Spencer Hall has written about the man who is arguably Georgia Tech's most famous athlete. Sort of.

One could argue that without Tracy Ham Georgia Tech would have a different coach, or, at the very least, would be running a different offense.

I know it's a stupid commercial thing, but this week Buzz is up against Auburn's tiger and is trailing for the first time.

This is also an opportunity to keep Georgia's "Dawg" winless.

Now this makes me feel old. I covered about his father, running this same event, when I wrote for the Technique. Antonio Sr. got a bronze medal for this event in LA and a gold in the 4x400 at the same Olympics. And it was while at the airport meeting his plane that I met and shook hands with another Olympian from Atlanta, Evander Holyfield.

The article is three years old, but the facts haven't changed since then. This is for all you guys too young to remember the early days of Tech in the ACC.

Groh will sign contract next week, but Johnson has confirmed he agreed "in principle" to take the job. Graduate assistant Lamar Owens will replace Monken as A-backs coach.

"The Yellow Jackets head to the Orange Bowl on the cusp of national prominence. Poor defensive performances in both a loss to Georgia and an ACC title game victory over Clemson in front of national television audiences ensured that Tech wouldn’t be talked about the same way as Alabama, Texas, Florida, Oregon and Ohio State. At least not until next year."

My niece sent me a Flat Stanley a couple of years ago to photograph in different places. This little Florida girl sent one to Paul Johnson.

From The Rumble Seat A glimpse into the future

First they said Johnson's offense wouldn't work in a BCS conference.  Then they said it would stop working once people had seen it.  Now they are saying Johnson won't be able to recruit; that the current success is with Gailey's players.

Here are some highlights of redshirt B-Back Daniel Drummond's senior season at Flowery Branch.  I'm afraid some of these runs were at the expense of my Grangers in the state playoffs.

From The Rumble Seat Where to watching the game

I'm going to be in Atlanta Saturday, but spending $150 or more for a ticket just isn't in the cards right now, and those people are selling pairs.  I could watch with my family, but my brother and father went to Georgia.  We can watch it together and remain civil, but I am not in the mood to remain civil.

Last year I watched the game at Rocky Mountain Pizza, which was a lot of fun, especially when the staff did shots after every Tech score.  The campus bar I spend the most time in,  K G Grumpy's, is now a Hampton Inn, so that's out.

Where's the best place in town to watch the game?

From The Rumble Seat What color uniforms will dawgs wear next week?

The pups will come into Atlanta needing a little motivation next Saturday, and we all know what that means to Mark Richt: dancing in the end zone or adding black to the uniform (either shirts or pants).  Even though the latter hasn't worked out the last couple of times they've done it, I hope they try again.

I'd like to see black helmets, red jerseys, black pants, red socks, and black shoes.  They may have to go out and buy the socks, but they've worn all the other pieces this year.  What do you think?

Dawg Sports War Eagle

Twenty-five years ago I wrote alternative lyrics to the Auburn fight song.  Unfortunately, Homer Rice and Bill Curry killed our annual rivalry, and we've only played them twice in the past twenty years (but we won both).

We can't get much use out of this (at least for the next few years), but you can.  I have discovered that it is close enough to their lyrics that you can sing along with them in a crowd and they won't notice.  Much.

War Eagle, crawl off the field
Never to conquer, ever to yield
War Eagle, you'll lose, it's true
Beat 'til you're all black and blue
Hey! Hey! Hey!
Drop the football
Moan, bitch, and cry
Go to hell! Go to hell!
Eat shit and die!
War Eagle, lose for Auburn
Asshole of Dixie Land

The part of interest is strong safety Dorian Porch's comments about Tech's offense. Apparently all it took was putting a man in motion and putting an A-back directly on the free safety to abuse VPI's defensive plan.

From The Rumble Seat New Georgia Tech uniforms

I guess like most of us I am biased toward uniforms similar to what I remember from my youth.  In my mind, Tech will always wear the uniforms they wore in the late '70s: gold pants and helmets with white jerseys, whether home or away.

I did not like the black jerseys that the team wore occasionally during the Bill Curry years.  I did not like the gold jerseys and white pants Tech was wearing when it won its last national championship.

I like that the current uniforms feature white jerseys at home.  I'm not thrilled with the color (it looks like vegas gold, not old gold), but at least it's not a metallic gold.

A big improvement this year is that the weird pointed stripes from 2008 are gone.  I hope, but I am not optimistic, that the white road pants are gone.

I wouldn't mind seeing a navy jersey for specially occasions, maybe once a year, but I'll settle for white jerseys home and away.

As long as Tech gets the uniforms as part of a marketing deal we'll be stuck with whatever they give us, and I can live with that (as long as they don't go Oregon on us).
