7
This is the last game of the series. Again, no messing around. Game time.
Puck drops at 9:00 PM EDT
Game 6: Third Period Thread
Detroit is still dominating the flow of play and has out-shot the Sharks 32-13 through 2 periods of play.
Antti Niemi is playing the best game of his life right now and that's the reason for the 0 on the scoreboard under Detroit. However, if the Wings keep dominating the play like this, they will find the net. I swear to it.
Comment away below and LET'S GO RED WINGS!
Game 6: Second Period Thread
Hell of a first period by the Red Wings. Consistent offensive pressure by the Red Wings in the first period.
Detroit outshot San Jose by a 18-6 margin in the first period.
Effort like this is incredible to watch. Keep it up and a shot will find the back of the net on Niemi.
Comment away below and LET'S GO RED WINGS!

Morning Skate: Do or Die, Part II
We all know what's on the line tonight in San Jose: a Detroit win continues the series while a San Jose win sends the Sharks to the next round. So, like on Friday night, the Red Wings are faced with a "do or die" situation tonight.
The big question will be how each team responds to the dramatic late game heroics from Darren Helm. The Red Wings can build on that game and keep the pressure on the Sharks. However, San Jose can turn that game into a motivational factor to say that they won't let this series go past today's game.
The game starts at 8:00 PM EDT tonight and will air on VERSUS.
Fear The Fin is your SB Nation Sharks' site.
More after the jump.
