Minor League Ball Rating last year's rookies--Community Prospect #22 runoff

Round 22 comes down to a tie between Vance Worley and Jemile Weeks. So we will have a runoff. Who do you prefer for the #22 slot on our list for future performance Vance Worley or Jemile Weeks? Need a few more words, so I'll say that I find it a hard decision between the two. Both seem likely to carve out major league careers as regulars for a while, both seem to have significant ceilings that will prevent them from being stars over any length of time.

Minor League Ball Rating Last Year's Rookies-Community Prospect #13 Runoff

Voting was more fractured then ever this round with 5 guys (Espinosa, Goldschmidt, Luebke, Chapman and Kimbrel) all within a narrow band of 14% to 22%.  The top two were separated by only a single vote and with them sharing only 41% of the vote between them, there is very little reason to have a preconceived notion which of the two of them would win a runoff.

So, a runoff it will be.  In one corner we have San Diego Padres pitcher Cory Luebke.  In the other corner, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt.

So, picking just between Goldschmidt and Luebke, who is the best prospect for future performance among that pair?

Minor League Ball Rating last year's rookies-Community Prospect #12

The runoff ends up being anticlimactic as Domonic Brown easily bests Danny Espinosa to earn the #11 slot among last year's rookies

1.  Brett Lawrie, 3b Toronto Blue Jays (51%)

2,  Eric Hosmer, 1b Kansas City Royals (57%)

3.  Michael Pineda, P Seattle Mariners (38%)

4.  Dustin Ackley, 2b Seattle Mariners (41%)

5. Desmond Jennings, of Tampa Bay Rays (47%)

6. Jeremy Hellickson, P Tampa Bay Rays  (49%)

7. Freddie Freeman, 1B Atlanta Braves (45%)

8. Brandon Beachy, P Atlanta Braves (27%)

9. Brandon Belt, OF/!B San Francisco Giants (33%)

10. Mike Moustakas, 3b Kansas City Royals (38%)

11. Domonic Brown, of Philadelphia Phillies (32%) (70% runoff)

Star-divide

The voting breakdown for the eleventh round round after Brown was Danny Espinosa 29% (30% runoff),  Paul Goldschmidt 13%, Cory Luebke 11%, Mark Trumbo 5%, Jason Kipnis 5%, Ivan Nova 3%, Aroldis Chapman 3% (runoff), JD Martinez 0%, Jordan Walden 0%.

I'm going to keep everyone on the ballot who got at least 5% of the vote, and drop everyone who didn't, so we'll drop Ivan Nova, Jordan Walden and JD Martinez for now. Despite getting a write in vote, Chapman will also stay off for another round or two barring an increase in his level of write in support. We'll rotate back in Jemile Weeks, Danny Duffy, Chris Sale and Kyle Drabek.

In rotation: Salvador Perez 0% (round 8), Zach Britton 0% (round 9), Vance Worley 0% (round 9), Craig Kimbrel 0% (round 9), Wilson Ramos 2% (round 10), Aroldis Chapman 2% (round 10), Henderson Alvarez 0% (round 10), Jose Altuve 0% round 10, Ivan Nova 3% (round 11), Jordan Walden 0% (round 11), JD Martinez 0% (round 11)

We'll give Lucas Duda his first time on the ballot this round, leaving as future testers:

Josh Collmenter, Kenley JansenDayan Viciedo, Juan Nicasio Alex Cobb, Mike Minor, Jordan Lyles, Ben Revere and Jerry Sands.

As always voting is by +1 and there are places below to suggest testers or vote for players not currently on the ballot.

So who is your number 12 prospect for future performance among last year's rookies?

Minor League Ball Rating last year's rookies- Community Prospect #11 Runoff

The votes have been counted for round 11, but it is so close between Danny Espinosa and Domonic Brown (12-11 Brown) that we need a runoff to separate them, our first so far.

Going into last year, Brown was John's #2 hitting prospect with a straight A, while Espinosa was well behind, earning a "strong B" and the #38 slot.

