Black Shoe Diaries Pitt Fans are at it Again...

If you're at all like me, then you've probably visited the Big Ten blog on ESPN from time to time.  Personally, I think Rittenberg is a pretty fair writer, and doesn't inject any of his bias (Northwestern...hate hate hate!) into his writing.  All in all, typically a good read.

I guess he's doing a new series where he and the bloggers from other conferences are comparing their teams, and the latest installment is...drumroll please...PSU vs Pitt!!  You can check out the read here or here.  It's a decent idea, and naturally, both writers came to the conclusion that such a game would end in a victory for the good guys.

But if you really want to get your money's worth out of this experience, I'd suggest you read the comments on both blogs, particularly the Big East side of it.  Pitt fans couldn't be any more delusional if they tried.

So who do you think would win, and how much do you think we'd win by?

Black Shoe Diaries PRYOR FOR HEISMAN!!!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think Terrelle Pryor's mythically legitimate candidacy for the 2009 Heisman Trophy is quite possibly the greatest farce of the upcoming season?  Yes, we all get it:  he was THE hotshot recruit a few ago, and subsequently landed with the most overhyped team in the country.  There's your name-brand recognition, which, as well all know, is roughly 91.7% of the battle (think Graham Harrell's snub last year).  But what about, I dunno, the stats?  Analysis ensues:

NAME CMP ATT YDS CMP% YDS/A TD INT RAT
Terrelle Pryor 100 165 1311 60.6 7.95 12 4

146.5

NAME CAR YDS YPC LONG TD
Terrelle Pryor 139 631 4.5 38 6

Hey, ya know, that's pretty good for a true freshman, and I doubt that (on the surface) anyone will debate this.  But what if you dig deeper?  Here are TP's stat lines against USC, PSU and UT:

(@ USC)  Passing:  7-9, 52 yards, 0 TD 0 INT, Rushing:  11 rushes, 40 yards, 0 TD

(PSU)  Passing:  16-25, 226 yards, 0 TD 1 INT, Rushing:  9 rushes, 6 yards, 0 TD 1 (barely) fumble

(Fiesta Bowl, Texas)  Passing:  5-13, 56 yards, 0 TD 0 INT, Rushing:  15 rushes, 78 yards, 0 TD

Black Shoe Diaries You're Never Too Old to be a Little Brother...

I'm sure there are some on this board who will roll their eyes at the following subject matter, and I can't say I blame them.  But it's the offseason, and I'm bored.  So the following are some "interesting" and recent tidbits about everyone's favorite Big East titan.

-I was perusing the interwebs earlier, and came across this interesting take about JoePa's B10 expansion ideas (pittblather.com):

"The desire by Paterno for a Eastern member in the Big 11 is simply about the geographic isolation of Penn State. It is, as usual, self-serving for Paterno and Penn State. It is not about the Big 11 or any desire to reach out to the other 3 programs mentioned. It is not about helping the Big 11 and their big gap between the end of the season and bowl season."

I mean, wow!  Talk about your sour grapes!  We get it, Pitt...you're Pennsylvania's JV football program.  You lost 3-0 against an Oregon State team missing two of their best players, and haven't had a 10-win season in 25 years.  So you feel the need to lash out and take shots about PSU "always being self-serving."  Last I checked, we weren't the ones making fans buy 3-game ticket packages because we can't sell tickets any other way.  Our 2 for 1 offer is no worse than what you offered us back when we weren't a top program.  Any one of those programs should count their lucky stars JoePa mentions them for inclusion at the grown-up table.

You would think that the discrepancy in the recent levels of success would lead to more of a Wes Mantooth towards Ron Burgundy point of view ("From deep down in my stomach, with every inch of me, I pure, straight hate you. But goddammit, do I respect you!"), but oh well...their throats must be stuck, choking on all that pride.

-If you can't build a wall, morph into a giant who controls weather patterns (from Wanny's twitter).  No additional words are needed:

Lightningwannstedt-122x300_medium

-Guess we're not the only ones in trouble with the law.  I don't post this to hurl stones, despite all the crap we took from Pitt fans (and, well, the rest of the country) when we had some legal issues.  I post it more because I wonder, where's the offense coming from?  Their entire offense was drafted in the 2nd round, and he's playing Sundays now.  Good luck this year, Pitters.

