Blazer's Edge What about (Mc) Bob?

Since it is apparent that Portland is going to need some muscle(and depth) in the Post, they might want to consider Josh McRoberts, who had a nice year last year in Indiana. JM, according to 82games.com, is a Power 4/5, with a PER of 16.0. He was very effective without demanding a lot of offense being run through him, had an outstanding ratio of assists to turnovers for a big man, shot 54%(38% from downtown) and 74% at the line. He also had good numbers for blocked shots and rebounding. Memphis tried to land him for OJ Mayo at the deadline last year. Me thinks he would be a good fit on this roster.

Blazer's Edge We are not having a lockout!

That is because we are the ABC Hoops League, beginning our 32nd year of existence. I have had the priveledge to step into the role of commissioner, and we are looking to fill 6 coaching vacancies. These will go quickly. Interestingly, we have a number of coaches in our league with North West roots. The games are NOT auto simmed; and there is a tremendous amount of strategy involved as well. If you have ever thought to explore this type of entertainment, I would invite you to check out the league website, as well as an overview of the gameplay guide, to see if it is something you would like to know more about.

Teams available are:

Chicago Bulls, who also own the #1 pick in the draft, slated to be in 2 weeks.

Los Angeles Lakers- Large salary cap $ available going into our Free Agent signing period starting in a few weeks

Milwaukee Bucks- Talented team; on the rise

Utah Jazz-54 wins last year, and large cap room for upcoming draft. Also own #7 pick

Minnesota Timberwolves- Solid starting core

New York Knicks- Featuring the magical Steve Nash!

Here are the links. I am coach of the Champion Denver Nuggets. If interested, contact me at the email listed within the website. Thanks for looking.

Blazer's Edge Armon and Andre

The recent trip down to the D league is a quick journey for Armon to shake off some rust. Why? As much as I've enjoyed Andre's blue collar lunch bucket game, I am fairly certain that he will be gone quite soon, along with Joel's expiring contract; possibly other filler. The kid will be getting more minutes the last half of the year. Here's hoping Andre goes to a team that is in the playoff hunt. Don't be surprised if it's the Magic.

Blazer's Edge Chris Berman

Ok,Ok, so Berman wasn't really a basketball guy, but todays MLB hall of fame inductions brought back memories ot the early 80's ESPN-Tom Mees, Linda Cohn (she preserves rather well. Can you get formaldehyde dressing on your salads?), Chris Berman, etc. So with the induction of Bert "be home" Blyleven to the MLB Hall of fame, I ask, "what other great Berman nicknames do people remember over the years?" I'll start: Dave "parallel" Parker and John "tonight, let it be" Lowenstein. Others?

Blazer's Edge NBA Coaching Fraternity and the Doobie Brothers

Holed up in a hotel room, on the road, savoring a Blazers oh so close victory and watching the Lakers and Suns tussle.

Cam Newton is being interviewed, "blah, blah, bzzzzzzzzzz" and the obligatory Laker celeb gathering is being duly recognized by the camera toting ESPN  production team. Now and again, we get a pan shot, up close, of the zen master...and it got me thinking.

Now Mr. Jackson, for those of you kiddies that are unaware, was a rather under talented NBA player, who battled injuries, yet competed hard. He also chronicled some of his life at the time that was rather, er..NON NBA related. I'm talking about mescalin, peyote, hashish, and whatever else the 60's and 70's culture had to offer which was readily explored and often accepted as a path to enlightenment by  the young truth seekers of the day.

Uncle Phil. He smoked a few bowls.

Well then, what of the others? There are others from that generation who are now in the NBA coaching fraternity. So it got me to thinkin (this can a bumpy ride. Please buckle your seatbelt now) - Who else experienced life in more than one dimension? Now mind you, this is simply one man's opinion, and has no basis in factual evidence, unless, as in the case of Uncle Phil, it has been freely admitted. Others may have inside knowledge that I am unaware of, and this writer is more than happy to be gently corrected, or severely rebuked as the situation may dictate.

