Blogging The Boys My Reconstruction Plan

Now that the the season is over, I'm already looking forward to the offseason and seeing how Jason Garrett (hopefully w/ very little Jerry) continues to mold this team into his version of the 90's Boys. The Cowboys have to get better at several key positions; secondary, interior offensive line, and opposite DWare, probably being the most important. Somewhere along the way, it wouldn't hurt to address the D line, and depth at ILB, and QB. So with an entire offseason what follows is my hope/prayer of how things are taken care.

** Names may be changed, but general philosophy is what I'm hoping for **

Blog a Bull What's Our Best Option?

With my excitement over the season actually being played and this shortened offseason, I like most of you, have been scouring the internet for any Bulls related rumors. Who will we grab to fill out that SG spot? While searching, I ran across this write up on Bulls Confidential, it basically lists all the names we've been attached to this offseason. And from looking at it, it would seem like Gar Paxsdorf have a couple of plans in mind.

I would like to see what you guys think would be the best option, hence the name of my post. So I'm going to throw out a couple of possibilities from what we know and from what I read in the article. Feel free to add your own to the discussion.

There are 3 names that would seem to fit. OJ Mayo, Arron Afflalo, and Nick Young, the latter two are restricted free agents, but seeing as though we only have the MLE to use, trading for them is more realistic. Then you have the old standby in Courtney Lee. If we go after Arron, it would seem like Taj would have to be included in those deals. And maybe that's why we've shown the interest in Shawne Williams. I'm not sure if Taj would hold any value for MEM in a Mayo trade, since they have the same type of player on their bench already in Arthur. It would seem like Asik may be the man on the move in that scenario. And WAS already has young bigs in McGee, Blatche, Booker, and Seraphin, so I really don't see them needing any bigs. Of course, we already know HOU wants Asik for Lee.

So which trade would you make? and which is most realistic?

1. OJ Mayo for Korver, Asik, and our 1st rd pick. I put Korver in, because looking at their roster they have a Brewer clone in Allen, and a young complete SG in Henry, but no sharpshooters.

2. Arron Affalo for Taj, Brewer, and our 1st rd pick. This seems to be the best option for us IMO. Nuggets get a PF to put in between Nene and Gallo, and a starting quality defensive SG to put next to Lawson and Miller.

3. Nick Young for Korver, Watson, and our 1st rd pick. This one seems like the most realistic. I'm pretty sure Jordan Crawford will be their starting SG this year, at least from all the promotions they've done. I live in the DC area, and he and John Wall were the poster boys for the new uniforms they'll be wearing this year. Getting Watson gives them someone capable of backing up Wall, and Korver gives them the shooter to space the floor for Wall. Plus, I figure they owe us for giving them Capt. Kirk and our 1st for basically nothing a few years back lol.

I'm going to go with option #3, which saves our big man depth. After trading for Young, you go out and sign Caron Butler to back up the SF spot, and pick up TMac to run the point for the 2nd unit. TJ Ford would also be an option at the backup PG spot, and really both could be brought in at the vet minimum. I chose TMac, just because of the matchup potentials.

You end up with a team that looks like this:
First Unit: DRose / Nick Young / Deng / Boozer / Noah
Second Unit: TMac / Brewer / Caron Butler / Taj / Asik
Deep Reserves: TJ Ford, Jimmy Butler, Kurt Thomas

That's a pretty good looking team, with a nice mixture of youth and vets. Definitely, a challenger for the championship this year.

Blog a Bull Your Dream Whirlwind Offseason

Hopefully the meetings that are reportedly happening between owners and players can get us to an agreement by Wednesday.  I doubt it, but my fingers are still crossed.  The players have to realize that they are not going to get anything over 50% BRI, and hope to tweak the mid-level exception and sign and trade restraints to make this work

That being said if we do get an agreement by Wednesday, then what will follow will be a feeding frenzy in free agency.  We will be working under new rules, may see some amnesty victims, and will have plenty of options out there.

I know I'm being overly optimistic, but I haven't been able to throw out a potential trade or FA pick up all summer.  I had to let myself daydream a second.  For this daydream, I will use the $58 mil cap and $72 mil luxary tax mark from last year.

