Report: Cubs close to resigning Dempster

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting that the Cubs are reportedly very close to resigning Dempster to a four year contract. The link can be found here:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8812098/Cubs-close-to-re-signing-righty-Dempster?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=49

This makes me somewhat happy about the current state of the Cubs. This justifies the dumping of Kerry Wood in a sense. If we were unable to resign him, well I wouldn't have been the only one angry..

Kerry Wood Files for Free Agency

Of course, this was expected. Here is a snipit of the article off the Cubs' website:

Right-hander Kerry Wood filed for free agency on Friday, officially making himself available for the third consecutive offseason.

Catcher Henry Blanco and right-hander Jon Lieber also filed a day after four other Cubs, including Ryan Dempster, did the same. Free agents can sign with only their 2008 clubs through Nov. 13, but they may discuss non-salary issues with other teams.

Wood, who stayed in Chicago with a one-year, $4.2 million deal last November, saved 34 games in 2008, his first year as a closer. Injuries are always a concern with Wood, but he made it through the season relatively healthy, a midseason blister aside.

Contract length may be the determining factor in Wood's negotiations. While the Cubs have Carlos Marmol waiting in the wings, other teams in need of ninth-inning help could offer Wood a longer deal.

Rest of the article is Here

I really hope we can keep Kerry. He is a class act and a great pitcher to have on this staff. It's a pity he was unable to remain a starter..

Oh and Lieber filed for free agency as well, but I think he is most likely done.

Interesting Peavy Trade Idea

I cannot find the exact article where this information came from, but Rotoworld is reporting from a source at the Chicago Tribune that if the Cubs were to go after Peavy it would be a monster trade consisting of perhaps a Derrek Lee and Adrian Gonzalez sweep.Take it for what its worth:

Braves GM Frank Wren has reportedly told the Padres they will not give up Tommy Hanson in a trade for Jake Peavy.

It'd be really difficult for the Padres to do a Peavy deal with the Braves without getting Hanson or Jair Jurrjens back. Peavy may prefer Atlanta as a destination, but it won't matter if the team decides to be stingy. The Cubs and Dodgers could still be fits. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs may make a proposal that would also include Derrek Lee and Adrian Gonzalez, something that could net the Padres a number of talented youngsters (Felix Pie and Sean Marshall would have to be in the mix). Also, while the Padres would certainly rather see Peavy out of the NL West, they're better off making a good deal with the Dodgers than a bad one with the Braves.
Source: Rotoworld.com

Again, its rotoworld so this is neither a rumor nor actual proposal, just an interesting trade idea. So what is your opinion, is Adrian Gonzalez a better fit than Derrek Lee? What would it take to pull off this deal? Do we have enough prospects to satisfy the Padres demands?

Personally I think these kind of trades are reserved for MLB 2k8.

I bascially decided that it would be fun to have a thread that shows the achievements of the Cubs this year that you NEVER thought would have happened. I mean a bunch of intresting and unusual things occured this season for the Cubs. I'll start. Would you have believed me in Spring Training that:

1) On the final game of the season at Wrigley, the despised Jim Edmonds of the Cardinals would become a Cub hero and the fans would stand to honor him?

2) Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds would be our platoon for Centerfield, not Felix Pie and Sam Fuld?

3) Ryan Theriot would finish the season close to hitting .300 and stay healthy most of the season?

4) Bob Howry would be virtually useless throughout the season?

5) We don't need Brian Roberts?

6) Soriano would be injured for two months and STILL hit 30 HR?

You Continue!

I do not understand why they cannot go to a neutral site such as St. Louis. They could even have it in their home state of Texas in Arlington since the Rangers are out of town this weekend. Another blunder by Selig here (or conspiracy!). Besides, they have to make up two games, and the Cubs have only one off day. I don't want the Cubs playing a double header on Monday..

Seriously, does Selig think it is worth it to send the Cubs through this?!?!

When asked if he would want Brett Favre on the Bears offense, he stated:

‘‘Not right now,’’ offensive coordinator Ron Turner said today when asked if he could envision the future first-ballot Hall of Famer in a Bears’ uniform this season. ‘‘Not with what we have. I like our quarterbacks. That’s not to say he’s not a great player, he’s one of the greatest players of all time. I love him. I love watching him. He’s a great player.

‘‘Not at this time and in this situation. We’ve got two good quarterbacks.’’

Um...So either he is joking and not wanting to release any information or he is completely CRAZY. He'd honestly pick Grossman and Orton over Favre? It amazes me that this guy still has a job.

The feel good story of the winter just got even better.

The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Chad Fox from Double-A Tennessee. To make room for Fox on the 25-man roster, right-hander Kevin Hart was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. In a separate move, the Cubs outrighted right-hander Juan Mateo to Single-A Daytona.

Fox will wear uniform No. 44 and be available for tonight's game in St. Louis. Chicago's 40-man roster is at 38 players.

Hopefully he won't be a bust and be able to contribute. Looks also like Mateo is pretty much done as a MLB player. Hart will be up soon, IMO.

Well its about that time of year that I make my annual trek up to Washington DC to see the Cubs take on the Nationals. Since there is a new park and everything, I was wondering if anyone has been to it and where are the best places to get food, do stuff, etc. My seats should be pretty good since they are in the third tier front row and I should get a good look at the Capitol Building.

Oh and of course, holler if you will be there a s well!
