Mile High Report The Greatest Denver Bronco Team: Wide Receiver

Lionel Taylor

Two down, plenty more to go. The MHR Greatest Bronco team of all time shapes up like this so far:

Quarterback: John Elway

Backup: Jake Plummer

Running Back: Terrell Davis

Wide Receivers (3):

It is now time to find out who will be catching passes. Wide Receiver is a hard player to judge and the top three receivers will be getting the nod to be on the squad. You need to vote for who you thought was the best and I will use that to reflect the votes of who was the best. Here are the candidates:

ROD SMITH - 1995-2006

Rod Smith was undrafted and signed as a college free agent. After being released by New England, the Broncos signed him. He appeared in 183 games and started 158. He was selected to 3 Pro Bowls in 2000, 2001, and 2005. He was the only undrafted player to ever surpass the 10,000 yard mark. He is 15th in NFL History in receptions and 16th in yards. His first NFL Catch was a 43 yard touchdown against the Redskins. He had 8 1000+ receiving yard seasons and 2 100 reception seasons. He was a large part of both Broncos Super Bowls. He has more catches yards and touchdowns than any undrafted receiver anywhere. Multiple surgeries ended his career.

Bronco Stats:

849 Receptions

11389 Yards, 13.4 YPC

68 Touchdowns

After the first part of the series, quarterback, the first(second I guess) member to the Broncos all time first team. So far the team shapes up like this

Quarterback: John Elway

Backup: Jake Plummer

Running Back:

It is now time to add the next part of the offense, the running back.

The Broncos have had a lot of great running backs in their time but only one can be chosen for the all-star team.

Mile High Report Denver Broncos Trade CB Cassius Vaughn for Colts FB Chris Gronkowski

DENVER, CO - OCTOBER 09: Cassius Vaughn #41 of the Denver Broncos runs the ball in for a 55 yard touchdown after making an interception against the San Diego Chargers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on October 9, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

John Elway announced via twitter today that the Broncos have agreed to a deal with the Colts to trade corner back Cassius Vaughn for Colts FB/TE Chris Gronkowski. Elway had this to say about the movie:

Our team has a lot of depth in the secondary and this an opportunity for us to add a quality fullback to our roster.

Gronkowski is a 6'2 240 pound undrafted full back. He was signed by the Cowboys in 2010. He then signed on with the Colts for the 2011 season playing in a full back role for both teams.

He was played 21 games gaining 17 yards on five carries and 35 yards on seven receptions with one touchdown.

Vaughn was a part of a crowded corner back group that will have a lot of competition come training camp. Vaughn was a college free agent in 2010 and had 22 tackles with one pick that he returned for a touchdown.

Mile High Report The Greatest Denver Bronco Team: Quarterback

The Broncos have enough of a history that if you compiled their all-stars through the years into the 24 greatest by position, you could come up with a pretty incredible team. What MHR does for me is learn the history of the team. With much help of all the staffers on the site, I want you guys to decide who the best 24 Broncos are of all time.

I think it is pretty safe to say that the greatest quarterback for the Broncos, possibly in NFL history, is John Elway. I do not want to take the chance that somehow the poll gets skewed and we have Elway not win the poll so starting in the quarterback spot is John Elway.

Deciding this is hard.....there are some players who might have better stats than others career wise but I am looking at it as who did the most for the Broncos in their time here.

I decided we will vote on who the backup should be. Lets look at the candidates.

CRAIG MORTON - 1977-1988

Denver Stats

64 Starts

Record 41-23

11895 Yards

74 Touchdowns, 65 Interceptions

Morton was a 6'4 215 pound QB. He was a first round pick by Dallas in 1965, fifth overall. Morton was the first quarterback to start for two different teams in the Super Bowl and the first time Denver reached the big game (Dallas being other team). Morton was enshrined in the Broncos ring of fame in 1988. The Broncos lost that Super Bowl to Morton's former team, the Dallas Cowboys. In 1977 and his first year with the Broncos, he won NFL comeback player of the year after having a good year and taking Denver to the Super Bowl. Morton is second all time on the Broncos passers list.

