Center, Philip Blake to have private workout for Bill Callahan on Monday.
A pet cat of mine and I havn't seen him mentioned much on BTB. A second or third round target I'd imagine. It might be a little high with our 2nd round pick and I don't know if he'll still be available when we pick in the third.
Nicks or Carr?
Two of the most talked about players on BTB, Carl Nicks and Brandon Carr. With the Cowboys having money to spend and JJ wanting to make the fan base happy, I do believe one of these two players will become a Dallas Cowboy in 2012. Both would fill a major need, both are of similar age, both are in the prime of their careers, both will cost similar money. Probably not possible to get both, but one is doable. So which one? For me its an easy choice... Carl Nicks is where I'm spending my money! Allow me to explain.

2011 A Success?
Is 2011 a success? I guess it all depend on your definition, and expectations. I am an optimist at heart and I still hold out hope that they will get hot and go on a run. However my common sense side tells me 9-7 is a very realistic outcome for this team. They have the Giants twice, and it will probably come down to who makes the least mistakes with these two evenly matched teams. Regardless of the records they do not match up well with the Eagles and that will be a tough game. I do expect them to beat Tampa. So I could easily see them splitting the last four games and finishing at 9-7.
Depth and Injuries!!!
The single scariest thing going into this season is the lack of "proven depth" on this team. I'm all for a youth movement but they need to be smart about it.
AOA
There has been a ton of love for AOA on here in the last year, looks like he is really struggling. I found the following on the Cowboys blog. When asked for the biggest surprise and biggest disappointment of camp so far
CBA Thoughts
I do believe they will get this thing worked out sooner or later. Neither side can exist without the other, and there is way too much money to be lost on both sides if there is no football. After all, this is all about money, nothing else.
Don't be fooled by other issues you hear about, it's the money. It kind of pisses me off these people are so lucky to be in these positions and they don't act that way. I think about how lucky they are to do what they love and get paid for it, or in the owners' case make money from it. It's millionaires, arguing over more money. Like they need it.
Surprised?
Should you be surprised by the predicament the Cowboys are in? Greatly disappointed yes, but surprised probally not so much. This team has struggled with focus and execution even going back to Parcells. There is not a lack of talent but its always a missed block, a penalty, a dropped pass, a blown coverage, a turnover, always something. They make it very diffucult for themselves, and have only been winners because of the talent. But you knew sooner or later it would catch up with them. The most frustrating thing is this is a team wide problem. You really cant say get rid of so and so because everybody has a little piece and it all adds up. Haven't you ever worked for a place and things are just as they are because that is the company "culture". Well i think that is what has happend in Dallas with this group of playes and coaches. Its just the company culture. Something has to change, this will never be a championship team and how much longer will the window be open. But what? I think it needs to starts with Jerry. I cant even fault him because if I owned the team I would want to be running the show just like he is. But I think its time to hire a GM. Someone to change that culture. Time to step back and let someone else take over. Wade is a great defensive coach, but probably not a great head coach. I actually like JG's offense but his play calling ability is questionable, and he really struggles to make in game adjustments. As does the whole coaching staff actually. Its time. This is the last chance for this staff and they are down 0-2 . Its going to be a hard road back. Ride out the year, hope for the best (you never know says the fan in me) and clean out this staff after the season.
What's missing?
A few things became evident to me over the last 2 weeks...
1. You cant blame Romo , this year.
2.From a talent stand point, we are as talented as anybody in the league
3 WTF is missing?
Its has to be the intangibles.
The talent is there, as much as everybody bangs on the coaching they are not doing a bad job. At some point you just have to blame the players. Key penalties, missed field goals, missed tackles, a missed block, a dropped pass, it all adds up. The players are not executing. You cant tell me we were not in a position to win(or had a chance to) in any of our losses except Green Bay. The coaches are not perfect but they are good enough to put the team in a position to win every week. The players are just not making plays. If you watched the San Diego game and thought there was a huge difference in talent or coaching, then you watched a different game than i did. San Diego executed better, and made more plays. Period. We didnt loose because Wade sucks, Romo sucks, Ware got hurt, or any other excuse. We just didn't make the plays. We are capable, the coaches put the guys in position, and they have the talent, just didn't get it done. Maybe they are just not winners. And it hurts me to say it, I love this team!! But I have to be realistic. I pray they prove me wrong. It would be the best tasting crow ever!!
Is Roy Williams even #2 ?
At this point I have seen just about a seasons worth of Roy Williams and I'm not sure he is even the second best receiver on the team. Austin has clearly emerged as our # 1 receiver, and I don't think Williams is any better than Crayton, and I think given the oppertunity Hurd would be as productive. You could even argue Williams doesn't have as much value as Hurd and Crayton because of their special teams play. And I just have a gut feeling about Ogletree. I guess the jury is still out on Williams, but something is missing for sure!!!!
