Tomahawk Nation The 2011 Tomahawk Nation Tommy Awards: Commenter of the Year

Today we begin the process of handing out an extraordinary honor. To be named Commenter of the Year is to be selected by the community as the poster with the best body of commenting work over the last year out of 6,404 (as of this moment) members. But, first thing's first - vote for our previous five awards if you've yet to do so.

Story/Editorial of the Year (voting closes tomorrow!)

Fanpost of the Year (voting closes Saturday)

Best New Commenter

tricknole Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Award

The penultimate award of our series will go to one of these five nominees one week from today. Deliberate carefully, then cast your vote in the poll at the bottom of the page.

A. Dr. Kenneth Noisewater - The famed king of sarcasm, wit, and chronicling of statistics had a spectacular 2011. DKN and his loyal staff combed through the film of each game to provide a wealth of information to the TN community and somehow found time to compile an astounding volume of informative and hilarious comments as well. A tip of the hat to the good doctor - a strong candidate for TN's commmenter of 2011 and the hands-down winner for testicle of the year.

2. onebarrelrum - Despite implications from his screen name, OBR's comments are remarkably lucid for the vast majority of the time. He has served his time under the aforementioned doctor compiling play-by-play statistics throughout the 2011 season, also serving as TN's resident blogpoll manager. OBR has consistently provided informed and funny commentary and is also quite worthy of community recognition.

D. FSU - Our resident female strategy analyst has shaken off allegations of performance-enhancers stemming from having two brains inside of her by remaining an excellent commenter after the birth of her daughter. Always well-informed and witty, FSU provides excellent information from a standpoint of inside-program logistics. We are glad to have FSU as a oft-contributing TN member and proudly nominate her for Commenter of the Year honors.

IX. LouC/TheJim - This pair of commenters is like the Tomahawknation version of MasterBlaster. We're not really sure which one of them is the little guy in this dynamic-duo, but that's really neither here nor there. The thought provoking discussions LouC and TheJim provided over the course of 2011 in relation to the ongoing conference-realignment-musical-chair-marathon was nothing short of amazing.

Lavender. Michael@TN - Since joining the TN staff, Michael has been dominating the recruiting forums like Charlie Weis dominates a Shoney's breakfast bar. His incredible insight on recruit potential as well as fully-researched factoids on combine numbers have bolstered the recruiting side of Tomahawknation in a way that might be easy to take for granted by the casual reader, but is undeniably appreciated by the TN staff.

Tomahawk Nation The 2011 Tomahawk Nation Tommy Awards: Best New Commenter

The fourth category of the 2011 Tommy's looks to recognize the contributions of new commenters to Tomahawk Nation. It was decided that eligibility hinged on a sign-up date within the past year. However, as we feel that a new screen name grants one a new identity here at TN, those who changed names during 2011 were also admitted as nominees for outstanding value to the site since said change. Before today's voting begins, take a moment and vote for our other three categories if you have not done so already:

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Tomahawk Nation's yearly awards, the Tommy's. Created to recognize the brilliance of our 6,000+ member community and staff, I would go so far as to say that receipt of a Tommy is one of the highest honors achievable in the sports blogging interwebs. Without further ado, your editors present four nominees for 2011's Story/Editorial of the Year category, each penned by a different staff member as lead author:

A. "Simple Rule Change Could Help ACC Scheduling" - Bud Elliott

2. "FSU's Open Fall Practice: 'GET 'EM IN THE HUDDLE'" - onebarrelrum (with K-Man and fsu44 assist)

D. "Rock The Doak: A Decibel Diary of Doak Campbell Stadium" - The K-Man

All four were extremely well-written and the choice is not an easy one. Take a moment to reacquaint yourself with the nominees (they are all linked) and then cast your all-important vote. The voting period will end one week from today at the end of the day.

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A: One Foot Down

The final edition of our 2011 Opponent Blogger Q&A series features an excellent conversation with the Notre Dame blog One Foot Down. Editor burger23 was kind enough to answer some questions for us about the 2011 Fighting Irish.