Mile High Report Ryan Clady and the Broncos Engage In Contract Talks

Photo

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports the Broncos and left tackle Ryan Clady have begun contract negotiations.

Clady is entering his last year of his rookie contract after being a first round pick by the Broncos in 2008.

Clady was a Pro Bowl tackle in his first two seasons but injured his knee in the offseason on 2010. Clady has never missed a start in all four years though and will be a huge part of helping Peyton Manning get off passes.

Mile High Report CB Drayton Florence Agrees To Terms With Denver Broncos

The Broncos continue to address their secondary this off-season now signing their second veteran CB, former Chargers and Bills corner Drayton Florence.

2012 will be Florence's 10th season. He was a 2nd round pick in 2003 by San Diego and spent five season there until playing one in Jacksonville and his last four in Buffalo.

Florence has 17 career interceptions with three last season and 41 solo tackles.

This adds to the defensive backfield that lacked depth last year. The Broncos added former Saints CB Tracy Porter earlier in the off-season which gives the Broncos the following corners: Champ Bailey, Tracy Porter, Chris Harris, Drayton Florence, Syd'Quan Thompson and Cassius Vaughn and the recently drafted Omar Bolden.

Florence visited with the Titans on Tuesday but left without a contract. Lindsay Jones stated that Florence visited the Broncos last week. Once again, the Broncos have triumphed over the Titans in a free agent battle.

Adam Schefter confirms the deal is a two year $4.5 million deal with $5.5 in incentives. Jason LaCanforna is saying the incentives are only $1 million.

Mile High Report Which Running Backs Will Make The Denver Broncos?

DENVER - OCTOBER 24: Running back Knowshon Moreno #27 of the Denver Broncos celebrates his touchdown run in the second quarter against the Oakland Raiders at INVESCO Field at Mile High on October 24 2010 in Denver Colorado. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

The Denver Broncos in 2011 had the number one running game in the NFL. Thanks to the strong running play of free-agent signing Willis McGahee who ended up becoming a Pro Bowl back, the Broncos were able to win games by safe conservative executed football.

Peyton Manning's best years statistically in his career came when he threw the least amount of passes in his career. The best season Manning had was 2004 where he threw 497 passes, his second lowest amount of passes in a season. That equals out to 31 passes a game.

I do not expect the Broncos to have the number one running game again in the NFL for multiple reasons, but I still expect it to be top 15 not because it will be worse, but because it will not be relied on as much. In 2004, the Colts ran the ball 46% of the time and had the number fifteen ranked rushing game in the NFL. You start to hear today that running backs are not as large as a commodity as they use to be, and to some point, it is true, but also, it is hard to win without being able to run the ball.

It is hard to do Colts and Broncos comparisons because it is two different teams but we can still do Peyton Manning studies because it still is him. We have seen several QBs put up good numbers at Manning's age.

If what I said above doesn't show how important a running game is to Peyton Manning, this will show the other side of it. In 2010, Peyton Manning threw a career high in passes of 679! That is an average of 42 per game, about 11 more than his 2004. The difference in yards? 143yards was the difference in 182 extra passes. The Colts also were the 29th ranked run game. In 2010, Manning also threw an interception 2.5% of passes compared to 2004s 2.0%. 2004s yards per completion was 13.4 compared to 2010s 10.4. Huge difference considering Manning completed an extra 1.3% of his passes in 2004.

So who will be the Broncos running backs to guide Peyton Manning back to his top form?

Mile High Report Brian Dawkins Retirement Presser Notable Quotes

LONDON ENGLAND - OCTOBER 29: Brian Dawkins of the Denver Broncostalks to the media prior to the start of a team training session at The Brit Oval on October 29 2010 in London England. The Denver Broncos will play the San Francisco 49ers at Wembley Stadium on October 31. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

The biggest leaders on the Denver Broncos has decided it is time to call it quits.

