NCAA GAMETHREAD: IOWA STATE VS KENTUCKY
Iowa State seemingly shocked much of the nation two days ago when they disposed of the defending national champion UCONN Huskies. As a reward, our Cyclones will play a de facto road game against the overall #1 seed - the top ranked team in the country - Kentucky. Iowa State comes in with nothing to lose, but a shot to shock the world.

FIRST FOUR OPEN THREAD #2
Last night only featured the biggest NCAA Tournament comebacks EVER. What will Lamar/Vermont and Cal/USF offer for an encore? Is animal sacrifice too much to ask for? Are we recruiting Fred Hoiberg's son already?
Alright you degenerates....enjoy one last night before Thunderdome.

But when it came time to choose a college team in 2003, Blalock listened to Driscoll and went to Iowa State, then enjoying success under Coach Larry Eustachy. Nearly a decade later, Blalock regrets the decision.
"When I was 16 or 17, I might have said he’s helping me out," Blalock said. "But at 28, he may have hurt me more than he helped me. I know what kind of guy he is now. He burns a lot of bridges."
Blalock said he believed that Driscoll sold him to Iowa State, although he stressed he had no proof. When Iowa State fired Eustachy in the spring of 2003, Blalock said, Driscoll instructed him to call the athletic director, Bruce Van De Velde, and say he would attend another university unless Iowa State hired the assistant Wayne Morgan as Eustachy’s replacement. Morgan was hired, Blalock kept his commitment and Blalock said Driscoll visited Ames about four times a season. (A spokesman at Hofstra, where Morgan now works as an assistant, said Morgan could not be reached for comment.)
"I don’t like to live with regret, but every now and then, I do regret going there," Blalock said. "When it was time to make my decision with the N.B.A., even though my numbers were better than the guys in my class at point guard, all of them went to bigger-name schools and got picked ahead of me."
Everybody Wants a Piece of Nerlens Noel - NYTimes.com
A story on the recruitment of Nerlens Noel talks a lot about Will Blalock, including allegations of recruitment violations.
BIG 12 TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS OPEN THREAD
We might be out of the Big 12 Tournament, but apparently it'll still go on without us. These threads have been fun. So.....get drunk and get in here. Or go to Sips. Feel free to trash Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12 basketball in here as well.
BIG 12 TOURNAMENT GAMETHREAD: TEXAS VS. IOWA STATE
Welcome to the Big 12 Tournament. It's been a while since we've done much of anything in postseason play, much less the conference tourney, but Iowa State is arguably one of the hottest teams in the Big 12. The Longhorns come in, however, about as squarely on the bubble as a team can be. They're going to be fighting for their NCAA lives. The Cyclones, on the other hand, are locks for the NCAA tournament, but more wins will mean a better seeding - which hopefully means avoiding an 8 or a 9 seed.
It's a late start tonight, but let's give the Sprint Center a chance to experience a little bit of that Hilton (South) Magic.
BIG 12 TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS OPEN THREAD
We'll have our own game thread later tonight, but last night's shenanigans in the open thread were so much fun that we figured all of you could waste time at work watching games and making drunken comments in here.
BIG 12 TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND OPEN THREAD
It's finally upon us. For the first time in quite a while, Iowa State isn't playing on the first day of the Big 12 Tournament. To that end, neither one of these matchups feed into Iowa State's quarterfinal matchup. But, that doesn't mean we can't enjoy some mediocre basketball.
GAMETHREAD: BAYLOR AT IOWA STATE
It's Senior Night and a game for the rights to third place in the Big 12. Win and we're the three seed. Lose and we're the four. Either way, it's time to bid a Hilton farewell to Scott Christopherson and Chris Allen. Members of the team for four and two years respectively, these two have been integral to our run to the NCAA Tournament this year. It'd be great to send them out with a win over a Top 25 team. Despite the Mizzou loss, this team is zoned in. Let's just hope the same refs aren't working this game that were in Manhattan. Looking at you, John Higgins.
GAMETHREAD: IOWA STATE AT MISSOURI
Well then.....this game has a little different significance than we expected a few games back. Mizzou can no longer go after that Big 12 title. Iowa State shouldn't really be considered as a bubble team anymore. But the standings have set up so that Iowa State is playing to tie Baylor and Missouri in second place in the Big 12. More than that, a win in Iowa State's final trip to Mizzou Arena makes the Cyclones a definite lock for the NCAA tournament and works to improve seeding. This game will be no easy task, but we'll see how Iowa State responds to one of its biggest wins of the year, while we see how Missouri recovers from blowing the game of the year against Kansas. It'd be a lot of fun to send Missouri off to the SEC with a loss from ISU. It'll take one of Iowa State's most complete games of the year, but we've found out that Fred Hoiberg can coach a little.
Big 12 Outlook for Feb. 27 - Mar. 4
Another crazy week in the Big 12. With just two games left, seeds 1-9 are still technically up in the air for the Big 12 tournament, but things are finally starting to play out. Kansas' epic win over Missouri in the Border War finale all but assures the Jayhawks of a one seed in the Big 12 tournament, provided they don't lose out and Missouri doesn't win out. To that end, the fight for the second seed now includes Baylor and Iowa State. Iowa State can't fall any farther than fourth after their win at Kansas State, while Texas Tech has an iron lock on the tenth seed. It's going to be a fun week as the conference tournament picture takes shape, and Iowa State, Kansas State and Texas all work on their NCAA resumes.

