Casual Hoya The False Narrative About Georgetown’s Recent Postseason Track Record

I have thought a lot about the loss yesterday and I've read some things and heard some things about how the program has a trend of losing in the tournament and how there is clearly something fatally wrong with the program because of it. This upset me and I wrote a rambling, stream-of-consciousness rant reacting to that talk.

I am an unabashed Georgetown homer and an ardent supporter of John Thompson III. I think he is absolutely the right person to lead Georgetown’s program and 4 straight tournament exits to double-digit seeds has done nothing to change my mind on that. I’m saying that up front here to point out my obvious bias as I dig in against the wave of folks (both in the national media and among the Georgetown fan base) that are building narratives about Georgetown’s lack of success in recent NCAA tournaments and using that as an indictment of everything that JTIII has built at Georgetown.

Coach John Calipari turned 53 Friday. "Well, two years got vacated, so I’m 51," he said.

This has them slated to play Iona which would probably be a nightmare. That Iona team is really good and would be a real tough out.

Obviously, this means very little, but yesterday he tweeted: "What's the weather like in Philly these days lol" and has tweeted at Jimmy Rollins a bunch of times in the past couple days. Could be...interesting?

Casual Hoya Possibly Pointless FanPost: Assistant Coaching Roles and Moving Forward

Note: This is entirely irrelevant if Mike Brennan doesn't take a head coaching job this offseason.

With Princeton coach Sydney Johnson moving to Fairfield and Georgetown Assistant Mike Brennan rumored to replace him, that brought up a long discussion of who might replace Brennan if he does move on. This got me thinking about what has been missing the past couple years (aside from postseason wins amirite?) and where the team needs to improve going forward. If Brennan does take the Princeton job (or any other head coaching job), the next assistant coaching hire is certainly a chance to improve and change the direction of the program.

This seems like a good place to mention that I am firmly in the Pro-JTIII camp. I do believe some changes need to be made and Coach has to get better and I also recognize that he should not have a permanent free pass. However, assuming that he is willing to adapt and work to improve going forward (something I believe he'll do) I still remain convinced that he is the right coach for the program at this point.

Blog Huddle Embedding YouTube Videos In FanShots And FanPosts

Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed an influx of emails to our Support inbox (support@sbnation.com) mentioning difficulty embedding YouTube videos in FanPosts and FanShots. This is happening because YouTube has switched their standard embed code to include iframes, which we currently strip out of FanPosts and FanShots.

We are in the process of changing that process so that iframes are not stripped, but in the meantime, there is a workaround. Step-by-step screenshots using the awesome video here are posted after the jump.

It's important to note that this does not affect the URL import of videos into FanPosts. If you use that feature to import YouTube videos into FanPosts, you've likely not even noticed this issue.

This one is a bit outside the Beltway, but still pretty worthy of some attention. A player Annapolis Area Christian School hit a 3/4 court shot to win a game early in the week and then had an opponent do the same thing less than a week later.

Both awesome shots, unbelievable that one team was involved in both.

Landon is ranked 6th (just behind Paul VI who lost to McNamara 74-59), Episcopal is ranked 9th, Bullis is ranked 15th and St. Stephen's/St. Agnes is ranked 19th.

With Landon having beaten McNamara, look for them to leap Paul VI next week if they stay undefeated this week.

At the risk of changing the subject from last night's epic, here is a video of Roy doing some MMA workouts. He used them to shed 23 pounds this offseason. Pretty great write-up of his season here.

Casual Hoya Detroit Bad Boys Previews Greg Monroe

A couple of the writers at Detroit Bad Boys are previewing each player on the Pistons leading up to the season and yesterday they got to our boy, Greg. They can best be described as cautiously optimistic (though Mike Payne is actually very optimistic), but some of the commenters are really down on the pick and on Greg's game. I thought this particular part of the preview was especially apt:

It's quite possible that Monroe ends up a better pro than he was a college player.  Logically, some of his weaknesses should iron themselves out now that he's out of the Princeton offense, and no longer his team's primary option.  Specifically, we should see a lower turnover rate, better shooting efficiency and a slight uptick in rebounding rate.  At Georgetown, Monroe operated out of the high post, where rebounds are harder to come by.  As the Hoyas primary scorer and distributor, forced shots and bad passes certainly serve to stink up your numbers.  I'm not suggesting a major turnaround for Monroe, only to say that going from the 1st to the 3rd option on the floor might make him a more efficient player.

That seems pretty spot on to me. The pressure to be number one all the time will be removed so he'll be able to stick more to his sweet spot.

Also, a lot of the negative comments about Monroe stem from his lack of athleticism (somewhat true), lack of aggressive play (also, kind of true) and his lack of motor (decidedly not). I left a comment saying the questions about his motor were silly and that he was a hard worker who busted his ass in games, but I still don't really understand where this "lack of motor" talk comes from. That just bothers me for some reason.

This is over a week old now and it is very possible that I missed the discussion on it round these parts, but I hadn't seen it and thought it was definitely worth a read and talk about it. I can't say that there are many (any?) new revelations about Werth in this article, but it confirms a lot of what we already suspected, chiefly that Werth is not your average MLB Player (or person).

Was there talk of this that I missed?

Barking Carnival How do you give back to your University?

Relax, I’m not asking for your money. I am interested, however, if the dollars that you spend supporting UT in various ways (tuition, attendance at events, donations) are given of your own volition, or if they are coaxed out of you through cunning and deceit, like a wife coaxes her husband into admitting that her friends are hot or that she has a large ass so that she can use it as leverage against him later.

