1998-1999 Knicks - lost in NBA finals. big 3 = sprewell, houston, and camby. supporting cast = larry johnson, charlie ward, kurt thomas, chris childs (ewing was hurt)

2000-2001 Bucks - Lost NBA Eastern Conference Finals (4-3) versus Philadelphia 76ers. big 3 = allen, cassell, robinson. supporting cast = tim thomas, scott williams, ervin johnson, jason caffey, lindsey hunter, darvin ham.

assuming all we do from here is add another serviceable big man, where do we stack up against these teams?

in anticipation of a really downbeat post tomorrow and general outrage, i'd like to try to inject some positivity and get a contrarian viewpoint out there.

first, i would have liked a move for VC (sorry i didn't reply to your post last year Rook, i liked your proposal), but the move we made is arguably better. first off we get two good players, not just one, which is a definite plus. second, we have tons of flexibility with these guys in terms of their contracts. we can choose what we want to do with them after next year once we see how it works out. that's valuable.

second, i think EG might see something in foye. he might have pounced on that trade. he's young. he could be another caron for us: a guy everyone thought would be great out of college, had some knee issues, bounced around, then EG picks him up and he's frigging awesome for us. (maybe it's wishful thinking, but i'll come back to that in a second...)

as for rubio, three teams passed on him in a weak draft. he could be great, but maybe it's just hype... that's all i've got to say.

one of these guys will turn out to be the guy we could have had. "we picked kenny green?! we could have had karl malone!!!" well, what about all the other busts we didn't pick either? you can always play that game. it's wishful thinking to assume the 5th pick will be a perennial all-star down the road. i understand the risk/reward argument, and it's valid, but anyhow, i'm going to cross my fingers and hope foye puts it together in dc.

i respect what EG did. he improved the team. we're going to be good next year and i'm looking forward to it.

Sally Jenkins article

was anybody else taken aback by this one? she writes nothing about the wizards in several years then drops in saying how awful the team has been and basically insinuates that they haven't tried hard enough. okay, they've been bad on defense, we get it - but to straight up question these guys's committment? that's BS i think, especially considering how hard these guys competed last year.

i wasn't a big fan before, but now i'm really sour on Sally Jenkins.

here are some odds i'm seeing, not gonna link it since i don't want to encourage gambling, but i think it's interesting. from the looks of this, vegas isn't projecting the wiz to be a playoff team. i'm more bearish on the wizards than most on this site, but still, that seems pretty harsh. where's the love?

HIRE NEW TRAINING STAFF

have them check out gil's knee.

assuming it's good, resign gil + twan to reasonable contracts.

get etan back on the court.

get blatche in the weight room.

let mason walk (i love him but there's no room).

draft brandon rush (was projected in 20's but now it looks like phoenix might snatch him up earlier than 18. i'll stick with this suggestion).

cut mcguire or pech. (sucks to do it, but hey...)

get additional stopgap backup point guard.

utilize new training staff and finish top 3 in conference with healthy team.

post is reporting that gil isn't practicing because he's got soreness in his knee. last night he didn't show up to the game to watch from the bench. this worries me. anyone have better information on this? ivan seems to be glossing over this little tidbit.