GAMETHREAD: IOWA STATE AT KANSAS STATE
We took care of the two games we needed to. Now's when we make our move. With a win today, Iowa State secures no worse than fourth place in the conference and would clinch third with a win over Baylor. If the Clones can't pull it out in the Octagon of Doom, they get a little closer to that bubble. Iowa State needs to play MUCH better than they did on Wednesday night to even consider beating the 'Cats. Time to start seeing what Iowa State is really made of.
They're one of the most overlooked stories this college basketball season.
Iowa State, a team that can be described as a group of castoffs, misfit toys, expendables, whatever term you prefer, have built camaraderie around the gratefulness they share for getting a second lease on their college basketball lives.
...
If the Cyclones can win even two of their final three games Hoiberg's argument for conference coach of the year consideration becomes that much stronger, while his future in Ames becomes that much brighter.
Nick Fasulo of Searching for Billy Edelin is letting the world know what we already knew. Fred Hoiberg isn't just dreamy, turns out he can coach a little as well.
Is the Missouri game even going to be seen in Iowa?
If you check out the Big 12 website, they list the stations carrying each Big 12 Network game. Iowa State at Missouri figures to be a fun game to watch, but as of right now, they don't list a Des Moines/Ames or Cedar Rapids/Waterloo station carrying the game. A check of TitanTV has WOI carrying the game, but, still, the Big 12 website does not. I'm willing to bet WOI will indeed carry the game, but if you live in Eastern Iowa, you might want to start badgering the local television stations...
GAMETHREAD: TEXAS TECH AT IOWA STATE
It might not seem like it, but this is the biggest game of the year for Iowa State. A win is expected. A loss goes a long ways towards popping the NCAA bubble. That being said, Iowa State has some milestones to hit. A twenty win season. Ten wins in conference. Another sweep of a conference opponent. The race for the third seed. This is the latest we have played meaningful basketball since 2005. It's pretty freakin' sweet.
Big 12 Outlook for Feb. 20 - Feb. 26
We still have four games left for every Big 12 team, but we already essentially know the approximate seed of most teams. Missouri and Kansas will be the top two seeds. Baylor will likely be three or four. Iowa State will likely be three through six, while Kansas State and Texas are likely looking at four through six. The rest of the teams will likely fall in order. Iowa State, Kansas State and Texas, however, have the most power to make a meaningful move.