It is in the latter way that I feel our dear McCombs school of business goes about getting at my hard earned money, and later justifying this extraction as some sort of finder's fee for providing me with the degree that enabled me to earn said wages in the first place. The McCombs school has made it very easy to express your gratitude by stopping by here http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/development/howtogive/ for a Ticketmaster-like shakedown.

However, the school is aware that my internet time, at a mere nine hours a day, is scarce and therefore precious. Diamond vs. water paradox, hello! This is the business school we're talking about. Knowing this, the b-school has imagiprenuered other ways to make it convenient for me, the graduate, to fund escalator repair and the installation of flat-screen tvs in the restroom that show announcements and ask me if I am cut or not.

The answer is phone calls. To my personal cellphone number. At night. Every six weeks.

Since I still have family in the Austin area, whenever I get a call from a 512 number I just assume one of them happened to change their phone number again to avoid a long string of match.com hookups that just won't let it go. But no. It's some freshman or sophomore holed up in a phone bank tunneled somewhere beneath the Burger King in the Atrium of the business school.

Imagine my surprise when a nubile young 18 year old girl or boy calls me before I've even submitted my credit card information! At first they ask me how I'm doing, if I like Dallas, and how awesome my generic accounting job is. Whenever somebody wastes my time, I like to flip the tables on them and start wasting their time.

So after I go on and on for 20 minutes about how I'm just now gaining my freshman fifteen, 10 years late, and how accounting is great but what I really want to do is direct, I finally take a long enough breath that they have a chance to ask me if now is good time to give a gift, say just $200, so that the business school can make much needed improvements. Improvements such as supplying disposable puppy potty mats to the students locked in the viet cong like call center where no, they cannot have it their way despite being oh so close to vaguely jack-in-the-box-esque tacos.

I always say no. I am a business major, but to me it seems at this point the only thing the business school needs more money for is to make it rain in the foyer of the Ford Career Center. If I'm going to give money to the academic side of the university, it will be to the school of social work or some other school that really needs it.

Mainly, UT gets money out of me through what I spend on attending athletic events, UT apparel, and parking tickets.

So what about you? Any Joe Jamails out there?

Blog Huddle Tips From Around The Network: Rec'ing Comments

A couple of weeks ago, we started a series of posts on Blog Huddle highlighting a feature of our platform and how to use it. The first tip was on adjusting the layout width and judging by the reaction on Amazin' Avenue and beyond, was informative and helpful.

Today, I am going to highlight rec'ing and flagging comments. There are many posts from around the network on commenting and navigating comments, but I am going focus on posts from Liberty Ballers, our Philadelphia 76ers blog, and Pension Plan Puppets, our Toronto Maple Leafs blog, for their sections on rec'ing comments.

The highlights after the jump.

Casual Hoya Recruiting In The One-And-Done Era

Marquis Teague, a 5-star point guard and the number 2 rated player in the class of 2011, is announcing his college choice today at a 1:30 p.m. EDT press conference. This particular announcement has no specific bearing on Georgetown as we never really recruited him and he is choosing between Kentucky and Louisville (and is expected to pick the Wildcats). But after reading this post from Card Chronicle, I couldn't help but see the parallels between Louisville's recruiting difficulties and our own.

Jimmy Rollins Placed On 15 Day DL With Calf Strain

Charlie Manuel appeared on Sirius XM Radio on Wednesday and told hosts Jim Duquette and Kevin Kennedy that Jimmy Rollins' calf injury has been deemed "between a Grade 2 and 1" calf strain.

"He's definitely going to be out some time," Manuel told Jim Duquette and Kevin Kennedy on Sirius XM radio. "How much, I don't know, but he's hurt pretty bad."

Manuel used the word "tear" when discussing Rollins', which is accurate in the sense that a Grade 2 strain involves some partial tearing of the calf muscle. A rough recovery time is three-to-six weeks, although each case is different.

The Phillies followed with a press release minutes later officially announcing that Rollins has been placed on the 15 day disabled list.

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. To take his spot on the 25-man roster, infielder Wilson Valdez had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

An MRI taken yesterday at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital revealed a Grade 1/Grade 2 strain of the right calf. Rollins suffered the injury during pre-game warm-ups moments before Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals. The DL stint is retroactive to April 13.

We believe it to be a mild to moderate strain and we’re hopeful it will be a two-to-four week recovery,” said Amaro. “As in all of our injuries, precautions will be taken so that Jimmy is 100% when he returns to the field.”

Juan Castro will replace Rollins at shortstop and is expected to hit 8th, while Shane Victorino will take over lead-off duties while Rollins is out. Rollins had started hot for the 6-1 Phillies, hitting .391 and taking a surprising seven walks.

Pedro Martinez, Phillies In Talks On Possible Midseason Reunion

Philadelphia Phillies' GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. spoke with ESPN Deportes Monday and said that the Phillies are speaking with Pedro Martinez regarding a possible return to the Phillies at some point this season. Martinez signed with the Phillies in July of last year and joined the Major League club in August.

Martinez was hardly in his Cy Young Award-winning prime, but still pitched well going 5-1 with an ERA of 3.63 in his nine regular season starts before going 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in three postseason starts, both losses coming in the World Series at Yankee Stadium.

Martinez was looking for around $5 million this offseason, an amount the Phillies are unlikely to offer, but that was the number he asked for last year as well, prorated for when the Phillies signed him. Look for this story to evolve over the course of the Spring.