There were no tears. Just Brian being Brian. The greatest thing about this all is he was able to be at peace with his retirement and was not forced to. Here are some of the things said:

ON HIS DECISION:

"Today was a lot better. I'm at peace with the decision, so it's more of a joy to be able to see these guys."

HEALTH OF HIS INJURED NECK

"My body feels good. It really does. My neck, that nerve area is cool, nothing's wrong with it," he said. "My strength is back where it was and my knees, things don't ache like they do during the season when I'm walking up and down the steps."

ON THE OPTION OF RETURNING

"For them to open the door the way that they opened the door for me when I got here, I was a guy coming off my 13th year and a lot of people were saying I should retire them. They opened the door and said, Listen, this is your home, and gave me free reign to be me. They gave me that opportunity to come here and just be, and it's been a blessing to be able to play for another organization that, to be honest with you, I feel loved. That's important to a player"

Mile High Report Draft Week Monday: Elway Speaks

Photo

Only three days away folks.

The building of the new era Denver Broncos will go under its second draft under John Elway. Elway spoke today about various positions and draft needs.

NEED AT DEFENSIVE TACKLE

We don’t feel as bad about our tackles as everybody else does," Elway said. "I think that we feel okay there and Ty Warren will be back coming off an injury and (Kevin) Vickerson is coming back and then we have some young guys in there where we feel like we’ll be okay.

Interesting. To the fans, defensive tackle is a major need and I am sure the front office knows that it has to be addressed. I always say 90% of what you hear this week is smoke but I am really starting to be convinced that we do not go after a defensive tackle at twenty-five.

GETTING DEEPER AT CB AND MORE PASS RUSH

"We struggled all last year against anybody that spread us out. That is the thing," Elway said. "Every team has needs. It’ s just a matter of the impact of the people you can find to help solve that need.

"You can never have enough good corners; you can never have enough good pass rushers. There is no question, corner is another spot that is very vital if you’re going to be good on the defensive side because of where the game is going and the amount of spread offense that we’re seeing now you have to be good in the secondary.

But, you’re only as good as your pass rush too. You have to combine both of those. Obviously our pass rush is better than it’s been, but we have to get better when people spread us out."

The Giants have done that well drafting pass rushers all the time. The Broncos did miss it when one of the top guys were hurt but I still believe the key to our pass rush has to be up the middle.

ON IMPROVING ALL AREAS OF THE TEAM

"You can look at every position that we have on our team and we can get better everywhere. You can look and see we have a lot of depth on the offensive lines, the tight ends — we’re young there. You can look at every position and say, ‘OK, they probably have a need there.’

"I think the thing is that everybody looks at us and when you look at us and the NFL at a whole, every team looks at their team the way we look at ours and everybody has holes and is trying to fix holes and get better at different areas. You can look at all the different ones and bring them all up and try to get better at every position."

"As I said last year, you have a lot more misses in my mind when you draft to need,"

Things will get very interesting this week. I am starting to feel like the front office is not happy about our secondary, especially with the retirement of Brian Dawkins. Could use some more veteran players back there (*cough* Asante Samuel *cough*)

Mile High Report Denver Broncos History: The 2006 Draft

DENVER, CO - AUGUST 20: Defensive end Elvis Dumervil #92 of the Denver Broncos pauses to pray after a game against the Buffalo Bills at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on August 20, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. The Broncos defeated the Bills 24-10. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

After the 2005 season, the Broncos had some questions going into the offseason. The Broncos had a great season going 13-3 until eventually losing in the AFC Championship game to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Jake Plumber had a poor performance in that game and the relationship with the fans was diminished a little but his job was assumed to be pretty secure heading into 2006.

This draft turned out to be one of the best ones the Broncos have had in the last while even though the biggest names out of it do not play for the team anymore.

