Wednesday Morning Skate: The Stanley Cup Final Finally Begins
The Stanley Cup Final begins tonight! LA takes on New Jersey in New Jersey for who will go down in history as the lowest seed to win the cup.
Game tonight:
Yeah, it's on the big-boy NBC channel!
Tuesday Morning Skate: Happy Birthday Nathan Horton (get well soon!)
It's Nathan Horton's Birthday! He turns 27 today. It's also Jason Allison's birthday but his incalculably slow movements have thrown off the math of how old he is.
No games until tomorrow. Uhhh....The CFL won't be on NFL Network this year, but should remain on ESPN3 (in SD because Canada doesn't believe in HD apparently). GO ROUGHRIDERS!
Monday Morning Skate: Happy Memorial Day, Everyone
I hope you don't have to work today, that would suck. Not as bad as giving up the game-winning goal in Overtime to the home team like Houser did last night, but still.
No hockey games on tonight that I'm aware of. Wednesday, the cup finals begin.
Friday Morning Skate: Game Sevens Are The Best Games?
(Editor's note: Cornelius wrote this last Friday and it is presented unchanged)
Games today:
- 7:00pm Memorial Cup Semifinal. Winner takes on the top seed. NHLNetwork
- 8:00pm Rangers v Devils (3-3) NBCSports
I just assume Rags/Devils is going 7. Memorial Cup Final is this weekend, Sunday night at 7pm on NHLNetwork.
Thursday Morning Skate: Mark Zuckerberg Bought the Coyotes?
(Editor's note: Cornelius wrote this on Friday and it is presented unchanged)
I guess all that Facebook money is good for something.
Games today:
- 7:00pm Memorial Cup Tie-Breaker Game (if 2 teams are tied for 3rd) NHLNetwork
Wednesday Morning Skate: Martin Brodeur is Retiring at the End of this Year?
(Editor's Note: Cornelius wrote this on Friday and it is presented unedited)
Heck of an announcement yesterday. All-time stat accumulator right there. Game today:
- 7:00pm Shawnigan Cataractes vs. Saint John Sea Dogs, NHLNetwork
- 8:00pm Devils v Rangers (3-2) NBCSports
Two games on! Cherish it while it lasts. Could be elimination time.
Tuesday Morning Skate: Jared Knight breaks Memorial Cup scoring records, hearts?
(Editor's note: Cornelius wrote this on Friday and it is presented unchanged, except for the Kings game tonight. That part seems important.)
Boy, that Rangers/Devils game was another snoozefest. Shame the Rangers won, tying up the series and getting back home ice. Kings sat back and watched.
Games tonight:
- 7:00pm Jared Knight's London Knights vs. Edmonton Oil Kings, NHLNetwork
- 9:00 PM Los Angeles Kings vs. Phoenix Coyotes, Game 5, NBC Sports Network
Looking forward to what Jared can do here.
Monday Morning Skate: Dwight King Scores Hat Trick to get Kings to Finals?
Editor's Note: Cornelius wrote this on Friday and it is presented unchanged, save for the above picture, which just proves how awesome Zdeno Chara really is.
Dwight King scored a Hat Trick on Sunday and the Kings are going to the finals for the second time ever. I don't think Kerry Frasier even missed him high-sticking a dude!
Games tonight:
- 7:00pm Dougie Hamilton's Saint John Sea Dogs vs. Edmonton Oil Kings, NHL Network
- 8:00pm Rangers v Devils (1-2) NBCSports
Friday Morning Skate: See you later, suckers!
Yep looks like the Kings won again. No hockey tonight. I'm off to Hong Kong for a week so I'm just going to write up what I assume will be the topic of the day and/or maybe something else for next week.
So enjoy your brief respite from my incoherent rambling. I'll miss you guys.
UPDATE:
GAME TONIGHT:
- 7:00pm Edmonton Oil Kings vs. Shawinigan Cataractes, NHLNetwork
MEMORIAL CUP WOOOOOOO!
thanks to Arenacale for the heads up. I have disgraced the morning skate.
Thursday Morning Skate: A Team So Great, It Doesn't Need to Win
USA takes on Finland today at 11:30am.
