Rany gives us his thoughts on all the happenings since he said "I'm done", including the Teahen trade, GMDM's coveting of players with low service-time and the training staff. It's a great (long) read. Savor it b/c he might not write again for a while.

2010: Reality

There are currently a lot of posts about the 2010 Royals and the roster moves they can make to compete next year. I just want to say that most of them are misguided and nothing more than wishful thinking.

My main objections to these post are with the following claims.

"The Royals can cut or trade Jose Guillen" No we cannot. He's owed a ridiculous $12 Million next year. Nobody else is going to pay his salary, much less give us any prospects for the pleasure. It's just not going to happen.
"The Royals should trade David DeJesus" Why in the world would we trade one of our best players who has a very favorable contract? Apparently these KC fans under-value DDJ. He's very dependable, durable and, dare I say, consistent. Since June, he's hitting .306/.377/.464/.841. He had a bad start to the season but c'mon, we need him on this team.
"The Royals will sign some free agents this off-season" Actually the Royals will probably reduce payroll this off-season -- I'd say in the neighborhood of $5 Million. I fully expect the Royals to turn to cheaper (ie internal) options for next years' roster. Say goodbye to two of Coco Crisp, Mike Jacobs and Miguel Olivo (probably Crisp and Jacobs) and hello to some minor leaguers. Same for the bullpen. Expect Glass to be pacing himself in 2010 and pooling resources for 2011 when the Jose Guillen debacle is finally off the books.

Let this be a reality check. I think the tighter budget will actually help Moore. There will be no more 2yr/$9MM contracts this off-season. If Moore thinks the Royals can contend in 2010, Glass is putting a stop to that with the payroll reduction. Even though 2009 started and ended well, there's no reason to think we can contend in 2010. I'm glad that Glass realizes this even if some fans and Dayton Moore don't.