Here was the draft class of 2006:

Mile High Report Denver Broncos Release CB Andre Goodman

Friday afternoon, Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post reports that the team released veteran corner back Andre Goodman.

Andre Goodman has played three seasons with the Broncos after signing as a free agent in Josh McDaniels first season. Goodman totaled 40 starts in his three years with Denver and grabbed seven interceptions, missing only one start.

Goodman last season had two interceptions that were part of large wins. Against the Jets he returned an interception for a touchdown to give the Broncos a lead and against the Vikings he picked off Christian Ponder to ice the game.

The move does not come as a surprise to most as the team had signed younger corner back Tracy Porter to take the backup spot to Champ Bailey with Chris Harris playing the nickle role. The Broncos still reportedly have an interest in the corner spot and have Dre Kirkpatrick on their short list according to a report.

Mile High Report NFL Announces Multiple Rule Changes

The NFL announced several rules changes for the 2012 season as the Spring Owner's meetings wrapped up in Florida. here is a summary of what's new:

OVERTIME RULES

All games that go to overtime shall be decided now on the same rules as the playoffs. Two games last season went to overtime and were ended by a field goal on the first possession. Now, if a field goal is kicked on the first possession, the other team will receive the ball to either a) match it and give the ball back, or b) beat it with a touchdown for the win. However, if the team that starts with the ball scores a touchdown, then the game is instantly over and the other team does not receive a possession, just like we witnessed in the playoffs with the Demaryius Thomas touchdown.

BOOTH REVIEW

Last season, all touchdowns were to be reviewed automatically with no coaches challenge needed. The league has now added all turnovers to that list.

TOO MANY MEN

All too many penalties will now be whistled down as soon as the play starts instead of proceeding to finish the play. This was the result of the Giants having too many on the field when the Patriots were trying to tie the game.

LOSS OF DOWN

Kicking a loose ball after the play will now result in a loss of down.

CRACK-BACK BLOCKS

Crack-back blocks that are committed on players two yards outside of the tackle are now illegal.

Those are the new rules. Should any of them be different? Anything else you wish you would have seen?

Mile High Report ESPN McShay Releases Latest Mock Draft; Broncos Take Brockers

We are very close to April and we are less than a month away from the NFL Draft. For me, it does not even seem that far away since we have been so busy with free agency and the Manning/Tebow fiasco. Suddenly before you know it, the draft is close. Last year it took so long to come because every day we had to hear about litigation and...all that junk.

Todd McShay of ESPN is one of their draft experts and released his most updated mock draft today. Like most of us, McShay see's the Broncos needing to fill a major hole in the middle of the Broncos defensive line. Rumors have the Broncos trying to re-sign Marcus Thomas but right now we do not have a lot after Broderick Bunkley moved to New Orleans.

The Broncos have the 25th pick in the draft and McShay has the Broncos taking......

LSU Defensive Tackle, Michael Brockers. McShay had this to say about the Broncos taking the prospect:

The interior defensive line is clearly the Broncos' biggest need, and Brockers could prove to be a steal at this point. He has a big (6-5, 323), well-proportioned frame and better mobility than his production indicates, and, with some coaching and time in the weight room, Brockers could become a force.

Brockers is someone I have wanted for months and I would be very excited about this pick. To be honest, we cannot be too picky about who we get for that position because its pretty light right now.

Mile High Report Is Mike Wallace The Last Missing Piece?

The Broncos really have changed the entire shape of the organization in the last couple weeks. Who would of thought, that after a playoff win with one of the most exciting plays in Bronco history, Peyton Manning would be our starting quarterback going into week 1 of 2012.

With Peyton Manning comes a lot of expectations. Rightfully so, the Broncos will be expected to win the AFC West again and probably further. This team won a playoff game with a less talented quarterback, it has to be possible to win more with arguably the G.O.A.T. right?

We all know there are pieces missing on this team. I myself do not expect us to make the Super Bowl this season, I just do not think we are quite there yet even with Peyton Manning. I do like some of the moves we made so far.