TN: Coach Brian Kelly's second season got off to an inauspicious start with two tough losses, but the Irish have since rebounded and finished ranked 13th by Football Outsiders F/+ rankings, an indication that the team is much better than an 8-4 record would lead one to believe. How are Notre Dame fans feeling about Coach Kelly and the 2011 season as well?

OFD: Boy, that's a bit of a loaded question. Really, it depends on who you ask. At a school like Notre Dame, there's always that annoyingly loud part of the fan base that is never happy with anything. And the fact that Kelly hasn't delivered a national championship in his second year means he's "not the right man for the job" and "in over his head" and "small-timey" and so on and so forth.

As for my opinion, I'm happy with the progress Kelly has made. Though this season was a disappointment, I see signs that this team can be really good in a year or two. The defense has made a complete 180 from where it was in 2009, Weis' last year. The offensive line might be the best ND has had since the Holtz days. And Notre Dame is finally running the ball. On top of that, recruiting has been very good, with Kelly completely rebuilding the defensive line from the ground up.

Despite all that, it remains to be seen how far Kelly can take the program. Weis left the program in far worse shape than anyone imagined, so a complete overhaul of the team's attitude and culture was needed. On top of that, the number of injuries to key players over the last two years has been staggering: Dayne Crist, Armando Allen, Kyle Rudolph, Ian Williams, Kapron Lewis-Moore, Braxton Cave, and Jonas Gray all suffered season-ending injuries in either 2010 or 2011. And when you include injuries that caused Ethan Johnson to miss games this year, an injury that sidelined Michael Floyd for one game last year, and a high ankle sprain that has slowed down Manti Te'o for much of this season, the injury bug moves into the "epidemic" category. So I think we still don't know Kelly's ceiling as a coach. The next two years will be critical in determining if he's the coach that makes Notre Dame into a consistent national power again, or if he's a guy that will win 8 to 10 games every year with an occasional BCS bowl thrown in.

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A Part Deux: Streaking The Lawn

Our second installment of this week's Opponent Blogger Q&A feature is a conversation with Streaking The Lawn. Blog Manager Brian J. Leung and editor TikiUVA answered our questions and provided us with even more information on the 2011 Wahoos.

TN: Virginia sits at 7-3, an excellent record for a team picked to end up towards the bottom of the Coastal Division by many during the pre-season. To what do you attribute the success the ‘Hoos have seen so far this season? How has Mike London seemingly steered the UVa program onto the right track? Will UVa pay top dollar to keep London and his staff should other programs come calling?

STL: Well, my initial response to this question was that I give a lot of credit to the freshman, who made an immediate impact the second they stepped on grounds.  But then I cheated and read the question below, so I'll hold that thought.  Would you believe that this only London's second year? Meaning, he inherited three classes' worth of teams here, and only has one recruiting class of his own. To that, I have to credit London and his coaching staff for figuring out how to get these players to produce. He's turned the entire mentality of the team around. A year ago, athletes weren't going to classes and, it appears, generally felt like they were on top of the world. London came in and settled these guys down, makes random classroom appearances, and has changed this place into a, for lack of a better description, "Clear Eyes, Full Heart" mentality.  If that phrase catches on, I get the credit.

I think UVa will gladly pay top dollar to keep London around. While Virginia attendance continues to struggle, I don't think there's any doubt that there's a new wave of optimism in Charlottesville. That the Hoos are even 7-3 right now is a real testament to London. I welcome Penn State to give us another ring (if that report is even true).

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A Part 1: From Old Virginia

The first of our Opponent Blogger Q&A features during this week of the twofer comes via Brendan of From Old Virginia. He was kind enough to join us to answer our inquiries regarding the 2011 Virginia Cavaliers on the eve of the battle for the coveted Jefferson-Eppes Trophy.

FOV: UVA's success this season boils down to two things: offense and defense.  (I know, I know....)  Here's the thing: Even Al Groh's worst teams at the end of his tenure had good, solid defenses.  The problem was that the offense spiraled down the tubes and by 2008, 2009, his final seasons, it was a pathetic shadow of an offense.  Eventually the defense would crack from too much use.  London's offensive coordinator, Bill Lazor, fixed things almost immediately, and UVA had a solid if not spectacular offense in 2010.  But the defense was switched from the 3-4 to the 4-3 and the growing pains of a lot of guys playing new positions gave us a terrible defense.  In 2011, the players got comfortable in the new scheme, the offense continued it's upward progression, and here we are.