Glass half full!!
With all the Romo sucks, fire Wade, fire Garrett, posts I thought to take a look at things from a different perspective. Whats gone right? I don't think the sky if falling. We are 3-2 and lost both games to teams that are 5-0. We also did not play our best football against either but still had a chance to win both games. I don't think we've hit our stride yet. But anyway lets get back to the positives. The special teams looks greatly improved, and with the signing of Rossum maybe it becomes a strenght. Miles Austin can play, so can, Jenkins, Scrandrick, Choice, Jones(if he could stay healthy) Sensenbaugh is an upgrade also. Ratliff is top 5 at his position in the league, Ware is off the snide, Brooking is playing at a very high level, Newman is having a solid season, James is haveing a solid season. I've got news for everybody, even with all his faults Romo is in the top 10 Qb's in the league. I guess my point is that we are as close to being 5-0 as we are to being 0-5. The difference between winning and loosing in this league is not a vast margin. This team is just a couple plays, a few bounces, a few breaks and a little luck from 5-0. It is not a bad team. Wade Phillips is not an idiot, Garrett is not the anti-christ. And for god sakes stop with the cut or bench Romo stuff. Thats ridiculous. I think we will regroup, adjust, and play better coming out of the break. I have to believe!!!!

Observations
There will be two way to look at today's game. Some will say more of the same sloppy Cowboys team,(and their right) some will look at it and hope this lights a spark, and thier right. I hope the latter comes true. Here is what I see. Is there anybody who thinks Austin should not start over Crayton when Williams comes back. I think he proved today that given the oppertunity he can make bigger plays than Crayton. Time to let him start. Has any one seen Ken Hamlin this year? That is starting to look like a very bad contract. Bobby Carpentar is a bust. Flozell had another bad game. Two false starts, one hold, and at least three times beaten by his man to distrupt a play. Time to give him a little help in critical situations, you just cant trust him. Anthony Spencer played well. I think the coaching staff is miss handling Barber's injury big time. I guess they would rather have him at 50% for 15 games, than 100% for 13. I can't tell you what they are thinking. I think it is an easy desicion to go with Choice after watching the two. Barber just isn't healthy. Our deffense is not very good right now. Thank God for Ratliff!!! I know the coaching staff can only do so much and the rest is up to the players to execute, but I can't help feeling we were outcoached here also. The thing is, as the team stands right now it is not a championship team. There are way to many issues. Now I do believe there is enough talent to do some damage, but two thing must happen that havn't in a long time. First the coaching staff must make the proper adjustments, second the players must execute. I'm sorry to say I don't have confidence that either thing will happen consistantly enough to allow this team to win. I HOPE THEY PROVE ME WRONG!!!
Cowboys look the same!
I hate to admit it but this looks an awful lot like the same Cowboys team that we've seen the last few years. I think we have some flaws but a talented team that isn't to far away. I am starting to believe that coaching is the main problem. Now like I said we have some flaws, at first glance
1.Play-makers at the WR position, we have a couple nice 2's, 3's and 4's, but nothing close to a number 1 reciever. These guys are not getting open. And as you saw in the Bronco's game you can load up on the run and single cover us and we cant make you pay. This is a copycat league so expect to see that every week until we start making people pay. Or is it the scheme that is no good?
2. I know we don't have anything better (so were stuck) but Flozell is killing us at left tackle. He is good for one hold, one false start, one sack, and 3 or 4 pressures that causes bad throws every game. These always seem to come at critical times to boot.
3. I think that our defense is good enough to win with but if I have to pick a flaw I'd say an overall lack of playmakers. Ware and Ratliff are at an "All Pro" level and the only constiant playmakers. Newman, James, and Brooking, are good solid starters capable of playing at a Pro-Bowl level. But the rest of the deffense is very average.
I think Wade Phillips is a really good deffense coach (probally not 10 better in the league) , and you can win with him and his deffense. I just don't think he is a good head coach. But Jason Garrett has done a worse job in my opinion. He started out on fire, but once the league figured him out (about 12 games in to his first year) he has struggled. Its a punch and counter punch league and he never figured it out again. His play calling, game managment, and whole scheme in general is not working right now. Can he adjust? I just dont think he put players in the position to succeed. He doesnt use thier strenghts.
On to Romo, I think if you polled Nfl GM's they'd tell you he has above average athletism, above average arm, above average mobilty, and (even though he hasn't shown it this year) above average accuracy. From what I've seen he also seems to be smart enough. So whats missing? Again look to Garrett. Romo needs someone to finish developing him. I dont think he will develope any further under this coaching staff. Mike Holgram seems like the best fit to do this, given how he harnessed Favre. If this season continues as usual, Jerry will make changes next year. Let's all pray he doesn't hand this thing over to Garrett. Our window is open now, and we cant afford to make another coaching mistake.