Casual Hoya Mega Conference Idea

The Big 12 is about to go the way of the dodo. The Pac-12 looks like it at least would like to become the Pac-16. I would suspect that the Big 10, which now has 14 teams, I believe, will most likely be looking for the scraps from the Big 12 feeding frenzy. And as always, the SEC is always looking to snatch up extra teams. With all this movement and the development of the "Super Conference", the only way I see the Big East staying together is to bond with the ACC, and become the 1st "Mega Conference". THE EAST COAST CONFERENCE!

Blog a Bull Let's play Sherlock Holmes with our empty SG spot

1st, let me get my draft thoughts out the way. I'm happy with the results, the only thing I think we whiffed on was somehow finding a way to grab Charles Jenkins in the second round. We were told going in that they didn't expect 3 rookies, and we pretty much knew an international stash was coming. So we used a pick to move up and get probably the 2nd or 3rd best international prospect in this draft. And I'm of the opinion that Jimmy Butler surprises this season. Good draft for the future and now.
So we know we'll be waiting until after the lockout and new CBA is agreed upon, to see who the Bulls will be starting at SG for 2011. This link has a list of potential FA SG this summer: http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=20283
The draft has given us a couple clues into who that might be...

Blog a Bull Maybe we don't need a "Home Run"

We've all seen the cold shower quotes, basically washing our dreams of Iggy, and for some Monta Ellis away. And even though Sham thinks it's plausible, I doubt Capt Jack is in the picture either. Any of those players could have been considered a swing for the fences, and be the "missing piece" to a championship next year. But let's think bigger picture. What if winning a championship next year isn't the goal? What if winning multiple championships is the goal? Does bringing on the extra salary still allow for flexibility once the new CBA is signed in? Maybe with the Capt, but certainly not with Iggy or Monta, if you believe Booz isn't going anywhere. (Which I do) To stay with the baseball theme, let's say instead of looking for the big hit, we try to get a big inning started. We already have DRose and Thibs on 3rd, Lu, Booz, and Jo on 2nd, and a great bench on 1st, with no outs (because who thought we'd get this far, so soon) What move could we make to keep payroll down for the next couple of years, still provide the talent we need to fill our holes in the lineup, and not sacrifice any "runners on base"? The next idea is my shot at trying to hit that "base clearing triple". Not only lining us up for Championship contention this year, but also keeping the flexibility to make moves later on. Remember, Blake Griffin is 2013...

Blogging The Boys Please let Julio Jones be there at #9

That sets up the perfect scenario for us to move down.  Conceivably, Dallas would have strong interest from St. Louis and New England to move up for the last big time WR in this draft.  As much as I would love to get an extra 3rd rounder, and I know that's what the "almighty" trade value chart says, the front office has to go for bigger fish.  I would be disappointed with anything less than a 2nd to move down, and would love to squeeze a 3rd out in exchange for our 4th or 5th.

With no free agency period before the draft, we're looking at more holes than usual to fill.  My top areas of need for the team are: Offensive Line (1.OT, 2.G/C), the Secondary (1.CB, 2.FS*, 3.SS), Linebacker (1.ILB, 2.OLB) and Defensive Line (1.DE, 2.NT). Sprinkle in a big back, if we are finally going to get rid of Barber, and a nice all around solid WR to throw in the slot.  Now, there's no way we can fill all of those in just the draft, but if things fall right, we could get a very quality haul.

The following is my attempt at some GM'ing

Blog a Bull Patrick Ewing Jr.: D-League Call Up?

I know we're likely looking at signing Rasual Butler or Corey Brewer to fill out our roster, but a player I'd like to see get a chance on our squad is currently in the D-League.  I know that we currently have only 12 guys on the roster, and one of those 2 will get us to the minimum of 13, but if the NBA works like the NFL, where if you can sign a guy at the end of the year and kinda just keep him around for next year (like a practice squad player), we should jump on dude.