Who qualifies for what? There will be those that never did, never have, nosireebub. There  may be others who dabbled, maybe in college, but soon righted themselves and became pro-establishment, but still remain socially libertarian,

Then there are others who make ya wonder-"does drug testing in the NBA include the coaches?" I, for one, do not know the answer to that postulate, but I'm going to proceed under the assumption that they do not. Besides, it makes my post infinitely more fun! Remember, boys and girls- simply one man's opinion:

Pacific Division

Phil Jackson-Lakers

Phil is the only coach who still has not shaken the chronic. Though he won't admit it, after all these years, the triangle offense makes him sleepy

Alvin Gentry-Phoenix Suns

He's not too uptight. I say he dabbled

Keith Smart-Golden State

Don't know much about Mssr. Smart, but me thinks Hoosier U-heartland...No

Paul Westphal-Sac Kings

Yeah. back in the day. Paul rocked the long hair. It's the main reason he hasn't killed his rookie out of Kentucky. That and the kid makes WAY more money..

Vinnie Del Negro-Clips

Vinnie seems like a brown noser to me. If he did, it was long ago, and only for a little while

George Karl-Nuggets

George only recently quit..

Nate McMillan-Blazers

Umm..no

Kurt Rambis-T-Wolves

Oh ya. LA in the 80's? The only guy who wasn't was AC Green

Jerry Sloan-Jazz

Oh, HELL NO!!!!!!! Actually, Jerry once killed a player who had a blunt fall out of his pocket.

Scotty Brooks-OKC

Me thinks not. Pretty wholesome

Pops-Spurs

Drinks a lot of wine. Might he slip in a little green over the years? Let the tribe vote on this one

Carlisle- Mavs

This guy annoys me. Seems like a yuppie SOB. I'm bettin he was a frat boy and did it at parties to be cool

Rick Adelman-Rockets

Prefers beer, and lots of it. I'm sure he dabbled. Ever see his sideburns in the early 70's?

Monte Williams-Hornets

No way

Lionel Hollins-Grizz

If he did, it was long ago and far away (Thank You Karen Carpenter). Magic 8 ball consulted: MY SOURCES SAY NO

Stan Van Gundy-Magic

Fer sure, dude. Look what Cheetos will do to ya..

Spoelstra-Heat

Squeaky. Clean.

Larry Drew-Hawks

Well, DUH!  Shoulda stopped there. Oh well, it makes the road all the way back more admirable.

Paul Silas

Nope. But here's an inside hunch. Larry Brown was a BIG doobie brother. Ever see his threads in the 70's pics?

Flip Saunders

I'm thinkin Flip partakes in a few night caps every now and then. Not sure he's a member of the doobie brother clan (DBC)

Tom Thibodeau-Bulls

Seems way too intense to be a member of the clan. Then again, where's his freakin voice? I'll say nyet.

O'Brien-Pacers

I'm not seein it. Do any prosecutors have evidence?

Scotty Skiles

Reminds me of a guy who would drink a case of beer a night and be a mean drunk,,and see nothing wrong with it. But he'd have a BIG problem with someone with hair over their ears and a Woodstock T-shirt

Pistons-Kuester

No. Cognac for a nightcap; nothing more

Byron Scott-Cavs

See Kurt Rambis. Still, BScott has learned the success of working within the establishment. Hope he gets a chance to succeed in Lebrongoneville.

Doc Rivers

No..seems pretty stringent. Prefers balck and white to shades of gray

Mike D'Antoni

Lots of Vino. Some Pasta. Some Grappa. Weed back in the day.

Doug Collins-76ers

CCAA (clean cut all american), Olympian. Doug, if ya did, I forgive ya. I'm sure it was short lived..

Triano-Raptors

Oh hell, he's Canadian. Anything goes up there. Everyone knows it!

Avery Johnson-Nets

Oh HELL NO! Avery squeaks when he walks.

