I love college football. It's the only sport I continue to passionately follow.
I grew up a huge Georgia Tech fan, but I always loved Alabama as my second favorite team. I loved the Bama uniforms, I loved the Wishbone offense, and I always felt respect and admiration for the great Bear Bryant. But most of all, as a little boy who loved his Geaorgia Tech Yellow Jackets, I hated the rude attitude and lack of class exhibited by the Auburn and Georgia fans and programs. But Bama was differrent. Alabama would beat Tech soundly year after year, but the Bama fans and players always conducted themselves with class and first rate character. When I moved from Atlanta to Birmingham in the early 90's, it was natural for me to adopt the Tide as my number 1 team. Tech fans were just too apathetic and too easily satisfied for my passionate nature. So it wasn't long before I fully converted to the Crimson Tide Nation, even though Georgia Tech will always have a special place in my heart.
2 True Stories:
1) When I was about 6 years old, my Dad took me to Athens, Georgia for the Tech - UGA game. As we were walking to the stadium, a drunk Georgia fan yelled out from his porch, "Hey, you little Tech boy! I hope you have a lousy day!"
2) When I was 8, my father and I travelled from Atlanta to Auburn for the Tech vs. Auburn game. We were having trouble finding our entrance gate to the stadium. My father politely asked a nearby policeman for assistance, but the officer only crossed his arms and completely ignored him. My father thought that he hadn't heard him, and so he asked again. But this AU policeman continued to blatantly disregard us.
So, this is why I am an ALABAMA fan to this day. Even though we have been down a little bit the past few years, Alabama will always stand tall amongst the landscape of college football. Let's continue to carry ourselves with class and honor. And no matter how tired some people may get of hearing it, let us continue to do it the way The Bear would have done it! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