This player is Patrick Ewing Jr.  He's a combo forward, that I would play more at the SF behind Luol.  Came out of G'Town with the same class as big Roy Hibbert and Jeff Green, and like his former teammates has been steadily improving, although his improvements were made in the D-League instead of NBA. He was selected a D-League All-Star this year.  He's always been a terrific defender and has developed a nice outside shooting touch.  He's not going to break any ankles, but he can get to the rack and finish.  Check out this DraftExpress profile written earlier this year

One of the nicer surprises among the players we saw in our four days in South Padre, Patrick Ewing Jr has improved noticeably from his time in college and may be one of the most interesting players in the entire D-League.

The biggest development with Ewing is his improved shooting ability, as he's shooting a solid 36% from behind the arc on 2.8 attempts per game to go along with 77% from the free-throw line, despite never shooting higher than 66% in college. Taking on a solid scoring load and also dishing out a very high number of assists for a combo-forward, Ewing's offensive abilities on the whole are significantly improved.

While he's never going to be one to break his man down in isolation or create his own shots reliably due to his average ball-handling skills, Ewing is doing a great job moving in the offense, scoring on cuts, in transition, and by crashing the offensive glass, and finally developing into a respectable floor spacer capable of hitting spot-up shots even when on the move. His basketball IQ and hustle also help matters, as he's willing to contribute in any way possible and serves as a nice glue guy to do all the little things well.

Defensively, Ewing's intensity and awareness are as high as ever, and he uses his length and size to make lots of plays from the help side. He's still a tweener, prone to being beat on the perimeter by quicker 3's and severely prone to being backed down in the post by more powerful 4's, but he does his best to hold his own against most and projects to match up with many bench NBA players well on the defensive end.

Looking forward, continuing to develop into an even better perimeter shooter would clearly be the best thing to improve Ewing's pro prospects, as he's probably about reached his ceiling in most other areas considering he's 26 years old and has never shown much knack for shot creation. Ewing is still somewhat caught between positions defensively, but could start getting some NBA looks this season or next, especially if his shooting continues to improve.

Doesn't he sound like a Luol clone?  Well, at 6'9 235, he's a little bigger than Luol.  And did you see them use Gar Paxsdorf's favorite phrase? "He's a glue guy"...  Here are his stats for the year in the D-League.

And coming from G'Town, you know he has a high basketball IQ and can make the right decisions with the rock in his hands.  That's one reason I'm such a fan of picking guys from G'Town, they may not have the incredible athleticism, but you always know that they will defend and now with JTIII running the ship, they will be schooled in how to play unselfishly, and be great passers and cutters.  **Hint Hint** Austin Freeman in the 2nd ** Hint Hint**
Is there anyone out there that caught your eyes?

Blog a Bull Big Sexy + Big Red + JJ = $4.3 Mil to Play With It + $1.2 Mil in the Bank

I read the fanshots on Paxson, Bogans, and team chemistry in general and have come away with one conclusion.  The Bulls aren't giving up anyone out the core rotation in any trade.  We are strictly dealing with draft picks.

So how do you get away with that?  You have to trade guys who will get bought out.  Think Big Z last year with Cleveland.  Now, we don't have to trade all three, but we can use them in some combination along with our picks to get an extra guy for cheap.  No, this trade may not be the one that sends us to Championship bliss, but you may look back at it during a playoff series and say to yourself "Damn, glad we grabbed that guy."

Blog a Bull If You're Looking for a New SG, keep your eyes on Houston

I say this not only because of Courtney Lee, but because they also have a trade piece available that might lend to us being an enabler for a three team deal.  Aaron Brooks is gone in my opinion, even though management has said the opposite.  I don't expect them to say anything other than that but I don't expect for Brooks to be on that team after the deadline.

Now I assume, that if they would trade Courtney Lee for a serviceable big, that they are looking for a more than serviceable big + a 1st for Brooks.  Now, look at the teams that are reportedly interested in Brooks; New York, Portland, Minnesota, Memphis, and Sacramento.  Depending on how bad they want Brooks, we could definitely get our SG upgrade, whether it's Lee or another SG on the block, and could get away without including Asik.