On the other hand, despite a less than stellar batting average, Espinosa played the entire year in the majors in 2011, hitting for pretty good power and by Fangraphs estimate also making a significantly positive contribution defensively, that all combined for a 3.5 WAR season, far ahead of the value Brown contributed at the major league level this season..

Minor League Ball Rating Last year's rookies-Community Prospect #5

For a little while it looked like we might have our first runoff, and given the contrasting skill sets, Jennings vs. Ackley would have made for an interesting one.  But, in the end Dustin Ackley pulled it out, making him our fourth best prospect for future performance among last year's rookies.

1.  Brett Lawrie, 3b Toronto Blue Jays (51%)

2,  Eric Hosmer, 1b Kansas City Royals (57%)

3.  Michael Pineda, P Seattle Mariners (38%)

4.  Dustin Ackley, 2b Seattle Mariners (41%)

The voting breakdown for the fourth round after Ackley was: Desmond Jennings 35%, Jeremy Hellickson 9%, Freddie Freeman 7%, Paul Goldschmidt 4%, Mike Moustakas 2%, Brandon Belt 2%, Jason Kipnis, Chris Sale, Kyle Drabek, Mark Trumbo and Zach Britton all at 0%

I'm going to keep everyone who got a vote (including Moustakas and Belt who were write in candidates last round) and drop everyone who didn't get a vote.  We'll rotate back in Wilson Ramos (yes, I know what is going on but it is hardly a reason to take him off the ballot), Jordan Walden, and Craig Kimbrel.

In rotation:  Aroldis Chapman 0% (round 3), Cory Luebke 0% (round 3), Jemile Weeks 0% (round 3), Dominic Brown 0% (round 3), Jason Kipnis 0% (round 4), Chris Sale 0% (round 40, Kyle Drabek 0% (round 4), Mark Trumbo 0% (round 4), Zach Britton 0% (round 4)

We'll give Danny Espinosa and Ivan Nova a first chance on the ballot this round.  This leaves as testers for the upcoming rounds:

Brandon Beachy, Henderson Alvarez, Danny Duffy, Vance Worley, Josh Collmenter, Kenley Jansen, Jose Altuve, Lucas Duda and Dayan Viciedo.

As always voting is by +1 and there are places below to suggest testers or vote for players not currently on the ballot.

So, who is your #5 prospect for future performance among last year's rookies?

Minor League Ball Rating last year's rookies-Community Prospect #4

Closest voting so far, but Michael Pineda emerges as the winner in round #3

1.  Brett Lawrie, 3b Toronto Blue Jays (51%)

2,  Eric Hosmer, 1b Kansas City Royals (57%)

3.  Michael Pineda, P Seattle Mariners (38%)

The voting breakdown for the third round after Pineda was:  Dustin Ackely 30%, Desmond Jennings 18%, Jeremy Hellickson 10%, Goldschmidt 3%, Freeman 3%, Kimbrel, Moustakas, Chapman, Luebke, Weeks and Brown all at 0%

Once again we'll keep everyone who got a vote.  We'll drop everyone who got no votes, although not for long, with Moustakas in particular getting back on for sure in round 5  We'll rotate Kipnis and Sale back in this round.

In rotation:  Ramos (0% in round 2 and best wishes for his speedy and safe return), Walden (0% round 2),  Craig Kimbrel (0% round 3), Mike Moustakas (0% round 3), Aroldis Chapman (0% round 3), Cory Luebke (0% round 3), Jemile Weeks (0% round 3), Dominic Brown (0% round 3).

We'll try for the first time from among the testers; Kyle Drabek, Mark Trumbo and Zach Britton.  This leaves as testers for upcoming rounds:

Danny Espinosa, Brandon Beacy, Ivan Nova, Henderson Alvarez, Danny Duffy, Vance Worley, Josh Collmenter, Kenley Jansen and Jose Altuve.

As always voting is by +1 and there are places below to add testers or vote for players not currently on the ballot.

