Pretty nice return on investment from 1.5 Million from the state.

Body of Email after the jump

Lt. Governor Kinder Presents 2009 Tour of Missouri Economic Impact Study
Third annual race proves to be most successful
BRANSON, MO - October 1st, 2009 - Lt. Governor Peter Kinder, chairman of the Missouri Tourism Commission and Tour of Missouri, Inc., presented economic impact results from the 2009 Tour of Missouri during a meeting of the Missouri Tourism Commission today in Branson.
"The 2009 Tour of Missouri was met with tremendous support all across our state and I am proud to report that the numbers prove the same," said Lt. Governor Kinder. "Over 4,000 volunteers worked tirelessly to showcase Missouri across the globe as a world-class tourist destination. We were blessed with great weather through the entire week and, even though we visited smaller towns on this year's revised route, spectators from all across the world helped us surpass last year's success to once again make the Tour of Missouri the largest sporting event ever held in our state."
Throughout the week, 500,000 spectators were estimated to have watched the race at one of the 11 host cities or somewhere along the 600 mile route which passed through many communities in Missouri. In 2008, an estimated 434,000 spectators saw the Tour at some time during the seven stages. In 2007, there were nearly 368,000 spectators who watched the race.
The total economic impact by spectators during the seven-day event was $38.1 million, that's up from $29.8 million in 2008 and $26.2 million in 2007.
"This year's race was a huge success thanks to the tremendous efforts of each of our host cities, corporate sponsors, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Department of Transportation and spectators from across the world," Lt. Governor Kinder said. "I am very pleased that for the state's investment of $1.5 million in the Tour of Missouri, we were able to return over $38 million to communities in our state."
During the course of the seven day event, the average out-of-state visitor spent over $220 per day during their visit. In planning their trip, 83% of non-Missourians said the Tour of Missouri was the reason they came to spend time in Missouri. The average out-of-state visitor spent more than four days in the Show-Me State.
The Tour of Missouri also showcases Missouri to a global audience via live coverage on the Internet and on television.
This year, the Tour's official website, www.tourofmissouri.com, received hits from visitors in 153 countries and territories. An estimated audience of 5.6 million people watched nightly highlight shows on the Versus television network and an estimated 1.4 million people watched highlight shows on Fox Sports Midwest and Fox Sports Kansas City.
Following the 2008 Tour of Missouri, the International Cycling Union, the sanctioning body for professional cycling, raised the ranking of the Tour of Missouri to a prestigious 2.HC ranking, making the event one of the top five races outside of Europe. The increased international appeal helped attract seven pro tour teams who competed just weeks before in the Tour de France.
The 2009 Tour of Missouri economic impact study was conducted by IFM Sports, an international leader in sports marketing and research. IFM is a global company based in Germany with American operations based in St. Louis, MO.
IFM Sports conducted the economic impact study for the 2008 Tour of Missouri. They have also provided similar reports for groups such as: Major League Baseball (MLB), the International Cycling Union (UCI), the International Tennis Federation and the National Basketball Association (NBA), among many other professional sporting organizations.
At today's Missouri Tourism Commission meeting in Branson, Lt. Governor Kinder pledged his support for a 2010 race and urged fellow commissioners to also support bringing the event back for a fourth year.
Contact: Gary McElyea
573-751-1088
Gary.McElyea@ltgov.mo.gov

From TourOfMissouri.com

Looks like Mark Cavendish will headline the ToM in September. He will have lead out man Mark Renshaw with him as well as Michael Rogers, Michael Barry, Marco Pinotti and George Hincapie although George may be a last minute scratch depending on his collar bone at the time.

Columbia-HTC is showing a strong team as they are the official clothing sponsor of this years Tour and will also have Cavendish Featured on many of the media materials for the race including the Tour magazine.

Here is how ToM breaks down:

"The race begins in St. Louis on Monday, September 7, Labor Day, with a 10-lap, 75-mile circuit race that will be fast and flat and favor a sprinter taking the leader's jersey. On Tuesday, September 8, the race will transfer south to Ste. Genevieve with a 112.4-mile road race to Cape Girardeau. The terrain is hilly to moderate and features finishing circuits.

On Wednesday, September 9, cyclists will face their toughest challenge of the race, with a hilly 114.3-mile stage in the Northern Ozark Mountains from Farmington toRolla. After a short transfer on Thursday, September 10, the race will proceed from St. James to Jefferson City, with the circuit finish featuring a steep 300-meter uphill sprint to the finish.

Riders will be able make up time Friday, September 11, during the individual time trial at Sedalia with an 19-mile race against the clock around Missouri's State Fairgrounds. On Saturday, September 12, cyclists will race from Chillicothe to St. Joseph while hitting moderate to hilly terrain.

The weeklong journey through the Show-Me-State concludes with a hilly circuit through the streets of Kansas City, Sunday, September 13. The Kansas City circuit will feature two king of the mountain points with more than 3000 feet of climbing over 72 miles.

..Though a stellar world-class field was presented last year, the three-year-old race is expected to be even better as the Tour of Missouri was granted an upgrade to one of the top five-ranked events outside Europe by international and national federation's for cycling last month.

