Battle Red Blog WR Prospects the media isn't talking about

628x471_medium

Most of the media attention and mock drafters the past couple of weeks have been focusing(too an extreme) on the Texans first round draft pick at #26 as the place they will select a new WR. In the ADD driven media world, they have ignored the likelihood of losing Mario Williams in free agency and how that will vastly alter possible drafting priorities. I think most Texans fans are in agreement that Fucoby Jones is not living up to expectations, and Kevin Walter, while very reliable(and high motor'd, battlin'), does not have the upside to be a significant threat.

So while you will be saturated with names like Kendall Wright, Stephen Hill, and Alshon Jeffery, lets fire up the 'What If' scenario machine and predict the Texans elect to wait until the 2nd round to select a WR. Who will it be? The WR class this year is deep and opinions are wide and scattered on just who has a 2nd round grade. I think many fans here are under the impression that we need a Andre Lite, or a future Andre replacement. I do not agree with this frame of mind. Mario is our Z, and more than that he is our 'can do everything'. What we need is a complement X receiver with enough natural ability to fill in as a Z if needed. We don't necessarily need a burner, not in this offense. Our guy also needs decent size to excel in our blocking scheme. He also needs to have yards after the catch ability to be an intermediate threat in space. With those parameters in mind, after the jump I'm going to give you a look at 5 WR's you probably either haven't heard of, or haven't even considered. Is one of them a future Texan?

Battle Red Blog Spots Open in New Dynasty Fantasy League

Banner2_medium

I play alot of fantasy football for money every year. In particular I enjoy dynasty leagues and the concept of keeping players and waiting for them to develop. I am starting my own dynasty fantasy league this year and filling ownership spots now. I will give the link to the website, but here are some basics for you. Its a salary cap, player contract style league. It has 11 offensive starters and 11 defensive starters. Its PPR. It will have 16 teams in 4 divisions. it uses a draft for rookies only, and an auction for free agents. It has a $75 per yer entry fee. League prize pool is managed using leaguesafe.com. Prizes are paid out not only for 1st-3rd place, but also for weekly high scorer, division winners etc. If this is something you are interested in, have a look at the website:

Contenders Dynasty League

You can use the top pull down menus, under Reports, Rules, to access the links to the scoring system and league bylaws. Be forewarned this is not really for the casual fantasy player. If you are the kinda guy that needs a week or two to reply to trade offers, this is not the league for you. This is more for guys that are active on almost a daily basis. If you decide you are interested you can email me.

Battle Red Blog Bulls on Parade - Hype Up Thread

With T-minus 24 hours until we hit the lots to get ready for our most exciting moment in the franchise's short history, its time to slowly start building up the excitement level, crank up the decibels, and build up that Texas blood to a boiling point. Use the comments section to post Texans videos and photos that get you pumped up, or reminisce game moments of our trials and tribulations from "19-10" to Jan. 7th 2012. I'll post a few after the jump to get us started.

Battle Red Blog Anyone want to take in an out of town BRBer for tailgating?

I managed to score a pair of tickets in the bullpen for the game this weekend. I'm pretty damn stoked. I'm flying in from the east coast on the early morning flight Saturday. I get to Hobby at 10am and will probably head right to Reliant. I'd love the opportunity to meet as many BRB regulars as possible, so if any of BRB tailgating groups would be willing to take me in it would make the trip that much more worth it for me. I can reimburse for any food/alcohol I consume. I don't think I will have time to get a car, so I will probably just take the metro in. Do I need one of those stupid tailgating passes? They didn't exist the last time I tailgated.

Also if there will be any official BRB after parties, win or lose, I'd love to get in on that.

Battle Red Blog Victory Beer #4

Victory3_medium

After a win like that, maybe I should drink two Victory Beers! After 2 hard losses, a beating of a division rival was just what the doctor ordered. 500+ yards of offense, two running backs going over 100 yards rushing, Foster being the first Texan to rush for 100 and receive for 100 yards. The secondary played well. After a rough first two series, Matt Schaub played very well. The only dark cloud was yet another long term injury when Manning went down. These big injuries are really starting to pile up and I'm not looking forward to trying to make a playoff run with so many backups in the lineup. Let's hope the football gods show us a little injury mercy soon. Today's Victory Beer is a Belgian White from Shock Top Brewing, St Louis Missouri.

According to Pancakes.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. They must be desperate to give up a pick for an old declining WR, that or Andre isn't coming back nearly as soon as they portray him to be. Or thirdly, they are gonna get Mason's insight on the Ravens.

Battle Red Blog Victory...Cake?

100_2046_medium

I had some friends from work over today to watch the game since some of them were Steelers fans and the wife made this cake for the party. So instead of a victory beer this week, I went with the sweet sweet Victory Cake! Unfortunately since we were leading most of the game, my friends only had a limited amount of racist jokes to give me.  So after rounding up my cattle for the night and beating a few Mexican slaves, I shot 6 victory rounds from  my M1911 into the air before banging my sister and reading my dicshonary so I can get more better at words. Here's to Victory number 3!

Disclaimer: You probably won't get the sarcasm above unless you were part of the thread earlier this week with BTSC.