IIHF games:
- 6:00am Canada vs. Slovakia, NBCSports
- 8:30am Russia vs. Norway, NBCSports
- 11:30am USA vs. Finland, NBCSports
- 2:00pm Sweden vs. Czech Republic, NBCSports
Yep, all games are broadcast live!
And then at night,
Might be a good day to play hookie, wake up at 6am, and watch hockey all day long. NOT THAT I WOULD, mind.
Wednesday Morning Skate: Jeff Carter catches Dwight King in playoff Goal Scoring Race
Game tonight:
Tuesday Evening Skate: Can LA tie the all-time record?
LA has won every away game they've played so far in the playoffs. That's 6 so far. 7 is the record for consecutive away wins to start the playoffs. LA could tie that mark tonight. Are they going to, or is Phoenix going to find their dignity in the desert?
Tuesday Morning Skate: France could knock Slovakia out of the IIHF tourney
France is making a run with Merrimack Superstar Stephane Da Costa and Cristobal Huet. And why not?
IIHF Games, and what's at stake:
- 5:15am Canada v Belarus (Belarus must get at least 1 point or be demoted for 2014, Canada sits in top spot)
- 6:15am Norway v Denmark (Norway win could get them to face Sweden instead of Russia)
- 9:15am France v Slovakia (A French Regulation Win puts France into the knockout rounds and Slovakia out)
- 10:15am Czech Republic v Germany (Czech win cements game against Sweden)
- 1:15pm USA v Switzerland ()
- 2:15pm Sweden v Latvia (nothing at stake, Sweden locked into 2nd and Latvia out)
Should be fun.
NHL Game:
Definitely staying up late for this one.
Monday Morning Skate: Nickname Proposal: Dwight King is "Ozymandias"
It looks like the Kings will never lose an away playoff game again. They're now 6-0 away, 3-1 at home. That's a .900 total win%. That's pretty nuts. Can they be stopped? If not I hope they continue being unstoppable in the Finals.
Games today:
- 9:15am Belarus v Germany
- 10:15am Latvia v Denmawk
- 1:15pm Kazakhstan v Finland
- 2:15pm Italy v Russia
- 8:00pm Devils @ Rangers (0-0) NBCSports
Yeah it's pretty lackluster but I'll watch anyways.
Friday Morning Skate: Vote for Benoit Pouliot This Morning
Benoit Pouliot's beauty of a goal against the Panthers is up against some jerk from Buffalo in the TSN Play of the Year Showdown. Go vote for him now, voting ends at noon!
IIHF Games today:
- 9:15am Kazakhstan v USA
- 10:15am Italy v Czech Republic
- 1:15pm Finland v Canada
- 2:15 Russia v Sweden
Should be some good afternoon games and USA better be able to beat the Kazakhs.
Thursday Morning Skate: NHL on Break Until Saturday
Yep, it's pretty obnoxious. Thursday is even a traditional gameday. Of course the caps and rags are going to go 7 when everyone else goes 4 or 5. Jerks
IIHF games today:
- 9:15am USA vs Belarus
- 10:15am Denmark vs Russia
- 1:15pm France vs Finland
- 2:15pm Czech Republic vs Latvia
Yeah I'll be watching.
Wednesday Morning Skate: See you later, Pennsylvania!
Well the whole state of Pennsylvania is out with the Flyers getting embarrassed by the Devils (series-winning-goal scored by David Clarkson, assist to Ilya Bryzgalov). Video of that for the thousandth time after the jump.
Game tonight:
Could be the fourth elimination game in as many days.
Tuesday Morning Skate: AWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Your Western Conference Final is Kings vs. Coyotes, ladies and gentlemen. Sad to see Nashville and St. Louis out but that's how it goes. Now we wait for the east to hurry the heck up (they won't).
Game tonight:
7:30pm Devils @ Flyers (3-1) NBCSports
Flyers are without Giroux thanks to him deciding to pick Zubrus's head the other night. Great job, captain material.