The upgrade has drawn top pro tour teams Astana, Cervelo Test Team, Columbia- HTC, Garmin- Slipstream, Liquigas, Saxo Bank and Quickstep, all recent Tour de France teams, of which won 14 of 21 stages of the world's biggest race. Domestic teams participating in 2009 include BISSELL Pro Cycling Team, BMC Racing, Colovita / Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light, Jelly Belly, Kelly Benefit Strategies, OUCH presented by Maxxis, and Team Type 1. Canada's top team Planet Energy rounds out the field.

The race will be contested over seven days and seven stages. There will be two circuit races (St. Louis, Kansas City), one individual time trial (Sedalia), and four point-to-point road races (Ste. Genevieve to Cape Girardeau; Farmington to Rolla; St. James to Jefferson City; Chillicothe to St. Joseph). Other team rosters will be announced this month. The race is sanctioned by USA Cycling and UCI, the international governing body for the sport." - From ToM Website.

Look for more on this race as it approaches. There will be a large contingent of PdC'rs there coverign the race from start to finish.

Fear The Armadillo!!!

My experience at the Tour Of California had a tension filled start as I was down with Strep for several days prior to my time to leave and it was a close thing as to wether I was going to be able to go or not. It is never a good sign when the doctor looks at your throat and says "hmmm that is the worst throat I have seen in a long time". Luckily it was early enough that I was able to get it cleared up before time to fly the coop.

I have all my photo's posted online now in my Photobucket account so feel free to browse. Tour Of California - A note that these are the raw photos, they have not been edited just resized for quicker uploading.

After the flip I will give a rundown of my experience as well as showing a few of my favorite photos.

Day 1 (Stage 4) This was my fly in day, the race was a good 4 hours north of Santa Barbara at this point so I had to settle for a cold beer and the sunset on Goleta Pier.

And The Pier Itself

All in all not a bad way to spend your evening as I waited for Nikki's plane to Finally make it in.

Day 2 Stage 5

Stage 5 finished just within a 2 hour or so driving range so we determined that we could make it after meeting and having a great breakfast with Gav in downtown Santa Barbara. An extremely nice place by the way. Great to get to meet you Gav!! We drove north to Paso Robles for the finish and met up with Jimbo. It was the classic Marco Polo as Nikki talked him in over the phone to our location just after the finish line. We talked for a little and then Jimbo headed off to make use of his VIP pass. Scored us some beer as well!!! Great Job!! Cav came screaming across the line in the first..

Jimbo met with us after the race and may have let the VIP thing go to his head a little...or maybe it was the beer...you decide.

We then went to The hitching Post in Solvang for dinner and it was awesome. See Nikki's post for pictures of that. After that we made the short 45 minute run back to Santa Barbara for soem much needed rest before the big Solvang Stage.

Day 3 Stage 6

We had a secret route into town from SSmith that I must admit as we drove it would have left most people very doubtful if it had not come from a reliable source. As we turned off the freeway onto a "road" it looked like we were going onto someone's driveway. This promptly dropped us into a twisting downhill over the same driveway type of surface. It turned out just like he said though and took us right into downtown by the back way and close to the action. Almost everyone has written about the TT and the After party so I will just suffice it to say that it was everything they said and a lot more fun. Here are soem TT pics that I liked best.

Dominique Rollin

Floyd Landis

Frank Schleck

Jens!

Svein Tuft

This has to be Thor Hushovd's biggest fan, she moved a course marshall out of her way when he started coming up the hill so she could yell for him. I was so busy watching her and her enthusiasm that I missed getting a shot of Thor.

Tyler Hamilton

For the Green Fans - Alessandro Vanotti

Andy

Carlos Sastre

Cavendish Looking very cool before he starts the hill.

Christian with a happy smile about to preride the course

and then totally focused on it

Of Course the Versus Crew was there

Day 4 Stage 7

Stage 7 saw us make a run down to Santa Clarita for the start. Nikki, Steph and Lyne took turns running down the riders for autographs in the book. They were all amazing. In between her charity work Lyne actually managed to get some ground work in for more of her great articles.

The guys rolled out in orderly fashion to the cheers of yet another HUGE crowd.

After the stage started the PdC crew enjoyed great food and beer for lunch and then split up to go our seperate ways. I headed south to catch the finish that had cicuits around the Rose Bowl. A break dominated the day and took it all the way to the line.

The Astana led peloton chased hard

The circuit included some small climbs like this one right after the finish line

Day 5 Stage 8

The crowds gathered in Rancho Bernardo for the start of the final stage. Due to time constraints I only made it to the start but it was worht it as I heard my favorite quote of the whole week. I was standing by the fence waiting when an older lady came up to me and started asking questions about the race. The best was by far "What team are we on?" to which I responded it depended which team was your favorite. She thought about this for a minute and then said "So what team is Lance on?" to which I had to point out he was on Levi's team.

Somewhere at home I have a picture of Steve from the Tour Of Kansas City Race this year where he came in 12th overall behind the likes of Brian Jensen and Brad Huff. All guys almost half his age.

Steve Tilford has sewn up his place in cyclocross history — but he isn't done

Perched on the edge of his couch, Steve Tilford performs minor surgery wearing nothing but a pair of jeans and a silver medal of St. Christopher that rests just below his neck.

The late-December afternoon casts dim light through the window of his single-story Topeka home. A plastic bag with a biohazard symbol stamped on the front spills its contents on the coffee table. The kit is missing a needle, the one that Tilford is gingerly using to thread stitches through the leg of a black-and-white English setter......"