Well that's it. Again, one man's opinion. Hope Ben and Dave leave the post up. I tried to keep it fairly light. BTW, it's been over 20 years for me, and my life has changed a whole bunch from those hard luck, 7-11 big gulp and a burrito days. Still smile at the stupid stuff. There's a lot worse things in the world, as far as I'm concerned.

Blazer's Edge What about Ryan Anderson?

The promising 3rd year forward out of Cal? He's mired on Van Gundy's bench, as they have decided to go with Brandon Bass at the back up PF. Anderson can score the ball from both inside and outside and rebounds fairly well. His defense, though not spectacular, is serviceable. Would love to see RC figure out a way to get him back out to the west coast. Maybe with the extra #1 we have next year..

Blazer's Edge Something's not right

Watching last night's game, and the commentators remarked that BRoy was "back healthy" again, after being one of several Blazers to have missed significant time this season. I don't know 'bout that. Brandon's lack of mobility and quickness is painfully evident to me, and gives me deeper concerns than even just wondering how the rest of this season plays out. At this time, I think it is fair to say that Brandon is a defensive liability, and possibly an offensive liability as well when it comes to playing teams that know how to defend. How many open looks did Broy create for himself last night? No wonder his shooting line was dreadful! Hope he will spend a lot of time in the pool this summer doing hydro therapy to build back up those hammies..

Blazer's Edge Magic Johnson

Wait a minute..did I say Magic Johnson? I didn't mean to. Really. Besides, there are certainly those-particularly in this tight knit community- who, if not outwardly perturbed, are surely feeling slightly nauseous by virtue of having merely read the name. To those whom I have just identified, I extend my most sincere apologies.. It is by no means lost on this writer that there is a certain team that shall not be lauded or otherwise spoken of in terms that might even suggest some type of twisted perestroika. I had meant to actually write a fanpost on our dearly beloved Mr. Oden, but I inadvertantly put in the header the dear chap's newest nickname instead. Wonder if it will catch on with Mike & Mike?

Blazer's Edge What passes for entertainment

On a fairly slow evening in P-town. MNF turns out to be a blowout (Maybe Eli has the other NFC yeams right where he wants them?), various family members out grabbing some gifts on a surprisingly pleasant winter solstice evening. Last glance a few hours back and I saw the Bulls absolutely shellacking the Kings in Chicago, mid way through the third, by a count of 77-44. Low and behold, as I catch one last glance at scores before turning in, I see the Kings roared back to win (overcoming a 35 pt deficit and tying the largest comeback in NBA history). Now I know the Bulls fans at Blogabull have been calling for Vinnie's scalp for awhile now, as the Bulls appear to be incapable of replacing the explosiveness of Ben Gordon. Conversely, the patrons at Sac Town Royalty are energized by their young, energetic team, and are SO pleased to be on the rise after many were ready to start shoveling dirt on the coffin of that team last year. So with the table being set, i just had to take a run to the respective teams' SB Nation sites to read along how a fan reacts when erasing or blowing a 35 pt lead. It's really quite humorous, if you've nothing else to do tonight. Caution: Neither site exercises, shall we say, any type of a "filter" to the language used by the goodly patrons of their respective sites. There-you've been warned! Shout out to Ime-sounds like he was 'da man that started bringin 'em back in the 3rd Q

Rufus on Fire Gerald Henderson

Blazer fan here. I was suprised that your #1 pick did not see any PT the other night against the Blazers. Upon researching, it is apparent that he has not seen much playing time at all! This surprises me, as he is a fairly high pick with a solid, if not flashy, college resume. Couple that with the Cats struggles to score points this year, I would have thought he'd be getting more run. What am  missing?

