* Real comfortable with 3-4, helping other guys with it
* Nolan is straightforward and to the point
* Likes playing NT, will be double-teamed a lot

* Where I'm going to be on the field is still up in the air
* I and DJ are working at several positions
* Now it's more about power and explosiveness than strictly speed
* Strictly working on LB, haven't played safety
* Played with Braxton Kelley at every level since middle school
* Give it your all so you don't disappoint veteran leadership

Norv Turner the best Charger coach since Don Coryell?

My sensationalist headline aside (obviously I'm not a Bobby Ross fan), Bill Williamson's latest throws Norv a little love. Key stats from his article:

Here are a few facts that show that Turner, a noted quarterback guru, is not the head coaching disaster some believe he has been in San Diego:

After just two seasons, Turner is tied for the most playoff victories in team history (3, tied with Don Coryell and Bobby Ross).

The Chargers are 12-2 under Turner in December and January, and 9-0 under Turner in December.

The Chargers led the AFC in scoring with 27.4 points per game, second overall in the NFL.

The Chargers led the NFL with the highest average per pass play.

The Chargers also ranked 3rd in yards per play.

Quarterback Philip Rivers set team records and led the NFL with 34 TD passes (Dan Fouts had 33 in '81) and a 105.5 passer rating.

Rivers' 100.6 passer rating over the last 27 games is the highest in the NFL over that period (includes five playoff games): 17-10 record, 51 TDs, 19 INTs, 63.5 completion percentage.

I agree that Norv doesn't get the respect he deserves, but I guess starting a pre-season Super Bowl favorite at 4-8 will do that for a guy.

*title changed to minimize jinx effect*

The SD stats junkies out there might get a kick out of this site: Cold Hard Football Facts Quality Stats

On offense, the Chargers are near, or at, the top in all categories. Particularly interesting is this bit:

Passing Yards Per Attempt has typically produced the greatest correlation to success of any single statistic since we began studying Quality Stats in 2005.

The 2005 Steelers led the league in Passing Yards Per Attempt and won the Super Bowl.

The 2006 Colts led the league in Passing Yards Per Attempt and won the Super Bowl.

The 2007 Patriots led the league in Passing Yards Per Attempt and went 16-0 before losing in the Super Bowl.

Yet this year, the Chargers, at a mere 8-8, lead the league in Passing Yards Per Attempt....

Hope this holds true, since the Steelers rank 20th, and the Titans and Ravens rank 17th and 18th respectively.

On defense, the Chargers are in the top 10 in the overall "Bendability Index," although they rank with in the bottom third when dialing in on the pass defense (Defensive Passer Rating) and run defense (Defensive Hog Index) individually -- go figure.

Ken Moll from Scouts Inc. (I heart Scouts Inc., despite their association with ESPN) has a decent discussion of The BeAst's technique and what he'll face with Barber and Tampa Bay.

Intro paragraphs:

The art of the double move is tough to master and often an underestimated skill, but Denver Broncos wide receiver WR Brandon Marshall is one of the best in the league at executing it and he has already made several defenders look bad this season.

Marshall does not have outstanding deep speed but he is an excellent route-runner with great balance and foot agility, and he understands the nuances of the position such as head fakes, changes in speed and the use of strength to gain separation. He is also a matchup nightmare for opposing cornerbacks at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds.

Full article

Jim Johnson has the Eagles defense playing creatively aggressive. Notice how creative blitzing causes Pittsburgh to get surprised by a four man rush.

It's the kind of play calling the gets the most from its players. Except for the safeties, I don't think the Eagles talent level as a whole is that much better than Denver's. I'd love to see what they could do with this kind defense coordination.