Blog a Bull My Stepback Assessment

Ok, so this year's team is on pace with the '97 Champion edition.  Our only glaring weakness is starting SG, it's not even the depth behind the starter.  The top spot in the East is pretty open for us.  The Heat is a flawed team, IF you can throw a quality PG and big man at them.  The Magic is an offensive team, that acts like it's D'ing up.  The Celtics are the Celtics, they will be a tough squad, but aging legs through the 82 make them vulnerable.  So why isn't the Org trying to seize the moment and add that guy to push us over the top?

34-16.  Leading the Central Division by a crazy 12 games.  NO ONE thought we'd be this much out front.  Even though I did find this nugget from an AUGUST 15TH fanpost I wrote:

Record wise -- I think we come into the new year 25-6, 1st in the Central by about 3 or 4 games, and only behind Miami in the Conference.  But I see a rocky Jan. leaving us 33-13 going into Feb.  I think we've jelled pretty well, but that it's noticable that the offense is more efficient when we have more shooters on the floor.  Luol is having a better than average season, but he and Brewer on the floor at the same time just doesn't work.  They both are best at slashing and mid range game, but don't help spread the floor.  But because of no injuries and back to "2007 form" play, he has become a valueable asset entering the trade deadline.

This was before anyone knew the horror of Keith "F*CKING" Bogans starting.  Pretty damn close huh?.. I digress

We've done all of this without a truly full squad.  This is why the Org is in no hurry to make a move.

Blog a Bull The Bulls Have to be the Third Wheel

For this team to make any significant upgrade at the SG spot, like we would like, they are going to have to use their assets as sweetener in someone else's bigger deal.  Yea, we could have some guys who might be slight improvements; like Parker, Rush, Webster, or C. Brewer, with the 1st round pick and our leftovers. All better than Bogans, but not really by much considering all things. The only way to make a straight up trade with another team to get the "big fish" at SG, would involve sending out one of core players.  Ideally, you want to keep Taj, Korver, Brewer, Asik, and even Watson (unless you can get a solid PG in return too)

Blog a Bull A Whole New View of Things

The earlier fanpost breaking down Lu's game, Thib's insistence on playing him ~40 mins/game, and JJ's recent trip down to the D-League got me thinking.  A couple happy hours drinks helped the process.

I'm still under the impression that this year's 1st round pick is better used in trade instead of keeping until draft time.  One thing has changed, what if we can get a nice vet SF backup (perferably a young established vet).

Right now with Bogans starting, we get Brewer coming in playing the SF spot and Korver playing SG, or in most cases Deng staying in while the others play the SG.  Korver very rarily plays the SF, at least not defensively, so my hypothesis is trade for a SF that has size and can hit a 3 pointer.  They are way more plentiful than starting quality SG's.

Blog a Bull Why The Bulls Should Use This Year's 1st Round Pick for a Trade...

If any mixture of Bogans, JJ, and our 2011 first round pick can get this team a competent SG for the rest of the year, the org. better jump on it.  I hear the voices, saying the pick is too valuable to give up for only a slight upgrade and rental player, and most times I would agree.  The CBA uncertainty turns that argument on it's ear though.  Whereas if this was an offseason like last year's where we could go in with about $4 mil of cap space to play around with, plus the short contracts of JJ, CJ, Korver, and Brewer, you could wait until around draft time and make a move.  But since no one knows what going to happen deals like that to get cap space aren't going to be happening in my opinion.

Wait until closer to the deadline, when teams that aren't making it know they won't be making a push and pick up a rental.  It may not get us a championship, but it could get us to the Eastern Conference Finals, and the added experience for our core would be priceless.  Well worth the 1st round pick, especially if we can pick up a 2nd round pick in the exchange

Blog a Bull What Will the New CBA Look Like?

We're always on here proposing trades, and making deals, but without knowing the rules.  No one knows the rules, because they don't even exist.  The majority of articles I've read say the league wants a hard cap, but is it the NHL kind with no give or the NFL one with a couple of soft spots?  How much will it be set at?  Will there still be exceptions?

Right now, if we stand pat, we look pretty good for any type of cap alterations.  If we do make a trade look for it to be an expiring contract (rental) or young, cheap guy (potential).  No big names.

Blog a Bull Back to Reality... Another Trade Idea to Get Bogans OUT!!  Or...