Battle Red Blog Upcoming Four-Game Stretch Will Be A Good Test Of Texans' Resolve

Unlike some emotionally unstable fans, I am not jumping to slit my wrist after the loss to the Saints. I think we were capable of winning that game, and of course I am disappointed, but I am not one to turn to the razor until we are mathematically eliminated. The only thing that is paramount to me though is this: They have to find a way to beat the good teams in a close game. I know we have been giving the Texans props for hanging with a championship caliber team, but the bottom line is, hanging with a good team, but not overcoming them, is starting to become too common. Forget the media taking Houston seriously, I think the players are going to need to beat a good team to gain the confidence in themselves that they will need to push through the schedule this year. I think the loss to the Saints came down to these basic things:

Battle Red Blog PFF Grades - Week 2

I took a gander of  profootballfocus this morning to look at how they rated the Texans performance in week 2 against the Dolphins. I found a few surprising numbers that I thought were worth talking about. I might make this a weekly series if it proves interesting enough.

Battle Red Blog Victory Beer #2

Victory2_medium

Towards the end of the 3rd quarter I didn't think I would be enjoying this beer today. Unlike last year though, the Texans didn't give up big plays and closed out the game with a strong running game. I think everyone's defensive expectations came back down to earth after this game, but there's still things to like there. One thing that is concerning to me is the near disappearance of Demeco Ryans. He rarely was around the ball and only managed a single tackle on the stat line. Let's hope he's ok. Tonight's victory beer is Tire Bite Golden Ale by Flying Dog Brewery out of Frederick, MD.

Battle Red Blog Victory Beer #1

Ah hell ya, nothing better than getting this kicked off in Week 1. Lets hope we get at least 9 more of these. My Victory Beer for this week is fittingly called Hop Devil Victory Ale. Its an Indian Pale Ale made with imported German malt and American hops. Brewed in Downingtown, PA.  What did you consume to toast the Texans first win?

P.S. The minimum word filter on SB is stupid and I hate its face.

Battle Red Blog Who to Root For - Week 1

I'm going to start this series early this year, right from the beginning. For those of you who weren't here the last couple years, basically I will list a few games from around the league that hold some kind of importance to the playoff hopes of the Texans and tell you who you should want to win. Its never to early to start hatin' on other teams. So lets take a look after the jump.

Battle Red Blog Possible waiver wire targets

Since every team has to make their cuts by today, including the Texans, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at some of the players being cut that the Texans FO might take a stab at to fill out our own 53 man roster. Where do you think our needs are? Do we need another interior offensive lineman? Maybe a #5 WR? How do you feel about our LB depth? Here are a couple names I saw that might be interesting:

Battle Red Blog Current Directv Subscribers

I took issue with the current promotion Directv is offering to new customers: FREE NFL Sunday Ticket AND a FREE HD DVR upgrade. So I called in to bitch about it and they gave me $180 off my Sunday Ticket and sent me a HD DVR receiver for free. Just a heads up for those of you who want to save a little money on your Directv bill. When you call in say "customer retention", then say "cancel service" when it prompts you. This will bypass their usual retarded customer service people and put you with someone who is authorized to give you discounts. Enjoy!

Battle Red Blog Who to Root For - Week 14

Frog_bird_give_up_medium

Well, here it is. Its come down to the edge of the cliff. Lose to the Ravens, and its over. Shock the world, and try to ride the momentum through the final 3 games. Battle Red. Monday Night. National Stage. Either the Texans will look like Rocky taking down Dixon, or suffer a very public death. The Colts loss to the cowpukes last week as put the unlikely Jaguars in the drivers seat of the AFC South. If they win everything up until our season ending contest, they are in. If the Colts win out their remaining schedule, they are in. The Texans have to win out and hope for the other two to falter just once. We aren't in the drivers seat, but we are in the sidecar at least. Let's look at the remaining schedule of our divisional foes after the jump.

Battle Red Blog Who to Root For - Week 13

Ajvscf3_medium

Ok beating the tits (and the bastard stepchild of Kid from Kid N' Play and a leprechaun) is always exciting, but considering who they had at QB against us we of course will temper our excitement a bit. As bleak has things have been the last month, the Texans are actually still alive in the playoff race, albeit with a rough rough stretch upcoming. I don't think even the Pope has faith that the Texans can beat the Eagles on Thursday night with either of their QBs, but thats usually when the Texans have decided to start winning in the past, when everyone has given up on them. Let's be serious here, there will be no wildcard team out of the AFC South this year. With the duos of Pittsburgh/Baltimore and New England/ NY Jets dominating the AFC, its clear the two spots will come from that group. So our only hope, is to catch the Colts who are suddenly looking more vulnerable. So after the jump lets look at the remaining schedules of our 3 divisional foes and their matchups this week.