GAMETHREAD: OKLAHOMA AT IOWA STATE
We lost at Baylor. It happens. They are a top ten team and that loss won't move the needle much. Today is actually much more important. If we want to stay on the good side of the NCAA bubble, this is a must win game. We're more talented than OU and already beat the Sooners on the road. We need this one.
GAMETHREAD: IOWA STATE AT BAYLOR
It's like Big Monday, but on a channel you probably don't have. Iowa State heads into Waco after positively slapping around Texas A&M. The Bears, on the other hand, are reeling. Throw in the fact that Scott Drew is....ehh...just not that good of a coach, and there's a real chance at Iowa State giving Baylor some trouble tonight. Baylor stuck in a zone quite a bit against Mizzou on Saturday, and the Tigers scorched them from behind the arc. Iowa State is certainly talented enough to do the same. Oh, and if we can pull something off here, we don't have to hear that word that ends in "ubble" for a little while. Third place all to ourselves would be nice too.
Big 12 Outlook for Feb. 13 - Feb. 19
Despite dropping a winnable game in Stillwater, Iowa State is still movin' on up, Jeffersons-style, in the Big 12. The Cyclones are now tied with Baylor for third place in the Big 12. It's more for bragging rights at this point (unless you think we just go balls out and get in the top two of the league) because there's not a very high chance we don't face one of Kansas State or Texas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. They're pretty much our destiny. Oh, and for whatever it's worth, everyone from Oklahoma State on down is eliminated from winning the conference title. So there's that.

GAMETHREAD: TEXAS A&M AT IOWA STATE
Consider today "Operation Regain Swagger". The game at Oklahoma State never really got going for us. Whatever. That game didn't and won't kill us. A loss today would hurt the Cyclones a lot more. Thankfully, we're in Hilton Coliseum. Let's send the Aggies out of Hilton as losers one last time. On our way to an NCAA bid, of course.
GAMETHREAD: IOWA STATE AT OKLAHOMA STATE
The Cyclones last won at Gallagher-Iba Arena in March of 1988. However, if we are to continue our torture of Oklahoma State University this academic year, we'll need another big performance from our "Road Dogs". Stillwater obviously has never been an easy place for Iowa State, but, just like Saturday's contest in Norman, this is a game that NCAA teams find a way to win.

Big 12 Outlook for Feb. 6 - Feb. 12
What a difference a year makes. A year ago, Iowa State sat at 14-10 and 1-8 in the Big 12. We would win just twice more. Right now, we're sitting in fourth place, one game out of first. Meaningful games in February? Not since 2005. Iowa State is officially a major player in the Big 12 Conference race and the NCAA tournament race as well.

GAMETHREAD: IOWA STATE AT OKLAHOMA
So, the rumors are true. We're chasing down an NCAA bid. And, as Fred Hoiberg told the guys the day of the Texas A&M win, boys win at home and men win on the road. Oklahoma is certainly no pushover and will be a tough opponent on the road. A loss doesn't doom Iowa State, but a win looks damn good to the committee. Road wins (and defending the home court) are where it's at. Let's take a little Hilton Magic to Oklahoma this week.

GAMETHREAD: KANSAS STATE AT IOWA STATE
Farmageddon hits the hardwood tonight as ISU hosts K-State in what has turned out to be a pretty pivotal game. Iowa State is coming off of its biggest win since 2005, while the Wildcats are reeling after dropping their second game to Oklahoma in the last month. It's a slightly unusual feeling to have meaningful games this late in the season again, but that's where we are at. Most pundits have Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament after the Kansas win, but a home loss could undo a lot of that. Kansas State is a very dangerous team, but is struggling lately. A win is another damn good one to add to the resume. A loss hurts, more because it would be at home than the fact that it would be to K-State.
The basketball season is kind of like a golf tournament. December is like Thursday and January is like Friday. We've made the cut so far. Starting tonight (and into February) it's "moving day" - time to really show what we are made of.
