Kansas City has arguably undergone the biggest changes of any team in the NFL this year. They've changed not only on the field personnel but even more importantly their off the field personnel. The following is why I believe the Chiefs can compete with anybody they play in the 2009 campaign...

It's been a hot topic of debate for months amongst Chief fans whether the team should draft Aaron Curry. Some feel KC should go the prolific route and draft Michael Crabtree (although that camp has been less vocal recently), others feel the pick should be used on top offensive line talent such as Jason Smith from Bayor or Eugene Monroe from Virginia, an ex-teammate of Brandon Albert. Many also suggest the best route would be to trade down.

I believe the Chiefs should stand pat at #3 and draft Curry for the following reasons:

• Defense wins Championships- Look at this past Super Bowl. The Steelers had a great defense that came up with a tide-turning score late in the first half. Granted, they didn't play all that well late, but they were the reason that Pittsburgh was there in the first place. You need a good offense, but defense is the key. Another great example are the Rams of 99'. Everyone remembers their offense prowess, but their defense won them the NFC Championship and the Super Bowl. Not to mention they were ranked third in the league.
• By most people's estimation, Curry is the best player in the draft- Right now Kansas City needs talent in a lot of different areas. Wide Receiver and Left Tackle are spots of less need at the moment. We already have Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe to catch the ball, and with the emergence of Albert last year and the signing of RG Mike Goff, this team is a RT away from having a very strong O-Line. A quality RT can be acquired in the later rounds.
  
• Haley is an Offensive Coach, we need to counter-balance that with top notch defensive talent- Haley has already proven he can "coach em' up" on the offensive side of the football with most notably his work in Arizona. However, he has no coaching experience with the other side of the ball. If the Chiefs have average offensive personnel, Haley can make them into a solid, effective unit. I don't know if this is true the opposite way. Pioli needs to provide Haley with good, athletic players on the defense, making not only his but Pendergast's job much, much easier.

Those are my points as to why KC should go defense and draft the best linebacker available. He has great speed and size, he's strong and has incredible character by all accounts. I'm not going to site all the draft history in the last decade specific to position, because I don't think that helps at all. Each case can and will be completely different.
