Pro Football Focus writer Steve Wyremski: Those targets actually, Stanford … your WR catch percentage against was 42.4%. When you compare that to other corners in the league that ranked you #2 behind only Darrelle Revis. How do you accomplish that? Stanford Routt: [Laughs] I don’t know if that’s a trick question or not. To be frank, you just go out there and play football. When you’re trying to win, go to the playoffs, be the best team in the AFC West, and be the #1 defense and secondary in the league, it’s not really that hard. You go out there and make plays. Whatever you do, you just try to separate your man from the football. Furthermore, playing alongside Nnamdi [Asomugha] when you know you’re going to be thrown at because team’s stay away from him, it’s something you take as a pride factor. It’s something you take as pride and take a little bit as a disrespect and [you play] with a little bit of a chip on your shoulder. It’s motivation. What’s so weird and what I think people misconstrue or overlook is … I just finished my sixth year in the league, but in a lot of ways I just finished my second year. The only years I started were my third and my sixth. A lot of people were surprised by my catch rate and I feel like this year I really didn’t do anything special. I didn’t meditate before the games or do anything out of the ordinary. I just went out and played football. I think what everybody was surprised about was how strong I finished within the rankings of burn rate and lack of touchdowns I got beat on. People fail to realize that I never really started other than my 3rd year in 2007. When people are surprised at how [I] did this year … what were they comparing it to? I went a whole two years without starting. That’s how it goes, though.

Compares To: TOM BRADY-New England … Head coach Charlie Weis must have thought he was experiencing deja vu with Quinn, a clone of his Patriots pupil. Both are very detail-oriented pocket passers with deceptive mobility. Preparation is the key to their success, along with the ability to make progression reads and locate their secondary targets. With the tutelage Quinn has received under Weis, those experts who have been recently downgraded Quinn in favor of JaMarcus Russell might regret if they bypass the "safer" Notre Dame talent for a player (Russell) who might be a better athlete, but is a kindergarten "toddler" in the game-planning department when matching up against Quinn's wits.

Kansas City Chiefs: Romeo Crennel When the Chiefs hired Crennel as their head coach, everyone was happy, from the front office to the players. Crennel certainly won't have as long a leash as Fisher -- he'll have to show significant progress in the next two years. He does have the full support of the front office at the outset, though, so the players know he is in charge. The key hire for Crennel will be who he chooses to become his offensive coordinator. Will it be Jim Zorn from the current staff or former Dolphins coordinator Brian Daboll?

11

Brian Daboll's name is now "hot" on Twitter to take over the offensive play calling helm, let's examine how effective he's been while being an offensive coordinator: 2009 - Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator 32nd in total offense (260.2 ypg), 29th in points per game (15.3), -12 turnover differential, 23rd in Time of Possession per game (28:54) Leading Passer: Brady Quinn - 136/256 (53.1%) 1,339 yards, 8 TDs, 7 INTs Leading Rusher: Jerome Harrison - 194 carries, 862 yards (4.4 ypc), 5 TDs Leading Receiver: Mohamed Massaquoi - 34 catches, 624 yards, 3 TDs 2010 - Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator 29th in total offense (289.7 ypg), 31st in points per game (16.9), -1 turnover differential, 27th in Time of Possession per game (28:21) Leading Passer: Colt McCoy - 135/222 (60.8%) 1,576 yards, 6 TDs, 9 INTs Leading Rusher: Peyton Hillis - 270 carries, 1,177 yards (4.4 ypc), 11 TDs Leading Receiver: Benjamin Watson - 68 catches, 763 yards, 3 TDs 2011 - Miami Dolphins Offensive Coordinator 22nd in total offense (317.4 ypg), 20th in points per game (20.6), -6 turnover differential, 10th in Time of Possession per game (30:37) Leading Passer: Matt Moore - 210/347 (60.5%) 2,497 yards, 16 TDs, 9 INTs Leading Rusher: Reggie Bush - 216 carries, 1,086 yards (5.0 ypc), 6 TDs Leading Receiver: Brandon Marshall - 81 catches, 1,214 yards, 6 TDs These numbers aren't very encouraging if the Chiefs want a big-time offensive coordinator that can turn around a dismal 2011 offense. One could argue that Daboll has had to coordinate some bad offenses in his three seasons, and the stats of the teams he's been apart of have improved, but even the positive signs don't shine much optimism on his potential hire.

Cassel ready for some consistency at OC

23

Watching very closely the decision by Coach Romeo Crennel on an offensive coordinator is QB Matt Cassel. In the last four years with two different teams, Cassel has worked with five different offensive coordinators – Josh McDaniels (2008 in New England), Chan Gailey and Todd Haley (2009 in KC), Charlie Weis (2010) and Bill Muir (2011)

KC Star: Cassel never felt ‘entitled’ to be Chiefs’ starter

14

"There’s competition every year,’’ said Cassel, who will turn 30 in May. "If you play this position, there’s always competition. You’re competing against yourself, you’re competing against somebody else. Whoever they bring in, you always compete and you always have to go out and try to get better. "I look at it that way. I look at it from a football standpoint. I’m a football player and I’m always trying to get better and trying to do whatever I have to do to put the best product on the field. From year one to year two, our team made great strides. We won the AFC West and we went to the playoffs. Last year, we were in the middle of the playoff race and I broke my hand so there’s not much I can do about that.

Possible Crennel-Mangini Reunion

8

Now I would expect Crennel to phone Eric Mangini and gauge his interest in joining the Chiefs as defensive coordinator. Mangini was Crennel's first choice to join him in Cleveland as Browns coordinator in 2005, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick pulled a power play and swayed Mangini to stay with a promotion to defensive coordinator. Belichick made the move while competing in the AT&T National Pro Am Golf Tournament in Pebble Beach, Calif. Crennel was like a dad to Mangini during their time together with New England. The big question in Kansas City is whether GM Scott Pioli would allow Crennel to hire Mangini. Though they worked alongside each other in Cleveland and New England under Belichick, Pioli and Mangini are not exactly bosom buddies.

"We definitely want to keep this nucleus today. I feel like we're just starting to jell as a team," said cornerback Brandon Flowers, who already has played for three head coaches in four seasons. "It would be a big step going forward if we can keep him." For his part, Crennel downplayed one of the more intriguing story lines that'll permeate Chiefs-related conversation for the next little while. He didn't beg for the job or lobby for it. That's not his style. Instead, he let other voices - including those that chanted his initials-inspired nickname, "RAC! RAC!" in the locker room - make his point. "When I got this job," Crennel said, "I told you that I was going to do the best I can and then let the chips fall where they may. And I think that's still the case. "The people who are going to make the decisions, they see how I've operated, and whatever decision they make, they're going to make it. ... We'll see what happens."
