I'm old enough to remember when the NFL was a superior entity. The AFL just did not seem to measure up to the standards of the day established by the Giants, Packers and Bears....Oh My! I am also too young to remember the heyday of the championship Giants with the likes of Gifford, Grier, Conerly, Rosey Brown, etc.
I do remember Joe Morrison and Y.A. Tittle and the likes of Fran Tarkenton running for his proverbiial life as his offensive line was a porous barrier through which the opposition flowed in a rapid unabated manner. It was many years of suffering before I was granted the long awaited Giant Super Bowl victory with Phil Simms and company garnering the honors for the 1986 football season.
I began to identify myself as a New engalnd Patriot fan in 1985, as Raymond Berry and company proceeded to Super Bowl XX in January of 1986, only to be trounced by the Bears, 46-10. No one could have beaten the Bears and the Patriots were merely a sacrificial offering to the Football Gods.
From 1986 on ,I count myself in the Patriot camp. I realized my long awaited Giant Super Bowl victory and began to distance myself from the Giants. Of interest to me, I really don't like the Giants anymore.
When the AFL and NFL merged, parity between the teams became a reality. All the fish were swimming in the same ocean and teams were truly becoming regionalized. If you live in Massachustts or New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, how can you be a Giants fan? The Patriots are our team!