Black Shoe Diaries The Heisman Trophy

"The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award (often known simply as the Heisman Trophy or The Heisman), named after the former college football coach John Heisman, is awarded annually by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City to the most outstanding player in collegiate football."

Well that explains why Colt Brennan won it last year, I mean the guy set records.  Oh, he didn't win?  Huh.

Well at least it explains why Graham Harrell is being considered this year.  41 TD's and 72% completion, seems pretty "outstanding" to me.  Oh wait.  He'll be watching from home.

AT LEAST the voters will be able to choose from a diverse group of candidates.  Shonn Greene, best RB in the country, 100+ yards in every game.  He should have a good shot.  Jeremy Maclin had 95 catches, another 250 yards rushing, AND played a key role in the return game.  I'm sure his prospects of winning are pretty legit, right?  How about Andre Smith, arguably the best OT in the country?

And surely the defensive players will get their due, right?  Aaron Maybin, Brian Arakpo, Terrence Cody, Malcolm Jenkins, Rey Maualuga...all great players who could be declared "most outstanding" in the country.  And "most outstanding" is what is being rewarded, correct?

Oh wait.  No.  That's not it at all.  Because none of these players satisfy both the two most important qualification to win the Heisman Trophy:

1)  Are you a quarterback?

2)  Is your team in the Top 3?

Because you see then, and only then, can you be considered "truly outstanding."  It's just how the system works.

Satire aside, the Heisman Trophy is as mythical as an undisputed National Championship these days.  It's a complete bastardization of what it used to be.  I'm half convinced that the only reason this award exists anymore is so that Jason White and Eric Crouch can meet up and discuss the merits of "paper versus plastic" for bagging groceries.

I will not be tuning in to watch the Heisman Award ceremony, and I encourage others to do the same.  I offer my congratulations to whoever wins it, with the lone caveat being that, lamentably, it was never a fair competition to begin with.  So congrats and enjoy the bronze statue.  Just know that it's worth nothing more than what the pawn shop is willing to pay ya for it.

Black Shoe Diaries The Case for the One-loss Teams

Rankings used from the AP Poll:

1) Florida Gators

Wins over ranked teams: #13 UGA (49-10, away)
Loss: #25 Ole Miss (30-31, home)

2) Oklahoma Sooners

Wins over ranked teams: #7 Texas Tech (65-21, home), #16 Cincy (52-26, home)
Loss: #5 Texas (35-45, neutral site)

3) Texas Longhorns

Wins over ranked teams: #3 OU (45-35, neutral site), #11 OK State (28-24, home), #12 Mizzou (56-31, home)
Loss: #7 Texas Tech (33-39, away)

4) USC Trojans

Wins over ranked teams: #10 Ohio State (35-3, home), #19 Oregon (44-10, home)
Loss: #17 Oregon State (21-27, away)

5) Penn State Nittany Lions

Wins over ranked teams: #10 Ohio State (13-6, away), #17 Oregon State (45-14, home), #22 Michigan State (49-18, home)
Loss: #28 Iowa (23-24, away)

6) Texas Tech Red Raiders

Wins over ranked teams: #4 Texas (39-33, home), #11 OK State (56-20, home)
Loss: #3 OU (21-65, away)

Resume Rankings:

Taking into account the number of wins over ranked teams (and how highly ranked they are), while also factoring in the location of the game and margin of victory, here's what I come up with.

1) Texas
2) PSU
3) Texas Tech
4) OU
5) USC
6) UF

Only Texas and PSU have three wins over ranked teams, two of which were very convincing. Tech has two quality wins, which in my opinion are better than OU's and USC's. UF has one big road win...and nothing else.

Ranking the losses:

Basically the same criteria as above.

1) OU
2) Texas
3) USC
4) PSU
5) UF
6) Texas Tech

OU has the most forgivable loss, followed by UT who lost on the road to the #7 team. USC and PSU also lost on the road, but USC lost to the better team. UF lost at home, pushing them back to #5, and TTU lost by 54 points...need I say more?

Assigning points on the basis 6 points for #1 (5 for #2, 4 for #3, etc) and so on, and then adding the points for both categories, here are what the rankings SHOULD be:

1) Texas - 11 points
2) OU - 9 points
3) PSU - 8 points
4) USC - 6 points
5) Texas Tech - 5 points
6) Florida - 3 points

Compare this to what they currently are (following #1 'Bama):

1) Florida
2) OU
3) Texas
4) USC
5) PSU
6) Texas Tech

So what can we conclude? The voters need to pull their heads out of their asses and stop ranking according to "when you lose." As for as I'm concerned, "when you lose" is a lot less important than who you beat and who you lose to, but I guess that's just me.