Blazer's Edge Sacramento Kings, #7 seed

Are 5-4 after beating Houston at Home. A trip to the Sac Town Royalty page reminded me tonight of us 2 and 3 years ago. Unbridled, precocious exuberance! Clawing their way back up from Hell. Warning: The 2nd half thread page tonight is definitely, shall we say, PG-13. Sounds like Tyreke is their Brandon, and would replace Arnold for Governor if there were a vote held today! Alas, Spanish Chocolate hasn't been getting much run..

Blazer's Edge 3 pt shooting point guards-championship necessary?

Looking back at the the last 20 years or so, it would seem that the vast majority of NBA champions did not base their offense to any large degree upon the ability of their pg to hit a 3 ball.

91-92 Bulls- only starter to even attempt 100 3pt was Jordan- at 27%

92-93 Armstrong did shoot 45%, on 140 att. or 1.7 att per game

93-94 Rockets-"Mad Dog" Vernon Maxwell shot under 30% on over 400 att. Does this explain the demeanor?

94-95 Rockets- Sam Cassell shoots 33% on over 400 att.

95-96 Bulls-Steve Kerr shot 51.5% on 2.9 att per game. That Bulls team shot the lights out from 3pt range that year, with Jordan at 43% on 260 att, Kukoc at 40% on 216 att, and Pippen at .374 on 401 att.

96-97 Bulls Kerr and Harper split time at PG-Kerr at 46%, Harper at 36%.

97-98 Bulls Harper at 19% with under 100 att. Jordan fell to 24%,Pippen to 32%. Hugely different than 2 years prior.

98-99 Spurs Avery Johnson-made 1 of 12 attempts. All year.....

99-00- Lakers-Weird stat-Shaq had more assists than starting PG Harper! Both Harper and Fisher shoot 31% behind arc.

00-01-Lakers-Both Kobe and Shaw shoot 31%

01-02-Lakers-Fisher shoots 41% on 5att pg.

02-03 Spurs-Parker shoots .337 on 3 att pg

03-04-Pistons-Billups shoots .389 on 4.4 att pg

04-05 Spurs-The whole team sizzles the net from behind the arc EXCEPT PARKER, who hits at .276 on 2 att pg.

05-06-Heat-Jason Williams at 37% on 4.9 att pg

06-07 Spurs-Parker hits 40% but attempts only 38 shots all year. No need with Bowen,Barry,Finley and Ginobli taking care of business in that category.

07-08-Celtics-Rondo-26% on 19 attempts

08-09-Lakers-Fisher 40% on 3.7 att pg

Conclusion- Only a few teams seemed to rely on the PG to be an integral part of the offense with the assignment to knock down the 3 ball. Derek Fisher a couple of teams, Billups with the Pistons, Steve Kerr with the 95-96 Bulls. Most of these teams relied on either a SG or SF to carry this load. With the Parker Spurs, it was almost everyone but Parker!  Portland in my opinion will be OK without relying on a 3pt threat at PG, as long as spacing is good and Rudy,Martell,Batum, even Roy can stick their shots when needed. The evolving of Gregs inside game will be huge, with this ability to A) make shots, and B) kick out to open 3 pt shooter when doubled. I am excited to see a PG who can run the pick and roll!

Blazer's Edge Here's the trade we NEED!(Wonder if Blazers will hire me?)

Knicks sign Lee to 8.5M and Robinson to a 5.5 M,then trade to Blazers for Travis and Bayless. Portland stays just under cap, NY gets two players to replace the outgoing Lee and Robinson, plus keeping cap number low for LBJ in 2010. Would LOVE the energy both Lee and Nate would bring!  Lee will get 25-30 minutes , Nate gets 20-25 minutes. Nate may be better coming off bench,Am I hired?

Blazer's Edge Tyler Hansbrough = David Lee?

Seems like TH may bring a game similar to David Lee. So-so defense, but a non stop motor, a high rate of rebounds, including offensive, and a game predicated on scoring inside 10 ft., via putbacks, baby hooks, etc. Does this seem like a fair assessment? I have the #13 pick in my draft next week, and am tempted to grab TH, as I'm sure he'll be there, and if he indeed can live up to the David Lee standard, me thinks it is a worthy pick!