No doubt in my mind that we are on the right track now.  I said before the season that London's recruiting momentum was great, but in order to keep it going into 2013, he would have to go bowling this year to show proof of the "program on the rise" line.  UVA has now exceeded expectations in that regard.

I don't think there'll be a question of paying top dollar for London and the staff.  London is a Virginia kid from way back.  Military brat and therefore a Tidewater native, graduated University of Richmond....these are his stomping grounds.  I don't think this is a guy who's gonna take off when Alabama or Penn State or LSU come calling.  UVA will pay him to keep him happy, no doubt about that, but I don't think we'll have to get in a bidding war with the SEC.  And DC Jim Reid is kind of past the age of upward mobility and enjoys working with London.  Plus, quite a bit of the staff is made up of ex-UVA heroes; Anthony Poindexter and Shawn Moore are on staff, and Poindexter is a holdover from the Groh years.  Bill Lazor - well, UVA will certainly try and keep him, and we'd love for him to stay forever, but he's probably looking for that upward mobility; my guess is he'll stick around long enough to build a successful body of work and then take an NFL OC job.  I think he's got NFL head coach ambitions and I think he's got a shot at getting there.  So I'm not sure any amount of money would keep him around when he gets a good offer.

More after the jump!

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A: BC Interruption

We are very fortunate to have an excellent network of team-specific blogs with which to talk during game weeks. This week's installment of our Opponent Blogger Q&A series features our friends from Boston College at BC Interruption. Blog manager Brian Favat joined us to break down the 2011 Eagles.

TN: Much the same as Florida State, BC has battled a rash of injuries this season that has left the Eagles without key players, among them Kaleb Ramsey and Montel Harris. Talk a little bit about the injuries the team has dealt with and they impacts they have had.

BCI: There's certainly been no shortage of injuries for the Eagles this season. The only units that haven't been hit very hard by the injury bug are the quarterbacks and our linebackers.

The Eagles' rash of injuries has taken its greatest toll on the running backs, where Preseason ACC Player of the Year Montel Harris has been shelved this season with a knee injury. The school will apply for a medical hardship waiver and hopefully Harris will return for a fifth year. Behind Harris, both Andre Williams (questionable for Thursday with an abdomen injury) and Tahj Kimble (out with a head injury) have also battled injuries, which leaves us with only ... Rolandan "Deuce" Finch. Finch has done an admirable job filling in for Harris, Williams and Kimble, torching a terrible Maryland rush defenses for 243 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday.

BC's secondary has also been hit hard by both injuries and early season departures. C.J. Jones is out for the season with a knee injury suffered in the UCF game, while starting BC Jim Noel is questionable Thursday with an ankle injury. Add the departures of Okechukwu Okorhora and Dominique Williams from the team in fall camp, and the Eagles secondary is left with five freshmen or redshirt freshmen on the two-deep.

Finally, the Eagles' defensive line has been hit with injuries to DT Connor Wujciak (shoulder) and DT Kaleb Ramsey (foot). The school is also applying for a medical hardship waiver for Ramsey to return next season.

BC has also lost arguably the team's best receiver for the year (Ifeanyi Momah) as well as starting guard Nate Richman. Linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis is doubtful for Thursday with a leg injury. Basically, there has been no shortage of injuries to this year's Eagles squad, as evidenced by the fact that half of the starting jobs on this week's two deep go to either true freshmen, redshirt freshmen or sophomores.

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A: Backing The Pack

We are very fortunate to have an excellent network of team-specific blogs to talk with during game weeks. This week's edition of our 2011 Opponent Blogger Q&A is a chat with Backing The Pack. Blog manager Akula Wolf joined our TN wolfpack to talk injuries, QB's not named Russell Wilson, Notorious TOB, and more injuries.

6a00d8341c630a53ef011570dbf1af970b-320wi_medium

via latimesblogs.latimes.com

TN: Florida State and North Carolina State have shared one common nemesis this year - the injury bug. Tell us a little bit about the health of the ‘Pack and which, if any, players you expect to return to action against the ‘Noles on Saturday.

