Why Not Us?

Here’s my round up of meaningless rankings so you don’t have to round them up but can hopefully find some meaning:

I understand ESPN’s logic, but we don’t have to be ‘one of the many teams’, do we?

Dammit, Fox. That’s why I hate you, so last year. Ok, so Prisco really hates the ‘Wildcat’, his opinion, everyone has one. Well, woo hooo USA Today, you really did the math, 21-5 would be hard to achieve in the wins column unless the comish has a big surprise. I like CHFF but the Fish moniker is downright insulting. I look at Scout’s prediction of 6-10 and it’s very possible but then I look and listen to Tony and all is well…I believe in this guy! Girly arm? C’mon Walter, Chad snr gets it done. Hail the King! He may have a point, the schedule is the great leveller this year.

Personally…2 cents…to be the best you have to beat the best, so bring them on.

ESPN	15	Many teams that go from worst to first experience a three-game drop the next season. The Fins are fighting the odds favoring an 8-8 record this fall. (Clayton)
FOX	19	SUMMER STRENGTH: Despite losing two starters from last year's solid secondary, the Dolphins deftly restocked in free agency (CB Eric Green from Cardinals, S Gibril Wilson from Raiders) and the draft (CBs Vontae Davis and Sean Smith). Against the Randy Moss-Wes Welker duo in New England plus T.O.-Lee Evans in Buffalo, Miami will need all hands on deck. CAMP CONCERN: Chad Pennington could use someone to emerge at camp this summer at wide receiver, preferably former first-rounder Ted Ginn Jr. COOL STAT: By improving from 1 win in 2007 to 11 wins in 2008, the Dolphins joined the 1999 Colts as the only teams in history to make 10-game improvements from one season to the next
CBS	20	This will be their step-back season. Then look out in 2010. There is talent, a lot of it young, so they are building something special. When they're good enough to dump the Wildcat is when they will be a playoff team again.
USAtoday	17	Impossible to match last season’s 10 win improvement
CHFF	17	Chad Pennington was the sixth different QB to lead the Fish in passing in six seasons (and the best, for sure). Maybe Pat White or Chad Henne will make it seven in a row this year.
Scout	20	What we like: Great coaching, a nice young defensive nucleus, and one of the best safety tandems in the NFL. What we don’t like: A budding quarterback controversy and a murderers row schedule. Record range: We just don’t see them returning to double digits, our guess – 6-10
Walter	17	I stand by what I said in my last Miami write-up: The Dolphins have a solid squad, but I feel as though their ceiling will always be a first- or a second-round exit until they transition to Chad Henne. No defender is scared of Chad Pennington's girly arm. Just ask Ed Reed.
SI	17	The difference between this year and last might just be the schedule. This one's a bruiser, starting with Atlanta on the road, Indy at home and San Diego on the road, and ending at Tennessee and home with Houston and Pittsburgh. Every one of those teams could win 10 games, and that's how the Fins have to start and end the season. I really like thePat Whitesecond-round pick, but ifChad Penningtondoesn't stay upright, playingChad Hennewith White in relief could be a major pothole.
BetUS.com	15	Congratulations, Miami! A huge 11-5 SU season last year has put you right on the radar. Teams are going to take this club more seriously next year, which means stiffer competition. Remember, this is a team that went 2-6 ATS last year.

Alex Mack, C, California: I've had the pleasure of interviewing Mack twice, once at the Under Armour Senior Bowl and once on my radio show. His interviews at the combine will excite coaches and general managers. Mack is all ball, all the time. Some people compare him to Nick Mangold, but Mack reminds me more of Casey Wiegmann and Ryan Kalil.

A strong Senior Bowl performance pushed Mack to the top of the list at his position, but it's tough for a center to go in the first round. However, if Mack moves well in the short shuttle, runs close to a five-second 40-yard dash and throws his weight around, it will be hard for teams in need of a center to pass on this guy.

And yeah, they are here to be mocked, derided, spat at and hell, even agreed upon. I’m not here to offer my suggestion, because I have no idea which is what draws me, fatally, to these sites.