I mean, am I the only one who fails to believe the best two teams in the country are from the SEC?

Thoughts?

Black Shoe Diaries What if...

Yes, I know it's still early in the season, and yes, I know this has about a 1% likelihood of happening, but work with me here...

What if PSU makes it to a non-championship BCS game?  Of course, I'd love to see them play for the MNC, but they could hypothetically go undefeated and still be left out (see:  Auburn 2004).  More realistically, they could drop a game somewhere, finish 11-1 but still grab the B10 automatic bid or an at-large bid.

What if we got matched up against the Big East champion, which as of right now could very well be the...

...wait for it...

...Pittsburgh Panthers!!

Yeah, we all made fun of Pitt when they lost the first week, and they've since had their struggles against teams like Iowa and Syracuse.  But they went into Tampa last night and beat up a previously unbeaten (and in my opinion pretty good) USF team, something that Kansas was unable to do earlier this year.

Right now they're undefeated in Big East play, with potentially the biggest hurdle already cleared.  With how bad that conference is this year, why the heck couldn't they win it?  And yes, embarrassment as it is, the Big East still gets an automatic BCS bid, so just imagine the possibilities if both PSU and Pitt are available to the selection committees.

We're talking about a Top 5 rivalry when it was at its peak, and since we all know that the selection committees will make deals with one another, this could definitely happen.  Moreover, if OSU makes it to the BCS, I think a lot of people would want to see them in a rematch with USC in the Rose Bowl, thereby lessening the burden of the Rose Bowl needing to select us for "tradition's sake."

Can you imagine this?  JoePa in his LAST game as a HC, beating Pitt and riding off into the sunset?  This game precipitating the renewal of one of the historically greatest rivalries (and PA's most desired one)?

Yes, it's early, but still...the possibility is there, and it's not that far-fetched.

Black Shoe Diaries Can we just PLAY the games already?

This from Holtz and May, regarding the B10 this upcoming year.  More of the same:

Wells is the best offensive player in the league (probably true), Laura is the best defensive player (gimme a break, he would've been the 3rd best LB on our team last year), Pryor will be the best newcomer (debatable, since no one knows how he will be used), the coach on the biggest hot seat is JoePa, and oh yeah...did you know we had some players with legal issues?

I can't wait until we can actually PLAY the games and hopefully prove some of these guys wrong.  Moreover, I can't wait until there are some new things to talk about so we can stop hashing the same stories to death.  I get it...OSU is God's Team, PSU is a bunch of thugs, and JoePa is old.  If only there wasn't still Rodney Kinlaw until the season begins...

Yes, I'm well aware that I'm one of the 3 ppl on this planet who enjoyed this game, and that you have to be at least a little masochistic to watch it. However, I respect the hell out of PSU's defense for this game, and choose to focus on that rather than our anemic offense.

Black Shoe Diaries Connor and King NOT Drafted on the First Day

Yes, you read that correct.  PSU's all-time leading tackler, and best cover corner of the past two years were not drafted in the first two rounds of this year's NFL draft.  From this, I can only draw a few logical conclusions:

1)  The "experts" are idiots.

I've seen Connor going in the first round of numerous mock drafts, with King on the periphery.  Connor also occupied a spot on Mel "The Guru" Kiper's Big Board for a good portion of time as well.  Shows what these guys know.

2)  A bunch of scouts should be out of jobs right now.

Remember that Paul Posluszny character?  Ya know, the one who was third in the entire NFL in tackles before his injury?  Well, many believe Connor to be even better.  Guess these guys were too busy dealing with "upside" and "measurables" to remember to watch the damn game film.  You can't teach instincts.

And if they are basing their picks on the mythical "upside," how in the heck was King not drafted?  We're talking about the guy who ran the 2nd fastest 40 yard dash at the combine, played virtually the entire year with an injury, and is a class act off the field.  Guess he doesn't have enough "upside" for the NFL.

Sure, being a diehard PSU fan, this angers me almost as much as it mystifies me.  But then again, what does it matter?  Tell guys like Tom Brady, Marques Colston and Brian Westbrook that being drafted late means you won't pan out.  Or conversely, tell guys like Joey Harrington, Ryan Leaf and David Carr that being high 1st round picks is the only true dictator of future success.

