Reds Nation Trip to Cooperstown

January 6th. The Epiphany, the day the Baseball Writers of America may or may not have an epiphany and do the right thing.

This is going to be a road trip of epic proportions. Is that cheesy enough?

What am I talking about? The possible induction of the greatest shortstop in Reds history (sorry, Davey, you're number two, we love you!) into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. And we're gonna be there.

Hall of Fame weekend starts July 23, 2010. I'm organizing a group trip asap, meaning we stay in same hotel, hang out, etc. We're gonna have to stay outside of Cooperstown, of course, because they have limited accommodations and I'm sure they're already booked, but I'll try to get as close as possible. I want to organize vans to take us up there and am going to need drivers. Details will be worked out later, of course, but hotel reservations will need to be made soon after Jan 6 if things go our way.

Read about HOF weekend here.

Of course, we may not get the chance this year. It will certainly be close. If not, we'll have to postpone and do this every year until we get justice.

So - who's in? I need to gage interest so I can plan accordingly.

Innovation

Look, I have to do something I don't normally do, because I think it's important.

I've been doing some research on Josh Gibson lately for a project, and an idea about the Reds hit me. See, the Negro Leagues used lights for night games all the time before the Reds GM had the first night game in MLB history. The Reds sucked (have we heard this before?) in the thirties and attendance was lagging. So the GM decided to play night games. And guess what? "With the increased revenue, MacPhail was able to build winning teams that won pennants in 1939 and 1940 and were the World Series champs in 1940."

Look, the Reds have always been involved in innovative ideas - first professional team, first radio broadcast, first television broadcast, first night game...I know that a lot of these happened in other parks, but the fact is, the team had to agree with it.

So I'm going to do something I never do and point you to my economic case for innovation. Then come back here and tell me how you think the Reds can once again pull the innovation card out of their red caps and come out on top. I have some ideas of my own.

Yep, he did. Homer Bailey won NL Player of the Week for kicking ass. Actually, if you think about it, the fact that Homer won 8 games this year and wasn't up with the Reds all year is pretty darn awesome. And to think he was also the victim of a couple of blown saves.

I'll never forget that Major League debut, when I stayed home on a Friday night just to watch the game, only to lose electricity after the fifth inning due to a storm. I got out a transistor radio and dialed up 700 WLW all the way here in Washington, DC.

Oh, if I had the time, I'd go through and post all of those comments saying Homer would never be a Major League pitcher and we should trade him and blah, blah, blah, but I don't have the time, and really, what's the point? I'm just reveling in the sweet Homer goodness that was promised to us all of those losses ago.

To those who were calling to trade Homer in the spring - Ha! What do you think now?

(So we got two POW's in a row? Next year's not looking so bad...)

DC Displaced Reds Fan Club Gathering to watch Joeh in his hometown

Ok, I know Joey isn't back yet, but I'm quite certain he's gonna be back on Tuesday. He wants to play, he's been fine in two rehab stints (three I guess - I don't know what happened today), and it is his hometown. So let's watch together (and Gray's in town so we'll want to treat him to a good old fashioned DC gathering of Reds fans.)

When: Wednesday, June whatever Wednesday is, 2009, 7pm

Where: Momo's (1334 U Street.)

What: Duh

Who: Reds fans

Why: Because

How: By Metro or foot or car or plane or boat

I'm not sure how much longer the Reds can sustain enough fan interest to get together like this and watch them play. So let's enjoy our "contention" for as long as we can.

Reds fans in DC:

It's a real shame that we can't get together to see the Reds for at least one game this week. Or maybe no one saw the announcement. Come on! Solidarity! (We're the Reds, after all.)

Game times this week Reds at Nationals Park - Tuesday and Wednesday @ 7pm, Thursday @ 4:30. Let's all sit together and form a massive red block.

I don't have tix yet but will be going to all three games (I have Diamond Club seats for Tues so I can't give that up.) I'd like to get everyone together for at least one of the games, maybe get a group discount (come on, Reds fans, I know there are enough of you in DC to form a group.) If not, I have half off coupons that are good for the series, because, you know, the Reds aren't considered a "premium" series.

The weather forecast looks like crap for all three days (thank you, global warming, for turning DC into Seattle.) Right now the Weather Channel says highs of 83, 79, and 81 for each day with a 40% chance of rain (which usually means it will rain), scattered thunderstorms on Tuesday and Thursday and showers on Wednesday. So at least it won't be cold when we get soaked. But there are plenty of seats undercover and also bars and such if you melt when you get wet, so rain is no excuse not to come to the ballpark!

Wear RED shirts! We're rooting for the REDS!

