Stampede Blue Well deserved win for the men in charge

First I will start by saying that Manning has never looked so good. He dominated the best defense in the NFL today. His accuracy was incredible. Garcon and Collie looked like seasoned vets, their play was so great to see. When Manning actually has a decent defense around him he always comes through.

Stampede Blue Surprises in the running game

Does everyone else think the Colts have much to look forward to with the current running backs? If the offensive line improves its run blocking, this group has a lot of potential. I was a firm believer in the Colts drafting Donald Brown so the Indy could have a much needed tandem. I think he has does very well so far.

On a different note, Addai has really impressed me as of late. I forget which game, but I recall hearing that Polian was complaining about Addai dancing way too much. I was sick of it as well. However, it seems like he has started to hit his holes harder. I think criticism has brought out a much improved player.

Was anyone else really surprised by Simpson's running? I have not heard much talk about his runs against the Pats. The guy was running with some real good speed and toughness. While we have not seen enough to make conclusions, right now I'm sold on the decision of him over Hart and Ball.

Stampede Blue Barrett Ruud

I wanted to ask this in a post, since there are a million comments on that game thread. Is this talk for Ruud legit? I have not seen info for it anywhere else. That would be really sweet if they could get it done. The guy is a beast. Also, I think overall he is even better than Gary B. That would make this defense pretty scary. With this years draft class being thin, and the great OTs going early, he warrants a 32nd overall pick. Maybe it would just take a 2nd, but i doubt it. Ruud would be better than anyone else they would get at 32, and is still very young. I for one, would love for this to happen. Ruud FTW

Stampede Blue Things that have not been mentioned much about the first two games

Hello fellow Colts fans. I was posting on here often when the Colts were getting ready for the draft, but I have just been reading on here daily since then. I just wanted to mention a few things that I feel havent been touched on a whole lot the past couple weeks.

Does everyone else get more excited when Brown comes in? I was pulling hard for a running back before the draft and was very pleased with that pick. I believe in keeping it a tandem, but just hoping that we will start to see Brown in a few more plays a game than Addai. I just feel that his explosiveness and ability find holes has been evident.

I also would like to see more of Collie. He has made some really impressive 3rd down catches, but I'm ready for a big game from him. I hope the same from Garcon. I feel like the Colts offense will see the field much more this week, and I think they will make it happen with more looks.

Lastly, I'm really happy that I don't have to listen to the constant praise of Tom Brady for the time being. I'm sure it wont take much for writers to jump back on the bandwagon, but its nice to hear all Peyton Manning talk right now.

Stampede Blue The Colts upcoming season

My post has been discussed at times in many comments, but I would like to hear everyones feedback on this matter.

Many Colts fans differ on a draft strategy this year. My primary hope for the Colts is to find more balance in this years draft. Obviously Manning will be getting older and will not be able to provide as many incredible comebacks or off the charts numbers. He is still the best QB in the NFL, but will not be at this level forever.

My main hope is that we solidify our run defense and the running game. This has been touched on many times and is obvious, but I dont think some people realize how important it is. These are two areas we were very poor at last season. We can blame an unhealthy O-line or Ed Johnson, but these areas need to be addressed. Everyone saw last season, sure the Colts had many injuries, but they were bad in the trenches.

For the running game, I really think our O-line will be better. They have Lilja back and with 3 rookies who will be alot better with a year under their belt. However, I think everyone can agree that an OT is needed for depth and for Diem's replacement. So the line will be better, but not amazing. As a result, I would really like to see Moreno in the 1st or Jennings/Brown in the 2nd since our line is not spectacular. I have not given up on Addai, but I dont think he can carry the load on his own. Plus Carolina is a good example of how much an impressive tandem can do for an offensive. Jake Delhomme was their QB and they still managed to be 7th in the league in PPG. Another problem with RB is if Addai gets hurt again, The Colts 1-2 punch will be Lance Ball and Mike Hart. I do like these guys, but that would be equate to a pretty bad running game IMO. An impressive 1-2 punch will give Manning more options and make him less predictable. I think this will help him more than a 1st/2nd round WR that will likely be 4th on the team in receptions. There is alot of depth in this years class, and plenty of talent will be around after the 2nd.

I think Run D is even more important. I think Caldwell/Polian did a great job getting Coyer, and they plan on addressing this. Hopefully the Colts pick up at least a couple DTs in the draft. Jerry or Hood in the first would be ideal, because they could help a position that has been a problem for years. Im not saying we should just pick up a bunch of gap stuffers like Grady Jackson, but I think everyone can agree we were a little too small on the front 7 last year. Its not good to compromise speed, but when the DTs look like linebackers you are not going to match up well at all against 300 pound O-lineman. Our line was easily contained by the opposing line, which led to our linebackers getting picked off. We do need another OLB, but if the DTs can hold their ground, they are going to make these linebackers we have much better.

I really just dont want to sit through another year of watching teams run down our throats for an entire drive, which leads to Manning off the field and a tired defense. Or a sorry running game and special teams unit. This past year seemed like a much less dominant Colts team than what we're used to, and we would not have even made the playoffs if Manning didnt lead some great comebacks. I think if we want to see another Super Bowl, the Colts are going to have balance things out, and not just be good at passing and stopping the pass. But I think the organization knows that, judging by some new personel

Sorry for this long diatribe of things that have already been said, but I thought this was a post worth writing.

Canal Street Chronicles 2009 Mock Draft

Hi, I am a contributor to Stampede Blue, the SB Nation blogging site for the Indianapolis Colts. I am a huge fan of Purdue athletics as well. Obviously I am a big Drew Brees fan. I knew the Saints were destinated to be become an elite team when they picked him up. Since then, I have always always cheered for the Saints (as long as they don't play Indy of course). I follow the Saints quite a bit, which is why I picked them as my team to draft for in our mock draft. I figure this is the best site to determine who the Saints fans and organization really want in the 1st round of the draft. I believe the Saints do not pick again until the 4th where they have two picks if I'm correct. If we go to the 4th, I will take the best players available at positions all of you think are possibilities. So far I think Malcolm Jenkins is the most likely choice in round 1. I think Clay Matthews or Brian Cushing are also possibilities. Is Moreno very likely or a CB likely? From what I hear they are happy with Thomas and Bush at this point at RB. I appreciate your input.

Stampede Blue Jim Caldwell

I am relatively new to this site, and have only been posting for a few weeks. I'm happy that I found it, considering I now go to school in Kentucky and am surrounded by Bengals or Titans fans. Its nice to be able to talk with Colts fans. I'm sure this post has already been addressed after Dungy retired, but I was curious with everyones initial thoughts on Caldwell. We have yet to see him as our head coach, but I really like him so far. It seems like he is going to do great things in Indy. He already said he plans on making the defense bigger (but not abandoning the Tampa 2). I realize things went wrong last year with Ed Johnson, but it seemed like our D was getting smaller every year. We were getting pushed off the line badly. He also brought in our new special teams coach, which I thought was great. Special teams hurt us badly. I really liked the move to bring in Coyer as well. In my opinion, he will be a very tough coach, but one who the players like as well. In my opinion, Caldwell will be the kind of coach who often sleep in his office, and will make sure the Colts keep winning.