Bottom line, there are going to be some teams looking awful smart tomorrow when they get a pair of 2nd-day steals.

Best of luck, Justin and Dan.

Black Shoe Diaries Cause for Concern?

Just read a little tidbit about Derek Moye on FOS, and while I won't divulge premium information, it was intimated that he was getting the better of our top CB, AJ Wallace.

What's the first problem that you see here, because I notice a couple:

1)  Our best CB just got beat out by our 4th best WR (5th, if you can count the suspended Chris Bell).

I mean, doesn't this worry anyone?  All we've heard about is how Wallace is really stepping up, he's taking the #1 (our # for the best CB these days, I guess), blah blah blah.  He shouldn't EVER get beat by one of our "lesser tier" WR's.  But what if...

2)  Derek Moye is one of the three best WR's on the team.

Uhh, if this IS the case, that's great, right?  Then why the heck isn't he starting??  Give me the guy who can create mismatches.  Give me the guy who will be a HUGE target in the red zone.  I'll take him over D-Will's unfulfilled potential if these notes are true.  So why isn't he starting?  Perhaps...

3)  FOS is tinted blue and white just as much as it was last year, and we all know how that turned out.

Yeah, it's a PSU site.  Yeah, it'll be inherently biased.  But still, can anyone else shake the feeling that we're setting ourselves up for yet another letdown?  Are all these players really this good, or are they going to go the way of the overhyped (not saying they're bad, just not as good as we were LED to believe) Morelli, Brackett and Bell, among others.

I don't know, it's just hard for me to shake the feeling that whatever weaknesses we may have are just being swept under the rug yet again.  What does everyone else think?

Black Shoe Diaries The State of Journalism

Here's Ron Cook's latest slam piece in the Post-Gazette:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08084/867556-87.stm

I'm not disagreeing with everything he says.  In fact I agree whole-heartedly that I wouldn't want to play for JayPa if I was a QB recruit.  But what the hell...

...yeah, we have our problems, but why go on and on and on?  Newsflash, you're not saying anything that you (or David Jones) haven't said before.  Are the Pittsburgh masses truly that myopic that they'll eat up every regurgitated piece of drivel you vomit out, so long as it bashes PSU?

Yeah, we have our problems, sure.  But Pitt has MUCH WORSE problems, and they got about two freakin' sentences.  Way to let your bias not affect your "journalistic integrity."

Ron Cook and the Post-Gazette are a joke.

Black Shoe Diaries Shaw/Rich Rod

Now, I'd like to preface the following by saying this isn't a rationalization for losing Shaw to UM, because I DO believe that his loss will hurt.  Despite his stock seemingly dropping during his senior year, his highlight tape looked good and we recruited him for a reason.

Also, I'd like to add that I'm not big on criticizing 18 year old kids, because let's face it...their minds just don't work like ours.

That said...

...is anyone else noticing the similarities between Shaw and Rich Rod?  I remember Shaw saying something to the effect that PSU was his "dream school" when we were offering him, and it didn't take him terribly long to accept (despite JayPa's scheduling snafus, of course).  Next thing you know, he's playing cat and mouse by doing what seemingly every big-time recruit does:  setting out some hats, leave everyone guessing for a few minutes and then making the decision you had made in your mind all along.

Along the same vein, I clearly remember RR stating that he planned on "being at WVU for a long time," and look how that turned out.  His situation has been worthy of a Daytime Emmy, and I'm sure that housewives all over the country could just watch the RR/WVU situation unfold in lieu of the temporarily strike-delayed soap operas they're used to.

Did Shaw make the right decision?  Perhaps, on the surface...as long as he knows what he's getting.  A man always looking for the bigger thing, and who basically "used" talents like White and Slaton, winning big games with them but hardly preparing them for the NFL.  Maybe it'll work out, maybe it won't.

But it really begs the bigger question.  Why would you want to go play for a guy like Rodriguez, or Houston Nutt, or Bobby Petrino, Nick Saban, etc.  Their track records all read the same:  good coaches with questionable character.  Yet look at their recruiting hauls!!  Saban got one of the best (the best?) class in the country!!  I don't know, it really just seems like you're mortgaging your future, playing for a guy like that.  Hell, I'd rather play for Charlie Weis, because while he might not be a very good coach, at least he's loyal to that school.  It really boggles the mind.