So, who is your #4 prospect for future performance among this last season's rookies?

Minor League Ball Rating last year's rookies-Community prospect #3

The results from round 2 are in and the #2 prospect for future performance among last year's rookies is Eric Hosmer.  So far we have:

1.  Brett Lawrie, 3b Toronto Blue Jays (51%)

2.  Eric Hosmer, 1b Kansas City Royals (57%)

The voting breakdown for the second round after Hosmer was:  Ackley 19%, Pineda 16%, Jennings 5%, Goldschmidt 3%, Hellickson, Kimbrel, Kipnis, Ramos and Walden all at 0%.

Hellickson and Kimbrel actually got some support the prior round so I'll leave them on the ballot this round in addition to everyone who got a vote.  Kipnis (for one round) and Ramos and Walden (for two rounds) come off the ballot for now.  I'll bring back Freeman, Moustakas and Chapman this round.  Sale will stay off for one more round.

First time on the ballot this round for Cory Luebke, Jemile Weeks and Dominic Brown.

Other testers that we will be getting to in the next few rounds are Kyle Drabek, Mark Trumbo, Danny Espinosa, Zack Britton, Brandon Beachy, Ivan Nova, Henderson Alvarez and Danny Duffy

As always, voting is by #1 and there are places to add testers or vote for players not on the current ballot below

So, who is your #3 prospect for future performance among last year's rookies?

Minor League Ball Rating last year's rookies- Community Prospect #2

The results are in and the rookie from last year's class who we think has the best future ahead of him is Brett Lawrie.  Actually makes me kind of sad as a reminder that while I won my fantasy league this year I had to trade Lawrie to do it, a price I will regret paying for many years to come.  But I digress

Minor League Ball Community rating-last year's rookies #1

I know the communitity prospect list has also just kicked off, but that will be going far too long for it to make any sense to wait for that to finish before starting this one.  This is the third year in a row we have done this, and we'll be doing it essentially the same way as last year, by +1 voting.  The idea is to look at the group of players who used up their rookie status last year, and as a result are no longer "prospects" and rate them for expected future performance.  Obviously, that is a somewhat different criteria than is used in rookie of the year voting, and typically our voting, focused on future performance, has come up with very different results than the ROY voting.

The obvious place to start iin trying to find a #1 player for this list is the players who were at the top of our and John's prospect lists last year and who had strong debuts.  Moustakas, Hosmer, Freeman, Ackley, Lawrie, Jennings, and Kipnis (among hitters) and Hellickson, Pineda, Sale, Chapman and Kimbrel (among pitchers) seem like the best fits and will make up the initial ballot.

I'm certainly not forgetting Danny Espinosa, Wilson Ramos, Jordan Walden, Kyle Drabek, Zach Britton, Jemile Weeks, and Mark Trumbo who will be among the early testers and there is another group I'm looking at soon after that.  If you think they deserve a vote now you can add them below, but I'm guessing that if we cycle them in for the coming rounds they'll be in early enough.

As has been discussed in the community prospect list poll, the general idea will be to drop players who get less than 5% of the vote, but especially in the beginning I am going to use some discretion on that if one or two players get the vast majority of the votes.  We'll try to keep runoffs to a minimum, but especially early on I won't hesitate to use them if voting is very close and we can't tell who would likely have won a head to head vote.

So, who is your number 1 prospect for future performance among last year's rookies?

Minor League Ball Looking back at the rookie class of 2010 and at the top of the ballot in 2011

Having been until recently, more than a little distracted by the fortunes of the Rangers, I've recently caught up with my sleep enough to consider starting the annual "last year's rookies" rankings.  As you probably recall, the project is to rank last year's rookies as if they were still prospects, based on their expected future performance.

4. Carlos Santana, catcher Cleveland Indians

7. Starlin Castro, shortstop Chicago Cubs

8. Brian Matusz, Pitcher Baltimore Orioles

9. Pedro Alvarez, third base, Pittsburgh Pirates

10. Neftali Feliz, pitcher, Texas Rangers