About Football	Brian Cushing, OLB USC Team Needs: OLB CB S WR With Joey Porter playing well this year, outside linebacker isn't a huge need, but he will be 32 in 2009, and Bill Parcells loves impact linebackers. So I wouldn't be surprised if he looks for one to build his defense around.	23 Nov 08
New Draft	Terrence Cody, DT, Bama Whatever Parcels decides to do in the 2009 NFL Draft I will agree with I am just guessing. Terrence Cody is HUGE and I think he will be a big run stopping influence immediately.	4 Jan 09
Walter Football	Victor Harris, CB, Virginia Tech Miami has gotten better against the pass recently. In fact, prior to the Chiefs game, they hadn't given up a touchdown in three weeks. But that doesn't mean that the Dolphins don't need an upgrade at corner; they still rank 19th versus opposing aerial strikes. Victor Harris would be an excellent upgrade for a secondary that needs help everywhere.	31 Dec 08
Football Expert	Brian Cushing, OLB, USC Since August, I have pegged the Dolphins with either ILB Laurinaitis or Maualuga, but with the phenomenal season the Dolphins have had, there is no way either will be available at pick 26, so the Dolphins take Maualuga in Brian Cushing. Cushing is the perfect 3-4 OLB, as he has played both DE and OLB for the Trojans. The Dolphins would love to upgrade its defensive backfield, but Cushing is far better value for now.	31 Dec 08
NFL Draft Dog	Greg Hardy, DE/OLB, Mississippi (JR) Hardy (6' 4" 264 lbs) was injured early and only played in 8 games this season, but still managed an 9.5 TFLs and 8.5 sacks. Reminds me of the Cowboy's DeMarcus Ware.	3 Jan 09
Draft King	William Moore, FS, Missouri The emergence of USC FS Taylor Mays as a potential NFL prospect has bumped Moore down a bit in his draft projection spot, though keep in mind that Mays could opt to return to Los Angeles for his senior year at USC. If that happens, at least in theory William Moore would move up the board. The Dolphins used a first rounder on Tennessee DB Jason Allen in 2006, but to date that hasn't particularly panned out -- plus it was a move made by a previous administration. Bill Parcells and his crew are very sharp, and I could see them snatching up Moore and developing him into a solid NFL talent.	4 Jan 09
FF Toolbox	Vontae Davis, S, Illinois What a turn around Bill Parcells and company have done with a 1-15 Dolphin team. Despite the impressive 2008 showing, this team has a lot of needs. An impact WR, a couple of LBs and a ball hawk S. They will solve the later with the selection of the ultra talented Davis. A college corner, Davis will play FS in the NFL. There's a question about his maturity, but Parcells has a track record of changing minds and attitudes.	16 Dec 08
Consensus Draft	Brian Orakpo (DE, Texas) Orakpo is one of those draft enigmas -- you never quite know where he's going to end up. That of course is what entices Bill Parcells into picking him, knowing that Orakpo could be the best pure pass rusher in this draft	6 Jan 09
Football’s Future	Brian Cushing, LB, USC Cushing is an all around linebacker that could help out in a variety of roles for the Phins next year. His main role would likely be as an edge rusher where he has a lot of potential, but he also has the ability to move inside and be a presence there. Lots of nice stats out there for us, some are headliners others are under the radar. But we get it done. Tony’s eye for all the right details and ability to motivate players to do it, soft words, his boot up their ass or a finger pointed to the door. Whatever. It gets done.

The much quoted ‘Cinderella’ reference is all out there. Really, enough all ready. We are in this for real. They see us as a nice little side-show before the real contenders get it on. Ok, under the radar…that’s nice.

Yahoo-SN	Only the Colts and Chargers go into the AFC playoffs with more momentum. The problem is, the matchup against Baltimore might be too big of an early hurdle.

SI	Nobody's really mentioning this, but the only other time an NFL team improved by 10 games from one season to the next, those 13-3 Colts of 1999 lost their playoff opener at home to a lower seeded team (Tennessee). That doesn't necessarily mean Miami can't keep the magic alive into the postseason, but the level of competition just increased dramatically for the Cinderella story of this year's playoffs. Before beating the Jets last week, the Dolphins hadn't defeated a team with a winning record since pulling an upset at Denver in Week 9. And that was 4-3 Denver, mind you.
CHFF	Last week: Needing a win to clinch the AFC East, the Dolphins took what Brett Favre gave them, beating the Jets, 24-17, to tie the best single-season turnaround in league history. Cold, Hard Football Facts: In his triumphant return to the Meadowlands, Chad Pennington didn’t throw an interception for the 10th time this season, completing 22 of 30 passes for 200 yards and two TDs. Next Game: vs. Baltimore on Sunday (AFC Wild Card Playoffs). Miami committed just 13 turnovers on the season, setting a new NFL record (along with this year’s Giants), while the Ravens registered a league-high 34 takeaways

What a MFing journey. Holy crap. We didn’t need to cheat, buy in big salaries and egos or trade away the family jewels. This has Parcell’s common sense all over it. But now that we know him, it has Sparano all over it. I really like this man. And… you know what looms in the distance (yeah I know one game at a time) … another date with Cam Cam.

Yep, he could, he should, he is gonna. For the first time I really believe we can kill a decent opponent. We fight tough, we do what it takes to get it done. We control the ball in all the right areas. I don’t think – oh-oh here comes a dumb play. I don’t need to cover my eyes for that 3rd down. If Chad does get to laugh it will truly be one of the sweetest NFL ironies of all time. Beautiful.

Just look at that progression thru the teens. That's as reluctant and begrudging as it gets. They did not want to do it but really had no choice after Ws started to kerrching like a New Years sale in a Macy's cash register.

ESPN	All they have to do is beat the Jets to make the playoffs.
Fox	Sure they've only won two games against teams with winning records. Fine, they barely beat some of the league's worst teams like the Raiders, Seahawks, 49ers, Rams and Chiefs. But one more win against Chad Pennington's old team gives the Dolphins the NFL's most unlikely division title ever.
CBS	If they go to New Jersey and beat the Jets they win the AFC East. That would be incredible. Chad Pennington probably wouldn't have it any other way, playing against his former team to do so.