So yes, of course I wish we had landed Shaw.  I also hope that he had enough maturity to inform the PSU staff that he was reconsidering his commitment.  Sure, recruiting is a shady business, but that still doesn't stop coaches from making strong interpersonal connections with players, and vice versa.  Let's hope that Mr. Shaw at least defied his age, and gave the PSU staff who recruited him hard a little bit of heads up.

Best of luck to you, Michael Shaw.  I'd ask myself "what could have been?" but who knows...perhaps you'll be doing the same in a few short years.

Black Shoe Diaries A Question

Does anybody know which PSU seniors have been invited to these "draft status bowls?"  I know Morelli was in the Shrine game, and Connor is in the Senior Bowl...but what about Kinlaw?  Did he make the cut anywhere?  Is he getting invited to the combine?

I would like to think that 1,300+ yards in the Big 10 after not even starting for 4 games would warrant some attention.  Kinlaw's a great guy who I'd like to see play somewhere on Sundays, even if it's just as a special teamer.

Any feedback is helpful here!!

Black Shoe Diaries Pryor NOT visiting

Well, so much for us being "back in it" with Terrelle.  He's now changed his Jan. 18th visit to Michigan, and apparently has added LSU to the list.

"'I'm taking my official visit to Michigan on Jan. 18, that's this upcoming weekend,' he said. 'I was supposed to go to Penn State but that's changed. I'm not really sure where I'm going on Jan. 25 and if I'll even take a visit in February. Right now it's Michigan as the only one scheduled.'"

The article concludes by saying Pryor is "not sure where the Nittany Lions stand."

Wow, it sure didn't take him long to change his mind, huh?

Black Shoe Diaries The Exodus of the Wolverines

It appears that next year, as opposed to this one, is now the ideal time for PSU to finally beat the Wolverines.  The major sports-news outlets are reporting that Ryan Mallett is transferring (destination unknown), and Adrian Arrington is declaring for the NFL draft.  Coach Rodriguez also expects Mario Manningham to declare for the draft as well.

This, coupled with several key graduations (Hart, Long, Crable, etc.) and the implementation of a new system, leaves the Wolverines as vulnerable as ever.  Moreover, we're returning 19 starters (if King stays), and we've finally ridded ourself of #14 and remembered that we can play some darn good smashmouth football.

Is 2008 finally the year we halt the streak?  Sadly, if it's not...well...then it probably never will be.

Black Shoe Diaries New Recruit!!

Source:  http://pennstate.scout.com/a.z?s=157&p=2&c=700151

Looks like we pulled in another big score for this year's class as D'Anton Lynn, a safety/CB prospect out of Texas, has just committed.  To me, this is big for a couple of reasons:

  1.  With Lynn and Sukay, we should have a good (NATURAL!) foundation in the secondary for the next 4-5 years.  I cannot undersate this, as the Mark Rubin era hasn't exactly blown up.
  2.  Did I mention he's from Texas?  Along with Michael Mauti from Louisiana, this shows me that we're making big strides in national recruiting.  Hopefully this will bring to an end the apathy we've had in recent years towards recruiting down South and out West.
Welcome to PSU, D'Anton, I couldn't be prouder to have you as part of the family!!

Black Shoe Diaries The Big Easy

Everybody please stand up and cheer for your current Big Easy leaders...the UConn Huskies!!

No folks, we're not talking about basketball.  The UConn Football Huskies...currently edging out "next big thing" USF by 16 points...are the only team with an undefeated Big Least resume (thank you, Big Easy officiating crews!).  How did it get to this point?  Where are conference favorites Louisville, Rutgers and WVU?  Try and stay with me here...

Rutgers beat Syracuse...who beat Louisville...who beat Cincy...who beat...Rutgers.  Huh?  Not done yet.

Rutgers beat USF...who beat WVU...who just TROUNCED...Rutgers.

Rutgers, Louisville and UConn also managed to lose to hardy OOC foes such as Maryland, Utah, Kentucky (didn't they just lose to Mississippi State?) and Virginia.  Simply amazing.  But I guess since they went 5-0 against a bunch of Junior Colleges last bowl season, I should be impressed, right?

Alas, we will always have our Rock in these troubling times...the Pitt Panthers.  Terrible then, terrible now...and likely for years to come.  But great job on that last carry today, Mr. McCoy.  We miss you here at PSU!!

