I'm adopting Cleveland State as the official men's March Madness team for Clone Chronicles. The wrestlers have lost a chance at the national title, and the women don't play for a couple of days.

NCAA Wrestling: Championship Standings After Session 3

  1. Ohio State 61.5 (4 CH, 1 CN)
  2. Iowa State 57.5 (3 CH, 3 CN)
  3. Nebraska 54.0 (4 CH, 0 CN)
  4. Iowa 53.5 (2 CH, 5 CN)
  5. Edinboro 49.0 (3 CH, 2 CN)
Iowa State needs a little bit of help, but today could have gone a lot worse. Gallick (consolation), Mueller (consolation), Sanderson (consolation), Reader (championship), Varner (championship) and Zabriskie (championship) are all still alive. Iowa State needs to pull a couple of upsets in consolations to make a move today.

MBB Recruiting Retrospective: Class of 2006

In the third installment of "Iowa State athletics have nothing interesting going on until they announce the women's brackets", we'll take a look at the 2006 recruiting class - a class that originally included Lawrence Westbrook (now at Minnesota) and P'Allen Stinnett (now at Creighton), but was filled in a hurry by new coach Greg McDermott. As an aside, this class had two JUCOs, and three high schoolers, and none made it past two years. Que sera sera.

 G Dodie Dunson

Dodie was more than serviceable as a freshman guard, and truly looked like he'd be a surefire starter down the road. He averaged just over five points a game for the Cyclones, but broke into double digits numerous times in Big 12 play. Was also developing as a shooter. Someone that would have definitely started last year and this year for the Cyclones. Now playing for the Bradley Braves after a year at Vincennes Junior College. Averaged just over 10 points a game.

 F Cory Johnson

One of the leading scorers in Minnesota basketball history, Cory never really found his niche in his two years at Iowa State. He was a great shooter (when he decided to), but most people will remember him for his game against Greg Oden and Ohio State, when he challenged Oden. Always considered a hard worker, both he and the coaching staff agreed that a parting of the ways was best after last season, and he ended up at Valparaiso, where he redshirted.

 F Wesley Johnson

A bit of a vagabond recruit, Wes was brought in by former Cyclone assistant coach Jean Prioleau and immediately contributed at the 3. After being moved to the off guard position his sophomore year, it was revealed he was hurt worse than previously thought. Not long after, he decided to hit the road, ending up at Syracuse. No one's really sure what went on with Wes, and why exactly he decided to transfer, but it's safe to say that this year's squad would have been much better with him.

 G Corey McIntosh

McIntosh was a star in the California JUCO ranks, but he found the transition to the Big 12 to be too much for him. While he was steady while playing the point, he was hardly anything to write home about, thanks to a lack of offensive ability. He ultimately transferred to Augustana, and is now playing pro ball overseas.

 G Mike Taylor

Taylor reeked of athleticism, and could almost score at will at times for the Cyclones during his junior campaign. While he was no stranger to turnovers and missed three point buckets, his assist numbers and ability to score in a hurry for the Clones made him one of the most dependable parts of the lineup. Unfortunately, he couldn't quite get his head screwed on right, and ultimately was kicked off the team. His story doesn't end there, as he bounced around, and became the first player ever drafted out of the NBDL. Now providing highlight reel dunks for the Los Angeles Clippers.

While this group may lack the star power of a Craig Brackins, it did provide four very serviceable players, with McIntosh as a reasonable bench player for any team that didn't suck. Mike Taylor is now in the NBA, while Wesley Johnson's future probably resides there as well. Cory Johnson is a quality role player for  any team, while Dunson would likely have been starting these past two seasons for the Cyclones. Unfortunately, the Cyclones get an 0-fer in terms of player retention for this class, and that's leading to a lot of the problems we've been seeing lately.

MBB Recruiting Retrospective: Class of 2007

Alrighty, time for the second part of my little series looking back at Cyclone basketball recruiting, it's time for the Class of 2007. Obviously, this class includes one surefire stud in Craig Brackins, but it also included some guys we thought we'd be counting on by now, and some that we are leaning on.

 G Charles Boozer

Boozer looked like a bit of a reach early on, and while he's not really contributing a whole lot, he's slipped into a bit of a role on the team. His athleticism and strength is something that's none too common on this team. He's also willing to shoot anywhere at any time. His role as a guy that plays sparingly is probably the best fit for him

 G Marcus Brister

Brister didn't even make it half a season. Brought in to act as a safety net at point guard, he was gone in a flash, and he wasn't too good when he was here.

 F Craig Brackins

Though he wasn't all-world his freshman year, Craig was very serviceable at forward. The 2008-09 season has served as his chance to break out into the national scene, and he's done nothing but impress. He now sits as a lottery pick in numerous mock drafts, and will be under consideration for All-American status. His pro decision could very easily decide both the fate of ISU basketball and his coach in the next couple of years.

 G Diante Garrett

Diante was a personal favorite of mine, especially after seeing some video. Most people wanted him to start at point his freshman year, and the role became all his during this season. While Diante is pretty good at distributing the ball, his scoring still lags, which has led to numerous frustrating moments for Cyclone fans. Truth be told, he's a good enough ball handler that if he had been able to shoot at all, he'd have landed someplace better. Regardless, I hold out hope that his development will continue.

 G Lucca Staiger

Ah, the legend of Lucca Staiger. Held out of competition as a freshman thanks to a totally bullshit ruling by the NCAA, his sophomore season at ISU was his first on the floor. And while he's shown glimpses of the shooting touch that we've been hearing about since he committed, the rest of his game lags far behind. One hopes that he was truly playing through injury this year, because otherwise, he leaves a lot to be desired as a ballhandler and a defender. He seems to be a good enough shooter, though, that he'll always see minutes.

 F Clayton Vette

Vette committed to Indiana State out of high school, but after a coaching change for the Sycamores, he landed at Iowa State....for a while. Rumors of homesickness came to light as he failed to make it to a sophomore campaign. While he might have been the best player in the state as a high school senior, he was less than impressive in his time at Iowa State. Now at Winona State.

This class might be considered a winner thanks solely to Mr. Brackins. A true program changer that never had a strong supporting cast. Garrett is one of the best assist men in the conference, and Staiger is capable of 20 on any night. Of course, the last two haven't shown any true consistency, but when you can get three guys capable of starting in the Big 12 in one class, that's pretty quality.

The overall success of this class may rest on the continued development of Staiger and Garrett, however, as it's tough to see Brackins in a Cyclone uniform next year. Let's hope it happens.