A Win Now AND Later Thought Process...

I admit I got caught up in the Melo-drama and swept up in the "Let's move Deng" movement, but I think we'd all agree that Bogans just needs to be gone.  He serves no real purpose, Deng isn't the problem  And I hope that Gar Paxdorf is racking its collective mind to find some way of pulling off a trade for a real SG, to start next DRose.  This team has an unique opportunity to be in a position to be big-time title contenders for years to come, IF we play our cards right.

I've had plenty of suggestions and scenarios, but I can't ever find one that is a straight up trade.  At least not one where we don't have to give up a core player in our rotation.  This is just the latest edition

Blog a Bull Where There's Smoke, It's Gotta Be Some Fire, Right?

Spurred on by these two fanshots : Bulls one of the "most active" teams in trade talks & It's Tech N9ne.. he's back .  I have gone back to drawing board.

It's plainly obvious to me that the team needs another option for that 3rd/4th scorer, because basically without Noah we're not getting the scoring out of the 1st team that we need.  Since Deng tends to disappear from time to time, we're left without a reliable option to fill in, since Noah is not here to get us the offensive putbacks off the boards.  I keep seeing box scores where Booz and DRose have high 20's in scoring then our next highest scorer is like low teen's.  That can't happen if we want to be a contender.

Unless, we're getting a quality big back, I don't think we include Taj in any deals.  So how do we get our mythical
SG who can shoot and defend?

Blog a Bull Play GM With Me...

If you've read my posts before you know I like to I like to step into Gar Paxsdorf's shoes a lot.  Once again I invite you along for the ride.  Some of you guys have some nice ideas (others are, let's say less than intelligent), so I'd like to see where you guys stand. So after going through the first full month of the season, and looking at these Bulls, what do you see?  What do you do with these guys?

I know there are different posts that hit one or two of the subjects I'm about to bring up, but I thought I'd try to consolidate and add on.  So here are my questions:  (feel free to add to the list)

--  Do we need to upgrade any position, and if so, what are they?

--  Who do you target to upgrade these positions?

--  Who are the players who are expendable?

--  What other assets would you use?

--  If you are going to make a move, do you wait until the trade deadline?

My answers follow...

Blog a Bull Does Gar Paxdorf Have A Plan?.. I know I see one (LONG READ)

I can't help but hope that Gar Paxsdorf is thinking somewhere along the same lines that I am.  And I believe that they are, because they left that almost $1.5 mil under the cap.  And if they are thinking the same way I'm thinking than you can forget about any big money trades.  So no Melo, Rip, BG, Iggy, Kevin Martin, or Ellis.  Think young with untapped potential but has shown flashes.  Here's my thinking:

Blog a Bull Wild Way to Improve.. Or Let's Make A Deal (for Mayo)

Title inspired by my late night viewing of The Bullwinkle Show lol..

When Boozer went down before Preseason, I was expecting nothing more than a team trying to tread water until his return.  .500 was the ceiling of my expectations, suffice to say that the team has surpassed those expectations, even though there is time for that to be proven wrong between now and his return.  I feel like the team is legit, and I'm not the only one with that opinion.

When you add our early success, with the pending return of Boozer, and the way the Eastern Conference has been shaping up early, it has to give you a quiet sense of optimism that this team can truly be EC title contenders THIS year.  Miami hasn't jelled nearly as fast as everyone expected, and looks like a team that can be taken advantage of with a good PG and quality bigs (Hello, DRose, Noah, and Booz!!).  Boston has looked good, but lose their floor general, Rondo, for a while and those hamstrings can be pains in the butt to heal.  Orlando has looked shaky, but have gotten wins off of Howard and Nelson.  Atlanta doesn't really look like they will be matching their seasons of the last couple of years.  And Milwaukee, and Charlotte are both off to bad starts.

I've jumped off the "Trade for Melo" Bandwagon, I think Deng has proven that he can be an excellent SF in this system and a worthy 3rd/4th option in the offense, but he isn't a 2nd option and I think that has also become clear.  With that said, I'd much rather have Deng at $9 mil/year, than Melo at close to $20 mil/year, especially if it means keeping Noah.