Black Shoe Diaries Louisville Redux

What do ya know, the team that can "outscore anyone" just lost because they couldn't protect a lead.  They finally play an above-average (though unranked) team with a pulse, and they couldn't get the job done.  Now here comes the spin about how the Big Least is "deeper than just UL," and "Rutgers and USF are the conference's most complete teams anyhow."  Slice it however you like, UL was the Big Least's BCS team last year, and was expected to challenge WVU for the conference championship.  This hurts them every bit as much as Michigan's implosion hurts us.  But here's to guessing no one in the media sees it that way, certainly not David Jones.  Spin this one, David.

Black Shoe Diaries David Jones is a Real American Hero

Here's a link to the latest drivel by David Jones:

http://www.pennlive.com/columns/patriotnews/jones/index.ssf?/base/columnists/1189464002229970.xml&am p;coll=1

As usual, he has a bunch of nonsense against to spew about the Big 10, all the while wetting himself over the Big Least.  I think the part that got me the most is the following.  When describing Louisville's win against MTSU, Jones states "And Louisville kept Middle Tennessee at bay with 58 points led by Heisman candidate QB Brian Brohm."

Wow, it sounds to me like they had a good 'ol time at that game!!  It's almost as if they had a nice little romp, and MTSU didn't score 42 points.  I mean there's dishonest, and there's delusional.  Jones clearly has shifted towards the latter, especially when he calls out PSU's fans for being classless, while saying NOTHING about the RU students shouting obscenities at the FREAKIN' NAVAL ACADEMY.

David Jones is a joke.

Black Shoe Diaries Louisville...

...just gave up 42 points to MIDDLE TENNESSEE!!  It's not like they were garbage time points, either.  Yeah, they won (58-42), but how exactly is that impressive?  Some of the other blogs (and "legit" sportswriters...hello Stewart Mandel!!) have taken shots at PSU for scheduling FIU, but how is this any better?  When we play cupcakes, we eat them up and they're digested by halftime.  Louisville, meanwhile, was choking on theirs throughout the entirety of them game.  Isn't this a team who was supposed to contend for the Big Least championship?  Why should I be buying into them right now?

Yeah, UM's loss against ASU was embarrassing.  But at least that was a team who won the I-AA championship two years running.  Meanwhile, the Middle Tennessee team who just gave UL fits lost to FLORIDA FREAKING ATLANTIC!!  C'mon, enough of the Big Least Kool-Aid!!  They look impressive because none of the teams play defense, there's no other reason.  Guys like Brohm wouldn't be throwing for 5 TD's a game in a LEGIT conference, and guys like Slaton and Rice wouldn't be approaching 200 yds a game either.  In my opinion, Louisville's performance tonight APPROACHES the level of sucktitude which Michigan displayed last Saturday.  The only difference is that the media will never see it that way.  Oh well, I hope those sports-writers brush their teeth, otherwise that Kool-Ade might stain 'em.  Whatever.

Black Shoe Diaries The Big 10 as a "Power Conference"

Well, the boys in Bristol are at it again.  This time Mark Schlabach tackles the question of the Big 10's legitimacy:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview07/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=2984164

He makes some fair points, in noting both our conference's overall mediocrity (six teams with losing records!!), as well as our subpar postseason showing.  Apart from that, there seemed to be relatively little insight as to how this year might shake out.  I understand that the point of the article wasn't to make predictions, but he could do a little more than mentioning key players each team lost.  How about talking about which Big 10 teams will "return the conference to glory" this year?  Would some analysis of players not currently playing on Sundays have been remiss?

No, Schlabach instead chose the tried and true (or "trite, not true" if you ask me):  we're heroes through November.  After all, true power conferences win all their bowl games, a la the Big East.  True power conferences win national championships, like the SEC.  True power conferences routinely send two teams to the BCS, winning both games.  Just make sure it didn't happen more than a year ago, because history any less recent seems to be forgotten by these "experts."

No, it wasn't too long ago that we were "fast enough" to dominate the BCS, and Georgia's "Southern speed" wasn't getting them very far in the Sugar Bowl.  For once I will actually agree with Stewart Mandel and say that conference strength IS cyclical.  I, for one, just happen to believe the Big 10 is going to cycle back a little faster, starting this year.  Unless, of course, the Big East beats us to the punch.

Bottom line, talk is cheap and games are played between the white lines.  We'll see who's going to step up soon enough.

