AAOP: Because 2011 is a Dry Run for 2012

I see 2011 as an opportunity.  An opportunity for 2012. The organizational expectations are low and the fan base is on board with that.  We’ll also have a lot of financial flexibility next...

Five Awesome Candidates for Mets Manager

I figured I'd make some suggestions, in no particular order, after the jump.

My 2011 Optimism: Unwarranted?

This is more of a poll than an article, but am I alone in being optimistic for 2011?  Here's how I see things, perhaps with rose-colored glasses.

Contender/Pretender

Today, the Rangers signed Alex Cora. Submitted without further comment, here are some moves by the (bankrupt) Rangers and (allegedly cash-strapped) Mets since the end of the 2009 season. Rangers:T...

Can we finish August with a 12-3 run? Would it matter?

Linked is the remainder of the Mets August schedule. Seven games versus Houston (51-65, no Oswalt or Berkman). Three against Pittsburgh (39-78). It's not outside the realm of possible that the Mets could take 9 of those games and then go 3-2 against the Marlins at home (3 games) and on the road at Atlanta (2 games). But would it matter? Would ending August at 70-62 get us close enough?

The Worst People in American Sports History

This is a poll, of sorts; not really an article.  And it's barely Mets related, if at all.  Read more after the jump.

In today’s Mets Insider, we take a closer look at OBP machine Jeff Francoeur, who bears little resemblance to the Moneyball punchline of years past. Since coming to the Mets last July, Francoeur has gradually become a more intelligent hitter, and he’s jumped out to a quick start this season. Here’s an excerpt from today’s story: When Atlanta traded Francoeur to the Mets last July, he arrived with a .282 on-base percentage, the fourth worst among NL starting players. His career mark of .308 was the lowest of any primary corner outfielder with 2,500 at-bats. To the "Moneyball" disciples, Francoeur was a punch line, the antithesis of what a general manager should build his team around. But no one is laughing at Francoeur this season now that he has transformed himself into a more intelligent hitter. ...That Francoeur is reaching base more than half the time is mind-boggling for those who followed his career arc through Atlanta, where he was known for power and productivity but never patience. "I think I’m learning how to hit," Francoeur said. "I still have to remind myself sometimes that I’m still only 26, and I feel like I’ve taken a big step."

Witness the parade of horribles. I went through each NL roster. Every team except the Rockies had at least three non-P players with an OBP of .300 or lower. (The Rockies had none.) I then looked for the guy with a sub-.300 who had the third most plate appearances for his team. If you want to know why the Mets are .500 team, the fact that we're so low on this table -- and who we're lumped with -- speaks volumes.

Frenchie v. Atlanta: Braves in the lead by two PAs

15

366. That's the number of plate appearances the Braves have wasted on non-pitcher batters with a YTD OBP under .300. Most of that comes via Nate McLouth (220), who is in the minors. The Mets have wasted 364 (!!!) on Jeff Francoeur. The race is on.

Adam Rubin on the Trade Deadline

For what it's worth, had the Mets done virtually nothing during the off-season, we'd have been better off.

In the last week or so, the Mets did not trade for Cliff Lee. Then, they activated Perez. I wonder what type of signal that sent to the clubhouse?

Informal Poll: Buy or Sell? And why?

Make your case in the comments. (UPDATE: The link goes to Alex Cora's page for no good reason -- it has nothing to do with buying or selling.)

Justin Turner called up?

Could be a preventative measure in case the team has to DL Jose, although it'd be a good idea anyway w/Tatis gone....

Tak2's Splits, the Second Time Through

15

Yikes. He's gotta be a RP. First time through, as a SP or RP, batters are putting up a .563 OPS against him (actually .564 as SP). Second time through as a SP? .974 And subsequent batters -- as an SP or RP -- aren't much better. To put this in perspective: the first time he goes through the lineup, he makes the batters look like an even worse version of Alex Cora; but every time after that, he makes the batters look like an even better version of David Wright. Let's make this guy an RP.

Patently Ridiculous Trade "Idea" Contest

Here are the rules: 1) Put your patently ridiculous trade ideas in a comment. 2) Rec comments that you like, for whatever reason. 3) Idea with most recs "wins". UPDATE: I think we have a winner.