To me the best way to make this team better, and IMO become legit Eastern Conference title contenders is to make our starting lineup a complete lineup.  Which means adding a SG that can take over the spot.  Bogans and Brewer are a good platoon at SG, but we need someone who can do or at least come close to matching their combined skills in one person.  A person who is capable of getting a couple of 20-something nights, on the nights when Deng disappears to supplement D.Rose and Boozer.  A guy who can be depended on to compete and play good solid D on the big-time SG's he'll face, while at the same time being able to put some pressure back on them on the offensive side.  There was a recent article by Sam Smith listing and detailing the SG's most likely available on the trade block, if you haven't read it, here it is: Bulls May Need Better Shooting Guard to Make Run

The 3 names on that list that stick out to me are O.J. Mayo, Rudy Fernandez, and Marcus Thornton.  Basically because all three can be had for on rookie contracts, which means they'll be cheap (for the time being) and still young enough to grow with this team.  Thornton, would be the cheapest, he could be had for our own 1st rounder, I would think, but he doesn't really seem like the complete SG I'm looking for in this type of trade, because his D isn't good enough.  He would be a great complement to Bogans or Brewer though.  I think the realization about Brandon Roy's bad knees has raised Rudy's price tag, and if they weren't going for out 1st and JJ before, who knows what they'll ask for now.  That leaves Mayo, you may have noticed that I've been pimping his name around the site for some time now.  I just think he is the perfect piece to this puzzle.  I'll explain after the jump...

Blog a Bull Early - Mid December Will Be Key

At this point we're 4-3, with the dreaded "Circus Trip" looming.  Reports are that Booz will be back mid December.  The date that newly signed free agents can be traded is Dec. 19th.  If we make it through the "Circus Trip" without Booz and are winning at a pretty good clip, I can't see us standing pat until the trade deadline to make a move.

With Miami showing chinks in the armor, and we've already put up a pretty good fight against Boston, and by the time Booz comes back, we'll have played and hopefully showed well against Orlando and LA.  The org has to be sitting there ready to make something happen.

Blog a Bull You Want Mayo With That?

I know it's a dumb pun, but.. If we could get OJ Mayo, without destroying any of our core, would you do it?...  I've always been a fan of the trade Memphis for Xavier/Mayo plan.  It just seemed like the most efficient AND rewarding move.  Fernandez doesn't measure up to these two, sorry.

So with Rudy Gay signing his contract,  Mike Conley signing his contract, and the addition of Grevis Vasquez, Xavier Henry, and Tony Allen that looks to leave OJ Mayo as the odd man out in the Grizzlies' mini trifecta.  Obivously, Gay is the centerpiece, They see Conley as a steady point, and I think resigning Baby Gasol is a given.  That leaves Z-Bo and Mayo.  And they have THREE NEWLY SIGNED replacements for Mayo.

I almost think Gar Paxsdorf is thinking something around these lines, but then I think naw, I'm a halfway inebriated fan brainstorming on what could be.  But follow me for a second

Camden Chat Prince Fielder Anyone?

I'm not a real diehard follower of all things baseball (that's my disclaimer lol), but I have stayed a loyal O's fan throughout the losing.  But it seems like he would be a perfect fit on our team and in the middle of the lineup.  Putting him in the middle makes Luke Scott, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, and Matt Wieters that more dangerous.

Blog a Bull Melo Dreams

I am loving the fact that we are high on Melo's list of teams to go to.  I'm part of the group that believes we should really go after him.  I wouldn't give up Noah though.

I believe that if Denver and Melo meet and Denver's front office comes out with the info that Melo has NO intention of signing the extension, then they may just blow up the roster.  They have contracts that they really are trying to unload (J.R Smith, Kenyon Martin come to mind) and they have Billups as an expiring (not exactly but he only has like 3 or 4 guaranteed next year).  This is where we may be able to coax some teams to help us, help them.  From what I can tell from reading about the Denver Org., it looks like they won't be down with just adding cap space and would want some young talent in return.

With that in mind, I came up with this epic trade...

Blog a Bull Can we swing two more bargain deals?