BTP: Well, let's see here. It's been so bad this season that we've had two guys get hurt in pre-game warmups and miss time. Just this past week, wide receiver Tobais Palmer collided with another receiver in warmups and suffered a mild concussion. He's back on the depth chart and should be available against FSU.

Our best defensive tackle, JR Sweezy, broke a bone in his foot during fall camp and missed more than a month of the season; he played about 25 snaps last week and will play against FSU as well. He's playing with pain. Our best defensive end, Jeff Rieskamp, remains out of the lineup with a shoulder injury. Initially it appeared this was a minor thing, but for whatever reason his condition isn't improving.

Two other defensive linemen will miss Saturday's game, as will fullback Taylor Gentry, who got hurt while filling in at defensive tackle. Several other linemen on the two-deep have missed time with injuries. It's been unbelievable.

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A: Testudo Times

We are very fortunate to have an excellent network of team-specific blogs to talk with during game weeks. This week's edition of our 2011 Opposing Blogger Q&A feature is a conversation with Maryland blog Testudo Times. Author Dave Tucker was kind enough to answer our inquiries about the 2011 Terrapins.

TN: This off-season saw Maryland choosing to part ways with long time coach Ralph Friedgen after a successful 9-4 season in favor of former Connecticut coach Randy Edsall. What was the feeling of the UMD faithful when the move was announced and what is it currently? What are the expectations for Edsall and how patient will Terps fans be with him?

TT: After Ralph was let go, there was a large segment of fans who felt he got a raw deal and shouldn't have been fired. But the reality of the situation was that Friedgen was no longer putting fans in the seats in College Park, which is why Maryland, despite an 8-4 regular season mark, fell all the way to the Military Bowl last year. With the departure of James Franklin, who was the head coach in waiting and guaranteed $1 million dollars if he wasn't named head coach by 2012, Friedgen would have been a lame duck coach as Maryland didn't want to extend his contract.

When Maryland hired Edsall, I think most viewed it as a safe hire, but still a relatively good one. But after flirting with Mike Leach, Edsall certainly didn't seem as high profile. And while Edsall hasn' had the on field results that many expected coming off a 9-4 season, he has done a lot to building the Maryland program and brand, especially in the state of Maryland. A perfect example are the new Maryland uniforms. Regardless of what people say, the team now has a look people outside of Maryland can identify them with and it definitely got people talking about the program who normally wouldn't have done so.

I think people have been somewhat patient with Edsall, but he has to get this team to a bowl game at minimum if he doesn't want things heating up in College Park. Additionally, with the decision to go with CJ Brown at quarterback rather than designing an offensive system around ACC Rookie of the Year Danny O'Brien, Edsall is already catching some flack from fans who think and know O'Brien can be successful. Edsall has also brought a no-nonsense attitude to College Park which has turned many of the players off to the point where some even spoke anonymously to the press to voice their frustrations. Any time you have a coaching change things like that will happen, but Edsall's has rubbed some fans the wrong way with that approach.

This week's edition of our 2011 Opposing Blogger Q&A feature is a chat with our friends from Wake Forest at Blogger So Dear. Editor RAJohnston was kind enough to answer some questions about the Demon Deacons for us ahead of Saturday's game.

TN: This year's Demon Deacon team is off to a 3-1 start that could easily have been 4-0. What are the expectations for the season like around Winston Salem right now? Has this start raised them from say, one of bowl eligibility at the beginning of the season?

BSD: The mood around Winston is pretty good right now. Coming into the year most people did not expect much from the team. That sounds awful to say, but it is true because of how terrible we were last year. Obviously we all want to be 4-0, but sitting at 3-1 right now is pretty unexpected from most fans. From here on out, making a bowl is still our #1 priority. If we can win on Saturday, the bar may be set a little higher, but for now I think 6-7 wins is what we need to aim for. The schedule in front of us is still very difficult. FSU this week, VT next week, @ UNC a couple of weeks later, ND and @ Clemson later on. That's not an easy schedule, but with Duke, Maryland, and Vandy left, there are definitely 3 games that we can win left on the schedule.

