"The Griz had resisted offers for the second-year player. But Thabeet is now being viewed as an asset most likely to be traded in order to augment the Grizzlies."

The Internet rumor mill mentioned the Kings as a player in the sudden trade drama surrounding Carmelo Anthony of Denver drama. The Kings have salary cap space but have not made any trade inquiries, according to Kings president Geoff Petrie.

Cousins had an excellent workout with the Sacramento Kings, grading out as the best shooter to visit Sacramento in the predraft process. He hit 78 percent of his shots in the workout, including a lot of pick-and-pop attempts.

Favors graded out as the far better athlete, but the Kings, who have the No. 5 pick in the draft, believed Cousins was a more advanced player. He showed Sacramento officials more range than they thought he had, consistently hitting the 17-foot jumper. The Kings are considering several players, but Cousins could be difficult to pass over.

Sactown Royalty I Will Survive (The NBA Draft)

To the tune of Diana Ross Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive: (oops!)

First I was shocked
I was petriefied
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by our side
I spent many drunken nights
thinking how the draft had done us wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so I'm back
from Arco's parking space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face

We changed our stupid coach
so you could throw passes in the key
If we had been second
you'd be drafted by Petrie

Go on now go walk out Arco's door
just turn around now
and hope you're picked at number 4
Or else you'll hurt me, with that twinkle in your eye

you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love the Kings
I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
Got all my fandom to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

It took all the strength I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent many drunken nights
Watchin' the Kings and listenin to Peaches
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person
still in love with Rubio
and so you felt like dropping in
just to do a Q&A with me
now I'm saving all my loving
for someone who's drafted by Petrie

Hey, hey!

A quick summation of Rashad McCants's thoughts during the course of the game:

Ball! Here! Now! I'm open! I made it! You didn't believe in me! Hear me roar! When they score, all it means is you can pass it to me now! Ball! Here! Now! What do you mean, "scoreboard"?

On an interesting note at the end...

"Abdur-Rahim announced his retirement last week, concluding a 12-year playing career, but not stepping away from the organization. Basketball president Geoff Petrie said he plans to add the 2000 Summer Olympian to the Kings' coaching staff or use him in another capacity."

An in-depth, 2 page article was written by Sam Amick from the Sacramento Bee on how Martin has been improving his game over the summer. It also includes a wonderful video of Kevin during his practice sessions.

"Everybody says they want to force me left, but I want them to force me left," the Kings shooting guard says with a bit of bravado inside a dank gym at the IMG Academies earlier this month. "I love going left."

But the research – a sheet filled with statistics Martin hands to his personal coach, David Thorpe, on this muggy morning – shows it's not quite that simple. Martin may have gone left 62.19 percent of the time last season, but his efficiency when heading that direction was well below the rate when he headed right.

He settled for the midrange jumper 63.25 percent of the time as opposed to 38.89 percent on the right side, which matters because the numbers also prove scoring at the rim is a greater certainty than burying pull-ups from any range.

This is just one nuance of Martin's game, but it is the lesson of the day."

"According to Petrie, the pick has declining lottery protections for the Rockets. Should Houston fall into the draft lottery (pick Nos. 1-14), it retains the pick next season. The protections decline from there, though specifics of the progression are not known."

Sactown Royalty Thompson a sleeper?

Thinking back on tonight's first round Kings pick, the immediate reaction of Kings fans has mostly been "Who's that guy?" or just clear outrage.  Maybe Petrie has once again pulled a hidden gem out of the NBA Draft.  After all, no one knew about Peja or Martin when the Kings decided to pick them.  So, after several beers, I've calmed down and decided to convince myself that Jason Thompson will also be one of those hidden gems.

Thompson did average about 20 points, 12 boards, and about 2.5 blocked shots during his senior year, but a common criticism is that Thompson played in a lower division, thus, weaker competition.  He was, however, matched up against Michael Beasley on Nov 25, 07, when Rider played against Kansas State.

In the game vs Kansas State, Thompson scored 24 points on 9 of 14 shooting and grabbed 7 boards in 39 minutes of play, matched up against Beasley.  Beasley had 13 points on 5 of 11 shooting and 10 boards that game.

Complete Boxscore of Kansas vs Rider

Also, MSNBC wrote a long article on Thompson, saying Thompson might be the top sleeper in the 2008 NBA Draft.

So, before jumping to conclusions, I'm going to let this one ride out.  Maybe it was in the best interest of the Kings to draft a solid player who's shown he can provide big numbers, rather than a talent with high risk.

Sactown Royalty Lawson drops out of draft

According to Rivals, Ty Lawson, will drop out of the 2008 NBA Draft and return to North Carolina for another year, along with fellow teammates Wayne Ellington, Danny Green, and Tyler Hansbrough.  Lawson was largely projected to be picked in the late first round in most mock drafts.

"The process of testing the waters has given me valuable information about my draft status, and I have decided it would be better to return to school," Lawson said in the release.

Lawson drops out of draft

So, I guess that puts more pressure on the Kings to pick a PG with their #12 pick, since there's not many talented PGs projected later in the draft.