Monday Morning Skate: America Beats Canada At Hockey Again This Weekend
Hey did you know that the IIHF worlds are going on? Yeah, they are! Of course, NBCSports has the rights and they think the year is 1980 because they aren't showing the game live. For example, the USA beat Canada 5-4 in an overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon. Here's what the NBC NHL Overflow channels were showing instead of this exciting game:
| NHL Network | NBCSports | CNBC | IIHF | |
| Noon | NHL Plays of the Week | Kentucky Derby Prep | Infomercials(!) | Game Starts |
| 12:30 | NHL 36: Patrick Kane | Kentucky Derby Prep | Infomercials(!) | first period ends |
| 1:00 | NHL 36: Patrice Bergeron | Kentucky Derby Prep | Infomercials(!) | second period |
| 1:30 | NHL 36: Nicklas Lidstrom | Kentucky Derby Prep | Infomercials(!) | end of 2nd/begining of 3rd |
| 2:00 | NHL 36: Mike Richards | Kentucky Derby Prep | Infomercials(!) | 3rd period ends |
| 2:30 | NHL Plays of the Week | Kentucky Derby Prep | Infomercials(!) | Team USA wins in OT |
Yep. NBC hates america just that much that they would rather sell "Insanity Workout" or whatever instead of showing our glorious boys in red, white, and blue dropping another win on Canada. A shame, really.
Friday Morning Skate: Devil of a Comeback
Man, Philly scored first last night and lost again. They're 1-4 when scoring first and 4-0 when trailing first. Gotta be getting close to some kind of record. At this point wouldn't you just put one in on your own net to start the game?
Game tonight:
Only one game. Which is good because I want to go see the Avengers tonight anyways.
Thursday Morning Skate: Tired of Balling
Holy crap, triple OT last night. That was cool.
Games tonight:
Tuesday Morning Skate: Kaminsky to the Max
As some of you may have heard yesterday, Dougie Hamilton recieved the Max Kaminsky award for OHL Defenseman of the year. Congrats, Dougie! Previous winners include Drew Doughty, Marc Staal, Denis Potvin, Al McInnis, and Manchester Monarchs defenseman Jake Muzzin
Games tonight:
Tuesday Morning Skate: Crown 'Em
The LA Kings are in the business of ruining hopes and dreams and its really fun to watch. Seriously, I'm pretty sure they go through everyday life like that.
- Want a pony, little girl? Willie Mitchell just murdered your pony in the neutral zone.
- Did you hope for world peace? Dustin Brown is too busy knocking the wind out of it.
- Wanted to see the northern lights? Matt Greene thinks you should consider flying medivac.
Vote Shawn Thornton for TSN Play of the year
Shawn Thornton's beauty penalty shot move is up for voting in the TSN Play Of The Year competition. Right now some jerk named Ennis is winning but really, scoring against Budaj isn't impressive. Go vote for Thornton and tell your friends!
Monday Morning Skate
I got nothin. Games tonight:
The Bruins thank their fans for being pretty alright during the year, despite its disappointing end.
Friday Morning Skate: The Defense Rests
Apologies for the technical difficulties yesterday but it's hard to post when you're drunk in a gutter. Anyhow, Devils and Rangers moved on leaving the East as teams-that-have-won-a-cup-plus-Washington and the west as teams-that-haven't-made-the-finals-except-1993-and-the-late-60s.
Round 2 starts tonight:
Predictions: Mike Smith and Pekka Rinne both have good games.
Wednesday Morning Skate: The Devil's in the Details
Gameday. Get pysched.
This is the last game on NESN of the year.
Panthers-Devils Open Thread: Rats in New Jersey
Florida Panthers visit the New Jersey Devils tonight for a battle royal. Florida returns home after the game either way, but New Jersey is playing for a chance at another trip to Florida. Make your own Brodeur retirement joke here.
You! Shall Not! PASS!
Tuesday Morning Skate: AWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Phoenix beat Chicago last night, letting Shane Doan into the second round of the playoffs for the first time in his career. He's 35 and been on the Coyotes since they were the Jets. Congrats to old man Doan. The second round of the western conference is set at Nashville vs. Phoenix and St. Louis vs. LA. All relatively likable teams, which is fun.
Games tonight:
Yep, only one. The first round is almost over. Go Cats!