Black Shoe Diaries Looks like they're at it again...

So it seems that yet another Pitt Panther football player has had a run-in with the law, this time because of drug possession.  Pitt Blather posted the story, and somehow it morphed into "PSU is still the root of all problems in America," and I believe these comments will illustrate my point:

1)  Frankly, I don't give a f*ck. Like with Fields, I couldn't care less if he's guilty. Compared to what Paterno and Rodriguez and the vested scumbag at OSU (can't recall his name), letting this go would be nothing.

Comment by geeman2001

2)  Keep in perspective folks ... the esteemed institution to the north declined to punish TWENTY MEMBERS OF ITS TEAM for violent assault and destruction of property. To the south, the coach openly brags about recruiting academic non-qualifiers and told reporters to essentially kiss his ass when they questioned his recruitment of his latest criminal. Regarding Ohio State, they should be on dual-NCAA death penalties in both football and basketball. None suffer any consequences for these actions.

If (when) Jerry "PSU Minister of Propaganda" Micco makes this story a major deal in the Post-Gazette, I give everyone permission to copy the above into your clipboard and paste it into an email to the PG Sports Editor.

3)  All that has to happen is one of those other pussies in the car have to say "it was my weed" and its over - just like for Mayo. Like I said in the other post, now adays, you can commit felonies and get no punishment, why should this even show up on the radar? PSU claims "felonies" "burglary" and "assault" are just "boys being boys", shouldn't this just be normal college student shit? I mean if you can beat people half to death and nothing happens, when you're not even harming anyone, who gives a shit?

Until someone says it was in his mouth, or how about in his pocket, this is less than nothing.

I can't wait for that fucking dump across state to pick up on this and try to compare it to their jail...er "football" team...

4)  Oh, wait. PSU is too busy playing games "on paper" instead of letting the results on the field dictate who's good and who sucks.

"A 5-0 bowl record sure looks impressive. Until you see who they played...Take Louisville or West Virginia and put them in the Big Ten and they instantly become three loss teams. Rutgers probably loses four or five."

How bout we play some big ten teams and see what happens on the field? Here's one that could work - a home and home between Pitt and PSU! What a brilliant idea! Then the Big 11 wouldn't have to talk about who they could beat if they did play them. We'd have results from actual games! What a novel idea!

Meanwhile, that shithole plays the softest Non-con they can schedule in the world next year. what a joke.

Comment by Stuart

So it appears as if the prevailing attitude is "who cares, PSU does worse."  I presented the following counterargument in the form of a comment:

"The only joke I see is the fact that you guys can spin just about ANYTHING to make it sound anti-PSU. That's now two incidents your team has had since "the largest and most jawdroppingly scandalous fight in the history of the world" happened. Naturally, PSU is still the axis of evil. Show some freakin' accountability, will ya?

Here's the difference...NO ONE KNOWS what happened in the apartment. The plaintiffs can't even agree on a story, yet we're automatically supposed to assume guilt. Do we still live in America, where innocence is presumed? I must've missed it when Pittsburgh seceded from the union...

Oh, and geeman...maybe you should get your facts straight, because I don't remember 20 players being charged. Please exaggerate more. The point remains that NONE of you guys were there that night, so you have no freakin' clue what actually happened. Even with that, the players are still being punished by BOTH judiciary affairs as well as JoePa, with the legal proceedings yet to unfold. But oh wait, it's PSU, so let's still villify them while our players are assaulting women and getting high. Oh, and this is just nice, Stuart:

"All that has to happen is one of those other pussies in the car have to say `it was my weed' and its over."

Yeah, you guys are class acts all around. And please please PLEASE stop going into our schedule like it matters to you. We'll be going to another New Years Day bowl (or better), and you'll be lucky to scrape together 7 wins against Eastern Michigan, Grambling State and Navy. Uh, and you mock us? Jealousy and myopia, nothing more.

So the next time you feel like getting your collective panties in a twist, why don't you just defer back to these comments here. That way, you can remember that people ARE allowed to break the law and get away with it, and be as big of A-holes as they want...as long as they play for or support Pitt."

I don't know what to say to or about these guys anymore.  I'm literally at the point where I think they're convinced that if we give them a home and home, world peace will break out.  Furthermore, their "sweep it under the rug and point out the flaws in other schools" is just downright appalling.  I should just do myself a favor and stay away from that site and the ridiculousness they pawn off as logic.