Battle Red Blog Who to Root For - Week 11

Hockey_puck_with_beer

So during this past week I've become numb to the recent losing. I am convinced that the city has a sports curse over it. Its really the only explanation. Two weeks ago a pass bounces off Andre's knee and lands in the waiting arms of the opposing safety. Last week our guy volleyball spikes a hail mary into the surprised arms of the opposing player. I'm thinking this week our defensive linemen will come out on the field with a Roman Lectica and carry Sanchez into the end zone. 3 of the Jets last 4 games were won by a freak end of game mistake by the other team practically handing them an improbable win. So its the team with a shamrock up its ass vs the team that walked under a ladder indoors while holding an umbrella open to block a rainstorm of spilled salt then tripping over a black cat and crashed into a full length mirror. Battle Red Blog Who To Root For - Week 10

Arian-foster_medium

There has been a lot of doom and gloom the last week or so and the wagon is definitely thinning out. The defense will most likely continue to be teh suck, but there is some room for optimism. The remaining 8 games have several teams with less than stellar passing attacks and the Texans have a trend of having a strong second half of the season. This time last year the Texans were 5-3, yet 3 games out of the division lead. This year, even at 4-4, they are only a game out of the division lead and the best teams in the conference have 2 and 3 losses. Your Texans come in this week 10th in the AFC with a big divisional game against the Jags. There are 6 other games on the schedule with an impact on the Texans playoff hopes:

Battle Red Blog Who To Root For - Week 8

1257124641_peyton_medium

Hopefully a face similar to this one will be under that 5-head come Monday Night. Hopefully. This will be a pivotal week for your Houston Texans. Along with the important divisional game against the Colts on Monday, there are 5 games with real playoff impact on the schedule. Before the season I had this game against the Colts marked as a sure loss. After watching our defense in the first 6 games, I'm sure a lot of you have bought stock in Chlorox. But with Clark, Collie, Addai, Sanders, Bullit, and now possibly Donald Brown out for this game, one has to wonder, is there a chance here? Manning will no doubt make a lot of mediocre players look very good, but a depletion of his available weapons in a season where the Colts have looked a bit shaky at times can only bode well for us. So I will hold out hope. Your Texans sit in a tie for the 6th seed in the AFC, officially listed as the 7th because the Chiefs are leading their division and therefore are in the 6th by default. A good Week 8 could vault the team up the standings. A loss could start a downward spiral.

Anyone want to take the over/under on me having any hair left at the end of the season? I had to go back and check the score again when I pulled this beer out of the fridge, I was sure we had given up over 400 yards to Mat freaking Cassel's offense and lost that game.

Battle Red Blog Who to Root For - Week 6

With the loss to the Giants in week 5, the Texans took a nice little nose dive in the conference rankings. The Texans start the week in the 6 spot of the AFC playoff picture. Needless to say, a win against the AFC Chiefs is pretty important here. This week's lineup has 8 games that impact the Texans, with the Colts on the schedule after our bye, a win and some luck on our side this week is paramount.

A bit of an ugly win, but I'll take it to go 3-1 for the first time. If you told me in the preseason that when we got Cushing back we would be on top of the AFC South and the Colts would be on the bottom, I'm pretty certain I would have pissed myself laughing. So instead I will enjoy this victory beer, Red MacGregor a rich dark ale from Orkney Brewery in Scotland. I AM WILLIAM WALLACE!

Battle Red Blog Who to root for - Week 4

Its never too early to look at playoff hopes and the impact the rest of the NFL games have on the Texans chances. The Texans currently sit in 3rd in the AFC rankings. There are 7 games with any real meaning.

Jets@Bills - This is a no brainer, the Bills are 0-3 and the Jets are 4th in the AFC, an upset by the Bills at home is most favorable.

Bengals@Browns - We don't need the Bengals aiding a tie breaker in screwing us again this year. We need the winless Browns to get their first win at home.

Ravens@Steelers - A tough one as they are both AFC teams, but we play the Ravens later this year where a head to head tiebreaker is in our hands, so the Ravens knocking off the currently #1 seeded Steelers would be helpful in the long run.

Broncos@Titans - We will need all the help we can in the AFC South, any time the tits lose is a good thing.

Lions@Packers - Both NFC and we play neither. Who cares. But your heart wants to root for the underdog here. Go Lions.

49ers@Falcons -  Going 0-4 might make Patrick Willis angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Panthers@Saints - I can't imagine any way Baby 6lb Jesus allows the Saints to drop two in a row.

Seahawks@Rams - Seattle's QB has a hot wife. Good enough for my vote.

Colts@Jags- Either losing helps us, but if we are to have any chance of winning this division, we need the Colts to lose whenever possible. Go LA Jags.

Redskins@Eagles - We play the eagles later so lets hope the Redskins have a reenactment of the body bag game.

Cards@Chargers - an NFC team vs a AFC team we have to play later. Go Redbirds.

Bears@Giants - We play the Giants next week and I'd rather they not come in desperate for a win like Dallas did. Lets hope they pull it together at home and beat the bears. And it wouldn't hurt if all their starters got hurt with a minute left in the game.

Pats@Dolphins - Both 2-1 AFC teams, so either losing is good, but the Pats are the bigger threat here. Let the Dolphins steal one.

AFC Standings

1. Pittsburgh Steelers
2. Kansas City Chiefs
3. Houston Texans
4. New York Jets
5. New England Patriots
6.

Tennessee Titans

7. Indianapolis Colts
8. Cincinnati Bengals
