ESPN:Best and Worst in Vegas so far

31

Justin Verrier, ESPN.com: Damian Lillard. The point guard came out of nowhere -- unless, of course, you daycation in Ogden, Utah -- but he has already made his presence felt in summer ball. He showed up Austin Rivers in his debut, then displayed a mature and efficient game, both on and off the ball, in his encore. Lillard also leads all rookies in scoring. Arnovitz: It shouldn't come as a surprise to see a No. 6 overall pick flourish in summer league, but Damian Lillard has been even better than advertised. He has been the one must-see rookie at the ball. He's the best pick-and-roll practitioner, the most exciting finisher in traffic, terrific on the break and engaged defensively.

Best fits for Deron Williams

16

Three-star fits It's not hard to craft a scenario in which this would work. Portland Trail Blazers: The Blazers have the cap space available, and could team Williams with LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum as part of their new big three. Portland is an alluring city with tremendous fan support and a rich NBA tradition. You can't rule them out on any major player. Plus, after Greg Oden, the Blazers deserve a break. Free-agent team needs: West

37

Portland Trail Blazers -- $23 million under the cap Coming off the books: Mehmet Okur ($10.9M), Raymond Felton ($7.6M), Hasheem Thabeet ($5.1M) Biggest needs: PG, SG, C Nicolas Batum (restricted free agent) figures to re-up with the Blazers, and they'll have plenty of cash to throw at him. The big question is whether Portland will chase other free agents this summer or wait until it finds out what talent it has with its two likely lottery picks. This is setting up to be a fascinating offseason for Portland, an organization that has to fill both the mouths of a passionate fan base and the holes of a porous roster. Going after Roy Hibbert and Brook Lopez might be an option, but they likely won't be freed from their current teams. Of all the free agents on the market, the one to keep an eye on is Nash.

ESPN Fact or fiction: Basketball analytics

+

Interesting ESPN discussion on the future of analytics in basketball. "As long as people still watch basketball players play basketball each night, there's no harm in having advanced statistics there to give them a better understanding of what's developing before their eyes."

Nicolas Batum continues rise in ranks

5

Steals plus blocks plus 3-pointers per game for Portland's Nicolas Batum in February. Taking advantage of increased minutes, Batum has averaged 17.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 1.6 blocks and 2.5 3-pointers in 12 February games. There simply aren't many players in the league who can offer this type of multicategorical goodness. In fact, Batum and Kevin Durant are the only two players who are averaging 1/1/1 in steals, blocks and 3s on the season.