Caleb Hannie for me is not something worth discussing a whole lot, not because I do not like him, but because I hope we do not have to see him play for sixteen plus games. Capable back-up but not a take-over after Manning guy. I have never been a huge Tracy Porter fan but I think as a number two, he is an upgrade over the aging Andre Goodman. I am happy with the tight end improvement but was surprised to see us bring in two because I am wondering where the direction is going at that position. Both of the tight ends brought in are very capable of catching the ball so where does our mega-athlete who impressed in camp last year Julius Thomas fit in?

I think the Broncos are close, and it has to be fixed in a short window of seasons because today is Manning's birthday. (Am I the only one who still has not had it sink in yet that Manning is our quarterback?)

There is a certain Steelers receiver that will come at a price but would be one of the last missing piece on offense for this team.

Last season Mays played in all 16 games starting in 13 and making 67 tackles.

Joe Mays will compete with second year inside linebacker Nate Irving for the starting spot in training camp next year assuming that the Broncos do not pick up any other inside linebackers.

Adam Schefter reports the deal is for three years

Mile High Report UPDATE: Sources Say 95% Chance Manning Is Bronco; Contacted Broncos Tonight

The talk for the most coveted free agent in a very long time looks to be wrapping up within the next day or so. After spending the day with the Bronco management on Friday, Manning spent about six hours with Arizona on Sunday.

Everyone is expecting Peyton Manning to make his decision sometime Monday evening, the night before league-wide free agency begins for the rest of the league.

However, things are starting to become really interesting as this starts to wind down. Both sides media members seem to think Manning is there's but something new came out from a pretty reliable source out of Denver.

Vic Lombardi of CBS Denver tweeted tonight that according to multiple sources he has, that he has found out the following:

Again, sources telling me Broncos are still the favorites. Tells me 80%. Not my number, the source's number. Source hasn't been wrong yet.
Mar 11 via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

Lombardi also clarified that the only true source is Manning himself and that all this is guessing. Either way, there is never a boring off-season at Dove Valley.

UPDATE: 9:52 MT

Just heard from my peoples. Broncos now 95% confident he'll sign with Denver. Their number, not mine.
Mar 12 via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

Later in the evening, a tweet from Lombardi now says Broncos are 95% sure they will sign Manning. Again, nothing is confirmed until the real source, Manning, says so. But Lombardi later said that they are confident because Manning contacted Broncos tonight. However, other reports say they can confirm that they did not talk to Manning on Sunday.........Going to be a fun week.

Updates when they come!

Mile High Report Tim Tebow and Von Miller Selected To Represent The Denver Broncos In Madden '13 Cover Contest

Tim Tebow and Von Miller have been selected the represent the Broncos in the Madden 13 cover contest. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

With the success of two of the Broncos most exciting players, Tim Tebow and Von Miller, have been chosen to represent the Broncos in the Madden cover contest

. For the first time ever, last year Madden '12 decided to decide it's cover by a contest where fans could vote. Last year the bracket was 32 players, one from each team. (Except Seattle....there representative was the 12th man.....'nuff said)

This year EA Sports has doubled the bracket having two representatives from every team for 64 people. Voting does not begin until March 7th. It would be pretty cool to have a Bronco on the cover of Madden however, most of us have heard of the curse. The Madden Curse lives strong after last years cover athlete Peyton Hillis missed multiple games due to "injury."

Keep it in mind as March 7th approaches and vote vote vote! Maybe Tebow could be the one to break the Madden Curse

Lets have some fun.

If you were to put the curse onto one player, who would it be?

Mile High Report What Would It Take To Trade Up To Number Two?

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - FEBRUARY 26: Quarterbacks Andrew Luck of Stanford and Robert Griffin III of Baylor meet during the 2012 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 26, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

Now before you throw me off of the ship, remember I am a Tebow supporter and I am just speaking hypothetical. What if the Broncos decided they wanted to entertain the idea of trading up to number two to select either Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III?

