Washington Nationals' Stephen Strasburg Named NL Player of the Week

1

He was good. Like, real good. Strasburg struck out 22 and gave up just six hits and three runs over two starts, winning his first two games in the major leagues. Click the link for the official press release.

Washington Nationals Send Justin Maxwell Back to Minors

8

As was widely expected, after the game the Washington Nationals returned OF Justin Maxwell to Triple-A Syracuse to make room for tomorrow's starter, J.D. Martin. Martin will be activated and start against rookie RHP Mat Latos Saturday afternoon.

Washington Nationals Option RHP J.D. Martin to Triple-A Syracuse

+

The Nationals today sent J.D. Martin down to Triple-A, reducing the number of pitchers competing for the final spot in the rotation to two: Scott Olsen and Garrett Mock. Mock walked five yesterday in his latest appearance and was knocked around quite a bit, giving up seven hits and the five walks for six runs (five earned) over four and two-thirds innings. He struck out three. Olsen is scheduled to start on Friday against Boston in his last chance to secure the roster spot. He was mildly effective in his last start, but still has not topped 86-87 MPH with his fastball. He may be "healthy", but also might not have enough arm strength built up to be a contributing member of a MLB rotation. Today is the deadline the Nats have to release him or be on the hook for his entire 2010 salary of $1 million. So if the axe doesn't fall on Olsen today, he'll remain with the organization in some capacity.

Washington Nationals Sign Mike MacDougal to Minor League Contract

15

Per several Nationals beat reporters, the Nats have brought Mike MacDougal back into the fold, after his release from the Florida Marlins yesterday. He is expected to be in camp tomorrow. MacDougal was the Nats de facto closer last season after Joel Hanrahan was traded toPittsburgh. He was 1-1 with 20 saves last season, split between Washington and the Chicago White Sox, with a 4.33 ERA and 1.66 WHIP.

Washington Nationals Cut Three, Trim Spring Roster to 36

5

The Washington Nationals pared their spring training roster by three this morning, sending RHP Shairon Martis to Triple-A Syracuse, and reassigned INF Pete Orr and OF Chris Duncan to minor league camp. The Nats now have 36 players in camp. Martis has not shown the development team officials would have liked to have seen this spring. Orr and Duncan provide organizational depth at this point in their careers. Duncan, thought to be able to compete for an OF/1B backup job, seems to have lost out to Mike Morse for that slot. The Nats face the New York Mets today from Viera, FL. Jason Marquis is scheduled to start for Washington.

Washington Nationals Make Cuts; Strasburg, Storen to Minors

7

The Washington Nationals made several roster cuts today, including sending 2009 No. 1 overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg and his fellow first round pick Drew Storen to the minors today. Strasburg was assigned to AA Harrisburg, and Storen reassigned to minor league camp, with the probable assignment to Harrisburg as well. LHPs Matt Chico and Doug Slaten and C Jamie Burke were also reassigned to minor league camp. The cuts bring the roster to 39.

Washington Nationals Make Six More Cuts Today

2

The Washington Nationals made six more cuts today. Five players were reassigned to the minor league camp: RHPs Juan Jaime, Ryan Mattheus and Collin Balester and LHPs Aaron Thompson, Atahualpa Severino, . Veteran reliever Ron Villone was released. These cuts reduce the spring training roster even further as the battle for playing time continues.

Washington Nationals Make First Round of Cuts

8

According to various sources this morning, the Nationals have made their first round of cuts. Given their outright releases, at least according to those sources, were LHPs Eddie Guardado and Shawn Estes. Re-assigned to minor league camp were RHPs Joel Peralta, Logan Kensing and Ryan Speier, LHP Victor Garate, OF Jerry Owens, and C Derek Norris.

Washington Nationals' Catcher Jesus Flores Headed to Dr. Andrews, Likely DL

21

Washington Nationals catcher Jesus Flores will receive treatment on his surgically repaired right should from noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews.

Rizzo: "It's been no secret I like Orlando Hudson."

+

We caught up with the Nats Caravan at lunchtime at Ben's Chili Bowl. We spoke with Drew Storen about being so media-friendly and the "face of the caravan" thus far. Then, we asked GM Mike Rizzo about free agent 2B Orlando Hudson. Says he's the top, but not only, option for middle infield help. Check out the article for quotes and pictures.

Washington Nationals Sign Walker, James and Duncan

6

According to various sources, the Nats signed RHRP Tyler Walker to a one-year, $650,000 major league contract, and signed LHSP Chuck James and OF Chris Duncan to minor league deals. Walker is a useful righty specialist, who had a good season with the Phillies last year, with a K/BB rate of 3.0 in 35.1 IP and a 3.06 ERA. James has spent the last season and a half recovering from rotator cuff AND labrum surgeries. In 2006-07, he went 22-14 in 48 starts with a 4.05 ERA and 1.320 WHIP, striking out 6.6 per nine innings. Duncan hit 22 and 21 home runs in 2006-07 as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, but just a combined 11 in the last two seasons. He was released by Boston, never appearing for them, after a July trade for SS Julio Lugo. There has been no official word from the Nationals as of this posting on any of these signings.

Washington Nationals Sign Four, Avoid Arbitration

+

The Washington Nationals annouced, via a very short press release, that they came to terms with four players today, thus avoiding salary arbitration with the group. The players with new contracts are OF Josh Willingham, C Jesus Flores, C Wil Nieves, and RHRP Jason Bergmann. No conditions of the contract were announced. This news leaves just two players still eligible for arbirtation with the Nationals: RHRP Brian Bruney and LHRP Sean Burnett.

Washington Nationals Interested in Randy Winn? For What Role?

8

MLBTradeRumors.com reports that the Nats might be interested in 36-year old OF Randy Winn. Winn is still a terrific defensive player, but his slash stats last season were Guzmanian at .262/.318/.353 in 528 ABs. There's already speculation about what Winn's role might be with the Nationals. My take: he'd be fine as a veteran 4th OF and defensive replacement, but not at the expense of Dukes' development, or the oushing of Willingham out the door. Something tells me Winn's still looking for a FT roll, though. The Nats have a decent offense, but if Winn were to play full-time over either Dukes or Willingham, it would leave a hole in the batting order that his defense simply couldn't make up for. This lineup just can't make up for two sub-.320 OBPs, and that's what Winn and Guzman bring to the table.

Webb Not Interested in Pay Cut

10

Here's another link for y'all. Sounds like Brandon Webb, potential free agent, isn't interested in a reduced salary from his current employers, the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs have a team option for Webb at $8.5 million with a $2 million buy-out. Sounds like Webb might just hit the open market, but if he's that adament about not taking a pay cut, what chance to the Nats have of signing him at $8.5+ million? My guess: Little to none. Should be an interesting off-season for GM Mike Rizzo in finding a veteran free agent starter to head up his "kiddie corps".