Blazer's Edge Free Agent PGs

After watching video of Pandergraph and Cunningham, I like the depth they bring to the Blazers backup 4 position, and don't feel we need to address this via Free Agency. Thus, my wish list for PG looks as follows:

1) Ramon Sessions- guy is a stud. Good offense and defense, super passer (holds Bucks team records for assists in 1 game), has good character, and would probably be most affordable.

2) Devin Harris- Would I trade Trex and Trout for him? You betcha!

3) Andre Miller- Polished, has 2-3 productive years left.

4) Kirk Hinrich- nice floor general, passable offense, upgraded defense, slightly over priced, but still a good value if healthy.

Don't like idea of Kidd or Nash.Love Bayless intensity, but I don't see him as being a bonafide PG. Just don't. If he proves me wrong, I hope it's in a Blazer uniform!

Blazer's Edge Martell Webster

Watching Orlando play this post season, I can see where a lot of their success could possibly be emulated by our Blazers. Now granted, turning Greg Oden into Dwight Howard ain't really fair to Greg, but Orlando has certainly done well by having multiple players who can hit the 3. Which keeps bringing me back to Martell. IF Webs can take it up to the next level, I really sorta like a lineup that would feature:

Roy, Fernandez,Webster,LMA and GO. Speed up the game, use the 3 ball to create good looks inside for LMA and GO.  I believe that Broy and Rudy are sufficient to bring the ball up the court. The two big "ifs" are Martell and Greg, but if they continue to evolve..well, that's a heckuva team! Would like to see us add a banger at the 4, and a quick, defensive Point (Collison?) to the mix. Will be an interesting off season..

Blazer's Edge Nellie and the Warriors

Is it just me, or does it appear that Nellie is trying really hard to get fired? This, of course, after signing a nice lucrative deal not so long ago? Let's see, right now he is pushing to alienate Monta Ellis, and he has no patience whatsoever for Anthony Randolph, who, at 19, is about the only inside player that has offensive proficiency in the paint. A raw talent to be sure. Oh, and of course, he has decided to arbitrarily rotate sitting veterans out although they are not injured nor even neccesarily battle fatigued. Says he wants to check out the younger players. Umm, isn't this what practice is for? Or 20 point 4th quarter deficits (of which the Warriors experience a fair amount)? And lets not forget that just recently he has decided to put Jamal Crawford in the doghouse, though no one is quite sure why? I look at Nellies track record through the years and I don't understand at all why he is revered in some circles. It seems his M.O. is to try to get teams to bond together through their mutual hate of the head coach. Well, as a fan of a fellow west coast franchise, here's to GSW keepin Nellie around for a good long time!

Blazer's Edge The Pride of Wisconsin Stevens Point

So it appears that the Suns owner and GM are content to let Terry dangle in the breeze like a pinata hours before a large birthday party. This is probably at the leagues behest, as it would take some of the shine off of the weekends festivities. It is indeed rare that a first year head coach is let go unless there has been some major transgression, which, frankly, I'm just not seeing here. It seems apparent that Kerr is indeed intent on blowing the whole thing up. So why are the Suns so underachieving? Is it really Terry's fault? Did Kerr really feel that the Suns would emulate the the teams of recent Suns lore with the addition of Shaq to the team. It seems to me that the Sum here is definitely less than the parts.

The Roster:

Steve Nash- 35 years old, crafty, good passer and shooter, no perimeter D. Though trying to stay a pro, he has publically lamented the loss of friends Bell and Diaw.

JRich- A scorer who needs to get 18-20 shots a game. This has been his M.O. throughout his career. What does history tell us about scorers who are asked to radically alter their game?

Amare- Thrives in a system where he, and he alone, is the inside offensive threat. His offensive game thrives on being able to take over the paint and get to the line. (This also makes me question why PTB think he would fit well with Greg)This uncertainty has led to decreased intensity on Defensive end.