Today Adam Schefter said that the Rams are indeed planning on trading their number two pick. The idea is that Cleveland, Miami, or Washington will trade up to that spot but you never know.

I am sure that some of our readers are interested in this.

It was said it will cost probably two firsts, a third and a fifth, That is a lot to give up which is why I am not THAT interested in it. But anyone who has seen the combine and seen Griffin play knows he is a great prospect.

I hope Tebow is the future of this team. I have his jersey, I have read his book and I have watched highlight videos over and over and over. I just wanted to entertain the thought and ask you guys.

Or maybe there is someone else at the number two spot you would want? YOUR CALL

What/Who would you be willing to give up to move up number two?

Mile High Report Did The Broncos Get Lucky? A Discussion Of The Broncos Wins in 2011

DENVER, CO - NOVEMBER 17: Tim Tebow #15 of the Denver Broncos is mobbed by his teamates after scoring the winning touchdown against New York Jets at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on November 17, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Garrett W. Ellwood/Getty Images)

Han Solo: "I call it luck"

Obi-Wan: "In my experience there is no such thing as luck"

You could not start a post any better! Star Wars quotes for the win!

Last night in my downtime, I chatted with MHR's very own Kaptain Kirk about various things. Anything Broncos of course ends up coming down to a Tim Tebow discussion. That conversation ended up talking about which of the Broncos nine wins in 2011 were "lucky".

Luck is hard to define. It is out of the ordinary. It is not planned. It is hard to explain what it is. It is sort of like pornography in a way. It is hard to say what is and what is not but you know it when you see it.

How much of it did the Broncos have? That is an interesting topic for debate.

Mile High Report Denver Broncos Sign Wide Receiver Jason Hill

CLEVELAND, OH - NOVEMBER 20: Wide receiver Jason Hill #83 of the Jacksonville Jaguars catches a pass in front of defenders D'Qwell Jackson #52 and Joe Haden #23 the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium on November 20, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Matt Sullivan/Getty Images)

The Denver Broncos have not waited to try and improve the roster that took them to the AFC Divisional Round in 2011.

After signing guard C.J Davis today, the Broncos added a a player to a group with many questions around it.

The Broncos added Wednesday free agent receiver Jason Hill. Hill played in Jacksonville last year after being released late in November, after new Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was fired.

Hill is a 6'1, 190 pound receiver who was drafted by San Francisco in the third round of the 2007 entry draft. In the 2007 combine he ran the second fastest 40 time running a 4.32. His rookie season he only played in five games due to injury problems.

Hill played at Washington State University. He scored 32 touchdowns breaking the school record and is second on the Pac-10 All Time list. He had 2,704 yards and 148 catches.

Hill is a big addition for the fact that the Broncos receiving group is thin due to Eddie Royal being an unrestricted free-agent.

Scouting Report (From SB Nation

Assets: Has elite athleticism and top-end speed, the needed ingredients of a pure deep-play threat. Is also very shifty. Runs routes well and can really take off if the defender misses his tackle.

Flaws: Has a history of inconsistency and doesn't always seem to be in-sync with his quarterback. Not a physical receiver and won't make the tough catch in heavy traffic.

Career Potential -- Speedy Receiver with great upside.

Also according to Rotoworld, Hill was released by the Jaguars due to problems with dropped passes and not being able to get open down the field.

2011 seemed to be the emergence of the tight end in the NFL. Several tight ends made a lot of big plays in key situations for teams changing the way offenses ran. Daniel Fells was the Broncos starting tight end. Should he come back?

OVERVIEW:

Matt Prater, a kicker out of UCF, was acquired off the Miami Dolphins practice squad. Prater just finished his fifth season in the NFL. The last four have been a full time role all with the Broncos. Prater is known for the very strong leg he possesses showing the ability to hit from 60 yards out and possibly even further due to the high altitude in Denver.