I'm contacting the team to try to get Jim Day to come over and talk to us on camera.

I've already let work know that I'll be leaving early all three days (might not go in at all on Tues), so I may be more free than others, but here are the pre and post game beer plans for the week:

Tuesday - I plan on getting to the park when the gates open to watch batting practice and all that stuff. First 10,000 fans get a draft day t-shirt that says "I was there," with the W being the Nationals curly W. How cute. But if anyone is up for meeting for pre-game beers when BP is over, I'm up for it.

Wednesday - let's all get together for pre-game beers at The Bullpen, the beer garden area outside the centerfield gate at Nationals Park, say 6pm? I'm one of those who refuses to miss the first pitch, so I'll go into the park before the game starts but plan on sticking around until about ten or five til seven. I'm up for arriving earlier, too, if anyone is up for it.

Thursday - It's military appreciation day, so if you're in the service, bring your ID. I don't know if you get anything for it other than a God Bless America in the seventh inning, but maybe there's a discount? I'm hoping to have everyone gather together for post game beers since the bizarre 4:35 start time will allow plenty of time for such a thing. I was thinking some place around Eastern Market, but if anyone has any other suggestions, let me know.

That's it for now. Email me paddyglover at gmail dot com if you're going to be at the game and if you want to get tix together. Look for my update here later this evening. I'll be spreading this around the Reds interwebs, too, so we can pull all the Reds fans together.

Let's pull a Chub$ game on the Nationals (minus the obnoxiousness and stupidity) and make Nationals Park a home game for the Redlegs!

What do you think of him now?

Right-hander Homer Bailey was the League's only pitcher to win two games without allowing a run last week, also leading the circuit with 14 strikeouts and finishing 2nd with 14.2 innings pitched. Tuesday night in Pawtucket Bailey squared off against top Red Sox prospect Michael Bowden. Bailey turned in a masterpiece, limiting Pawtucket to four singles and two walks in 8.0 innings while striking out eight. Just once did the Red Sox manage to get a runner to third base as the Bats cruised to a

6-0 victory. Last night against Lehigh Valley, Bailey threw 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and striking out six with no walks to pick up his sixth win of the season.

23-year-old Homer Bailey was a 1st round draft choice of Cincinnati in 2004. He made his first Major League start of the 2009 season on May 23 against Cleveland, allowing six runs in 4.1 innings (no decision). Since returning to Louisville, Bailey has won three straight games and given up only two runs in 20.2 innings. Bailey is a native of La Grange, Texas.

G	GS	CG	SHO	W-L	ERA	IP	H	R	ER	BB	K	SV

Week:	2	2	0	0	2-0	0.00	14.2	11	0	0	2	14	0

Season:	11	11	2	1	6-5	3.41	66.0	68	31	25	22	58	0

Very happy to see this. I, for one, am still a big Homer fan and can't wait until he finally puts it all together. He will. He will!

Note that he gave up zero runs in the week, 11 hits, 2 BBs, and 14 K in 14.2 innings pitched.

Also note:

Bailey is now a two-time Player of the Week (April 20-26), and along with teammates Drew Stubbs (May 4-10) and Matt Maloney (May 11-17) gives Louisville a League-best four weekly awards this season.

Our farm system rox.

Thoughts?

Last time we had five people gather at Momo's on U Street. It would have been more, but we had to move from Solly's because they got rid of their Extra Innings package, and several people told me they showed up at Solly's after the second inning, when we moved.

Anyway, come and watch the first place (hopefully still) Reds with fellow fans on Wednesday, May 20 at Momo's on U Street (the address is 1300 something). They take on the World Champion Phillies at 7:10pm.

Next month's gathering? At Nationals Park! To see the Reds live! The Reds from Cincinnati! Three days in a row! The game on Thursday, June 11 oddly starts at 4:35, so we'll have to get together for post-game drinks.

Hi guys, trying to organize a game watching together meeting in the nation's capital.

The details:

Wednesday, April 29 @ Solly's on U Street. Game time is 7pm. Wednesdays are the day when the guy from Ohio works there. Bar is located near U Street Cardoza Metro Station on the Green Line. They had a car drive through the building last year but they still opened up that day despite the fact that they had no wall. Gotta love a place like that.

Trying to make this a monthly thing because it's always better to watch a game together than alone. Would like to fill up the downstairs part of the bar with Reds fans. It's about time we have a Reds bar in this city since there are enough of us here. Also, I have two cans of Skyline if anyone wants me to bring them. Ha ha.

Ignore the fact that is was me who posted this and just come and watch a game with Reds fans! Woo!