Personally, I would be very pleased with a bowl of any kind. It would serve as a great jumping off point for next couple of years when we can make serious runs at the Atlantic Division title.

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A: Shakin The Southland

We are very fortunate to have an excellent network of team-specific blogs to talk with during game weeks. This week's edition of our 2011 opposing blogger Q&A feature is a chat with one of the best sites on the network, Shakin The Southland. Blogger FIGUREFOUR was kind enough to answer our inquiries regarding the 2011 Clemson Tigers

TN: Clemson's offense has been re-vamped by former Tulsa OC Chad Morris. How has quarterback Tajh Boyd taken to the new system thus far? Does Morris ask his QB to be a part of the running game, and if so, how much of a threat is Boyd carrying the ball?

STS: Tajh is getting more and more comfortable as the season progresses.  The coaches said that the "light bulb went off in the latter part of the Troy game" and that he has been getting better and better.  Morris does use the QB in the running game, but much more sparingly than he did at Tulsa.  Boyd gains yards on designed runs which consist mostly of draws and zone reads but can scramble on non-designed carries to pick up 8-10 yard chunks.  While Boyd is a threat, he hasn't been the main weapon on the ground to date and I would expect him to be used rather sparingly running the ball, probably to the tune of half a dozen or fewer designed carries per game.

Tomahawk Nation Opponent Blogger Q&A: Crimson And Cream Machine

We are very fortunate to have an excellent network of team-specific blogs to talk with during game weeks. The first edition of our 2011 opposing blogger Q&A feature is a chat with Crimson And Cream Machine. Blog manager ccmachine was kind enough to join us to answer our inquiries about the #1 Oklahoma Sooners

TN: How do you see the carries being distributed between the running backs? In the first week 32 of the 38 carries went between two RB's in Brennan Clay and walk on RB Dominique Whaley. Do you see more carries for Roy Finch and five star true freshman Brandon Williams this week?

CCM:  When I say that everyone was surprised by Dominique Whaley's performance against Tulsa I mean EVERYONE was surprised. Well...everyone but the coaches that is. They were really high on him after the spring and in April Director of Football Operations Merv Johnson told me that he was going to play, and play a lot. I didn't even believe him enough to post that little tidbit on our site and that pretty sums up the traditional media's perception when the depth chart released with him as a starter a week before kickoff. Eighteen carries, four touchdowns, and 130 yards later we're all believers.

Brennan Clay was solid in the season opener as well (14 carries, 64 yards, 1 TD) but the missing factor in the run game was Roy Finch. Finch played mostly in the slot and only carried the ball five times out of the backfield (22 yards). I honestly don't believe that they could have used Finch in the capacity they they would like to this season without tipping their hand to Florida State. I would expect to see some different formations than we did against Tulsa and I would be completely shocked if Finch only has five carries at the end of the day.

I really don't believe that Williams will be much of a factor. Bob Stoops said earlier in the week that they're getting him ready to play but I'm thinking more so against Missouri and Ball State rather than Florida State.

Tomahawk Nation Discussion: FSU's Five Most Important Games of 2011

Let’s have some fun this afternoon. As the 2010 version of this discussion piece was successful in generating some interesting debate, I thought that a re-visitation of the topic of FSU’s five most important football games of the regular season might help to pass the seemingly endless time before the arrival of September 3rd. This year’s entry features some changes, though. With the goal of consistency in mind, as well as that of emphasizing realistic expectations as fans, I will speak of my EXPECTATIONS for this year’s team, referring to FrankD’s entries on the goals/expectations dichotomy.

Part One

Part Two

"14-0 should be our GOAL not only for 2011, but for every football season.

OK 'nuff said, but what are our EXPECTATIONS for the 2011 FSU Seminoles?

Everyone of us has a different idea about what will constitute a successful 2011

FSU football season. Many times our expectations are determined by blind homerism, where we perceive where we should be, or where we feel we, as Noles, deserve to be.

All too often expectations are confused with goals and this can cause disillusionment with our team at the end of the season when unrealistic expectations are not met."

As such, this will be the lens through which I will examine FSU’s most important games of the season. What are the expectations we have? What will the team need to do to go about meeting them?