Shaq- Playing remarkaably well this year. His presence actually makes it confusing for the others, whom have NEVER PLAYED with a dominant big man.

Barbosa- PG in the wings. Lightning quick, and likes to run. But do the Suns?

Barnes- signed to a longer term bloated contract. Would they do this again with todays hindsight? Probably not.

Grant Hill- Consumate pro who has gained enough perspective through the years that he appears to genuinely be happy just being able to play. His team first approach hasn't worn off though.

So, you have a number of disparate parts here which are being thrown together with the hopes of working well. Kinda like a Whitsett Frankenstein Monster. I have no doubt a few major trades will help the Suns in both the short run, and the long run, assuming they get get young quickly. Nash, Shaq and Hill are all in the sunset of their careers. Terry is the proverbial scape goat, because he tried to implement that one thing that a coach knows will help foster teamwork, identity building, and a committment to one shared purpose, and that is playing inspired TEAM DEFENSE. To be a successful defensive team, everyone has to buy in, not just 2 or 3. The Suns are to focused on trying to tinker with a successful offensive formula, rather than focusing on D and letting the offense-and the stats- take care of themselves. Why Steve Kerr is not being held accountable for this is beyond me. To blame Porter seems like a cop out. I say this is on the GM and the players themselves. As a sidenote- when the Blazers finally buy into ultimately committing to aggressive hard nose team defense is when they will go the pinnacle. Defense is hard work, and its not real glamorous either, but for talented teams with depth, it is the ultimate key to winning it all.

Good Luck, Terry. You deserved better. Glad to see #30 hanging in the rafters.

Blazer's Edge Defense..finally

Although one might argue that any observation from this game must be conservatively and subjectively  dampened down due to the "Wizards factor", it was apparent from the very start that Portland had a high energy level. I wasn't at the practice facility the last few days, but I guarantee that Nate challenged their manhood when it comes to defense. Don't think that Brandon hasn't heard about people speculating that he basically has been "taking time off" on the defensive end..(actually, that is true, and with the possible exception of JB, I believe the whole team has been basically lazy on defense). Tonight the Blazers were SO focused on locking down the Wizards on D that for the 1st half they had a hard time thinking offensively! Then they just let the game come to them in the 2nd half. Think Nate hasn't been hearing people criticizing him for seemingly ALWAYS having defenders switch on the Pick and Roll? Didn't see much of that tonight, and thank goodness! The extra step the ballhandler gets going towards the basket doesn't seem like such an advantage when you see Greg or Joel waiting there. Help defense was also extra alert tonight. Lets hope that this starts a new trend where we really do only switch on the P&R in, as Nate would say, "an emergency." This will keep Greg in the game, and we all are starting to see that this is indeed, a good thing! Kudos to Sergio for a very solid game on both sides of the ball. And lastly, a Shout out to Dwight Jaynes for bringing the P&R discussion to the table and telling it like it is. .. "with all due respect, Sir, that aint workin!!"

Sactown Royalty Cisco Kid

Blazer Fan here. Not understanding why FG isn't getting more P.T? It would seem to me he is one of your better players, and maybe one of the few who can play "D". What is going on down in Sactown? Still some lingering injury rust?? The Kings actually remind me a lot of Portland from 3 years ago. Keep the faith- there is hope! You will probably have turned over 3/4 of the roster by then. Thompson looks like a keeper (and a pleasant suprise to some). Tough interior defense will be required to afford the luxury of mild outside pressure (KMart). Luck in the lottery will go a long way.

Good Luck. The Kings remind me of P-Town, in that we're both the only show in town. Keep your chin up, applaud the positive and the good effort, don't hesitate to chastise the underachieving efforts, and never accept less than the best from the players, coaches, and management. Fans CAN sway what happens to a large degree.

BTW, I did the bright purple uni's.. (and someone tell Vlade to go on Nutrisystem!)
