When the BCS rankings first came out, it was quite easy for me sink into the gloom of realizing that we may be losing our MNC bid to a team we beat this year. It's a difficult thought, until I consider what my expectations were when the season began and realize that this has been one hell of a season. First, Colt McCoy had a rough year last year and I wasn't too certain what to expect from his QB play this year. As it happens, he is on the short-list for the Heisman (and should, in my biased opinion, win it) and had a record-setting year for UT. I hoped he would perform well, but he vastly exceeded my expectations. Second, we beat OU by double digits in October. Every year, the Texas-OU game leaves knots in my stomach as it approaches, and nothing makes me happier than watching the Longhorns win this game. Third, not only did we beat Texas A&M, we beat the crap out of them! It was a fun (and cathartic) game to watch, and couldn't have turned out any better. Fourth, we're heading into conference championship week and UT still has a shot at the MNC. I know that this falls into the "I'm just happy to be nominated" category of optimism, but it's nice to be this close (even if the chances are not as certain as we'd like them to be). Fifth, we're going to a BCS Bowl... possibly against Ohio State. This is always a good thing for a college football fan.

So, yes, the BCS system does suck and it is entirely likely that we are actively being screwed out of a conference and national championship because of it. However, if I told you last August that we would soundly beat A&M and OU, have a Heisman-candidate for a QB, lock up a BCS birth, and be in the running for the MNC by December, how would you have reacted? Maybe this thought is just a band-aid, but it sure makes me feel better.

For the first time ever, I actually decided to head on over to another team's blog to see what they were writing about the Horns. In this case, I decided to visit Double T Nation where I found this post. Although I don't really care about the Vegas odds on Tech beating us (or vice versa - I expect it to be close and don't care to try to quantify it), I did take exception to the author's statement that Colt can be neutralized with pressure --> "Tech crushes Texas because simply, McCoy can not (sic) perform under high pressure."

I'm writing here because I am an admitted UT homer and my reflex response to this statement was that Colt is not nearly as flappable as this submission seems to suggest. As I've watched him throughout this season, I've seen a QB who can easily roll out of trouble and make plays (just remember the fumble/pass play two games ago) when under duress. I'll readily admit, though, that I am not a football technician and may be missing something. So, I open it up to you BON... disabuse me of this notion if I'm wrong or just add fuel to my fire if I'm not. Either way, I will read on with interest!

Hook 'Em! DMC
